They just finished redoing the area closest to the water and it looks great. There was a point in time that the only people that would go to the northern part were homeless and young couples that wanted to horizontal tango. They added solar powered light and opened it up a bunch with walkways and benches.

What a shame with the group of people that decided to chop down the pine trees. They completely took the magic out of the park. The new design is an embarrassment and a lack of planning. Hope next time you hire a proper landscape architect. Plus, there is no shade anywhere in the park! Make skin cancer great again!

In northern Coconut Grove you will find Alice C. Wainwright Park named after the first female elected to serve on the City of Miami Commission. Alice Wainwright was a dedicated environmentalist who was closely associated with Marjory Stoneman Douglas. The two women worked together to found the Everglades protection group in 1969. Alice wrote the charter for Friends of the Everglades and represented the Audubon Society in South Florida for 20 years. She was able to stop a jetport in Big Cypress Swamp that threatened the endangered Florida Panther and prevented a resort in what is now Biscayne National Park. Alice Wainwright passed away at the age of 83. Since Alice Wainwright was a long time protector of the environment it seems appropriate that a 28 acre park and nature area was named for her. This park shares part of the hardwood hammock known as Brickell Hammock with nearby Simpson park. Located in a neighborhood that is directly on the Biscayne Bay you get a wonderful view of the Miami City Skyline. This park is great for picnics, biking, and running. Park amenities include a playground, picnic pavilions, two basketball courts, and an outside gym. At one time this park was thought to be responsible for bringing crime to the area. The wealthy homeowners were able to get increased protection for the area. When I visited there was a police car monitoring the area. The downside to this park is that number of spots is extremely small compared to the number of people who want to use the park. The police keep visitors from parking on private property. I was never able to find a spot despite driving around for a long time and I could only see it from the gate. The limited parking prevents a lot of people from being able to use the park which is probably how the residents of this neighborhood like it.

What a find..would never have known about it unless I was told. So I came, and was so glad that I did. What a slice of heaven, calm, quiet, right in the ocean just to the side of the Ricken backer causeway..ssshhh, don't tell everyone!!! Plenty of areas to run around, a small children's Park area, a few seats and also picnic benches dotted around...plenty of shade aswell and dogs are also allowed. I will definitely come back and pack a picnic for the next visit. And will sit and reflect on life..

Nice little park. Not a lot of parking, but there is some close by. Park is ok, has some things to use and play on. There are some areas to picnic and BBQ. Great views of the ocean. There is some workout/health equipment. Not sure of hours.

Great park right on the ocean! Relaxing ocean breeze throughout the whole park with a great nature atmosphere to do small hikes with the kids. There is also a nice padded playground and swing set, full basketball court , restrooms, benches everywhere, outdoor workout equipment , and tons of pavilions . Great slot for a relaxing picnic or times with the family

I've wandered into Wainwright a couple of times from when I lived in the Roads to recently when I want to say I'm doing something healthy (it's about a 2 mile roundtrip from the Vizcaya metrorail station.) As other reviews have indicated, it is definitely a change of pace from the hurry up, run and daleee lifestyle of Miami. There are a couple of picnic shelters, a nice grassy area for a picnic as well as a basketball court and kiddie play area. As far as natural cardio, there's also a limestone ridge you can do some climbing on. Located right on the bay and with a view of the Key Biscayne bridge, Wainwright Park would be so much better to have a kayak ramp or at least a ladder for those who want to be adventurous and swim the bay. It's also a pet friendly park, maybe I'll bring Luna next time.

This park is probably one of my favorite. I discovered it by accident and I'm so glad I did. It has an area for kids to play and an area for adults to e exercise. They also has a shelter that you can rent out for birthday celebrations. The view of the ocean is also so beautiful and soothing. I saw families having a picnic, barbecuing, and just having a jolly good time.

The view of this park alone deserves 5 stars. I love bringing my son here when I'm in the area. The playground has baby and regular swings and two sets of slides/climbing centers. It has a basketball court and some workout stations. But that view. Love that view!!! I suggest going at sunset. Beautiful :)

Alice Wainwright park is a small park that's fairly well hidden. You can either come here by car by turning off US1 near Vizcaya and driving back through a quiet little neighborhood (with some very nice homes), or if you're biking or on foot, there's also an access between the parking area for this park and the sidewalk that leads to the Rickenbacker Causeway. As some others mentioned, many of the parking spaces are full most times, especially early on the weekends as several groups of cyclists meet here before riding over to nearby Key Biscayne (come here nearly any time on the weekends and you're likely to see more than a few vehicles with empty bike racks on them). They have a fairly utilitarian set of restrooms and a water fountain near the main entrance to this park, a basketball court, a playground, lots of open space and several picnic benches, shelters and shaded grassy areas for picnicking or just relaxing, reading a book or taking in the beautiful scenery. As other reviewers have mentioned, the park itself and most shelters are right on the water (there is a retaining wall between the shelters and the bay, and a small drop between the retaining wall and the water, so you cannot swim here) and would be a great place to come with some friends or family to hang out, barbecue and toss a ball around for a while. Also, the last few times I've been here on the weekends, there were always some more quiet places to go if you're looking for a romantic spot to come for a picnic or to spend an afternoon. Nearly every time I've passed this place, there has been a marked police car with an officer near the entrance, so security is not a concern. Also, if you've not been here in a while, it should be noted that they've made some recent upgrades to the basketball court, the playground area (including the installation of rubber ground padding in case of falls), and an exercise and fitness area as well. - See the photos I've posted for this listing. Wainwright Park is another one of those hidden gems in our city. This one seems to be even lesser known than some others, as nearly every time I've been here, even on the weekends, it's never been overrun with people or had all the shelters filled.

You still have to pay for parking. I recommend the parking lot next door. The Pirate Park Playground was built by Superior Playgrounds who was tasked with designing a one-of-a-kind pirate theme play space to spark creative play and provide a safe place for budding buccaneers to play. The playground is made of recycled material like milk jugs and was created to be corrosion resistant so that it would always look good in this salt water coastal ecosystem. Located only 100 feet from the beach, the playground is fenced in for safety. There is a large pirate ship for older children to climb on and slide down and a smaller area for younger privateers. The crows nest with rigging looked especially fun to climb. Other playground play structures include clownfish and blue tang fish spring riders, a custom octopus playhouse, and palm tree shade. There are four triangle sail shades and poured-in-place safety surfacing to protect little knees and bottoms. Bathrooms are nearby. During my visit the playground was filled with kids and their families enjoying the nautical theme. This unique play space fosters imagination and physical movement for the youngest North Beach residents and visitors.

Bayfront Park, originally named Royal Palm Park, is the oldest public gathering space in Greater…read moreMiami. It was established in 1896 and began with a pavilion and green space used for sports activities. The park was also used for political and religious gatherings near the railroad tracks and tidal marshes. In 1922, the city constructed a retaining wall to create a formal park. Warren Manning, who had worked for Frederick Law Olmsted Sr., was commissioned for the design. The 62-acre park officially opened in March 1925 and included pathways, tropical landscaping, and a wide pedestrian promenade that extended from East Flagler Street to the bay. The 1926 hurricane destroyed much of the park. A year later, the city installed a bandshell, a grotto, and a rock garden on the waterfront. During World War II, the U.S. Navy took over the park and used it as part of its critical operations in the area. In 1943, the Navy installed the Dade County War Memorial. The military returned the park to the city in 1950, but it was in a battered state. The city built a library that blocked the view of the bay, and the following two decades saw little investment in the park. In 1980, the City of Miami approved a budget of $10 million to redesign the park. Famous Japanese-American modernist artist and landscape architect Isamu Noguchi was chosen for the task. His inspiration was to create a village green for downtown Miami. He convinced the city to remove the R.C. Gardner Bandshell, which had fallen into disrepair, as well as the library, and to restore Manning's pedestrian promenade. His plan also called for adding new amphitheaters and a large fountain at the end of a promenade flowing from East Flagler Street. The busts and statues of Hispanic leaders were relocated to an area outside the park. Eventually, the project ballooned to more than $40 million, much of it paid for through grants. Noguchi passed away during the construction of the park, but the torch was passed to his longtime collaborator, Shoji Sadao, who carried out his plans and vision. Today, Bayfront Park is maintained by the Bayfront Park Management Trust, a limited agency of the City of Miami. It is smaller than when it originally opened and currently encompasses 32 acres. A highlight of the park is its stunning views of Biscayne Bay. The park is also a culturally important outdoor museum, with art and monuments that add beauty and historical perspective. The Dade County War Memorial was restored in the 1990s, and there are statues honoring Claude D. Pepper and Julia Tuttle, the "Mother of Miami." The park still contains all of the major elements of the Noguchi plan, including the centerpiece fountain, although it is currently closed for repairs. It also features the Lee and Tina Hills Playground, open lawn spaces, a sandy beach area, the tropical rock garden, and the historic waterfall from 1926. A visit to downtown Miami would not be complete without a stop at Bayfront Park. The park is within walking distance of attractions such as the Freedom Tower, Bayside Marketplace, Kaseya Center, Museum Park, and numerous restaurants and entertainment venues. If there is a downside, it is that parking in downtown Miami is scarce and expensive. I have attended many outdoor concerts here through the years, and it is also the site of the popular Ultra Music Festival every March. In June, the park will host the FIFA Fan Festival when Miami welcomes the World Cup. A recent visit found me admiring the many sculptures throughout the park. Bayfront Park is still evolving, and future plans call for new lighting, a café, and additional redesign elements. Known as "Miami's Front Porch," it remains a vital outdoor oasis of green space for residents of the surrounding towers and visitors to the city alike.
