I do love this place but they have some off days. Today my pepperoni pizza had a couple of mushrooms on it. Not a big deal, except when you're allergic to the shrooms. Each separate topping is a charge. Not explained by the server. The manager was less than agreeable saying that's their policy. This used to be one of my favorite pizza joints. Their pizza and salad are fantastic! However, I've been disappointed in the breadsticks the last few times I've gone. They seem thinner than what I remember and the butter they are served with is rock hard. If you plan on eating in, plan on waiting around 20 minutes. This is my favorite pizza and I'm impossible to please. I only like sitting at the bar though one time we sat in the dining room and had good service. My super fussy dad said it was fresh and s good sized portion and lots and lots of fries. The breadsticks have started being a little too browned on the last couple visits. Maybe just a preference for lighter color but no problem eating an entire basket of them. My daughter had the tortellini. I would say this is a carbonara. We came here for dinner last night with family to celebrate a birthday. The wait was about 30 minutes but we were able to find a seats at the bar until the table was ready. The hostess was older and seemed annoyed with how busy they were.. when our table was finally ready she came up to us and said it was our last call since she called for our party 5 times. We never once heard her and she knew where we were sitting.. we were seated at a round table, drop center of the bar area which was kind of in the way of people going through that area of the restaurant, and very cold with the air from the front doors. The Greek salad was fresh and delicious. The pizza is always good there. There was a sign that said to be patient due to limited staff but we did not wait long. Food for all 6 of us was very good. Three had the pecan chicken salad; Two had pizza and I had the lake perch...overall everyone was pleased with their food. One item we found annoying was that some of the best things on the menu were only available on Friday and Saturdays. My granddaughter saw the only picture on the menu (prime rib) and had her heart broken when it was not available until the next day. Shortcomings included how drafty/cold it was inside the restaurant. Given it was December and it was cold outside...this is Michigan and it's cold every December. It should not have been this cold in the restaurant. The other shortcoming was the attitude of our waitress. While her service level was adequate she was not very friendly about it. Bummer. Per the recommendation of friends, I dined at the Alibi last weekend. For quite a while now, I've been hearing how they adore the pizza and how amazing the bread sticks are. Being a bit of a pizza freak, I agreed to go without hesitation. It was Saturday night, around 7 pm, and the place was packed! A good sign, for sure. As I was waiting to be seated, the aromas teased me, left me salivating. The 25 minutes flew by as I gawked at other people's food and imagined what delicacies I was about to partake in. I'm not going to lie: food excites me! Unfortunately, the imagining was as good as it got. After being seated, my party and I were promptly attended to by our waiter. I perused the beer list, which was minimal and pretty standard, and upon picking my beverage, was carded. No problemo. When I presented my ID to the waiter, he danced around our section of the restaurant, placing my card under various lights to check its validity, asking other staff members if it they thought it was real. This was all done in fun, a big funny ha-ha, and I went along with it ... the guy's working for tips after all. The Alibi's menu is varied in its selection: soups, sandwiches, chicken, seafood, pasta, ribs. You name it, it looks like they have it. Their reputation, as far as I know, is largely based on their pizza and that is what I was there to eat. For being their supposed specialty, this section of the menu looked a little sparse. The topping offerings were, like the beer selection, standard and minimal. Not that I'm a crazy topping person, but if a place is known for pizza, you'd expect some imagination. I was further bummed to see no variety in crust offerings. But, I'm a believer in goodness in simplicity, so I cast my disappointment aside and ordered a medium pizza with Italian sausage and mushrooms. The waiter, once again, was prompt in taking our order. When the pizza arrived, after an adequate amount of time, my disappointment continued. Instead of Italian sausage and mushroom, I received a pizza with Italian sausage and onion. If I was not onion fan, I would have mentioned it to the waiter. It was busy, I was hungry and I'm not a complainer, so I kept it to myself and moved on. Well, maybe I am a complainer, after all, because the next thing I have to tell you is that the pizza didn't even look good! The crust was somewhere between thin and regular, the sauce wasn't evident and all together it just appeared dull and lifeless, kind of like something you find at a mall food court, something that's been sitting under a heat lamp for a better portion of the day. Being the optimist that I am, I told myself I had better not judge by appearance, that I ought to dig in before make up my mind. Nope! Bad idea! It tasted just as lifeless as it looked. The Italian sausage was hardly that - it tasted like hamburger as far as I'm concerned. No spices or flavor to it at all. They went skimpy on the cheese and sauce. The crust was on the thinner side and lacked any crunch or texture. All in all, the pizza was blah. It looked blah and it tasted blah. 'Twas a big huge bummer. I feel I must also make a note that our waiter was a tad too boisterous. The horseplay in the beginning of the night with my ID was a bit theatrical and mildly amusing -tolerable for sure- but it carried on throughout our meal, kind of becoming a nuisance. He would often interrupt my table's conversation and interject things as he was walking by. This almost seemed like a subsitution for checking on us (I don't recall him ever actually asking us if we needed anything). He also made several references to smoking crack, not only to me and my friends, but to surrounding tables. I am by no means a stickler when it comes to humor, but this just struck me as tacky and unprofessional, especially when there were so many families around. There is a very slim chance that I'd ever return to Alibi. I don't understand what the hype is. As a previous reviewer mentioned, perhaps it has gained popularity through its familiar location and cozy setting. But, in my quest for the perfect pizza, I shall look elsewhere. read more

My parents took me to the first one when I was a kid and now that I live out of state I plan my trips home with mandatory meals at the Alibi. I'd have Alibi pizza and Greek dressing as my last meal if given the choice. I've had pizza in NY, Chicago, and all over Italy but Alibi is my favorite. I have been here a handful of times and the food is decent, nothing spectacular, its pizza, pasta, sandwiches, and salads; and their management policies are crummy. First off they don't take reservations even for large parties and the hostesses are rude and dismissive to talk to in person. Also regardless if the restaurant is busy or not they will not seat your party until every member has arrived, but they are very unaccommodating/patient if a member of your party is elderly or in a wheelchair. We were here this past Sunday for a family get together. I arrived early to make sure we could get a table that was wheelchair accessible, the hostess told me to let her know when everyone has arrived and she could seat us then. Once the rest of my family arrived we were seated by another hostess who then noticed that only 3 of the 5 people in are party were being seated. At this moment she started picking up the menus and made a snippy remark about the rest of party not being present. I proceeded to tell her that the 91 year old, WWII Pilot is a wheelchair and it takes some time to get him out the car but they will be right in. She wasn't very understanding of this but allowed us to sit, all the while she stood hovering over our table making sure that the rest of party was actually going to arrive. That whole no seating until your entire party is there is so out of fashion. Especially when small children and elderly adults are involved. Get a grip. When I was a kid, we would meet my dad for lunch at Alibi when it was a little old building. Now, I live 2200 miles away from Alibi, but its always included on the itinerary when we make a trip home. The pizza is dee-lish. Perfect balance between dough/sauce/cheese/toppings. I can't put my finger on it, but the dough is almost sweet tasting. And the greek salad dressing is pure garlic goodness. I always get some to go and bring it back to CA, probably irritating all of my fellow plane-mates. Oh well! I took a client here for lunch. The atmosphere and decor were dated, but the food was solid. I had a chicken sandwich with spinach and mushrooms that was in the regular menu rather than the lunch menu. I thought the lunch menu didn't seem to have many choices so I'm glad that they supplied the regular menu as well. I thought the service was indifferent. For example, the server put our drinks in the middle of the table instead of putting each person's drink in front of that person. Noone checked to see if the food was correct or if we needed anything. It was busy, but when I'm with a client, I prefer better service. read more

What can I say, I've been coming here for 20 years and it is still a great place for whatever occasion! For many people it's all about the pizza, which is excellent. They have the small pepperoni's, but not greasy like a number of pizzas that might feature that style of topping. The toppings are overwhelming and big bites. It could be renamed the 'no half steppin' pizza'. For me it's all about the Veal Parm. The best veal parm for 20 square miles. The plate is overstuffed with goodies and the entire plate is covered and smothered in mozzarella. Sooo good. Prices are fair and you get what you pay for. You will not leave hungry. The Alibi is # 1 Crust with big puffy bubbles browned just right, Sauce sweet with a little tang, Toppings are very fresh... My favorites pepperoni, ham, onion and mushrooms. Lots of thick gooey cheese. Very busy hot spot in the evenings and weekends, so a little wait sometimes. Carryout has is own separate door on the back side for a quick in and out. Ordered a carryout at 9:45 on a Friday night, and it was ready by 10:00. The pizza was heavy with toppings, and was delicious. In the past I've been let down by Alibi, but today it was fantastic. The sauce was very good and the crust was chewy. Sometimes veggie pizzas can get soggy/soupy in the middle, but not this pizza! The price was average for a speciality pizza; $13.95. I love that you have gluten-free options and variety of garden salad sizes! It would be cool to see more vegan options available though. Sometimes people will go where their vegan friends have options available to them. A vegan pasta, sautéed veggie sandwich, soup, or pizza could be good and would fit with what you have on your menu. I wish The Alibi was closer to my house. The line to get in should be your first clue that this place has something going on. Get there early or plan on waiting (and there's not much room left to wait.) We had the most fantastic pizza and salad since that's what they're known for and we sure weren't disappointed. I should have listened to the other reviewers and tried the pizza, because I wasn't really thrilled with the Fish & Chips I ordered. While it wasn't bad, it wasn't among the best, either. My cousin did order the pizza and I could have tried hers, but I'm not a huge pepperoni fan and besides, I was full from my own lunch. The bread sticks, however, blew me away. I was expecting your average doughy bread sticks, but these...well...these tasted like soft pretzels! Seriously! Complete with a sprinkling of the sea salt! Yummo. (That said, I did find it a bit strange that my fish and chips came with a side order of bread sticks...but I'm not complaining.) One interesting thing...when I ordered my fish, the waitress asked me if I wanted more lemon or tartar sauce--well, how am I supposed to know that before seeing the plate? I said no, because I figured if it was your typical fish and chips platter, there would be one wedge of lemon and a ramekin of tartar sauce. However, there were two HUGE wedges of lemon and a teeny tiny plastic cup of tartar sauce (maybe one tablespoon)! I certainly would have wanted more tartar sauce, but since our requested side of ranch took two requests and 20 minutes, I opted not to wait for more tartar sauce. (To her credit, though, the waitress was apologetic once she realized she forgot.) Our drinks were kept filled pretty quickly and the bill and to-go order were also brought promptly. They have fantastic pizza! you cannot go wrong with getting their pizza here. their salads are DELICIOUS and more than enough to share. i've also tried some of their sandwiches. the turkey Reuben. The Alibi Hany. all delicious. Their french onion soup is always good. Their nachos are literally the best i've ever had. The service is (usually) quick and friendly.
