I see this place only has 3 stars, a very unfair rating. Alex, the owner is not only a nice gentleman, but also has a tasty shawarma, reasonably priced and he recently changed his fries to homemade and fresh, GREAT idea. I always ask where the owners are from (background) to gauge how that country would make their shawarmas, I'm just like that lol. Moving along, I believe Alex said he is from Syria. I haven't tried his entire menu, can't speak about anything but his fantastic and tasty chicken shawarma and his wonderful fries. I will repeat 100%. Give this place a try. read more

Could this be the best shawarma I've ever had? All I know is that I can't stop thinking about it. I came here for lunch with a couple of coworkers. I got the kafta wrap and they both got chicken shawarmas. When it comes to wraps, it's all about the extras for me. They had all the greatest hits: hummus, cilantro, pickles turnips, and hot sauce, plus a whole bunch of other options that were very fresh and tasty. My wrap was delicious! The beef was perfectly grilled, flavourful, and the wrap had the perfect balance of meat and veggies. This place gets a bit busy during lunch hour, with lots of people getting takeout. There's also seating for maybe 20 people altogether. I'm so happy to have this place in my life and I can't wait to go back!! read more

Alex's Falafel and Shawarma - a man preparing food - Falafel Near Me - Markham, Ontario

The first time I went it was ok. The meat was not sliced of the vertical grill, but brought out from some kind of a warm place. But it was passable, anf the portions adequate. I decided to give this store another chance. On my second visit the portions were very skimpy for both meat and filler ( various salad). This time I added a falafel sandwich order amd the falafel were already fried, not freshly cooked. They were edible, but just! I tipped generously both times and I hope the owner is well meaning enough to be interested enough to read his reviews and adjust. Otherwise we all have other choices when it comes to this type of food. read more

I was actually on my way to another shawarma place until I spotted Alex's sign! It didn't show in my search but thought I'd give it a shot. Boy! Am I glad I did, the beef kafta was so delicious I didn't think the chicken kobob would stand a chance! But as soon as I tasted the chicken I forgot the kobob. Brilliant! Seriously this place is under-rated. read more

Truthfully its a 3 out of stars. My expectations for a shawarma is never thru the roof. The staff was friendly and very polite. The food was well stuffed and done very well. Not Bad...good stuff! read more

I think only one guy is operating the entire place... so could take some time ventilation needs a bit work... sauce is blend i think for spicy one its chinese chili? I had the beef plate The taste is just ok... price is quite high for the quality quantity n service Quantity is kinda small compare to the rest of others read more

C-19 review. Take out only. Ordered the Shawarma, beef with everything, extra hot sauce and hot peppers. Delicious. My friend loved the spice. Just enough to keep your mouth warm to hot, without being uncomfortable. Very friendly and efficient service. Would definitely order there again and recommend foe peeps that like this type of food read more

This was the first time staying in Markham, On and with in walking distance of so many dinning establishments. My second night here I decided to try something new that I've never had before! I searched Google maps for a place close by and found Alex's Falafel & Shawarma. I ordered the plate of Beef Shawarma with delicious hummus, lentil, rice, tabouli salad, potato salad, a pita, some tahini sauce and the most amazing samosa I have ever tried! The portion was huge but just the right amount for the affordable cost. The food was amazing and the host was so welcoming . I will definately revisit this establishment next time I am in the area. I was told the chicken shawarma is just as amazing! read more

Been coming here for many years. Alex is always warm and gracious. My favorite falafels outside of The Middle East. Shawarmas garnished with fresh cut onions parsley tomatoes lettuce. Drizzled the way you like with tahini. Juicy chicken shawarmas. Get the current special 2 sandwiches for $11.99 and thank me later. Thoroughly enjoyed the sandwiches as always read more

This place use to be good, but no longer. I went there 2 months ago and I ordered a chicken shawarma plate. The guys gives me the left over chicken bits that were cut from who knows how long. It was dried out and barely edible. I asked him for extra garlic paste and he gives me 2 scoops of it from the smallest spoon I have ever seen. I ask for pickle turnips he gives me literally 2 pieces. This has happened twice already, I thought i would give him a second chance. I will no longer be going, there. read more

Looking for a solid shwarma, falafel or both in Markham? Look no further than Alex's Falafel & Shwarma (est. 08/08). I remember when I first used to hit up Alex he was in there alone with a handful of curious customers at lunch, until he became so busy he had to enlist help. I've had over 3.2 million shwrmas in my life, and I can honestly say Alex's are solid as folk. I typically order a spicy chicken shwarma with everything and then some. Alex will dress it with all the standard toppings such as: onion, lettuce, tomatoe, turnip, tahini, hummus, tabouli, and a few other delicious additions such as garlic sauce and cabbage. The combination of toppings and sauces make for a holy medley. One of the keys to Alex's success is that he toasts the shwarmas well done via a panini press. This heats everything well together and toasts the shwarma giving it a delicate crisp. As solid as the shwarmas are I have to put in a good word for the falafels. I'm a self proclaimed T-Rex, meaning I eat meat like a greedy carnivore, so for me to skip a juicy chicken or beef shwarma for chick peas is big tings. The falafels are made to order in the store and the chip pea mixture is well seasoned, you may top it with any of the above condiments. Overall you're looking to spend $6-8 for a satisfying meal with a drink here. This restaurant deserves a solid 4/5. I would avoid going between 12-1:30pm as it tends to get busy in the rather small establishment. There are at least 4 large tables in there to sit down, and a clean washroom. Mounted above the washroom entrance is a plasma TV typically playing sports or the news. Check him out. read more

This is by far the most disgusting shawarma I've ever tasted. The skinny little joint like looking wrap has barely any meat or even vegetables in it. I honestly don't understand how this place makes money. Not to mention, it gave me a stomach ache at 3am so painful I was sent to the hospital read more

$7.50 for a Beef and Chicken Shawarma and a can of pop. The meat was dry, meat portion was ok I guess.. Cant expect much for $7.50 including a drink.. Can't really say it was a good shawarma.. Pita bread wasn't fresh but wasn't bad either.. Bakery items weren't fresh either.. Been here twice in the last 2 years or so.. Was really feeling a shawarma for lunch.. Ended up being disappointed.. Expected better quality for a mom and pop shop that's been around for so long.. read more

Everything was so dry. Ordered the chicken kebab, beef kebab, beef shawarma and the Falafel. All meat were super dry. No flavor. Even the sauce wasn't that good. Spent $50. read more

Got a stomach ache from the shawarma pita. Then with an order of 12 pieces of falafel I was charged 75 cents for some tahini to dip them in. Won't be back there. read more

Alex Shawarma is the best in Markham and perhaps in the GTA. The ingredients are fresh and Alex is friendly. The key is that he builds his wrap with a great balance of sauces, veg, meat and bread. Some places overdo sauces or meat. Alex's Shawarma is not too messy or to dry or not enough or too much meat or too big etc. The hot sauce is balanced so it does not blow your head off but has a kick. Also it is not cold he grills it just enough that it is hot and the bread is crispy. Great Job Alex. I'm having lunch at Alex's two times a week and it does not get old. read more

Very Poor quality, awful smells, awful tastes, Barely any meat! pathetic attitudes. Eat anywhere but here! I guess the other reviewers were all right! Pay attention to the poor reviews before entering. Eat at your own RISK read more

Biggest complaint was that the shish touk was mix of dark and white meat rather than nice breast pieces like every other place. Was more like large shawarma meat. Did not eat the chicken, tabouleh was sort of off, hummas was decent. Delivery was fast at least. Rice was decent, potatoes were too bland. Will not be returning unfortunately read more

New kid on the block. Good service. Nice and clean place. Decent flavour and not bad. However tli find the meat portion are not as generous as the fan favorite across the intersection. read more

Not to sure what has happened to this place since the 2009 review, but the shwarma they serve now is disgusting. The meat is dry, with very little flavor, and the toppings are pathetic. This place is a disgrace. read more

We love Alex's Shawarma! We were so sad when he closed down the location in Unionville and then by accident saw the sign on Woodbine. Whoohooo....The shawarmas aren't huge (which we like, get two if you are really hungry) but they are excellent. The hot sauce is amazing and the chicken is well cooked. He grills the wraps properly (not in the wrapper like other places). The price is really good...2 for $11.99. It's our Friday night go-to after work. Yum. read more

It's edible food and doesn't taste horrible. Only complaint is the dude microwaved my chicken and rice in front of me.... at that point I might as well have ate at home. Would highly recommend Burger King around the corner over this read more

This is the best shawarma I've had in a long time. Alex is amazing! And so nice too!! So glad I found this gem in Markham. Had the chicken shawarma wrap and he was more than happy to make it just as I like it. Originally from the beaches, this guy knows his food. Totally going back again! read more

Possible the worst shawarma experience I've had so far. Having recently moved to Markham from Toronto I've been trying to discover new places to eat nearby. Not feeling for Asian cuisine, which there's an abundance of up here, I decided to get a chicken shawarma dinner. It was cold, tasteless and tough. read more

Stopped by here because Sushi on 7 was closed. Was genuinely surprised by their deal of fries, shwarma, and a drink for 6.99. Although the shwarma is a little small, for that price it's a hard deal to pass up. Not to mention the fries are home made, thick cut, and seriously wonderful. I would definitely go again. The flavour of the chicken shwarma is great too, only issue here is size. Definitely going back! read more

NEGATIVE 10 STARS. I went too this place on 11/14/15 and can conclude it is the worst place. Not only was the chicken dry and BURNT, the lettuce mix was brown and hard. To make matters worst my girlfriend and I ended up getting food poisoning. Considering it was the only thing I ate that day I have a pretty good feeling it was from that place. Being a chef myself I should have seen the signs. The mayo was sitting on the counter not in the fridge, the guy doesn't wear gloves and touches everyone's food with bare hands, and he didn't wash them after servicing the previous customer. If it was such a lengthy process, the owner would definitely be hearing from my lawyer. DON'T RECOMMEND TO ANYONE. read more

The chicken shawarma plate is overall alright and costs $9.99. The tabouli salad is too sour and the colour wasn't fresh. Falafel is slightly bigger than a Timbit and costs $0.65 each, I thought it tasted like it has lemon juice in it too! No compelling reason to eat there, sorry. 2.5 stars read more

Some may consider the salad too sour but that's how Mediterranean food is supposed to be! Falafel is bigger than most places and the shawarma is hot and fresh read more

Alex's has very delicious food and Alex (owner) is very nice to my boyfriend and I when ever we go. I enjoy the beef shwarma the best - I even order it with "a little fat". It gives it extra flavoring and also roasted tomatoes. I don't usually order chicken shwarma as I find them to be a little dry. I've had the pistachio baklava rounds - they are amazing! It is flaky and crunchy just how it's suppose to be and it's only $2. The falafel on a pita is very delicious too - but there's not a lot of it; maybe four pieces of falafel. read more

I was there just yesterday and wow what an Awsome Shawarma I had, full of flavors, juicy meats and tender Even though the place is far from my home am On my way there right now, can't wait to get there. My wife had a plate with tabbouleh and humos And falafel she was extremely satisfied with All of it, I highly recommend trying this place Cause once you do you will always go back. read more

It was an amazing experience, the owner was very nice and the food was great! I would easily recommend this place, it's a great niche for schwarma read more

Based in brief experience. Didn't eat there, I walked out. Terrible customer service, lady put a finger to shut me up and walked away. Didn't bother to come back to take my order and took forever to prepare food for other customers. Sit down area smelled like public washroom. Pita bread was not fresh, I saw them take it out of a freezer and microwave it. They didn't even bother putting it on a grill or something to warm it. I walked outta there without ordering. read more

Amazing shawarma....Alex makes 'em the best! I find everywhere else I get shawarma it's always too loosely packed and gets soggy fast. Alex rolls it up tight and toasts it so it never becomes a soggy mess. Plus, if you're not into shawarma, his homemade falafel balls are the best you'll get anywhere. Great food at a great price....we miss you in Markham Alex! read more

Worse shawarma we ever had. The beef he brought from the back kitchen was refried, dry, tough to eat and more than 90 percent burnt. The beef looked black. Some of the food was put into the microwave to reheat before he gave it to us to eat. Not fresh. Alot of left overs from days before. It was not worth $11 per meal we each spent. read more

Alex is a nice guy and I want to give him a better review but 3 stars is what it actually is. The recipes are great, the only issue is that the chicken is too dry and feels like it was cooked a while ago. The quality of the rice isn't that great either. Despite these obvious problems with quality, I still like the place because everything else is less than 2 stars. The stuff grape leaves are really good...must try them. Ask Alex to improve the quality of his food and he will be at 4-5 stars. read more

I love sharwarma and have tried most places except this one. So gave it a try. Ordered a chicken shawarma plate. The guy shaves the meat off the rack and puts it on the grill. First sign. Got the plate to go. Menu says comes with potatoes. No potatoes. Hmmm. Ok guy asks what i want onions tomatoes, pickles , etc. Guy gives me one...yes one pickle. The chicken was dry and old. U know when the outer part is crusty - means old chicken been sitting there for some time. Couldnt eat it. Threw out most. NOTE: if u ever go to a shawarma joint and the ppl have to warm, grill or heat the meat, or the meat warmer is off and the meat is not turning....then cancel ur order and run. read more
