There is only bad reviews because people give them clothes and when the price comes they don't want to pay even though they have tons of money and live in Beverly Hills. I have been coming here since I first moved to LA a few years ago. And Carlos and Rosa along with their family staff have always been excellent. I've even had them take formal gowns and customize them to my exact vision with changing the design. Prices are genuinely fair and they are quick, work with your schedule and do really great work. Bottom Line: If you're coming here because the sign on the window says "Fast Alteration," and that is what you need, don't bother and go somewhere else unless you think 3 hours after your promised time is fast. My friends and I went shopping on Melrose avenue to shop. Based on the suggestion of one of the botique shops, we dropped one pair of jeans to be hemmed. Pretty simple alteration, right? The man told us that it would be ready for pick-up at 3pm, maybe 3:15pm of the same day, so we thought that was perfect since we needed to leave the area around 5. We went for more shopping, and on the way back to the car, we decided to pick up the pair of jeans at 5.... we arrived only to find that they've only just begun altering the jeans. They told us to come back in 30 minutes, so we went across the street to have some frozen yogurt. We came back at 5:30 and another guy told us to come back in another 30 minutes. WTF!!!!!!!!! While we were there, another guy came to pick up his jeans and they had altered it incorrectly, and he had to leave it there for them to fix what they did wrong. It wasn't until 6:15pm that our pair of jeans was completed and this made us pretty late for our evening engagement. We asked the guy to discount us a couple bucks for the inconvenience, but he refused. That would have been a nice gesture to recognise that they had made a mistake. I would not only refuse to come back, but I am telling all of you Yelpers to avoid this place and find somewhere else to go. read more

Not very happy with the service here at all. I brought in a brand new pair of black jeans to be hemmed and brought in around the ankles. The woman took measurements and said to return 2 or 3 days later with a charge of $30. When I returned and tried them on they were much longer than I had wanted and when I told her she said that's the way it looks best. I attempted to roll up the pants and there was a huge band of fabric, about 1-1.5 inches wide preventing me from rolling the pants at all. I needed the pants so left anyway. A week later I went to Santee Alley and a tailor there fixed my pants on the spot in less than 10 minutes for FIVE DOLLARS. I would give them 1 star but I try to reserve those ratings for places that perform extremely poorly, this place just got lazy. Will not return. read more

First experience here was very positive! I brought in a denim jumpsuit to get the pant legs taken in a bit and shortened. The cost was very reasonable ($35) and they did a great job. I'm really happy with the product and will definitely be coming here if I need anything else altered. read more

Guy on here giving one star for having to wait a few extra hours for them to do his SAME DAY (they still got it done the same day, did they not?) is a whiny little brat. He mentioned nothing about whether he was ultimately happy with the way jeans ended up. Just thought I would point that out. For the others who have had a negative experience here, I can't understand... -I do personal styling and was originally recommended to come here by Ben Sherman in Beverly Center about 3 years ago (while shopping for a client), as they told me Alex specializes in mod fit. Have brought a few clients here since, for everything from Prada/Dolce Gabbana to Ben Sherman/traditional Chinese suits, and my clients have been very happy. They trusted I would take them someplace good, and I have not had a complaint yet. Cost was low both times, and I plan on bringing my personal items here (Chanel, vintage leather dresses, etc.) If something doesn't work out, I figure I shoulda bought the right size in the first place and a little shame on me for assuming an affordable tailor is Chris Angel of alterations. Alex Tailor was referred to me by a local shop called Posers just down the street. I had purchased a mod style suit, and they said they only send people to Alex' to get them tailored. They did a major alteration to the suit, that was period accurate and well fitting. Since then I've had a contemporary suit done there which came out great, and I had a pair of selvage denim hemmed to the same effect. Alex Tailor probably isn't the cheapest tailor shop around, but they're very reasonable and extremely fast. My suits were both done the next day and my jeans were hemmed while I waited, about 30 minutes. They're well worth the drive from Echo Park. read more

I went to Alex Tailor based on a friend's suggestion for same-day service on hemming some jeans. I was skeptical of driving all the way to Melrose and to deal with some BS salespeople just to get my jeans done. But I trusted my buddy, and made the drive. The guy there was super nice and a straight shooter. He was patient with me being indecisive on length...and when I decided, he said he could have them ready by the end of the day. I asked him if I could pay a few bucks more and he could do it while I waited. 10 minutes and $20 (yes, $20) later I had perfectly hemmed jeans...and didn't have to make the trip back there. It all started with preparation for a black tie wedding in NY and it ended with $185 spent, 2 stained jackets, 1 broken zipper, and 2 pair of horribly hemmed pants. My bf has a friend getting married next weekend, the wedding is black tie, so he decided he would buy a tux rather than rent one. The place he went was having some amazing deals, so he got a suit as well. He needed to get them altered and turned to Yelp, which recommended Alex Tailor. Everything was hemmed without incident or so it seamed (pun intended) and he suggested I get an old dress altered instead of buying a new one and recommended Alex. That's when things started to unravel... The day I dropped off my dress he noticed a gummy stain on BOTH of the coats that they altered. When I tried on my dress at the shop after it had been altered, the zipper was jamming but we were able to get it zipped up. Cut to today: my bf suggested we try our respective outfits on to make sure that everything looked alright. As he stepped into his pants we heard a ripping noise; we looked at the hem and it looked like my 3 year-old niece had done it. I put my dress on and the zipper was sticking in the same place as it was at the shop except this time it wouldn't budge--there was a hole in it. I know it wasn't there before I took it in because I tried on the dress the night before to make sure that I still wanted to get it taken in. We just got back from the dry cleaners around the corner. Bob is fixing my bf's pants and had to cut my dress off of me because I couldn't pull it over my head or down in the opposite direction. If I could give zero stars, I would. read more

This is my go-to tailor. Has been for years. I never even shop on Melrose...but i always make a point to drop off my clothes here. I pay them a little extra and they always can knock out the job same day...often within an hour or 2. One time the shirts they did were just a little too tight...so i brought them back. they fixed them right away and i was good to go. The only issue: *bring cash. *they don't take Credit Cards. i actually suggested that they talk with a friend of mine that started a credit card / check processing company...but they weren't too into it. I'm sure they have their reasons! so if you don't like paying with cash...then not for u i suppose and i get that that can be an inconvenience for ppl. If you can deal with the cash only policy, you should be happy! read more

I've taken multiple items and some (what I consider) unusual requests: patches sewn on hats, camouflage military surplus trousers turned into shorts, rips repaired etc. I even took a belstaff waxed cotton jacket here that was too big for me for alterations. Baaaad! Bad! Bad! Bad! NO! They do a shitty job and then lie to your face about it! I brought a high-waisted skirt, a swimsuit and a dress in to be altered. I asked them to take the skirt in at the sides (and that's more complicated[read:expensive], and what they charged me for), but they skimped and took it in along the zipper in the back, so now the side seams don't hit at my sides, they hit around my back and the back seam dips down at the zipper. They sewed it crooked AND used a different color thread! than the rest of the skirt! and still tried to tell me that they took it in at the sides I was like, "what about the side seams and the zipper thread and the crooked stitching and the fact that I can SEE THE EXTRA MATERIAL UNDERNEATH THE ZIPPER!?" and the guy was like, "oh, it must have been like that when you brought it in" when I know it was fucking not! like that! when I brought it in! THEN! I had asked them to take the bathingsuit in at the sides too, and they said that was impossible (when I know it was fucking not! impossible! to take it in at the sides!) So what did they do? Take it in in the FUCKING MIDDLE OF THE SUIT! Now there's this weird seam just like, hanging out there, in the front of my pretty vintage swimsuit... Now, to be fair, it's ruched along the bust, and that's where they took it in, but then to make up for the excess material underneath the ruched part, they put in that weird tapered seam. i don't understand why they didn't just do what I asked them to do. It's not that hard, I've worked in costuming/wardrobe, i could do it my effing self if I had a sewing machine, but I read on yelp that they specialize in vintage fit (Fuck you, guy that wrote that! I partially blame you for my ruined clothes!), and I do not, happen to have, a sewing machine. Alas. The dress was fine, I had asked them to remove the sleeves and raise the skirt, and when I went to pick it up they had raised the skirt (but incorrectly-they were supposed to detach the skirt and reattach it higher on the top so there was less material on top, but they just took it in along the existing seam so there's less material on both the top and the skirt so it's way short.) and they completely forgot about the sleeves so I had to wait around for an hour for them to fix it. Bottom line--these people have NO! FRIGGIN IDEA! WHAT THEY ARE DOING! It's like they watched a youtube video on how to hem a skirt and were like, "We're geniuses! Let's start a business!" These are the kind of mistakes that students make when they're first learning how to sew, like, pillows and stuff. Not something I would expect from a professional tailor shop. I'm super bummed about the $50 that I blew on a botched tailor visit that may have permanently ruined my clothes (The skirt will never lay right again, and the suit will always have stitch marks [OH THAT REMINDS ME! THERE WAS A WEIRD WAXY STAIN ON THE SUIT WHEN I GOT IT BACK! THEY WERE LIKE, "Oh, uh, it must've been there when you brought it in... but we're really nice so we'll just clean it for you, out of the goodness of our hearts and not because we fucked up..." I was like, "oh really? just like the skirt was crookedly stitched up with the wrong color thread by the company that made it, and not by your shitty tailors? yeah. Sure.), and especially bummed that I'm going to have to pay somebody else more money to undo what they did and then do it right. And you know what? They were really nice. It's such a bummer. I'm all about customer service and all, but I'm not paying you to be nice to me, I have friends for that. I'm paying you to fix and not ruin my clothes and you fucked that up. Bad! i brought my wedding dress here to be altered cause a friend of mine said that they were great, and it seemed like a pretty simple job. my dress is an umpire waist, cotton with silk lining..and all i needed was the bust and i bit of the sides taken in. when i tried the dress on for the tailor, we pinned the sides where it needed adjusting and said "ok, thats good". im an A cup...and the fact that he didn't notice that you could fit a large lemon in each cup should have been a red flag. i pointed out all of the extra fabric in the bust and he shrugged as if saying that it looked fine to him. after a bit of pushing, he pinned the bust and everything seemed good. i came back a week later and tried the dress on for him and there was still a nice amount of room if the bust (not as much..maybe just enough room for an orange slice)...when i said " this is my wedding dress, id really like it to fit like a glove" he shrugged once again and said that the best he could do and that it looked fine. ugh. now i have to either take it somewhere else or wear padding (which i really didnt want to do) bottom line- bring in your pants to be hemmed, not your wedding dress. (the price was good($60) and it only took a week..plus the sewing was good which is why i gave them 2 stars) read more
