Avoid!!! Being new to the area I asked a very professional and classy gentleman for a referral of a tailor. So, I didn't just wander in off the street. I introduced myself and gave my referral. Blank stare in response. I had a beautiful Pucci caftan that only needed to be shortened. I teetered on that raised box while she collected money from 3 different young men picking up their clothes, mostly jeans. I waited over a month. No call or text to say my dress was ready. No one answered the phone when I'd call. Voice mail not working. Week 5, I drive back in that awful 3rd St traffic. Dress not ready! But a million excuses and rudeness were ready! It was Golden Globes! How could she have time to hem my little old PUCCI beaded caftan??!! Coworker sick. How could she possibly have time for lil ol me????? AT&T not working That's the excuse for not answering a business phone? She said come back tomorrow. I said no. Give me my dress back. She quickly took out the pins she put in. Her work, she said. Nice way to lose a customer who is a huge vintage collector, stylist and would have been a regular. Golden Globe award goes to this phony place, pretending to be something special. Had I written this review after my first visit to Hans the Tailor, I would have given a hearty and an enthusiastic 5 stars. Susan was so pleasant, and treated me with kindness and urgency, working within my budget to find the right solution for my needs I had purchased a skirt at Goodwill for around $6, and everywhere I went wanted to charge me between $25 and $65 just to hem it!!! In hindsight, I could have just left it with the first place I visited in Alhambra, but I was appalled at the price that they quoted me, as that was more than 4x what I'd paid for the skirt, and I would only be using it twice! Its hem was glued down, and it was, obviously, not an expensive article of clothing, yet everyone wanted to charge so high a price. Honestly, had I been more confident in my abilities, or known where I could go to purchase the appropriate glue, I would have just cut the fabric, glued and ironed the hem down, myself! After several trips to different tailors, I finally was referred to Susan by my regular laundry to-go place, located right down the street, Frederick Cleaners. Desperate to hem this skirt, as it was needed for only two onstage performances in less than a week, I reluctantly visited Hans the Tailor. Susan agreed to charge me $25 to hem the skirt AND the lining, and match the first offer I had received. I was so pleased with her kindness, quick and professional work, and was confident that I now had found my go-to tailor. (I should note that I am a petite size, and I often need tailoring) I was so pleased with my first experience, that I returned a second time, this time with a jumper that I purchased for $40, that I would use for my office job. I overheard Susan talking to the two gentleman waiting before me, about how this was after the holiday rush, and they have fewer items to work on, and are not as busy. Unfortunately, Susan basically acted as if I weren't even there! I waited so long, that a man came from outside to tell me to move my car, because he could not get into his front seat (his passenger side door could have been used to enter the car, as it was not blocked )... there were cars with flashers parked in the alley behind the shop, blocking the only remaining spots designated for Hans the Tailor, and I was forced to pull into an actual parking spot next door, flashers on. I then had to not only write my name down on a Post-It note so the one employee could search for my jumper, but I described it to 3 different employees (Susan included) as a 'dark grey jumper with pinstripes', and I STILL spent a full half hour waiting. She ended up finding it in plain sight. The customer service was definitely (mostly) lacking in this second visit, and it also cost about 30% more than what she'd quoted me, originally. Unfortunately, all of this waiting on a late afternoon in LA threw off all my errands, and severely interfered with my work plans for the evening. I will give them one more try. I trusted with a small thing first, then with something I moderately care for... so it still remains to be seen, if the third time will be a charm! read more

Don't listen to the 1 star reviews. They couldn't be more incorrect. Both Hans and Susan are kind, attentive, fantastic listeners to what you want, and the tailoring work is so incredibly good you'd swear it came straight from the designer fitting you like a glove. I brought in 3 dresses on the 9th. One needed a small rip near the seam repaired, one needed new straps, as a strap had broken, and the third needed a pretty significant overhaul as the bottom fit, but the top was too small. The strap and seam shouldn't have cost more than $10 together, but I knew the third was kind of a big deal so asked that they call me with an estimate if it was going to be more than I paid for the dress itself. They told me no problem, pick up the dresses in a week. So I came back on the 16th. First they couldn't find my dresses. Then they found two of them, but not the third. None of the work had been done. They had no idea what it would cost to fix the third dress, but hadn't really thought about it yet. They promised to call me with a quote. Come back next Saturday. Ummmm.....ok. The next Saturday rolls around and I head over, even though I don't have a sense of what I'm going to pay for the work. The ripped seam is "fixed" if by fixed you mean five sloppy stitches I could've done myself when I was drunk. I can fix a tear by awkwardly folding the fabric together and ham-handedly stitching it with big sloppy stitches. The point of taking it to a tailor is to make it look, y'know, GOOD again. The second dress with the broken straps had been "fixed" by them slapping on two black bra straps to my BLUE dress. That's right. Why black? Because they didn't have blue. Why bra straps? Probably because they lost my measurements and didn't remember how long to make real straps. Who knows. It looked hideous. Seriously? Black bra straps on a blue dress? What the hell?! I'm informed that if I want to wait another week they will try to find some blue material. The third dress they couldn't find. Then they located on a pile of random clothes. Nothing had been done. It was in a crumpled heap, some of the pins still in it, marking where it needed to be let out. Perhaps they thought it was garbage? Who knows. They charged me $10 for the ugly stitching on dress #1. I made them take the bra straps off of dress #2. I shouldn't have paid anything but I didn't want to make a fuss...I just wanted to get the hell out of there. I trotted over to International Silks and Woolens, bought some pretty blue ribbon that matched the trim on my blue dress, along with a couple of new needles and some matching thread, all for about $6 and went home and did all the work myself. I showed the ugly stitching to the ladies at the fabric shop and they literally opened their mouths in horror and said "You were CHARGED for this? These people made a business of this kind of work?!" Lesson learned. If the fixes are minor do them yourself. And even if they're not, don't go to Hans the Tailor. read more

Yes it usually "takes a week" but it is worth it. There's a reason that Linda Evangalista's picture is on the wall. it let's you know that Susan has fried bigger-fish than you. And, once you accept that, she will fulfill your expectations, and customize any piece of clothing you have to within an inch (or, if you need two inches) of your life. Susan is soulful and direct and respectful. I've seen her keep her mouth shut with a dumb-ass-rocker that wanted his plaid shirts cut too tight.... and I've seen her help an over-weight debutante navigate a dress. Always with respect..... and always with a good regard for the hem. If she knows you, she doesn't ask for any money up-front. She and her staff do the work - it takes a few weeks, and you pay when you get your clothes. And, Man.... do they fit. It's always a perfect fit. read more

I've been coming here for over 10 years even though it's 45+ minutes from my home, and Susan is the only person I trust to tailor my clothes. She also saved my wedding suit, which had been nearly ruined by another tailor (I learned my lesson). I'm more petite than most men's clothes are cut for, so I often have to get shirts and pants taken in (I have to slim and crop the sleeves and legs), and Susan knows what will look good on me, how to do it well, and will even be honest when she thinks it won't be worth the cost (I mean how many tailors will ever recommend NOT to do expensive work?). I've never had any issues with the work being done on time, in part because I usually call a day or two before the estimated finish time to confirm (it's a long drive!). Thanks, Susan!!! read more

They should call themselves "Hans the Butcher". I took a suit here and they had to redo it FOUR times, each time it looked worse and worse, and then they sprung extra charges on me for the changes. They kept telling me the bunching in the shoulders was my shirt even though i knew it wasn't. So after giving up on them I had to take it to another tailor and he had to undo everything they did and he made it look great on the FIRST try. He fixed the bunching they claimed was my shirt. Between what Susan charged me and the other tailor it cost me nearly as much as the suit and it really infuriated me. I would never ever go back here. read more

I've been using Susan's services for years, and used to be very happy with them. Recently, though, I've found the other reviews to be true that work just isn't done on time. I had an evening gown I needed hemmed for a wedding. Thank goodness I left myself plenty of time. The first time I went in to pick it up, I tried it on in the shop and discovered the hem was completely uneven. Even Susan agreed it was not right. She promised it would be ready in another two days. I had to go there THREE more times to get the dress, and every time I went, it was not ready, even though I was told it would be. The last time was completely infuriating because I called right before heading over and was told it would be done in ten minutes. I arrived about 15 minutes later, it was NOT done - it wasn't even being worked on!! She said, give me another 10 minutes because she had other people in the shop. A half an hour later, she still was not working on it. I am a usually calm and pleasant person, but I was running out of time and felt as though none of her promises were being kept. I finally got the dress after the shop had officially closed, and insisted I get a discount (which she did give me, to her credit). Most of my tailoring work is simply raising hems on dresses and pants. This is not rocket science, and there are too many other places out there who do decent work to have to take that much time going back over and over again. After years of using Susan/Hans the Tailor, I will not be returning there again. P.S. I am NOT a competitor! read more

I have been bringing alterations to Hans the Tailor for about 15 years. Their work is amazing for the price. They can work with all types of material and their tailoring is impeccable. Sometimes I prefer to have 2-3 fittings to make sure the fit is perfect. Complicated alterations require more work because one thing changes another. It's worth the wait for a perfect fit. read more

I've been a customer of Hans the Tailor (Susan) since 1995 and THEY ARE THE BEST TAILORS IN LA!! No competition...sorry! Yes, they do frequently overpromise re: "ready by" dates but I've learned the hard way that when it comes to tailoring, I'd rather get my garment(s) a few days later than promised vs. a poorly tailored or botched tailoring job. I'd always pout when my order wasn't ready and would break up only to later make up. Susan should be given a Presidential Honor for her work. Spare yourself the frustration and go somewhere else. Not once, in my three years of going here, have my clothes ever, EVER been ready on time. There were occasions when it took over three trips, just to pick up a pair of jeans that I had dropped off weeks earlier. And yes, I called ahead, they told me it would be ready at such and such a time, I get there, and then I'm given the option of waiting an hour or two or just coming back tomorrow... this was a frequent occurance, sooo frustrating. I only kept going back there because they do a decent job with my jeans and dresses, although nothing too spectacular. But no longer, I have finally had enough, I'm never going back there again. Things are not finished on time and they have no system for how they organize or hang up the clothing so they search in all these massive piles for your garment. I gave her plenty of time as I had been warned she was slow ... when I went to pick them up four weeks later they had been left in a corner and not even started on ... Gloria has gained and lost more weight than every one of the women on "The View" put together. Even with the enormous size of my closet, I confess I can't always find a caftan that fits - let alone a nice skirt, or slacks. When desperate, Gloria forgets about her color palate du jour, forgets about who she's dining with and what they'll be wearing... she doesn't worry about the color palate of the restaurant she'll be dining at.... all she thinks is..... "What did Susan fix for me most recently?" And, inevitably, it will fit perfectly, revealing the good curves and hiding the bad curves. Now, does Gloria acknowledge that alterations can take awhile here - sure. But who asked Picasso to finish a painting in a day? Susan is a genius. And the people working in her shop are all-star sewers. Frankly, Gloria hopes that Yelp readers believe the bad reviews, so the shop will be less crowded.
