Great grocery store if you aren't concerned with brand names. Their store brand products are a great quality. Your first time in the store it does take some getting used to. You need to make sure you have a quarter to get a shopping cart. You should bring your own bags with you to avoid buying bags from the store. Aldi has raised the bar on their produce over the last couple of years. I have bought a lot of their produce and only once had an issue. I got some broccoli that was floppy a month ago. I continue to use Aldi for most of my grocery needs. I really like the seasonal items they stock too. Also, they now carry an organic line, "Simply Nature". read more

Just like the Aldis I've been to in Europe. Not much of a selection, but that's part of the reason as to why they're so cheap, by having low carrying costs of inventory. There's only ever about 2-3 people working so the registers can be a bit low. Not sure when they get new shipments, the shelves seemed pretty bare when I went on a Sunday evening. What's really great about Aldi is the affordability of most of the items it offers. Even many of the organic vegetables are cheaper than their GMO counterparts at other grocery stores. This location is a little inconvenient to get to, it would be great if there were more in the city instead of overpriced Whole Foods. Though the inventory might seem limited, they still have a great selection of some goods, like international chocolates and other kinds of products. They particularly excel at the standard day to day necessities. Too bad this location is sort of in the middle of nowhere. read more

I absolutely love Aldi's, however, I should not have to leave DC to patron the business. This is the 7th time I have visited this particular store and had to leave empty handed to go to another location in Maryland. The 17th Street location needs a management overhaul. How can this location continuously sell out of meat, bread, and eggs. Learn your clientele and put someone that has the capacity to order items in the quantity that meets the the need of your customers. Get it together 17th Street Aldi's...operate under the quality Aldi standards, and not under the standards of this particular Aldi's neighborhood. I love Aldi. I am a bargain shopper and since I started shopping there, I have saved a ton. You can get produce at a fraction of the cost of regular grocery stores. The selection may not be huge, but it has all the basics. It kills me when I go into Safeway, Harris Teeter, etc. and see their prices compared to Aldi. If I was going to make a gourmet meal, I would probably have to get most of the ingredients elsewhere, but for every day stuff, Aldi is the bomb. Know before you go: They don't take credit cards. This is a good store!! The times I've gone it's never been crowded the employees are nice . Everything is in order and in stock . I wouldn't recommend going here in the beginning of the month though , that's welfare week. I generally go the third week of the month or at the end of the month . My family shops at this Aldi store frequently and has since it opened. There is always a great selection of fresh fruit, meats, and vegetables. The staff is always friendly and they recognize us when we shop. Although, the lines can be pretty long, the cashiers work hard to get everyone out. The manager makes sure that the store stays clean (is very important). The store's decor has recently improved, which makes the store even more inviting. The renovation was much needed as DC literally changes overnight. Overall, I give this store a thumbs up. read more

Very clean and very well stocked. Produce is fresh too. Only minus is not having enough registers opened during the evening rush but with these prices and food quality..I can let that pass. They even have organic meat. You can find some real gems in here. There are plenty of name brands at lower than most prices. Their brands aren't bad either. There's also a gluten free line. I've been shopping here for 4 months now, and still am a supporter. Pay attention - you can get basic stuff for sufficiently less that there is a significant reduction in your grocery bill. (Somebody said that there is a lot of processed stuff - - yep that's right - - but when it comes to produce, or basic dairy, its cheaper - - that's what I'm talking about.. True its not a heck of a lot of diversity on the produce, but the basics, its great). So if you go on a grocery shopping spree, stop here first, I think, you'll save some bucks, but you won't get any fancy stuff. The staff have always been quite nice. read more

I have been familiar with Aldi for over 10 years since my mother shops there. I love this Aldi, to my knowledge it is the only one in DC. Great selection of food. For several months they carried manchego cheese, which is delicious (and lactose free). Manchego is typically $10 for the size of the package that was sold here for $3-4. The quality is always good here and the service is pretty good as well. read more

I too have been pleasantly suprised, especially about the quality and price of the produce. You can get all the basics - broccoli, cauliflower, apples, oranges, grapes, pineapple, asparagus, red and yellow peppers, etc. The quality is very good for the price too - at least as good as Giant and Safeway, and much better than Murray's. My only complaint is that things tend to be overly processed, so you do have to check the labels. For example, all the applesauce is sweetened. Also, I didn't see any decent bread. Still, I plan to be a regular patron. They don't take credit cards, but debit is OK. read more

I am impressed with the Aldi store at 901 17th Street NE, DC. The store is still new, clean, and staff is friendly. Some of my favorite items are the European chocolate bars, Potato Chips, Hummus (4 flavors in the dairy case - awesome), frozen clams in garlic butter sauce - they cook up and taste fresh as ever (ya gotta try 'em), and the plantains, lemons, grapes are fresh and reasonably priced. Aldi wil do well to continue offering diverse food products to stay current with the ever evolving diverse population in the NE H street/Hechinger Mall area. Overall, Aldi offers quality food, unique brands, at a reasonable price. Take your recyclable bag(s) with you and bring a quarter along to "rent" the carts. You'll get the quarter back when you return the cart. i think they need a stronger security presence at night. If you go at night, park close to the store. read more

It is the only Aldi grocery place in DC that I know of - it saves me a lot weekly. However, never been there without either an issue or something broken on the floor, customers and some associates are sloppy. Most of the time spoiled fruit and vegetables are still on shelf. I have been shopping from there since the store opened. I like Aldi, their prices but wish to see it like other Aldi locations in VA and MD. Have to mention that after the renovation it is now better by 100 times, it was a scary place. read more

Love this grocery store. Please skip the Safeway across the street. This store is much cleaner, better prices and friendlier staff by far. I also like the new renovations. The lines can be long on busy shopping days but the cashiers are always nice once you get to the front so you forget about the long wait. And you absolutely cannot beat the prices. You might not find all the specialty things but this is definitely my go to for large grocery shopping trips. read more

I went to this Aldi the first time this weekend, and was really impressed. They had a great selection of items at really good prices, and I was able to knock out about 70% of my shopping list and paid about $25 less than I would have at My chain grocery store. It's a little out of my way, but I imagine that if I had a list where I could could knock out a large number of items, it would be worth the trek across the city. Got sent to Aldi to pick up one of the wine advent calendars. It's bad enough that they do not sell them in Maryland so I made the rush hour trek in DC rush hour traffic. I arrived at about 7:55. Stood in the line and was shocked to learn they only had 15 (fifteen) in stock and they was all they were going to get. Think of my shock as I was number 16 in line. I can not believe that they would only have 15 of such a popular item for a one time sale. Yes, there were several people behind me just as disappointed. Shame on you Aldi!!! read more

I've been to my new, neighborhood Aldi's about ten times now, and although the prices are good the checkout/last impression I leave the store with is the same every time: HORRIFIC!!! Yesterday was the worst yet. There must be a contest among the cashiers as to who can throw, slam, chuck and catapult items the hardest back into the cart. It is downright disrespectful after I've hand selected items (including produce) and neatly placed them in my cart and on the conveyer belt only to have the cashier hurl...and I mean HURL them back into the cart! Come on Trader Joe's...YOU ARE ABOVE THIS!!! Your customer service is one of the BEST in the industry, so why are giving Aldi employees "carte blanche" to RUIN your reputation? Is this the price I pay for paying less at the register? If so, I will be inclined to LEAVE MY ITEMS AT THE CHECKOUT next time my items are not treated with respect. I spent $111 at Aldi's yesterday, but I get more respect for a purchase at the Dollar Store. CHANGE YOUR CHECKOUT PROCEDURE or lose me as a customer. read more

This Aldi is very well run. Great staff and very clean and tidy. Aldi has the best value for high quality food in the District. It's a German supermarket, so there are a few things you need to know if you haven't been to an Aldi before. 1. No credit cards 2. You deposit a quarter in the cart (called a pfand in German). You get the quarter back when you are done with the cart. This mostly eliminates staff having to move around carts (this is pretty common all over Europe) 3. Bring your own bags and do your own bagging (common all over Europe as well). Aldi sells high quality bags at a very reasonable price 4. Aldi has 95% of your normal food purchases. For specialty items, they don't regularly carry them. 5. Get ready for seasonal items - they have a great seasonal selection. Think hams during Christmas and Easter and 4th of July decorations 6. German chocolate and wine is available 7. A modest beer selection and wine selection 8. Mostly private label with a few name brand items 9. There is an organic line and gluten free line. They have been expanding these more recently. 10. No awards program, you just pay a reasonable price every week. 11. Household wares rotate through during the year (think bathroom trashcans, kitchen utensils, etc). Basically, my wife and I do our main shopping here. We get Kale and a couple other veggies at another supermarket or the farmer's market. However, I'd say the 95% rule holds pretty firm. Cost is about 40-50% less than Safeway. I was first introduced to Aldi in Germany and they've managed to recreate it here in the USA in a great way. read more

If you've never set foot in an Aldi before, these grocery stores are a real trip! As you enter, there are no hand baskets; they do have shopping carts but they are all secured together with chains and one pays a $.25 cent deposit to unlock the cart for use! This system encourages shoppers (and others) to return the carts to the front of the store to get that quarter back, thus saving the store the labor cost of collecting carts from the parking lots! Inside you will find positively "run-of-the-mill" grocery staples, at very competitive prices. For $.49 cents each, you can find the same plantains that Harris Teeter sells for over at its NoMa store for $.89 each! Avocados are cheap also. The cashiers have a most interesting seated setup, that ostensibly appears more ergonomic than what I've seen at other stores. Like Safeway's Bay Area "Pak N' Save" stores, and (I believe) Shopper's Food Warehouse, YOU bag your own groceries, which, again saves labor cost. One complaint...their bicycle parking is isolated on an island way out in the middle of their parking lot; instead of being sheltered under the eaves of the roof around their store. read more

I have lived in the area for 6 years and just now made it to Aldi's. I have been to other Alid's in the country and this one by far is better. It is very clean, which is very important. Yes, they do have lots of processed foods, but they also have produce. I bought German bread, cream puffs and gelato. I actually went in just to check it out, but still ended up buying those things. Gelato is just like they make it in Italy. Delish! The bread and cream puffs equally good. Will go back again! I would like to see more organic items though. Overall, great place. read more

I'm an Aldi devotee and have been shopping here since it opened. I buy tons of produce, guilt-free, at these prices. For example, on a recent haul, I spent $127. Priced out with generics at Giant and it was $221. I only wish they got their liquor license, which I understand is on the way. read more

the 17th st, NW, DC store has some of the "worst , anti shoppers" cashier and Sunday manager on duty on 7/27/18, I returned an item costing $50+tax, and when I tried to purchase back at $25 (as a result of store discount), both of those women refused to let me buy, kept saying " you can't do that." not being a match to these two HOSTILE employees, I decide not to stoop to their level of conduct by not standing my ground. The morale of the store, WHAT difference does it make whether "I" or some other shopper purchase the item? None of course and some other shopper witnessing the exchange with the two employees, condemned their behavior questioning their behavior customer service attitude and business cumin which borderline stupid, All in all, these two reflect poorly if not badly on ALDI as a corporation and their commitment to public shoppers who help make their investment prosperous. Hopefully, the corporate higher ups can pay attention to solving customer complaints and recognize the value they bring in return on their investments. WAKE UP ALDI, you are not the only act in town!!! read more

Aldi does not pretend to be a full-service grocery store. It is a great, no frills, off-brand (for a lot of items) food store at really low prices. I didn't know what to expect when I first went there. A fellow customer helped me figure out how to pull out a 25-cent shopping cart (you get the .25 back when you return it). It looks a bit like Shoppers Food Warehouse inside but much smaller: items are kept in their boxes instead of on store shelves; so, this cuts down on needed staff. You also sack your own groceries--plus, they take debit cards, but not credit cards. Most of their regular prices are like sale prices at other stores, sometimes even lower: .89 Greek yogurt; .39 regular yogurt; .39/lb.bananas; 1.89 strawberries; 1.89 pizza. They also have weekly sale prices that make some items even cheaper. Most of the foods we've tried are comparable in taste and quality to name-brand, higher-priced foods. Some of the cereals and other items do not taste exactly the same as the name brand, and you can sometimes get meat cheaper at other stores on sale. We just try things out to see if we like them, and, over time have figured out what we like from Aldi. Aldi is now our regular grocery store. If we want the few specific brands that we like that they don't sell, we pick them up when we're at Walmart or make an infrequent trip to Harris Teeter. Our grocery bill has been cut in half compared to Safeway where I used to shop. The one thing to beware of is their produce is not on refrigerated cases. Shop early so you can buy the product fresh before it's been sitting out all day. Also, they tend to run out of certain breads and produce when you shop later in the day. I have lived in the area for six years and this has become my favorite place to shop, I am a regular sometimes visiting several times a week. I've always had a pleasurable experience while shopping at Aldi. The produce is always fresh and plentiful. I recommend this store to all my friends and neighbors that are not already regular Aldi shoppers (most of them already are). The low prices are helpful because I feel some of these other grocery store chains are way to expensive. The Customer Service at Aldi is Awesome all of the employees are super nice and extremely helpful, they all deserve special kudos. As I mentioned earlier in my post, I am a regular and like to familiarize myself with all the staff and they have all been GREAT!! I was in the store last week and I noticed a new face at the register, he was professional and very pleasant, he greeted me with a smile, I asked his name and he introduced himself as Gaylord. The great customer service that I received and always receive at this Aldi location made my experience at Aldi an even better one.  Good job, everyone! read more
