I used to tolerate going to this Aldi, located on Pulaski near Argyle. The aisles used to be so cramped, so if it were a busy time it would be just a crush to get around the other shoppers. However after a nice renovation was completed a few months ago, it is almost a pleasure to shop at this Aldi. The aisles are much wider than before, the shelves and displays are nicer and more organized. In the old days they did not accept credit cards or have Sunday hours, but nowadays they do - so I do (use my credit card, and pop in on a Sunday). You still need a shiny quarter to access an Aldi shopping cart, but at least you will have a better time navigating the store with the cart and checking out some of those occasional special deals. read more

Spacious, clean aisles, reasonable prices. However, the women's bathroom smells horrible and sticky floors. Like it hasn't been cleaned in a while. And the security guard in the store. I don't know if he did this to anyone else, but wanted to keep the quarter. He had a little attitude when I asked for it back. I always keep a quarter in the car in case I don't have one in my purse. They took away the self-checkout and now what used to be a quick and easy shopping experience is now a really frustrating haul. They don't have enough staff people or registers open to keep things moving like they used to. Bring back self-checkout!!!! read more

This location is the closest Aldi to my house. They have expanded and renovated their store. What use to parking spaces along the west side of the building has been eliminated and the store facade has been moved further west and enlarged. The expansion is nice as it provides more space for merchandise. It's bigger, cleaner and neater then before. Same low Aldi prices compared to the competition, but like everyone else their prices have also been creeping up as the cost of living continues to increase. Today Avocados for $0.49 cents w/very limited good quality avocados (most of them feel like guacamole in the avocado skin). Hey you gotta pick and choose. I got a few good ones read more

I have to do some shopping. Where? Shhhh. Aldi (in super low tones). Stigma. Blame it on my folks. Oh well. Have you ever shopped in a daze, you walk in, no list, just want some stuff. Not sure what, but you'll figure it out as you walk around. Well, that happened to me tonight. I think I was extremely tired and resorted to this zombie like shopping. I'm a Jewel shopper but, on occasion, I get an itch for Aldi since they have less aisles to wander down. I was pleasantly surprised by the cool items that I found, 60 calorie dressing, bliss bars and dirty rice to name a few. I got there right before closing, did lots of shopping for little money, now I will have to cook some of these items, for real! Just finished preparing the dirty rice. One hint, follow the directions, stir occasionally, they really mean it. It's still tasty, a little spicy and firm rice. Yum. I also got some of those honey braided pretzels for my boss. We'll see how he likes them. I'm sure they're great. Aldi really is a find for a few bucks. Don't be fooled though, the premium line is really good and is pricey for what I remember Aldi to be. They've really come a long way. Also, the guy at the register and the female security guard were both super nice. Impressive. Great job Aldi. I'll be back. read more

A boy in elementary school made fun of me for mentioning that my mom shopped at Aldi. Why? Perhaps it was about status. Well, times haven't changed! Nobody really likes to admit that they shop at Aldi. Prices are cheap, food is generic, and it's not as pretty as Whole Foods. But when your wallet is tight, this is the place to go for basic items like flour, sugar, canned fruit, etc. Didn't bring a bag with you? Just use of of the many empty cardboard boxes found in the aisles. It's called recycling. read more

We place holiday food orders there a couple of times a year for holiday distribution. For the second year in a row the order was not complete. This time, no dinner rolls. They failed to inform us that the items had been discontinued last week even though the order was placed two weeks earlier and we checked on the status of our order a couple of times. We only found out when our truck arrived and they told us.You would think a corporation the size of Aldi could figure out how to fill an order of this size. Review updated to 3 stars. The District Manager contacted me and I was told there was a supply issue and the item was not discontinued. The followup was appreciated. read more

Between buying new furniture and just having started a brand new job, cash was tight around the household. So, when I needed to stock my kitchen in my new place in Albany Park, I drove around the area, checking the local grocery scene, ignored the naysayers, and settled on Aldi to retrieve my basics. And I'm so glad I did. This Aldi location, as other Yelpers have mentioned, is clean, bright, organized, and was recently renovated. Staff is helpful (albeit a little frazzled and overworked, most of the time) and parking is definitely ample in the adjacent private lot. As far as the selection? Actually, pretty phenomenal. Being a Trader Joe's fan (the other half of the Albrecht brothers' empire), I'm accustomed to having to hit multiple supermarkets to fill all of my needs but Aldi actually got my 'fridge and pantry fairly well stocked. Their selection of spices, sauces, and basic kitchen wares like freezer bags, aluminum foil, and plastic wrap is totally solid. While most Aldi stores (this one included), tend to rely heavily on a stock of prepared, not-so-healthy foods, this store, surprisingly, has a great selection of fresh, interesting, luxury, and ethnic goods as well. In addition to my basics--eggs, butter, etc.--I managed to snag garlic hummus, spicy chorizo, hazelnut crème filled chocolate, El Milagro tostadas, honey goat cheese, and local smoked Polish sausage. The produce selection, while small, is top-notch, affordable stuff. I picked up strawberries, tri-colored bell peppers, avocados, squash, onions, and pomegranates all more beautiful than what I could find at Jewel down the road. Most of all, I didn't spend more than $2.99 on any items except one huge (like, over a pound) container of mixed nuts for my daily trail mix fix at the office. Way to go, Aldi. I will most certainly be back. To note: Bring a quarter or quarter-sized token to get yourself a cart-- don't worry, it's only on loan to the store to ensure you return your cart. Also, bring a shopping bag or be prepared to pay for some durable Aldi-branded totes. Finally? This store is cash and debit card only, baby. read more

Think it's SO funny how so many people have to comment on the "stigma" of shopping at Aldi... so what? I will bet you that few people will actually look down on you for it anymore, especially if you fix them a meal with Aldi ingredients and don't tell them. In fact, I've gotten to the point that it's almost overwhelming to go into a Dominicks or Jewel for more than just a couple specific items - too many choices that cost too much! Bags of cheese, jars of jam, coffee, bread... everything is more expensive elsewhere these days! This particular location has recently remodeled and reopened. I was only inside a couple times before and it's been awhile, so can't say too much about the before, but the after is pretty darn good. There usually isn't much that differs from store to store with Aldi - slight changes in layout, maybe, and some seem to cater to the neighborhood ethnicity (in general, it seems, Chicago stores have a larger selection of Mexican items - tortillas, beans, etc - than say, my mom's store in Michigan) and this one is no different. Love that Aldi now has the huge reusable bags and now has weekly specials on produce (peaches and plums were $.25 each for awhile and strawberries $.99/lb - yellow and orange bell peppers 3 for $1.49!) Some stores, too, sometimes have markdowns on fresh meats that are close to sell-by date, but I haven't seen that recently. Altogether, the best place to save on groceries, hands-down. Don't visit on the first of the month or on the weekends if you don't like crowds and of course, remember your quarter, but the end of your visit, you will be THRILLED at the bang for your buck! read more

While I don't shop Aldi often, there isn't much to dislike about it. It isn't the pristine and colorful display of diverse products like Jewel or Whole Foods, but it's not bad either. There are very few shelves, with most of the products stacked boxes upon boxes. Makes it convenient to grab an entire box, especially when you see the bargains. Most of the products are off-brands or re-branded items, but their quality is comparable to the more recognizable big-name counterparts you'd pay a lot more for. Finding things isn't always that easy, since everything isn't organized in the same logic as other supermarkets. Best way to shop is go slowly and identify every item as you pass each section. The produce is nothing to get excited about, but there is some, mostly in plastic bags, boxes or clear plastic cases. Checkouts are fast and efficient. When I was done shopping, I realized there was only 1 line open and I was backed up with 6 people ahead of me, all with huge cartloads of stuff. The security guard paged a store employee and within a minute, a 2nd checkout opened and things moved along very quickly. Bring your own bag or means of carrying out all the stuff you buy, as it seems most people can fill their carts to the limit. You can also use the boxes they provide near the checkout. read more

Has your grocery bill been getting ridiculous? To the point where at times, takeout or a restaurant might indeed be cheaper than cooking at home? I hear you. I think it is time to shop at Aldi. Get a quarter. Bring bags- more bags. I know, you think you are only going in for a bit but trust you'll buy more. Yes there are blaring, screeching alarms, cement floors and awful lighting- get past that. It is clean but not polished, the shelves are sorted and organized and the parking is easy. Instead of a billion options you have one or maybe two. Pipe down. This is good. It means that those items are a fraction of the cost of Mariano's, Jewel and many times, excellent if not superior quality. Imported chocolate? Yes please. Produce is limited. There are organic greens for salads- which I appreciate as kale, spinach are the base of most lunches for me. Meat is mostly ground- if you are making meatballs, chili or burgers this will do just fine. If you cook or bake- the staples like flour, butter, eggs, sugar are unbeatable in cost. If you avoid the prepackaged meals (frozen pizzas, boxed dinners) you can put together healthy options and not bust your budget. read more

Great place to go if you are not loaded financially. They don't pay people to bag your stuff and manage the shopping carts,and also don't supply free bags, so the savings are passed on to you. They offer many pretty good quality products but nothing super great like organic. But you can find great snacks, nuts, and condiments nicely priced. I do like to buy fish here as they have a decent selection of good frozen fish. read more
