CITY SLICKER I have…read moredriven by here many times but i have never stopped. Recently I needed zucchini. We were having company over and I wanted to add grilled zucchini to the menu. When I stopped in I was amazed at the large selection of items they had. They also had a bunch of great looking zucchini. The normal price for them was $1.29 a pound but they were on special for 75 cents a pound. I grabbed 3 nice size ones and the total price was $1.83. Now that was a deal. I should have grabbed more. I was also able to meet the owner Chris. She was very friendly and helpful. She actually stopped in to drop off more zucchini. She was also there to see how the store was doing. We also started talking about cooking food and using fresh veggies. As she was talking to me she was looking through the peppers. She picked up two giant green peppers that were going bad and asked me if I could do something with them. I told her Yeah and she gave them to me. In fact, I took them home and roasted them on the fire pit. I also served them to our guests later that day and they loved them. In fact, the guests used them on there brats. I know roasted peppers are not a traditional topping but I must admit they tasted fantastic on the brats. Thanks Chris for giving me these and adding to our already delicious menu. This store is seasonal. I am not sure when they close down but I'm sure when it starts to get cold. I also learned that Chris is the daughter of the famous Jerry Smith who has the farm North of this location. So all of there fresh seasonal veggies come from there. Jerry Smith's farm has a great pumpkin patch for the kids to visit in October. If you haven't been there then I recommend you load up the Family and make a trip there. They also have a Corn Festival coming up in August too. Those events take place at the Jerry Smith Farm and not here. I also have a Yelp Review posted for that location. Okay back to Green Acres. The selection was huge. They had a variety of potatoes and onions, Roma tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, regular tomatoes, 4 foot tall Dill, corn, hot peppers, green peppers, pickles, watermelon and zucchini. Everything looked amazing. In addition to the fresh vegetables this location also carried flats of flowers too. I really wanted the palm tree for $330.00 It looks so cool plus I would always feel like I'm on vacation if I owned it. So if you are driving down the road and you see a little shack at the side of the road it's Green Acres. It is the place to be. It's like farm living which is the life for me. Yeah I may get allergic from the smell of hay. I do love the country but I also love my big city too. There are some song lyrics mixed in there above...enjoy!!! See Green Acres makes me want to break out in song. I'm happy that people seem to be getting healthier. Places like this are helping us move in the right direction. We need to learn how to make food again and not out of a box but from scratch. It is not only rewarding to do this but it tastes amazing. So I appreciate Green Acres and I can not wait to stop back.

The wife says we came here once before many years ago but I don't remember it.  They've been at it here for 53 years since 1972. Normally, we avoid it due to the madhouse scene that is usually here (like when traffic can't even enter the parking lot from busy Milwaukee Ave because the parking lot is overflowing lol).  Well, it was -3F on a frigid Friday night and we were across Milwaukee Ave at the Jewel, and it was eerily quiet in Jewel, and we thought it was as good a time as any to also visit Jerry's lol. Well, it was relatively calm, and we found a close by parking spot, but there were still plenty of shoppers in Jerry's.  Their inventory is huge and truly impressive as are their prices.  No wonder this place is so super popular.  We picked up some cherries for $2.49 per lb and strawberries at a promo price of $0.79 per 1 lb container.  I would say 4.5 stars for our visit tonight, but really on their normal super-crowded shopping basis, I would still say 3 stars overall.  I don't personally think the hassle factor of shopping here for fruits and vegetables is worth it for the savings and the variety of offerings, thus the 2 star deduct.  But you have to decide for yourself, and apparently for many others, Jerry's is well worth the trip, and kudos to Jerry's for that and continued good luck and success to them.

So it's been over a decade since I've originally reviewed Jerry's, and here we are 13 years and 7…read moredays later and it's about time to update the review. Jerry's is still a gem of a produce store. They still maintain overall the cheapest produce you can find anywhere, and carry some unique produce you might not be able to find at other grocery stores. They also carry a decent variety of breads and pitas, desserts, and canned goods. The good value does come with a price though, as most of the time you'll be battling crowds of people while inside the store. Over the last decade I've definitely learned the times to avoid: Weekends and Wednesdays. Wednesdays I think they might have some sort of senior discount but it's also when they rotate their produce deals and the new weekly specials start. Though they have ample parking in the lots north and south of the store and along Milwaukee, during peak times it will be PACKED. I say avoid by going when they open or even after dinner as they're open pretty late. I find Mondays and Tuesdays to be a little less packed usually. Also, usually they have an entrance facing both North and South but the past few years during the winter time they've only had the South entrance open, I imagine to protect from the cold.

The farm stand is humble, ostensibly operated from a repurposed home, that now functions beautifully as a working farm and twice-weekly (Wed and Sat) market. The parking is limited, but this has never been an issue for me. I recommend ordering ahead, but you can definitely show up during market hours and get in and out with no issues. What can I say -- literally everything is good. The salad mix is fresh and crunchy -- delicious. The tomatoes are the best I've ever had -- if you're lucky enough to get a box of cherry tomatoes, whip up a fresh pasta sauce or add them to a salad. If you're looking to try something new, Josh's stand won't disappoint: he's experimenting with growing new berries, fruit, and vegetables. What I love most about Josh's stand is that he's always friendly and excited to share the fruits of his labor with customers. If I order ahead, my order is always ready to go -- packed up well and kept cool till I arrive. I'm so glad Back To Roots is part of Warrenville.
