TJ's Batavia stands out as the top local branch in my view. The city operates on a BYOB (Bring Your Own Bag) policy, so if you are charged for bags at the store, it's not the store's fault. The city is dedicated to reducing plastic waste & promoting eco-friendly living. Consider investing in one or two of TJ's reusable bags & bring them along on your grocery runs! This particular location has recently undergone an expansion & a complete redesign. The light-colored wood trim that adorns the store gives it a charming & inviting look. The shelves & freezers are well organized & spotlessly clean, as you can see from the photos. As their space has expanded, they have broadened their range to offer an even wider selection of flowers, plants, cheeses, baked goods, fresh vegetables, and essential pantry items! I love Trader Joe's. I hate this location. Twice I have bought food that was expired the day of purchase and it seems that in the past few months more items are out of stock than ever. The Naperville store is so much nicer, cleaner and well stocked. I know it's not the store's fault but I hate having to pay for paper bags, it seriously makes me think twice about this location in the first place, but then I go and get disappointed. It's worth the drive to the other locations if you have a choice. read more

On August 11 I visited the Batavia, IL Trader Joe's and had such a wonderful experience. The store was busy, with staff stocking shelves, yet everyone was polite, friendly, and considerate--always saying "excuse me" or "I apologize." The cashier was warm and kind, which truly brightened my rough day. This team consistently goes above and beyond, and yesterday they made me feel so much better. This was a nice location of TJs. The footprint of the store is laid out well so it felt a little bigger than my usual shop (Naperville) and there weren't too many places where people were bottlenecking (important consideration in the time of Covid!) Staff were very friendly and helpful: i was trying to find out if one holiday item I had seem online was available yet and one lady gamely checked in back for me, even telling me it was due in the middle of next week. Also, I use a cane but when I have a cart to lean on I just stick it in the cart. But at checkout time I realized it had gotten wedged under the cart's handle and I couldn't get it out! Two staff members kindly helped me to free it. If you've never shopped at a TJs, know that most products are their own brand and many are frequently only seasonally available. So if something catches your eye, better grab one now rather than waiting for the next visit, since it could already be gone, sometimesnever to return! Used to love Trader Joe's! No more!!! They have gotten rid or or discontinued many of the items we use to love. And these "kiddie" shopping carts? WTF! When did Trader Joe's turn into Chucky Cheese? These little shits are running amuck without parental supervision! They fill their carts then mommy or daddy have to remove everything these little slimy hands have touched. Good god Trader Joe's, get a clue! And with all this corona virus/Covid-19 you're still allowing children in your store.... My favorite Trader Joe's in the Chicagoland area! Always neat/organized, good store layout, and friendly staff. Whenever I come into the store with my baby boy, the staff is always willing to help and bring my bags out to my car. I tend to avoid going here on the weekends when possible because it does get a little hectic. Favorite items (like oat milk) tend to sell out on the weekends as well. read more

Purchased this sugar snap peas bag today. I don't know why I keep buying this product but I keep hoping they will improve. But I always find rot in the bag. Trader joe's is grocery shopping at its finest. If you want to get your list AND have a good time come here, or any TJ!! The staff is uber friendly and knowledgeable. If they don't carry what you're looking for they will direct you to someone who does or they may even recommend a decent substitution. If you're entertaining and want to serve a wow dessert, the Apple pie and TJ French Vanilla double churned is where it's at. We come here twice a month for the majority of our grocery shopping. This store literally gets me thru these harsh Chicago winters. read more

Friendly staff, great prices, unique food variety, free samples everyday. I like trying new things each time I go there. Consistently, these are the regular items that I purchase: - frozen blueberries - mango butter - almond butter - non-fat Greek yogurt (get the high 22g protein/serving version, not the 7g one) - chicken - whole wheat pita pockets (great for portion control) - cheeses - bananas ($0.19 each) Their rosemary raisin pistachio crackers are good, along with their multigrain pita crackers. I've tried their goat's milk ($4.49), which was creamy and had a distinct goatey taste. Pretty much everything I've tried at TJ's has been good to very good. ps - their mini cheese sandwich crackers and crunchy green beans snacks are ridiculously addictive. And their mini vanilla macarons ($4-5 for a box of 6 chocolate, 6 vanilla) are drool-worthy. read more

I had never been here before today, but decided to check it out after hearing a lot of good things about it, and I'm glad I did. I went here specifically looking for Turkish wine that I have been unable to find anywhere other than at a Turkish restaurant (no such luck). The people there were really friendly, and one of the employees helped me pick out a white and a red wine to try since I'm relatively new to the whole wine thing. When I checked out the cashier made an announcement that it I had turned 21 this year (and several employees wished me Happy Birthday on the way out), and she gave me free chocolate because it was my birth month, which was also really good. I will definitely be back here. It's a nice alternative to Jewel, and it's not expensive at all (compared to Whole Foods). They have a nice selection of wine and beer, produce, meats, and snacks. EDIT: I tried the red wine I bought and it's fantastic. $4.99 a bottle, and it's a Le Grotte lambrusco reggiano. It's a sparkling red wine, so it should be served chilled (which I didn't realize at first...oops!) read more

I always come here hungry since it's close to my gym...bad idea. Once, I walked in and was immediately greeted by a grocery clerk with a smile and a "can I help you find anything?" At the moment the answer was no, but later when I couldn't find the basil a fellow shopper pointed me to the right direction. Typically service here isn't as friendly and proactive as other TJ's but I"m usually a self sufficient shopper so not a big deal to me. Great deals on fresh herbs and cheeses. They sell anything from pizza dough to quarts of mango lassi. I always leave with a new delicious discovery every time! Small carts for kids. Samples for big kids. Must have TJ products: -World's Puffiest White Cheddar $1.99 (think Pirate's Booty but cheaper!) -taco seasoning (great blend of spices!) -chicken orange Mandarin $4.99 (just use one of the two sauce packets, unless you're trying to pack on the pounds & the sodium!) -mango vanilla ice cream bars ($3.49) -breaded eggplant cutlets ($2.49) perfect for an easy eggplant parm pasta/sandwich Open daily until 9pm. read more

Read the update review below: First time shopping here and it was great. Lots to choose from and had a pretty good organic section. Everything when well until I got to the register. The guy at the register was having a conversation with one of his neighbors, maybe family, or just a customer. After about 5 minutes he continued as if I wasent there. I think this is poor customer service. Am I not as important than every other customer?????? He continued talking. The lady at the 1st register named Marianne helped me. She was so polite and asked how was my weekend. The guys there should be trained on better customer service. I am in customer service and I would never do this. Prioritize then you can go about what you did outside of work. It's a shame 1 person ruined it for everyone there. I will go back again thanks to H Marianne. Updated 1/15/2017 Decided to give this store a second chance. I have been here a few times. Everything has been the same as before but the customer service was better. Big improvement from the last few visits. I was asked about 4 times if I found everything I was looking for or if I needed help finding anything. This was awesome everyone there was on point. Trader Joe's is the king of grocery shopping. The staff at this particular store is welcoming and involved in the community. What makes Trader Joe's great is that: 1) Prices are standardized across the nation 2) The staff will open up and let you try anything (but please don't abuse it for the common good) 3) Return anything no questions asked I've never had any problems at this store. I've found that TJs is great for their generic brands, but larger super stores that have more customer volume have fresher produce. read more

An added bonus: their corporate philosophy includes a dedication to Eco-friendly practices, donations to local shelters, food pantries and soup kitchens, as well as community involvement. Most stores have regularly-scheduled pickups by local pantries, homeless shelters and soup kitchens, for food that is out of date but still safe for consumption. I love that. I purchased a jar of capers today and was shocked to find a maggot/larva right on top of the capers. This was absolutely disgusting! I brought it back into the store shortly after discovering the insect in my food and the manager Jon refunded my money and said he was "sorry about that". He took no information from me and seemed to be in a hurry to get me out of the store. No card was offered or any type of compensation. Never going back to Trader Joe's after this experience. I understand that freak quality control issues can arise with mass production of food, but the way the management deflected the issue and offered no follow up on the issue was extremely disappointing. Make sure you check your food before eating it when you shop here. I'm glad I didn't ingest a maggot. read more

Crackers, cheese and wine... I could live on these three items alone! Well, some cured meats would certainly sweeten the deal. This particular Trader Joe's is like any other, though the layout is slightly different. The store is well-organized, well-stocked and filled with employees too chipper for their own good. TJs: Do you sell serotonin, too? The water crackers are only $.99/package! They run up to $4 at Jewel and Whole Foods. And the wine... well, I've been experimenting with some inexpensive stuff and have found happiness in the form of a $5/bottle of vino. Eureka! Though this location is definitely out of the way for me, if I find myself in Batavia for a meeting again I'll definitely run in for some crackers, cheese and wine. read more

Wherever I travel, if they have a Trader Joe's, I'll shop there as opposed to some other grocery. I love love love Trader Joe's. Reasonable prices, great selection, and friendly cashiers. Since my daughter just moved to DeKalb, IL from Austin, TX (land of Whole Paycheck....oops, Whole Foods), we were pleasantly surprised to find a TJ's relatively close by. This TJ's is about a 30 minute drive from DeKalb, but a straight shot down a uncrowded highway. All the great stuff that I'm use to getting here in Northern California at about the same prices. read more

One thing I love about the suburbs is the spaciousness and the vast amount of parking! This place has both! I walked in and was greeted by a pumpkin tree! Seriously...it was little tiny pumpkins hanging off branches of a tree. Yes, I am easily impressed. But I came to this Trader Joe's on a mission.....to find mango soy ice cream. I headed straight to the frozen food section and found it easily. There was only two left though!!! Wow, just made it. Check out was easy and the employees here are friendly. I am annoyed by the trader joes out here. i used to live in LA and i found their stores to be more competitively priced and their two buck chuck, is actually two bucks. Produce tends to be really pricey here, and the quality isn't always the best, with fruits and veggies sometimes going bad quickly. also, everytime i find a product i like, they end up discontinuing it and when i complain to the staff the attitude is "Oh well, you are out of luck" --- really??? which, interestingly enough, in LA it was the people that shopped at TJ's that got under my skin, not the people that worked there. they have discontinued frozen cilantro - i miss that and bought it often. they no longer carry cod fillets, they carry farm raised cod pieces - which farm raised is cheaper but they taste off. they used to also carry licorice assortment that was a favorite and that's gone. Other things like frozen scallops and fresh ginger are not consistently stocked. read more

Here's a tip Trader Joe: if you are concerned about public health and safety, don't allow your employees to get up close into customer's faces while forcefully advising them how far up over their nose their masks should be. I'm not sure there's ever been a century where that has been considered sanitary. I felt very uncomfortable and threatened by this employee who had no concern for my safety or even hers. I'm disappointed in the lack of critical thinking ability that I encountered today. read more

I always hit up this particular Trader Joe's on my way back to the city after visiting my family. This one is the best. Everyone at TJ's - at all the locations I visit - are friendly, but at this one they are friendly and down to earth. I have my staples - coffee (always) greek yogurt, wine, Garlic Nan, Veggie Burgers, Grape Tomatoes, Cereal, Yogurt, Soy milk and the list goes on and on. TJ's is to Dominick's as saltines are to a Chicago-style Hot Dog. From Two-buck-chuck (a bestselling wine) to a huge selection of fresh organic produce, I would go to Trader Joe's all the time if I could. They have a huge selection of sauces for stir-fry's. Their baked goods are scrumdiddlyumtious. On top of that, the wine section takes up 1/3 of the entire store. They're always pushing some new, delicious product on the customers and in this case I can NOT complain. The employees are also quite friendly. I think I broke one woman's spirit when we discovered they were out of pine nuts. She might have cried for my plight. All in all, a very colorful store. Side note: because it's the end of the season, they're selling fresh, potted herbs for $3.00 at the moment. It's an annual fresh deliciousness sale! I love coming here because this store features items that you do not see at the everyday Jewel. Trader Joe's always have new items on their shelves also. The employees here so very friendly. Their prices here are pretty decent as long as you get the right things. Sometimes I just like to walk around this store to browse at the variety they offer. Every time I walk into this store, I feel like I'm walking into another world. The surrounding area is a rather drab suburban area. Walk into Trader Joe's and it's like you've just been invited to an ongoing grocery store party. Free food, friendly employees, and a great selection of all types of food you never knew you liked. The frozen food is delicious, as is the pasta, the cereal, the fruits and vegetables, and more. The microwavable rice packets taste as good as if you made the rice with a pot of water, the tiramisu is to die for, and the alcohol isn't bad either. The employees are helpful and always ask if you've found what you're looking for, or are just comfortable chewing the fat while you check out. I once got into an enthusiastic conversation about scarves with a check out guy. Any place where I get into enthusiastic conversations about scarves has to got have a special something that makes it stand out from the rest of the mediocre grocery stores in the area. Each check out line has a different local city written on a board above it. At first I thought to use that line you had to be from that city, but was happy to see that this was not the case: a St. Charles citizen would be just as welcome in the Batavia line two lanes over. The prices are cheap, the food is good, and you just feel healthier eating this food. Take a trip to Trader Joe's for some fun while you shop, and some good food and deals while you're at it. read more
