We recently contracted Alco Glass to replace two severely cracked countertops. The process initially appeared smooth, and the installation tech presented himself professionally. However, once the installation was completed, our experience declined significantly. The installer left immediately after finishing the job without inviting us to review the work or confirm that it met our expectations. Upon inspection, we discovered several issues that were concerning. The silicone caulking was applied poorly, with uneven lines and visible gaps that should not have been present. In some areas, the silicone was not properly adhered and could easily be pulled away, which raises concerns about both durability and safety. Despite two return visits to address the issue, the caulking remains substandard and visually unprofessional. He claimed to us he had a "hard time seeing" but was not wearing glasses the first time he came back. He wore glasses the 2nd time he retuned to fix the issues, but that didn't seem to help. He also left silicone on several parts of the solid counter itself and did not wipe it away. Additionally, one of the glass countertops appears to have been cut unevenly, resulting in odd gaping between the edges on both sides. When we asked about this, we were told there were "Tolerances" allowed when cutting. I can't believe that such a difference would be allowed that it caused the gap to be wider on one side than the other. The installer also removed the white foam that had been placed between the glass and the wooden frame beneath. Rather than consulting us about replacing it, he simply colored the exposed wood with black marker and installed the glass over it. Because the glass is transparent, the wood is clearly visible, creating an unattractive and inconsistent appearance compared to our existing countertops. When we inquired about the missing foam, the installer stated that there had never been any material between the glass and the wood, which is inaccurate. Our other countertops clearly show the same white foam in place. You can even see on the wood where he colored in the remaining pieces of foam he couldn't remove with a sharpie. Furthermore, when we pointed out a noticeable gap in the silicone between the glass and the solid countertop, we were told it "could not be filled," which we find difficult to understand. Another concern is that the installer consistently left the premises before we had the opportunity to review the work, preventing any real-time feedback or approval of the completed job. Overall, we are very disappointed with the quality of workmanship and the lack of communication throughout the installation process. At this point, we will likely need to redo the silicone ourselves or hire another professional to correct the issues. Given this experience, and the fact that it cost over $2000 for such shoddy work, we would not consider using Alco Glass again for future projects. read more

I came in for custom glass for a set of factory shelves - no small order considering they were made in 1910 and super warped. They were able to cut the shelves within 2 business days and when they didn't fit, they recut them to make it right. I admire a business that is willing to do the extra work to get a good final product. I'll definitely be back for future projects. Oh, and the interior is very cute - lots of unexpected treasures and examples of custom work they can do. read more

Went in here. A neat place. They do custom glass and mirrors but thie place is also loaded with cool home decor and chachkis. I can easily see myself going back to get things for the house. Also some women's tunics, sun dresses, etc. But all is tastefully selected and displayed. I was there with my brother who was replacing glass for a picture frame and glass panels for a small lantern. Their help and customer service was tepid. Not bad or rude, but more of an order-taker and trying to really help. In short a great store with great merchandise and their glass and mirror service is good, but know what you want first. They seem to want to just write up your order. They will get info for you if pressed though. read more

Alco Mirror and Glass: Eternal Regret. In March of '21, we paid $2707 to have Alco Glass and Mirror install custom cut tempered glass into our new shower. The glass was installed by a man we know as "J.D." J.D. carried each panel in, and up the stairs by himself. He wore gloves that had seen some use. We used the shower, with the new glass, for the first time after the required "curing period." As the steam of the shower fogged up the glass, we discovered finger prints and smudges on EVERY PANEL (see pics). The prints appeared mostly in the corners, just where J.D. held the glass in order to maneuver it. We assumed the glass was merely dirty and could be cleaned. We were wrong. We cleaned the glass, first with glass cleaner, then vinegar and water, then a mix of vinegar and soapy water. We tried special sponges that "erase" anything. We called Alco. "Kim" made more cleaning suggestions. We tried microfiber cloths. Thinking the prints might be silicone, we tried a razor blade. No effect. We tried other products used to remove adhesives. We tried marine alcohol. Nothing worked. We called Alco again. Finally, Alco blamed their glass supplier "HMI Cardinal," stating that sometimes the tempering process is flawed. We called again and complained to the owner, Mr. Kalajian. He laughed and hung up. We were also told "It only shows up when steamy, so it's not there all the time, so it's not that bad." At no point did Alco offer a means to solution over the months of contact with them about this problem, outside of trying to clean the surface with a particular substance and sending out their tech (who wasn't able to "clean" the prints off and concluded that it was etched in the glass). I must wonder, if the glass is not tempered correctly, is it at risk of shattering and seriously injuring my family? How can Alco be ok with this? Every single day we see the evidence of our misplaced trust. Learn from our mistake. Don't waste your money on flawed glass, improperly installed. Don't trust Alco. read more

Like the other five star reviewer, we have used Alco many times over the years for all of our glass needs. Kitchen redos, bathroom mirrors, anything.... I just don't think the average 2 star reviews are an accurate reflection of what ALCO offers, so I'm trying to bump up the average here... We have a glass store much closer to our house, but we appreciate Alco's selection and good work. Their prices are fair. I had to laugh at the poor customer service reviews as I was there today to pick up some cabinet doors. There is only one woman working the service desk and she's nice...but not particularly "smooth," especially when it's busy. She had someone holding on the phone for so long, I thought, "that person is probably furious!" So, yeah... They probably need someone with better people skills interacting with customers. (I'd go out on a limb and guess that she's related to the owner... Hard to fire/demote/correct your wife..?) BUT, here's the deal: Expect great selection, expect great work. expect fair prices. Worst customer service ever. Needed glass for a house not currently occupied- they could not give me a time frame until day of. The house is a half hour away from me and I missed an 830 am call. I called the office and she said they were there at 830 and that I needed to reschedule for another day. How are you not going to give someone a heads up to even TRY to accommodate the fact that I need SOME FORM of a time frame. The lady was extremely rude and could careless!!!! read more

Alco glass is great! I recently commissioned two custom-size glass table tops for my new nightstands and couldn't be happier. I emailed four vendors to get estimates. Kim at Alco responded within the hour and had the best quote by far. (One vendor was four times as much!) The pieces were ready for pickup the next day and included free plastic spacers. This was a nice touch as I was expecting to purchase them separately. When I arrived for pickup, Jeff met me at the rear door so I didn't have to carry them too far. He also gave me his business card and a 20% off coupon for a future order. I was hesitant to patronize this business based on the reviews, but took a chance as it was low risk. I'm giving a one rating simply for the customer service. I was in need of three pieces of glass, all for table tops. They were all quite small (two circular with a diameter of 11.5" and one that was about 14.5" x 11"). When I went in and spoke with the women behind the counter about what size thickness I should get she seemed very agitated and bothered. Then after I determined the thickness I was looking in my phone to find the dimensions for her and she was huffing and puffing and tapping her pen and pacing. I finally asked if maybe I should come back, even though I was the only person in the store. I told her she seemed a bit busy and maybe I should leave and perhaps call before I came back. She seemed to calm down a bit after that and so we proceeded with my 75.00 order. I returned today, one week later to pick up the glass. Someone else brought it out to me but when I asked if the rubber discs were in the package (which they were not) the employee had to ask "the women" for them. After she gathered them ( I needed two different types) I was basically thrown the bag. I opened it to make sure both were in there and was told quickly "YES THEY ARE BOTH IN THERE". Yikes. This is the third time I have went to ALCO for miscellaneous glass work always hoping it would be better atmosphere and because I like to support local business. NO MORE! I will be heading to Henderson Glass after this last ordeal. This women, who I have been told is the owner, needs to learn a bit about customer service. I actually feel sorry for her as someone who is that rude must truly have a lot of anger or other emotions built up inside. So sad. read more

Paid $98 for a storm door pane. As soon as it was installed and I went to close the wooden door, the new pane in storm door shattered into a million pieces. Obviously defective. Prices are high and customer service is not good. Got a beveled mirror custom made, got it home and unwrapped it found the corner broken. They insisted I broke it. It was on foam in car, and sat it on foam to unwrap. They simply could not accept responsibility and accused me, the customer of breaking it. Only got it resolved by disputing payment with Visa backing me up. If you use them make sure you check the product before paying! read more

Ordered one smaller piece of tempered glass that said it was going to be in on Monday it wasn't. Apparently I was told the wrong day. So I waited for a phone call on Monday that than told me that the piece wasn't delivered but paperwork said it was. The driver left it on the truck. Said i would get a call next day when it came in figuring the company was going to try and make good on the order I went in 8:45am she said it was out for delivery by glass company and she was coming from Milford. Got a call at 12:18 won't be in till later this afternoon. This is my first time ordering any type of glass. I advised the lady who answered, who claims she is one of the owners, that this was my first time ordering glass and I had some questions. I got nothing but attitude from her and she had no clue how to answer any of the questions that I had. Simple questions like, "typically how much smaller is a piece of glass ordered relative to the size of the opening?" She actually got mad and said there's no way she was going to answer that question. The funny part is that as soon as I hung up with her, I called John R Glass in Madison Heights, asked the same questions and got all of my questions answered on the spot and I made the order on the phone right then and there. I placed a small order for two bathroom mirrors. They came out great and were available when promised. The price seemed ok too. The thing that really bothered me was that when I picked them up, they didn't wrap the mirrors in any covering. I found this very strange to send a customer out the door with no protective packaging for brand new glass. Even Krogers wraps up a $10 glass bottle of wine. Why couldn't this place? We had to cushion them on our car mats and two pieces of cardboard that they finally gave to us. read more

Alco Glass made and installed a custom mirror in the master bath. After 2 weeks the lower part of the mirror has a thin line of corrosion. I called about it and was told that there was no warranty and there would be a $45. charge. They came out to install the new part and the charge was paid. Two years later (2012) I called again about the same condition found on the bottom of the mirror. I was told that there was no warranty (I had not even discussed that)i and that they would get back to me. After not hearing from them for over a week I called again and was rudely told that they have no computer and it would take them a long time to find my work order. They assured me that they would call me back. It has been 3-4 months and I'm still waiting for my call! I honestly would have called them a third time except that I did want want to subject myself, again, to their rude behavior. Perhaps a Dale Carnegie course could be one of the answers to their abysmal customer service. read more

My issue required a simple answer, yet the owner (a female) couldn't have been ruder and more impatient with the four questions I posed. After reading everyone else's comments, I have nothing new to shed, but do agree that this business is sorely lacking in courteous customer service. I was advised by Ace Hardware that this store had every type of glass cutter available, so although they were a half hour drive from my home, I made the trek through congested traffic. I ordered 10 glass shelves. I prepaid for them in full. The order was supposed to be ready in 1 week. At the end of the 2nd week I called for an update. To hey had a hard time finding my order and impatiently said they would call me back. A day later I received a call that the order was ready. I drove down in the rain to pick up the shelves. Again they couldn't find my invoice so I went back to my car in the rain to get it. Then they said to pull to the back door. I waited several minutes in the rain until they finally opened the door. The same impatient lady could not find my order. She said that she would ask the owner. Finally she came back and pointed them out. I then had to load all 10 pieces in the rain by myself. Just as I loaded the last piece, the owner walked out of his office. I told him that his customer service was the worst and that I would never be back. Avoid this place at all costs! read more

One star is a common theme here....because NO stars isn't an option. This "family" needs to re-evaluate their handling of the customer experience. When I needed a broken storm window replaced I got the same "hey, that's the way it is; we know what we are doing and you don't; take it or leave it" attitude. And to add to ongoing insult, their pricing isn't competitive at all. Well I've decided to "leave it" and I'm happy to use Alco's competitor. I have tried to get a couple of items quoted over the past couple of years at alco and have found that they are twice as expensive as the rest. The women that work the counter are passive aggressive and not very knowledgeable/helpful at all. This place is horrible. They glued my table sideways then blamed me for it. They basically told me that it was my fault and they followed the glue line. I sent them a picture of how the table looked before they said they could not tell in the picture, when it was obvious. They said the only way to fix it was to try to heat it and then it could break. They refused to admit to any responsibility. The staff was rude- they put me on hold- refusing to get a manager and could not tell me who the manager or owner was. They said it was all labor charge... Please tell me how much you were paying your employees to where removing a piece of glass in the frame is an additional $40. If you want to be racially profiled, then Alco Glass is the place to go. My husband and I were constantly followed around the store by the son of the woman running the store. When we headed upstairs to look at showroom, he immediately ran up the other staircase and was there when we got there watching our every move. Once we realized we were being stalked in the store, my husband mentioned to the woman running the store that we did not appreciate being stalked by her son. She laughed and said, I am very proud of him. So, as I said at the beginning of this review, if you want to be racially profiled, then Alco Glass is the place to go. read more

First customer in the store and no one else waiting, and the clerk couldn't act more impatient with us. We knew nothing about custom shower doors and they have an enormous showroom, filled to the brim with "gifts" and cheap jewelry. There was also a TV with loud cartoons (but no kids in sight), which we found distracting. They literally have dozens of options and finishes, but the clerk repeatedly told us how only euro doors were popular and that's all anyone does anymore. Ok... good to know I guess... but then why cram in all these options that no one supposedly wants? When we asked about the other options, she seemed put out to reply. Their base quote was $2400 for standard sized doors you can buy at Lowe's for $800. She didn't give us anything in writing and just barked a number at us. We left and went down the road to Howie's Glass in Royal Oak - another local, family owned business - and they were pleasant, PATIENT, and quoted us $1,200, which is reasonable since it's custom and they install. It's a no brainer of who we'll be working with. read more
