We were able to smell over 30 different scents, and I'm telling you, the scents are spot on! If you choose baked bread, it literally smells like baked bread. I also love that you can make so many different products, including hand soap, body scrubs, diffusers, and candles. The candle pricing was a little confusing to me because I'm not really sure why some are more expensive than others, but the holders are absolutely beautiful. If you'd told my (much) younger self that eventually my Saturday afternoons would consist of doing 'domesticated' things like candle making instead of stumbling around NYC causing all sorts of shenanigans... well, there would've been a brouhaha, to say the least. I surprised the Mrs. on Valentine's Day and we had a scent-sational time here. It's set-up 'buffet style' - starting at one end of the room and you slowly make your way down a wall with an absurd amount of options for what catches your nose, then a section with various options (sizes/styles) for the container to house your eventual candle. Back to the 'bar' to start working on your candle (with the help of the amazing staff) and before you know it... you're done. (Well, you have to come back at a later time to get the finished product.) The 'activity' was slated for one full hour but within 30 minutes almost everyone was done and left. (We were the only couple imbibing - so we were there pretty close to the full 60 minutes.) I can't say enough good things about the crew behind the counter - ebullient to the nth degree. The shop looks amazing, the candle (I got to pick it up a week later) is great and most importantly: I got brownie points with the Mrs. for the unique and memorable experience. What a fun date night or friend activity option in Montclair! I do not believe they do walk-ins, but you can reserve for 1 to 12 people when picking a time/date to stop by. Feel free to stop by a little early to give yourself plenty of time to smell allll the scents in their extensive collection. After your reservation begins, you get a little clipboard to go around and choose all the scents you enjoy as well as pick the product you plan to make (final cost differs based on your chosen product). You get seated at the scent bar with a little mixing plate, and various equipment based on the product you select. The alchemists were very helpful in showing you how different scents might smell together, and tips on what scents may overpower another or what pairs welll together. Be warned though, once you start pouring, there is no going back. I choose to include 4 lovely scents in my mist spray, but you can have just 1 scent or even more depending on your preference. After you are done being a little alchemist in training for the day, you bring your finished product to the cashier to wrap up in a lovely gift bag before you are on your way. Be warned, the candles take about 2 hours to cure enough to take home, so factor into account you will need to come back when selecting your product. They also have prepared products (mostly candles) available for purchase as well, if you don't have a reservation but want to stop by or want an extra something special to bring home. read more

Alchemy Scent Bar is the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion! I've been to Alchemy for birthdays and family get togethers. Alchemy provides customers with a unique experience, which is to create your own candle. Upon entering, you will notice an alphabetized wall of scents. You pick up a clipboard and begin to narrow down the perfect scent for your candle. On the clipboard you write down your favorites as you mosey your way down each shelf. The scents are also seasonal. I've visited for fall and summer scents. You get the cool opportunity to choose a vessel for your candle. You can even make wax melts! After you complete your clipboard, a staff member will help narrow down your top 3 scents. Every staff member I've encountered has been quite accommodating. If you do create a candle, it usually takes 2-3 hours to set. You will most likely need to pick it up afterwards. The wax melts are ready within 20 minutes or so. I would recommend dining after this experience since there are so many great restaurants in the area. Then, you can come back to pick up your candle. If candles aren't your vibe, you can create a spray or hand sanitizer. The scent bar has gift sets for you to purchase or pre-made candles. While creating, you are welcome to enjoy your own drinks. This is BYOB. I highly recommend making a reservation online for the perfect experience. Your area will be reserved and you won't have to wait. I believe walk in's are okay as well, reservations are recommended. Alchemy is located next to an ice cream spot (Benvenuti Montclair), sandwich spot (Dutch's Sandwich Shop), diner (Raymonds) and so much more which makes Alchemy the perfect spot to hang out and enjoy good eats before and/or after your visit. The space is beautiful! I love the open concept and it's upkept very well. When we walked in, we were greeted by the staff and seated at our designated candle making area. You can create your own candle, reed diffuser, room spray and more! My bf and I opted for a candle and the container choices are great! Each container is priced differently as you'll see on the shelf. Once you choose a container, it's time to choose a scent. The selection is HUGE! They told us to narrow it down to a couple scents that we love which was 90% of them, haha. After choosing our top scents, we made our way back to our station and the staff brought over each fragrance oil to see how we like certain scents together. I went for agave, anjou pear and lychee. My bf went for bonsai, palo santo and bordeaux. Once we mixed in our fragrance oils and poured them into our candle container, it was time to give the candle a name. I chose "self love" and you can decorate the sticker to stick under your candle. If you make a reservation early enough in the day, you can pick up your candle before their close or you can visit when they are open again. I had an amazing time at Alchemy with a friend! We made a reservation online ahead of time and the staff called a day before to confirm and to provide parking recommendations. The place was surprisingly filled for 11 am on a Saturday, but the staff was very friendly and quick to help us out and give us the rundown of the place! We started by smelling the available scents from a wall with candles with every scent you could think of. After writing down the scents we liked and potentially wanted to include in our product, we went over to the wall to select the container we wanted. There were many options to choose from and we could make a candle, soap, body butter, etc. but we ended up deciding to make candles. The staff provided much-needed guidance on the combination of scents that would smell the best and ultimately let us choose how much of each scent to include in the final mix. For the candles, we were actually able to make the candle wax ourselves by mixing it with the scents which was very cool. After waiting for a couple hours, we came back to pick up the candles and were very satisfied with the final product! The place inside was very cute and aesthetic and this was an overall 10/10 experience. I would highly consider stopping by or making the trip to Alchemy for a great time! read more

I've done candle-making before, but this place was new to me--and it offered so much more! In addition to candles, you can create sugar scrubs, body butters, sprays, wax melts, and more. I ended up making a sugar scrub, body butter, and wax melts, while my daughter made body butter. The staff were incredibly kind and helpful, guiding us as we experimented with combining just the right scents. I have to say, my sugar scrub--lovingly named Embers and Earle--is amazing. Went here for a girls night and the place is a BYOB so it's definitely something fun to do. However, I would say the prices are a bit steep. Prices are based on the container you put it in range anywhere from I would say hi 20s or low 30s plus. It's definitely an experience and the staff is super friendly and I did not feel rushed at all. They let you take your time to pick your scents and are willing to stick with you while you change your mind 1 million times. I will come back here in a group if they wanted to come but probably not recommend it as an activity only because I'm not a big scent person. However, if you're into candles, I 100% would think that this would be something fun. My only downside again with the pricing. Also note that the candles take 1 1/2 to 2 hours to solidify after you make them so you have to come back for them. You could do that same day or come back at a different time. read more

You make a list of your fav scents (they have over 100 oils!) and pick a vessel-choices are candle, lotion, room spray, diffuser, hand sanitizer. I picked the signature Alchemy candle [$31]. Great price point for a custom candle! The staff are so helpful too! Mine looked at my list of 20 oils and helped me find a combo that I liked based off boldness and scent categories. Then I proportioned it out to my liking and mixed it into the hot wax, let it sit for a couple hours while we went to brunch and I was done! They pack it up like a cute gift too. The process can take 30 mins- 2 hours depending on how fast or slow you want to take it. The whole decor and vibe is super cute, very modern with a color theme of black white and touches of gold. Oh also it's BYOB and conveniently there's a wine shop next door! PRO TIP: add more bold scents! Your candle is going to be 25% oil and 75% soy wax so if you want it to be super fragrant add more the bold oils. It's going to be more diluted then smelling it right out the tube. Return?
