Felt a little let down at my last visit. My food came out cold and I had definitely gotten fries from the bottom of the barrel. I was trying to keep an open mind on the walnut burger I had ordered (normally I'm a big fan of these) until I bit into something very moldy. That ruined the rest of the meal for me. I also had ordered the lavender, mint lemonade and that was pretty tasty. Make sure you get it down fast though. If the ice dilutes it enough the flavor becomes unbalanced. I will say it was awesome that the two of us were sat right away on a Friday night around 7. Alchemy is one solid joint in Madison. I've been twice and haven't had anything bad. Between the great food and the stellar service how can you not give it a five star review? Prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is perfect for being a neighborhood joint. This particular visit we had the wings, french fries as well as enjoyed a few beers plus had the mushroom bisque. Wow was that soup good! Alchemy seems to always have a soup bubbling up in the kitchen and this weeks soup was no disappointment. As a matter of fact the entire lunch was excellent. I really wanted to order a burger too but being that we had dinner plans i couldn't stuff my face fully! We will be back again, that is a given as our Madison framily only lives a couple of blocks away. As always I expect Alchemy to be serving up the goods correct as they should! There were a lot of pictures and tips to get the BLFT and/or stuffed grilled cheese, but I'm a man who needs his meat! Instead, I went with the grilled chicken breast sammich, called the House Boat.The House boat had this extremely flaky fluffy bread, too flaky for me, but then again, I'm more of a unleavened bread type of person. The House Boat was served with jalapeno relish, tomato, greens and gorgonzola. I got the habenero basil aioli on the side, along with their house fries, which resembled more like potato chips -- not crunchy, or soggy. It's weird -- when it comes to chips, I like em generally crunchy, kettle-styled. Regardless, the sandwich was very tasty. They have a small outdoor dining area, three small tables, and are dog-friendly. Food came out fast, service was really good and informative, and overall, a pretty nice lunch dining experience. Love this neighborhood restaurant- the food is on point. We went last night in search of some drinks, sweet potato fries and dinner. The huge let down? The bartender. It was the nicest day of the year so far and everyone was out walking and dining. We all understand shortages of staff in EVERY industry and are willing to be patient. But please be nice to your customers. We put our names to wait for a table and we're willing to wait 45 mins. The kindness of the wait staff & hostess trying to make things happen on a busy night was a commendable effort. Waiting for any acknowledgment from this unpleasant bartender was terrible enough. No one needs sarcasm, rude tones, and eye rolls for ordering a simple drink. After watching this sad show for about 15 mins unfold, trying to just get a drink, we walked out. From it's enticing tavern like feel, to it's rich and flavorful foods, Alchemy is definitely worth a try. The food is incredible and cooked wonderfully. My family had the chicken sandwich (spicy!), the fish tacos, the portobello burger, the kimchi Rueben, and the apple rum burger. The Kimchi Rueben sandwich is a must for meat lovers. It is a creative blend of flavors and the meat is so tender. My family also enjoyed the seasonal salads, the sweet potato fries, and the delicious sauces. The aioli sauce was gone in minutes, it was so tasty. The blueberry jalapeño jam is not for everyone but if you're a foodie like us we recommend giving it a try! Additionally the blueberry kombucha was one of the best I've had, (even kombucha haters in my family enjoyed), it had a fragrant scent, and a wonderful flavor. I would have given five stars, but they don't accept Credit Cards - Cash and Check only. Service at the bar was ok, he seemed a bit annoyed we didn't know straight away what we wanted and slid the beer menu towards us. Once we ordered our drinks he did smile and thank us. Saved by the smile. There was a wait, but the restaurant was dark enough so we didn't feel like we were on a stage waiting on display. They cleared tables quickly patrons didn't seem to linger too long, perhaps because you couldn't really run up a tab here due to cash and check only. (maybe it is a good thing) The server we had was timely, pleasant and patient. She even settled a table bet about the type of ketchup that was in the generic refillable bottle - it was Heinz! A+ in my book. However, the fries were so good, that I didn't need the ketchup. Nachos were delicious and spicy. My salmon BLT was tasty and FILLING. (see picture). Salmon was a big piece in delicious multigrain bread and the bacon, well, it was just perfect. Something about the midwest and their bacon. THEY DO BACON RIGHT!!! Everyone at the table seemed to enjoy their meals as well and of course the beer. Nice selection of local craft beer! Waitress seemed to be right there whenever we thought to look for her. When I first moved to the Atwood area, I actively avoided eating at the Alchemy. It just seemed so hipster and was likely to be incredibly overrated as everyone kept telling me "it's the best". Almost all of our friends somewhat regularly hang out at the Ideal, so naturally the Alchemy is an easy and convenient choice for post beverage eating. The first time I went, I ordered The Matilda which is a sandwich with squash and some other stuff on it. I was NOT impressed. I didn't think it was good at all and the restaurant is a little pricey so I was especially disappointed. Some years went by when I flat out refused to eat there and give in to the hype of a not even good restaurant - which I feel happens with A LOT of restaurants in Madison and I avoid them. Eventually, I gave in. My fiance loves the Alchemy and he ALWAYS wanted to eat there. I decided to give it another chance. This time I ordered the steak. It was fabulous. The restaurant wasn't insanely busy and the service was great and quick. We literally go there ALL. THE. TIME. now. Seriously. At least once every two weeks. Now I pretty much always order the flank steak. It comes with a seasonal vegetable and mashed potatoes. The vegetables so far since I started going back have been Brussels sprouts with some kind of delicious sauce and now it's collard greens with bacon. Both are absolutely DELICIOUS. Cooked perfectly almost every time and just so dang good! The steak is always awesome no matter how I order it cooked. Mashed potatoes are legit my favorite food in the world so you can't really go wrong there. ALSO, Tuesday is $12 bottle of wine night. That's right. A whole bottle. $12. (The organic wines are $15 but still a heck of a deal!). We go there on A LOT of Tuesdays. All in all, I was so skeptical of the Alchemy. I gave it a chance and it disappointed me. Had a great time at dinner here on Friday night with some friends. There were six of us, we arrived at around 7:45. The restaurant was fairly busy, and we were told we could be seated in 30-45 minutes. Luckily there were spots at the bar to hang out while we waited. The bartender was very aloof and pretty unfriendly to be honest. She messed up our drink order, but was very prompt at fixing her mistake, and there was no harm done. To our surprise, we were seated within about 20 minutes, and were given the best table in the house (right by the window). The server was SO nice and outgoing. We ordered fries and wasabi green beans for the table. Both were really good, especially the green beans, highly recommend! I ordered the chili flank steak for my entree. It was delicious and perfectly cooked! I barely needed a knife to cut it. It came with mashed potatoes that were also very good as well as seasonal vegetables (maple glazed Brussels sprouts as it were). I hate Brussel sprouts, they were awful but I'm sure if you like those mini cabbage looking pieces of vegetable, then I'm sure they are fine lol. My husband got fish fry that was also very good and everyone else loved their meals as well. My two gripes; why can't you just suck it up and take credit cards? The ATM inside ran out of cash while were were trying to split our bill between us... good thing for VenMo is all I can say. And the wine glasses are very small and sad, especially for enjoying red wine. A nice wine glass can make all the difference when enjoying a good red. Such a big fan of this place. One of my go to spots when my wife and I want to go out for a bite to eat. Take note that it is cash only, they do have an ATM, so no need to go out of your way if you just want to come right to Alchemy from your house but have no cash. The food here is spot on. Try anything, I mean that. If you want some advice, try the wings & or sweet potato fries for an appetizer... you will not be disappointed. The spice and the flavor on the wings are right on point, even a little chocolaty. The dip for the fries will have you double dipping in no time. Tinshack burger, portobello burger, grilled cheese w/ veggies are a few sandwiches to check out if that is your thing. Try their special, whenever they have a special, just do yourself a favor and go for it. If you aren't feeling the special then check out the Flank steak, ribs or fish tacos. Flavor for days. Not to mention that this is a place that has a great atmosphere, w/ dim lighting that makes ya feel like you could just roll out of bed and stumble in for an amazing meal. Today was my first time ever visiting this restaurant, and we came in around 4, right in the middle of happy hour. There is an excellent selection of beers and mixed drinks, so I had a sour beer--something that included passion in its name but I can't remember all that well. Our server was friendly and attentive and our food came out quickly. I had the perch tacos, which had a nice amount of acidity and it was a good portion size. The fish was well-cooked and fresh tasting, so no complaints here. I tried the house boat as well, which was surprisingly moist and tasty (considering that chicken breast tends err on the side of dry). My husband and I stopped in for dinner over the weekend before a show at the Barrymore. We were surprised to see that it was cash only, but at least there is an ATM so that alleviated that problem quickly. The place is very small, which makes it cozy but also troublesome if you are looking for a fast meal. The addition of broccoli, carrots, tomato and red onion made it seem healthy, which added lots of flavor to an already delicious sandwich. I had a side of the homemade Alchemy fries, which were yummy because they were similar to wedges but thinly sliced. I definitely am not a fan of lots of potato, so they were perfect. Recently visited Alchemy when visiting family in town. It was a place that several of them had wanted to try based on personal recommendations and we were all glad we stopped in for a late dinner. Parking was hard to find in the area, but once we got inside everything was really good. We had to wait a few minutes for an open table to be cleaned, but that was understandable as the dinner rush was just finishing. The staff were friendly and prompt with our food and drink orders. They were out of a couple things (again, we were there late), but the staff recommended items we ordered were delicious. I would definitely stop by again when in town! read more

This restaurant/pub is a quaint local neighborhood joint. I think they decided on the name Alchemy because the magic that's performed in the kitchen! My wife and I happened on it by mistake. Thank Goodness we did! I decided to try the Pad Thai (1st day on menu), I'm soooo very glad I did, AMAZING! This Pad Thai could give any street vendor in Thailand a run for their money.
