After 40 min, I stepped into the store and greeted Dragon Mak (who now appropriately looks decades older than his photo on the wall). As we waited for the egg tarts to finish baking, we chatted in broken Mandarin about how his wife passed away 6 months ago, how much it cost to bury her, how much it cost to purchase his nearby home decades ago, how he used to live in the Houston Chinatown and how affordable it was back in the day... We walked in (it was freezing) and the whole place looked like a Disney-ified version of the original Big Dash. There was one woman working, and she was very friendly, but what a different experience than mingling with the original owners in the unpretentious cozy ambience. The worst part is that the ice cream is nowhere near as good! The original Arabic ice cream's level of rose water was off and the ice cream's stretchiness felt less organically created. The pistachio was OK. Our daughter got this crazy container of small individual frozen fruit shapes that were covered in chocolate. Those felt cute and special and we liked them all except for the grape. Again, we're happy for Bigdash's success. They deserve it. But we will not be back again because what we loved so much about this place is no longer. Tis the American way, alas! Three stars and sincere best wishes to them.
