Now, prior to heading out to Girdwood and taking the trip, I read the description and thought "Eh, this sounds a bit campy." We did it regardless and do not regret it. Riding up a mountain, playing with puppers small and large, going on a ride in a cart pulled by aforementioned dogs.. sounds silly but it was more fun than watching a kitten chase a laser beam. Mother nature also graced us with a clear, 70 degree day as well. That helps! I've read about some blatant dog abuse that goes on with certain teams or kennels that are associated with the iditarod. Taking that into consideration, these pups did not appear to be mistreated in the slightest. In fact, you could tell Nick absolutely adores all of the dogs and isn't just putting on a show for the tourists. He talks about them as if they were his kids in a sly, goofy way that's rather hard to describe. The doggos, despite short leashes and funny looking houses seem as if they are quite well taken care of and are absolutely ecstatic about doing their job -- running! Shockingly enough, they're equally as estastic to meet strangers as well! If you're looking for a great way to spend an afternoon, check these folks (AND CUTE PUPS) out. Nic gives a interesting introduction and you are encouraged to interact with the dogs. He tells stories about himself and the dogs. You then learn how to harness the dogs and off you go in his cart. Taking turns through the sometimes dusty trail on a thrill ride. You finish the tour at the puppy pavilion, where you learn more about the racing and then PUPPIES!! We had enough time to ask questions and never felt rushed. I'll spare you the details, except to say there is a one-way tunnel with a schedule for when you can drive through it, and Phil managed it perfectly by showing up more than an hour early. We paid for a private 9-hour tour, which was convenient because the van securely held our luggage the entire time until we eventually got to the Anchorage airport. Phil customized the tour based on our preferences, so we were able to do some excellent hikes and got to see some bears, moose, elk, and others at a wildlife sanctuary. Phil is a good historian and had plenty to say as he drove us around and accompanied us on our adventures.

Each of the lodges is incredibly quaint and homey. They give you a backwoods vibe, but with all of the amenities. Every person we came into contact with won our hearts, especially Christine the guide, Kevin the hiking guide and ornithologist, Evan the chef, and Laredo the fishing guide. All the food is AMAZING by the way. Had such an amazing experience that I think I'll be trying to come back and work for them next summer if they'll have me.

These people are the "Real Deal". For the past year, we have been following their Instagram page, and were very excited to go. Making reservations and speaking to them on the phone from Florida was great. We arrived around 12:30pm for our 1pm tour. They give you a once over of your gear and offer to upgrade any of the gear you may need (boots, jackets, helmet, Google's, etc) all at no extra charge. Once everyone is ready to go, a short 15 min ride to the jumping jumping off point, a quick snowmobile training lesson, and we are off. We spilt into two groups of 6, and the snowmobiles were good machines and got up to 50 mph on the open path. It's 14 miles to the glaciers which is a fun spectacular ride. Once at the glacier plenty of time to walk around and enjoy the surroundings. After about 30-40 mins, you start to head back and again see all the beautiful views. This company is the best around (even our hotel staff agreed) and our experience confirmed it. If you have any doubts, let them go and go on the Real Deal Tour.

After I posted a negative review on Google, the business owner falsely claimed that I had never toured with them and even resorted to personal insults. I later noticed that the company responds to every negative review across platforms in a similarly confrontational way. They frequently justify their behavior by saying they are a "small family business," but that does not excuse dismissing legitimate safety concerns or attacking customers. If anything goes wrong during your trip, be prepared for this company to deny responsibility as if they are not grown-ups.
