Mike and Shannon were the best guides for our one and only experience. Josh picked us up and we were off to their cabin where by 11 pm we're seeing auroras across the sky! The lights were so beautiful and the entire group got to experience VIP photo shoots! The skies were clear on our night and we enjoyed hot cocoa, snacks and even a small walking trail! Once clouds came along we picked up and drove to a few other locations in the area in our heated van! Nice and comfy with a great group of folks until 2 ish. Went in March 2024. It was very fun chasing the Northern Lights! It felt almost like we were hunting an animal by how quickly we would go from place to place and how we kept our eyes peeled for it in the sky.. We were able to see them in 4 separate locations (with the final location being the longest and clearest on the cloudy day we went). Hot cocoa, hot apple sider and hot tea were provided as well as snacks along the way. The driver even took photographs of each person in front of the auroras that we saw. The only negative: The caravan showed "oil change required" and "brake fluid maintenance required" when we first got in. That was a little concerning considering we were going 2-2.5 hours into the wilderness and it was still very icy outside. read more

INCREDIBLE. This was the best experience I could have ever asked for. Jacob picked us up from our hotel in a new Ford transit van outfitted with cushy seats and more than enough legroom. Tons of snacks, water, and hot refreshments were provided that he was more than happy to make for us. The drive to the Northern Lights was amazing. Jacob told us all about Alaska, the lights, and answered all of our questions. We took a quick bathroom break halfway there, and headed to the predetermined location. We were provided hand warmers too. With Greatland's knowledge, we were able to go to the best spot not known to the average Joe. Jacob took professional photos of us, and showed us the forecast for the lights. This exceeded my expectations. The amount of amenities, comfort, and knowledge provided was more than one could hope for. I would 100% recommend taking a tour as you receive more than what you pay for. read more

I had a great time with two tours with Greatland Adventures. My first tour was with Justin for the lights show. He was great, professional, friendly and fun! I appreciated his enthusiasm and gungho attitude (despite how bitterly cold it was). I was treated to an amazing light show! And also great photos. Greatland Adventures provided them to us digitally the day after. They turned out great and it was a pleasant surprise for me. My second trip was with Matt to Matanuska Glacier. He was also very friendly and knowledgeable. Our hike through the Matanuska Glacier was great and fun! And Matt was really informative about the different types of ice and other geological features. After 3 days of a 5-day trip to Fairbanks, all with the intention of seeing the aurora, I was freaking out because the cloud cover wouldn't budge. Despite having a list of the most popular spots to see the lights, I was batting .000. So I did the thing I had told myself I wouldn't and booked a chaser tour. And it was completely worth it! I called Greatland Adventures at 4 p.m. on the day of and they had 1 spot. Mike picked me up five hours later and I'd spend the next 6 hours with him and a fun group of like-minded people who happened to pick a rough week to visit the area. While driving around, Mike was not only knowledgeable about the aurora and able to explain in plainspeak with colorful metaphors but also full of other stories from his travels and a great conversation. He kept his van-ful of people engaged the whole time. We ended up trying three spots, using his, his partner's and his company's office team (which stayed up with us) to track weather patterns in addition to aurora intensity and attraction. The first spot didn't work for the lights but provided an amazing night sky view until the clouds returned. The second also didn't pan out. But the third, which happened to be at Greatland's property in Fairbanks that Mike also calls home when he's working, provided terrific views and even better pictures considering the circumstances. I wasn't able to find the lights like this on my own. I told Mike he saved my trip. By 6 a.m., when I was dropped back off at my rental, most everyone was still buzzing with excitement. read more

They even provided cold weather gear for the experience which made the whole experience even more amazing. This was the highlight of our trip to Anchorage. We were so hoping to see the Aurora and read great review for Greatland Adventures on Yelp. We thought it was a bit pricey, but it turned out to be worth every penny! Dana picked us up at 8:00pm at our hotel and we headed out for a 2 hr drive to get away from the city lights. These folks know the perfect places to go to and constantly check weather conditions as we travel. We stopped in several areas and saw the lights in all of their glory. Dana took great pictures of the aurora as well as my husband & I. PS make sure you have a great camera or phone with a great camera on it, as the lights are tricky to view with the naked eye. Arrived back at our hotel close to 5 am happy as can be! Dana sent us a link to all the photos she took on our outing. Yay! Well done Greenland Adventures! read more

Went in April 2024. My husband and I took our 13-year-old granddaughter to see the aurora over her spring break, knowing it was late in the season but with our fingers crossed she would still see something memorable and exciting. We almost didn't. Our first aurora tour was with another company. We were picked up at the hotel and taken to a cozy, warm lodge with snacks and drinks, very nice people and comfortable sofas for napping. Our guide kept checking his computer, heading outside now and again--and reminding us that no one can predict whether the aurora will appear. Thankfully, the next night we went with Greatland Adventures, and things could not have been more different. As a matter of fact, we consider our aurora trip to be not only a "travel adventure" for all of us, but more importantly a "life lesson" for our granddaughter: you can't sit around and wait on the good things you want to drop in your lap. You have to do your homework and figure out what you have to do to get what you want, then get up and go after it. With enthusiasm. That's exactly what our guide, "Aurora Merlin" Mike did. He researched what the satellites were picking up about solar activity, studied the weather reports on cloud cover and winds, listened to chatter from other guides--and off we went. Clearly, Mike had mapped out every hidden-away pull-over and secluded parking area for miles, lovely places where the aurora might be viewed in wonder and peace without the distraction of a surrounding mob. His depth of knowledge was most impressive about the aurora and about photography, his excitement was contagious, and still, he was attentive to the needs of individuals on his tour. He involved all passengers in conversation to put everyone at ease, engaged the group in decision-making about where to head out, offered chairs for us "elderly" folks-- Altogether, a truly rare and remarkable experience. One night the aurora hit a home run with a "blooming" in the sky, another night the aurora "showed off" with a purple band above the clouds. Each night was perfect in its own way, and with the cloud cover over Fairbanks, we would have seen nothing had we waited on the lights to come to us. Nothing. In the airport on the way home, I heard two groups talking about their attempts to see the aurora. One group stayed five days, another two. Neither group had seen anything of the lights while they were there. Nothing. Both groups had been told by their guides that it was too late in the season, winter is the best time, no one can say when the lights will appear, the cloud cover was bad-- Every word of that is true. Every word. Yet, we saw the aurora three nights (including the night they were visible from our room in Pikes Waterfront Lodge). "Aurora Merlin" Mike, we thank you for your patience with the old folks and the early teen. None of us will forget the incredible wonder of the aurora, and we pray the youngest of us remembers the "aurora life lesson" of don't wait for good things to come your way: know what you want and go after it. Just went to Alaska, for the first time, last weekend (for Valentine's Day). We were only there for two and a half days, so we wanted to do the most! Enter Greatland Adventures. I found them on Instagram, while we were researching Northern Lights tours, and after I saw the pics, I knew we were going to do their tour. They called us a couple hours before the tour, to give us a forecast of the night. Fast forward a couple hours later, and we're on their bus with a few other couples/singles (I think about 10 people total). I can't remember the names of the two guys who led the tour, but they were very funny and knowledgeable about the lights and Alaska in general. They made the long 2.5 hrs drive to the location fun and entertaining. We got to the viewing location around 11 PM, and were there for about 3 hrs. Unfortunately, the light activity wasn't super active that night, but we still saw something! Totally worth it! And besides the lights, we got to take a lot of cool long exposure photos, which turned out awesome. 10/10 would recommend this company for your Northern Lights tour. Absolutely wonderful and unforgetable experience. Ben was our driver and guide and photographer. When we arrived in Fairbanks April 1, 2025, we were scheduled for a tour that night but it was a snowy, overcast day so Greatland rescheduled us for April 3, for a better chance to see the Northern Lights. And it was beautiful. Ben picked us up at the hotel about 9:30 PM and drove us to a specially carved out Aurora "camp" with a few yurts and a large, raised wooden platform with chairs in the middle of a beautiful Alaskan forest. The yurt was warm and cozy, with hot chocolate and snacks and a pot bellied stove, chairs, and interesting people, but we didn't stay long in the yurt because the lights kept calling us out. Ben took loads of photos. God opened the sky for us and Greatland got us to the right place at the right time and provided everything we needed to completely enjoy the greatest light show in the world. My experience with Greatland Adventures was mediocre at best. I have been on Northern Lights tours in the past where the solar activity was not great, but I still got some awesome, high-quality photos when the aurora did briefly come out. Unfortunately, this is not what I got from my tour with Greatland. While some of the photos came out, most of the photos are blurry, which is extremely disappointing and not what I expect when paying nearly $300 for a tour. I do appreciate that Greatland is willing to stay out late to watch the solar activity, but I would not book another tour with them due to the photo quality. read more

What an amazing experience! Jacob was such a great guide - he was so confident he could get us to see the Aurora and he did! He's so excited about capturing it himself and that excitement transferred to us. To be honest, I really thought our chances were slim to none given the weather. We had 3 days reserved to give us a better chance. The first day they were very honest about it not being a good day. So glad we waited until the next day. I knew that even if we didn't catch it, the stars would be incredible, - which they were. It was a bonus that we caught the Aurora, after midnight, on our anniversary! We booked a private aurora tour with Greatland Adventures in Fairbanks. Communication throughout the process was excellent! We had an epic experience with Mike, our guide. He went out of his way in every measure, including picking all seven of us up at our rather remote cabin. He used scientific data and Birkeland-like knowledge on our aurora chase, often times pulling over to analyze data & look at the skies to decide which direction had the highest probability of an aurora. After talking with fellow travelers who booked other tours that only went to one viewing spot & never saw an aurora (cloudy weather is a bummer!) we were especially appreciative of the effort. We were lucky that everything lined up and we found more than one viewing spot. We saw arcs, bands, corona & rays - even some dancing lights! Four of us booked three separate winter activities and it did not disappoint! We did the Northern Lights Tour - Steve & Sean picked us up from our AirBnb, along with other groups, in a spacious van stocked with snacks and water and extra winter gear in case we needed it. They drove us about an hour away from Anchorage to see the lights. We waited for the sky to clear up in a tent with heaters and seats and booze! They took pictures of us in front of the lights - pics came out amazing. The next activity we booked was a Dog Sledding Tour - we opted to drive to Happy Trails Kennel, about an hour and a half away from Anchorage. It was a nice drive through a small city that had a lot of restaurants. At Happy Trails, we learned about dog mushing and got to ride with the dogs for about 5 miles even through lakes! They provide extra winter gear as well. It was such a fun experience!! Last activity we booked was the Glacial Tour. Bruce, our tour guide, picked us up in the same van at about 7:45am, drove an hour away to Palmer so we can use the restrooms and stretch, then headed to the park entrance. Bruce made sure we were warm with mittens, boots, and hats. The glacial tour is my favorite because we hiked on the glacier and Bruce was so knowledgeable, I really learned a lot from this day! We were able to go through canyons and caves and took a shitload of pictures. After the hike, he took us to a cute restaurant overlooking the mountains. We ordered food which is paid for. The food, especially the salmon sandwich, was so delicious! All in all, I highly recommend using this company for any winter activities. I will probably be back during the summertime and book more tours with them. read more
