Then walked over from the Marriott under ten minutes to the Mushing District where the Iditarod starts. We were early. Instructed to return at 9:45am when boarding begins. Our first stop was Ship Creek next to the Ulu knife factory. Ship Creek is known for salmon fishing. None present when we were there. We popped into the ulu knife factory for a quick visit. We'd purchased an ulu knife years back at the same store. Then it was off to various points of interest including a stop at Earthquake Park. Site of a devastating earthquake in 1964. The other highlight was a visit to the neighborhood of Turnagain to admire all the seaplanes. The deluxe tour was a great way to get an overview of Anchorage.

Prince was our tour guide and he was casual, knowledgeable and made history interesting!! Not only did he tell us all about important places, but he let us out to explore. We visited the ULU factory, the Captain Cook memorial, Earthquake Park, and a beautiful overlook where we saw the Chugach Mountains, Talkeetna Mountains and Denali (in the distance). Prince knew interesting stories and historical facts. We are tour directors here for the season and we learned a lot from him!

Alaska Coastal Wildlife and Brown Bears…read more I did this tour in August 2023. It is a photography-centric tour and it lived up to the hype. We had bears. Lots of bears. Bear cubs. Carl Donohue was our Expedition Leader and did a great job. It was great to have someone with tons of bear experience, as it was close sometimes! It was a boat-based tour so that we would have the freedom to move to where the bears are. Day one we had bears. Day two we had weather, lots of weather. We were in Alaska after all. From there on out we were in bear heaven. I shot literally thousands of images (shooting at 30 frames per second will do that) and I really struggled to delete down to the 400 or so that I'm at now. It's tough to delete amazing photos because you have some that are even more amazing and you just don't need them all. The boat (yacht?) at 98 feet was super comfortable for our small group of photographers. The crew was awesome and the food was very good, certainly more than you would expect for a boat-based trip. I can't imagine how good you have to be at planning to pull that off. Every day I took "shot of a lifetime" photos of bears.

The first was the Bald Eagles in Haines in November 2022. Recently, in April 2023, I went on the Hungry Whales trip in Sitka, photographing bubble-net feeding whales. In both cases the awesome photo opportunities far exceeded my expectations. If you're looking for creature comforts go on an Alaska Cruise. If you are a dedicated photographer, seeking unique photos, stick with Carl. He does his best to connect you with the subjects and help you capture those stunning shots you seek. If other opportunities arise, such as eagles feeding on fish in the whale tour, you'll get those as well. I strongly recommend Expeditions Alaska for your photo needs in this beautiful state.

I think it was well worth the $25 price since $2 would go toward the hike parking. Plus Peter provides some additional stops toward and from the hike, such as the public library and zoo. I also loved the fun facts he gave us about the history of the Anchorage. He was so nice to lend me some hiking boots (which saved my butt) since I brought only jogging shoes. Last but not least, since all of the passengers were on the way between the hike and his business, he took some time out to drop each of us off at our accommodations. Even if you can't make it to the shuttle, go support Peter please at his other business: Downtown Bicycle Rentals!

The trip was the perfect medicine to unplug me from an over-scheduled, over-programmed, and highly electronic career for a solid week. It pushed me mentally and physically, but never did I feel unsafe. I returned to work in a better frame of mind and with my whole body in a state of "a good kind of sore". Hats off to Don, and our guides (Sandra and Roz) who really made the stay wonderful. And, I never expected to be complimenting the camp food, but it was AWESOME!!! Sandra's breakfast burrito could be on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives! I am already thinking about coming up with a new itinerary for 2016 and going back to the Exposure Alaska crew for another week of killer Alaska wild.

I've travelled to all seven continents and have been on many adventure tours and treks over the years that have left me disappointed and wanting more, but this trip was definitely a trip to remember. As the name suggests, it is an extreme adventure trip that will push you physically and in some places mentally, especially since we had quite a bit of rain, and towards the end, some rain and sleet and a lot of wind, but if you're willing, it will be a trip you will not forget. Sandra (guide) and Roz (intern) picked me up from my hotel right on time along with the other members of the group before heading off to 3 days, 2 nights of sea kayaking. Through out our trip, we went white water rafting, hiking and ice climbing on the Matanuska Glacier, zip lining, and 2 days, 1 night of hiking along a mountain ridge line (I believe approximately 4600 ft at the peak) and back out through the valley. My group had 5 people, 1 guide (Sandra) and 1 intern (Roz) with group sizes maxing out at 6 people. As some of the other reviewers had mentioned, the guides were on the younger side (all relative of course, depending on your own age), however I didn't feel that they were inexperienced at all. Both Sandra and Roz had great energy and knowledge and never once did I feel that they didn't know what they were doing. They knew when and how to encourage each of us to get the most out of our adventure. The food definitely surprised me, as many nights we were in the wilderness, but you will certainly not feel like you're roughing it with the amount and quality of food. Without giving away any surprises, which there are at least one or two, the food is definitely top notch for this type of adventure trip. On our 6th day, we had an Alaskan style BBQ where Don, the owner came to join us. Leading up to the trip, Don replied to each and every one of my questions and concerns promptly, but for him as the owner to actually take the time to come out to meet our group and have dinner with us, chat and share stories showed us true Alaskan hospitality and definitely a sign of a great business owner. There are so many other highlights and people that made the trip great, from John Brown with Chugach Outdoor Center (white water rafting guide), Noah, who co lead the ice hike and ice climbing with Sandra, Ellie with her baked scones and cinnamon rolls, Mandy cooking the amazing Alaskan BBQ, and the Honey Bee Latte made by (forgot her name, but it was amazing). I would definitely recommend Exposure Alaska and their adventure tours for your trip to Alaska. It's a terrific way to experience the real Alaska and challenge yourself both physically and mentally and build friendships and experiences that you will carry with you for a lifetime. I will definitely be reaching out to Don and Exposure Alaska the next time I decide to head back to Alaska.

Davis was extremely prepared when we met him for our adventure. We had binoculars, ponchos, water, and snacks waiting for us when we got in the truck! As we headed out from Anchorage, he took us to several stunning photo spots and shared fascinating facts and history about all the areas we visited, as well as places we drove past. He was friendly and attentive but also gave us space to explore on our own. Even though it both snowed and then rained during our tour, Davis had many different destinations he was able to swap in place of some of our originally planned outdoor activities. The rain stopped just in time that he was still able to cook for us, and OH MY was it delicious!!

While visiting Alaska, we rode the Alaska Railroad several times. The hype was over following the…read morefirst ride. We rode as gold star ticket holders. This allowed us, as tourists, to sit in the 2-story forward car with the scenic panoramic windows. Along the entire route, each time, we had a hostess that incessantly repeated herself! While this may be her job, eventually passengers began to hear, 'whah whah whah whah whah whah (imagine Charlie Brown!) So tired of hearing 'chug chug chug or chuck your adult beverage' each time we stopped to load/unload people or 'the train doesn't leave people, people leave the train (to stretch their legs or take a smoke break!' Breakfast was provided for our first ride! Half of our car's passengers were directed to a separate dining car down stairs of our 2-story car. We were given a choice of 4 options for breakfast (as well as 4 different choices for lunch when lunch was served.) None of the choices received overwhelming applause from the passengers. It seems as though we all just muddled through in order to have SOMETHING in our bellies! Our first two rides were part of tours in which we were to see several types of wild animals. Between the two rides, we saw a plethora of beluga whales, several trumpet swans, dahl sheep, 2 osprey, several juvenile eagles, a few salmon, and a single moose. We've heard about the earthquake of 1964 and the pickled trees it left behind too many times to count! While the railroad is a unique way to get around, I feel once is definitely enough to experience the landscapes of inland Alaska. The mountains, rivers, and other terrain covered by the Alaskan railway really aren't different enough from one another to warrant additional trips. The train station & gift shop was more interesting than my successive excursions on the actual train. The cautionary safety speech followed by the 'ALL ABOARD' call was entertaining. The children's toys & books, postcards, ornaments, and other knick knacks/collectables in the gift shop drew large crowds before the train left the station, as well!

The group all seemed to know each other and the tour guide, so I felt like the odd one out. The training for the Segway was good and I felt I picked it up pretty well. We were doing fine for the first half, speeding down the road, watching seaplanes land, hearing stories of small craft aviation in Alaska. It was actually quite enjoyable and I was having a good time. Until we crossed the road to go over a grassy dip. The guide told us to power through it, but it was like going down the black diamond slope on your first time skiing. I tried to power through but didn't handle it correctly coming up the other side of the dip and ended up falling off hard. I recovered and got back on it, but a little while later, more grass to go over, I overcompensated and fell off. Then, a lip on an incline and I overcompensated and fell off. That's when I was done. My confidence was shot. What they don't tell you about Segways: your feet will hurt, a lot, from the vibrations and you can't exactly keep shifting them. You're at the mercy of the guide stopping to give you a break. Your feet and legs may also go numb after long periods of standing on the vibrating machine. These both make it harder to engage your upper leg and glute muscles to make fine adjustments to your balance. All this combined with unfamiliarity with how to navigate uneven surfaces makes it very hazardous for first-time users. And of course, after three falls, I was in more pain and feeling like a massive embarrassment in front of this group I felt I intruded on. It started as a fun adventure, but far too advanced for someone new. I wish we could have stayed on a flatter path and taken more frequent breaks. As an FYI for new folks: there's no easy way to bail off a Segway if you feel you're going to fall. If you fall, you'll fall hard. It's not like just falling over in snow. Segway Tours were very nice and their tour guide was very knowledgable, but this type of Segway riding may not be for everyone.
