I worked directly with Darren, who was incredibly responsive despite my hundreds of questions. I called Alan Smith Pools over 2 1/2 weeks ago to schedule an inspection and receive a quote. They came out promptly and completed the inspection, but that's where the service ended. Since then, I have called four separate times over the past two weeks trying to get the quote. Initially, I was told to leave a voicemail for the person who handled the inspection. He never returned my call. After I complained, I was finally able to speak with him directly. He told me he had accidentally sent the quote to the wrong email address and assured me he would resend it by the end of the day. Once again, nothing was sent. I called back today to express my frustration, and the receptionist assured me she would get the quote sent over. Yet again, I received nothing. This company has shown a complete lack of communication, follow-through, and respect for a potential customer's time. If they can't provide a simple quote after multiple follow-ups, I have serious concerns about how they handle actual projects. Customer satisfaction clearly does not seem to be a priority. I left a previous 5 Star review, so you are probably expecting me to talk about the same things. Great work, great service, blah blah blah. Those things occurred but they continue to do things other do not. In particular, they will care more about your project than you will! I had them jack hammer out a 2X2 square in my pool deck to fix a plumbing leak installed by another General Contractor (see review on Snyder and Assocaites) . I thought it the job was perfect and they were able to match the patch so well. THEY came to me as they were not happy with it even though I was. It wasn't "perfect". They jackhammered it out and did it over to make it perfect to their higher standards and not mine. One thing people don't usually look at is the demolition crew. These guys were so careful and left zero mess! They did such a good job, and because of them, I asked Alan Smith to do more work. Instead of taking my money, they explained some risks and advised me to hold off. This is integrity and truly looking out for the customer and not their revenue. This small repair made us want to do more and it turned into a large re-tile job on a deck which also turned out awesome. These people are not just workers, they are all craftsmen, down to the demo crew. I was made aware that they will be doing home standby generators and are a Generac Dealer, as they can save customers a lot of money on the install as they often have the ground open and they have in house plumbers and electricians. I would not recommend Alan Smith pools. It has been 9 months since they started my pool REMODEL. There has been nothing but delays, excuses, and change orders for more money from the company. My BBQ is not finished it still needs mason work and there is rebar sticking up out of the top because it still needs to be capped. The BBQ fills with water when it rains because it was built lower than the pavers. My landscape lightening is not working. The rocks that I paid a change order to have fixed and painted have already started to rust. The pool still needs to be chalked and plastered.They are months behind schedule. They will not plaster my pool until I pay another $11,000 on a 200,000+ project but I know if I pay it they won't finish everything that needs to be fixed. Do not hire them!!! It will be a fight every step of the way. They want to be paid before they do the work. So make sure your estimate has line items for everything. Pick out your materials ahead of time because they will give you an estimate with the cheapest material possible and then up charge for decent material. If they do your lightening get a plan with the exact number of lights or else they will up charge you for more. We had them do artificial turf they were going to charge us $5,000 for Geo fabric to go underneath, we bought it ourselves for $500. They were going to install the grass using weed barrier (cutting corners). They don't schedule anything ahead of time so you are constantly waiting with no work being done. Our HOA hired them to replaster our pool - of course that was started in November and they arrived today at 6 AM with all their trucks and crew to plaster the pool - - problem city has rules on times construction can start and its not 6 am. I asked them to wait since our HOA rules say 8 am. They were very dismissive of me so I reached out to the City of Orange Building Supervisor and reported their behavior to him as well as their early illegal start time. The therapeutic spa I had built for my daughter is old and I had spotted some rust. The Alan Smith staff could not have been nicer, more professional or willing to provide options and a timeline for completion that was not only reasonable but was followed. Having a house built in the early 70s many things have had to be replaced, repaired or upgraded. This was the first time a company that I entrusted to take care of the problem actually did what we agreed to without any need for me to worry. ASP did a remodel of our pool 5 years ago. I think they did a really great job of the pool its self. They have been very good about coming back out to do warranty work on the tile and coping. Their crews are very skilled crafts people on the whole. One thing I was not advised about after they sold me on doing a salt water system. The custom concrete coping does not react well to having a lot of salt water splashed on it, it causes pitting. I have had several of the coping stones replaced under warranty, but it is very difficult to get the same color match. Now I am out of warranty and I don't expect this problem to go away. We had them lay pavers on the pool deck and this is really not looking good now. On 2 sides of the pool they are moving around sideways so much and there are visible gaps, These where they are held by anchor edging to a planter at the same level as the pavers. I feel that the edging was possibly not set in cement properly, and I think they should have compressed the road base under the pavers more. I would warn against having them do your pavers. The warranty does not cover this type of problem so you really need them to hold. Overall we are happy with ASP, except for the pavers. read more

Our white pool plaster needed replacing after almost 20 years so we went with Alan Smith Pool Plastering. My Uncle had used them in 2018 and recommended them. He said they did very good work. I'm very happy I went with them as they did a fantastic job. I highly recommend them. They were priced very fair amongst the 6 or so quotes that I got. I was really impressed with all their employees work ethic. They all knew exactly what their tasks were and they completed them excellently. They were like a well oiled machine. I was surprised at all the work that went into removing the old plaster and replacing it. I did keep my old tiles as they were in good shape. They started within a day or two from when I decided to go with them. They kept me well informed via emails about the next days activities. My project manager, CJ, was excellent. He was very knowledgeable and provided great advice on pool chemistry. He would responded quickly when I reached out to him with questions. I'm surprised at the negative reviews. This company has been around a long time and really knows what they're doing. I have a pool that these folks did a tremendous job of fixing a major leak and resurfacing with a pebble coat. That was back in '07/08, and it still looks great. Now I have a bit of trouble getting out of the pool because it was originally built with no railings, so I contacted them about that, and Harriet came out immediately and showed and discussed various alternatives. One of the issues was the relatively small deck area available. Harriet made some recommendations, and I just purchased one yesterday. The leak detection was very thorough, and I was presented with a fair quote to fix the leaks and replaster my 23-year-old pool. Ok, so, this is a review not only for my pool remodel, but for the care I got two years after the fact. When I bought my new home it came with an old fiberglass finished pool that I found out soon after was leaking about 100-200 gallons a day. I patched the gist of the leaks myself with AB putty while I searched for a good place to redo my pool. I looked up and down the board and got lots of quotes and eventually landed on Alan Smith. I went with a pebble plaster, new tile and all new plumbing. But... when we unearthed the fiberglass we found 130 feet of cracks in this old beast, total bummer. Fortunately Alan Smith has a great guy who's been fixing cracked pools since the Nrthridge earthquake when every pool in the southland cracked, he fixed all the cracks and put a ton of concrete in my deep end and made a shell that would stand the test of time, but he warned me that since I live on a hill my pool was prone to cracks, but he did everything he could to strengthen my pool. After all said and done, I basically have a brand new pool. 2 years later a fine crack appeared in the shallow end and I called them right away. They responded immediately and came to check it out. They fixed it perfectly, for a VERY reasonable cost. Honestly, I'm really glad I went with these guys, the customer care was great, they were always straight forward and honest, my pool looks amazing and functions perfectly, I have no complaints. I can not recommend this company. They went months over the time frame we were told. There were some delays due to rain at the time which is understandable, but other than that was delay after delay. Once able to talk to the project manager, he didn't even know there were no workers at our home. The company mis-measured our backyard and ran out of pavers and had to order more....more time. Lastly, we hired an electrician to do some work recently and come to find out Alan Smith NEVER grounded our pool, so pool electrician we just had out fixed that minor issue. Essentially, he said if there had been an electrical issue we could have been electrocuted in that pool at any time since it was not grounded. I'm not surprised at this since the light in our pool never worked once Alan Smith finally finished, and they never corrected it. Awful project management team. 10 days of work prolonged over 2.5 months. When they got their last check, when asked the replaced PM turned around and said they won't fix the light fixture area that got chipped during removal of plaster, which was initially discussed with their sales rep, Matt, and initally assigned PM to the project, John Palmieri. I called my bank, put a stop payment on the check, and I am a "sir" again. Should they have any issues with my comments, there is evidence of text messages to back it up. Awful communication, scheduling, and implementation. I had to call into the office and get into a verbal disagreement with the head of the management team, Ken, to talk about the project schedule. They literally then showed up to finish the job in 2 days. That shows the level of care and management they are capable of providing. I wouldn't hire these PMs to watch paint dry, let alone a title named, project management. The only star they get from me: 1. Actual workers who did the job. Professionals. 2. Post project support team. You would save cost, time, and find professionalism elsewhere with another company. Don't fall for the name and the fluff. read more

The name Alan Smith pool once meant quality but they have jumped the shark. Delay after delay, excuses after excuses does not make for a great experience. The workers keep finding excuses not to do work such as the trucks cannot make it up a hill, their shovels are broken or they cannot find any dirt to use. Alan Smith renovated our pool about 3 years ago, including new tile, replacing a portion of the pool deck, new plaster and new equipment. The quality of the work was outstanding, including a perfect color match of the portion of the pool deck that was replaced (the concrete guy was a real pro). We have had no issues with the pool or equipment until the recent Altadena fire dropped significant ash/contaminants in our pool which stained the plaster. They responded right away by draining the pool and polishing the plaster which not only removed the stains but created a super smooth plaster surface. We also applied the microglass treatment while the pool was drained to extend the life of our pool plaster. My experiences with Alan Smith Pools has been excellent: knowledgeable team, responsive, communicate well via text and phone calls (James Calhoun coordinated much of the communications), and a professional work team (project managed by Darren Laue). I already recommended them to my pool service company (he was amazed at the smoothness of the plaster) and would highly recommend them to my friends and family. We recently had our pool refurbished by Alan Smith Pools and the experience was great. We initially planned just to have the pool resurfaced with one of the new pebble finishes but when they got in and started looking at the tile we realized that it was coming off in many places. Note, our pool is over 35 years old and it was the original tile. 1st - Project management... Tim L, our Project Manager, kept the project going and regularly kept us informed via text, email and phone of the schedule (who, what and when). 2nd - Execution... Mike M, their Tile Manager, was a fantastic resource helping us pick out the tile and design the layout. Mike came by frequently to check on the tile progress and to make sure it all looked as expected. 3rd - Workers... Throughout the entire process they kept the area clean, covered the driveway and patio areas and cleaned up at the end of the day. Unlike workers from other projects there was never any trash left lying around. I do want to call out the tile installers who were amazing. Such craftsmen, getting the tile just right and redoing it if it wasn't exactly how they wanted it, even making sure the tile colors matched. They also found coping bricks that were loose and replaced them, matching the original colors. In the end we have a beautiful 'new' pool and can't wait to use it this summer! read more

Out of the blue and almost a year and a 1/2 later, I get contacted by Alan Smith Pools. They offered to come back and fix the issues that weren't resolved when the project was originally finished. Allen Smith Pool Company did exactly what they said they would do, that is to remove all the old plaster from the pool down to the gunight remove old pool light and old drain at bottom, chipped of all the old tiles around the perimeter without damaging any of the coping, removed all the old plaster, light, drain, and tiles left the whole area clean for the plaster team. When the plaster team arrived they had a clean area to work with. The plaster team installed a new light and drain then re plastered, they did a wonderful job.
