First off...read the reviews of everyone else and you'll see a pattern. Great work all around. Their is one bad review for response time for a quote (from Irvine) and one unsatisfied customer in LB. No one is perfect and I am sure that holds true for Alan. But consistently, Alan gets great review. MY experience was awesome. I reached out to Alan about 1 1/2 years ago. Told him I would like a quote. He came out..talked me through everything, surveyed the yard and came back with a quote quickly. I then ran into a financial situation and couldn't do the job. Alan waited 3-4 months and called me to check on me. No pressure...just seeing how I was doing. Eventually, my finances cleared and I was ready. Alan gave me a computer design and it looked awesome. We agreed on a start date and away wen went. Alan and his guys started the job on time. Alan always kept me in the loop and I never felt like he was ignoring me. The same guys showed up every day (consistency) and Alan was very involved. Alan fixed a BUNCH of stuff in my front yard that was not even in my contract. And DIDN'T charge me for it. He replaced a few plants that didn't make it when planted...for free. He revamped my irrigation system at a reduced price. Yes...I spent over $30K on the job...but he didn't nickel and dime me and really treated me well. But here is the most important thing..Alan listens. He is NICE. He is patient. He is responsive. He is calm. My dog escaped one day and Alan IMMEDIATELY called me and we found our dog. He didn't have to do that. I am currently going through a hard time with another contractor and I called Alan up and asked him for advice. He ALWAYS answers...or calls back....or texts. In this world of shady contractors and HORRIBLE landscapers (here's looking at you SGV), Alan is awesome. Trust him with your job. You will not regret it. Oh...and my re-design is beautiful. Just like the computer design. And I have more work on the way with Alan. Fire pit...outdoor kitchen. And no one else will be doing it except Alan. Alan Dunn is the best landscaper / hardscaper / designer out there. We have a very small patio space that we wanted to turn into an extension of our living room. After searching high and low for reliable landscapers who also had a design sense and would bother to call back over a small project, we went with Alan. As a designer myself, it was very important we went with someone who would pay attention to the details and bring new ideas to the table. Alan does that and more. He makes you as much a part of the process as you want to be. With our project probably being on the smaller side of his average budgets, we never once felt like we weren't the #1 clients. He took all the time to ensure we were in love with every aspect of our yard. We loved everything he did and feel it has added immense value to our small home, not to mention the insane compliments we get over it. So this is way overdue. I hired Alan to do our backyard (which was completed last year), but wanted to do it in two phases. Our backyard was bland and ugly and wanted something with more hardscape and less maintenance (and just not lawn everywhere!). I wanted something easy to maintain with little need for water. Design: I really like the original design that Alan developed. He convinced me to install the lighting which really adds a nice touch. He was great to in developing the two phase approach. First phase included destruction, concrete work, and pergola construction. Second phase included lighting, BBQ island construction, planting, irrigation system. Plants: Knowing what I know now, I would ask for plants and trees that aren't super thorny. It sounds ridiculous, but I hate pruning the thorny rose bushes and thorny trees - and I couldn't even tell you the name of them! But since I left it to Alan's judgment, I can't complain. It's just something that I will request when I redo the front yard. We had fake lawn installed - which I LOOOOVE and look forward to installing this in the front yard. Schedule: I would rate this about a 4 stars. We had a lapse where no work was completed and it was obviously not finished. But once communicated to Alan, the work was completed. Again it's construction, so I'm usually amazed if construction is completed on time or early. He was one of the designers I contacted that was interested in working with me. I did contact others, but either they didn't respond or I felt that the person/company didn't have enough experience to really create the backyard that I wanted. From start to finish we had an exceptional experience with Patti and Alan. We had a long and painful ordeal having our back yard landscaped by another company so when we decided that we wanted our front yard to look nice and give our home some curb appeal, we met with numerous companies to see who would be the right fit. Like many reviewers here, I also found him to be unprofessional and unresponsive. I called for an estimate and was also told by the receptionist that my information would be passed along to him. Finally, after several days, he contacted us. We made an appointment for his to come out to give an estimate. He barely spent any time surveying our yard- no measurements, no written notes. Then he said he would get back to us with a quote. A quote was never received and we no longer heard from him. Nothing!!! What a waste of my time! Beware, he may waste your time too. read more

In the phone call, the lady took my name, number and general questions. She then said she will forward this to Alan so he can get back to me. She did ask for a budget and I gave her a number. 1 week later, still no phone call from them. My husband and I have been trying to find the right plants for our yard for a very long time. We were tired of planting and ripping out due to a) the wrong plants overgrown etc. or b) they wouldn't survive in the spot we planted them in. We decided to bring in an expert who could help us plant the right plants the first time. We called Alan. It may have taken longer to get a reply than we would have liked, but once we started with Alan, we were impressed by the thought process behind his work. We were a little skeptical with his plant choices in the beginning, but we gave him the opportunity to do his thing. Sometimes in this business, there are somewhat flakey people who don't show up etc. Alan returned my phone call right away and was very responsive to giving me a quick quote. We interviewed a number of landscapers, but Alan responded to us with such obvious experience, knowledge, and professionalism that he became the clear choice, and, frankly, we could not have made a better decision. We gave him a vague picture of what we wanted as far as totally relandscaping our area, and we now have a stunning backyard. Every day when I went out to see what work had been done, I was surprised and delighted by the little touches, not to mention the beauty of the work. His work crew is so nice, punctual, clean, and absolutely meticulous in their work so that the smallest details were carefully attended to, and even areas that I never thought of or requested were worked on. One day I looked out the window and saw the men trimming the neighbor's bush that hangs over into our yard; that certainly was never discussed, but I think they wanted to do everything possible to create a perfect look. And Alan is an incredibly nice man, who was excellent about communicating what was going on each step of the way; he was willing to do anything to achieve satisfied clients, and I will say this - we could not be any happier. We hired Alan Dunn to do some hardscape/landscape work in the back yard. Our yard was in desperate need of help, and they certainly came to the rescue. Now, we absolutely love our yard, and have since spent every weekend outside enjoying it with our friends. Patti was great to work with, overseeing the project. She made sure everything got done to our exact liking, and if it wasn't she was very easy to talk to, and fix whatever issue we may have had. We really appreciated how nice and clean the workers left everything everyday after they were done. They would sweep, hose, and put everything away neatly in a corner until the next day. The only issue was there was a bit of a delay in completing the project. Some of the weeks we only had workers there once or twice that week. He was so honest, timely, and responsive for the entire process that we brought him on to do the routine maintenance of the space. Since his team (who are polite and thorough) was doing such a good job with our unit, the HOA brought them on to design, redo, and maintain the common area for the entire building. I sent a bill of materials and complete work plan to Alan Dunn landscaping to his employee Laurie. Complete measurements,materials desired by name etc. Requesting a proposal for the listed work. Alan contacted me by e-mail a week ago and made an appt to visit my home to review the area to be designed. I told him that I was available on the next Friday after work. Two days before our appt. Alan sent me a e-mail asking to change our appt. from 5pm to 2-3pm because he did not want to drive in traffic at 5pm????? It is only 8miles from his office in Irwindale to Walnut,ca??????? He did not say that he would not come but it is 2 1/2 hours later and he is a No Show!!!!! I called and left a message for the so-called "Big Cahoona" inquiring on where he is????? If he is such a prima Donna about going to apps. Why would I give him a dime to work at my home????? Business must be soooooo good that he can get picky about going 8 miles to an appt!!!! After the initial rough start, and recognizing our role contributing to it, my husband and I decided to give Alan another opportunity . He graciously accepted our project, using the original contract that had been signed by both parties. Once the project began , Alan was very responsive and addressed all concerns we had. His crew removed and replaced our fence and stained it to our satisfaction. The other part of the project consisted of putting in paving stones. There were some things along the way that didn't meet our expectations and whenever we brought those issues up, Alan took care of them to the best of his crew's abilities. I had the privilege of working with Alan Dunn and his team during our Landscape renovation in the summer of 2014. Prior to working with Alan I had about 4- 5 other bids provided by other landscape designers and all the stars kept shining back on to Alan. It's probably important to give you some idea of what I was looking originally which was a small minor upgrade with our BBQ and an extended countertop, I had the vision in mind and started looking into various contractors to see if they can share and appreciate the vision I had. Most of them didn't care to offer an opinion and appeared as if they can all get the job done regardless of what I was expecting. Bids were all over the place but I did not have much confidence with the lower end contractors who were over promising me as I had concerns with a previous contractor who left a bad taste in my mouth on a poor flooring project in my yard. So after meeting with Alan and building confidence with his rapport, I asked him if he would share his vision with me and I knew right then he would earn the business and would create my new outdoor living environment. He his team are very professional and have a very high work ethic. We know that construction unfortunately has many hiccups and surprises, however, Alan and his Team did a phenomenal job in staying on course and addressing any surprise fairly and with confidence. He changed my vision in a positive light and addressed the flaws with my original plan and explained his design and how it would be more entertaining. What was originally a small project now was a brand new entertaining vision, however, he truly designed and brought to life an outdoor living area, Kitchen and entertaining feel that I sincerely enjoy spending time in. During the project we encountered a couple events in which I wanted to alter a design and the process of changing the design was presented very professionally and logically. Know that Alan's team are fully dedicated and employees of his company made the entire process very smooth and really gave me a piece of mind. We must've contacted at least 10 landscapers in the area and in the end what it came down to was communication. Most places didn't ever call us, or made appts and didn't show up, or some even gave us quotes but then didn't return our calls for follow up appts! And the first landscaper we hired decided to change the design completely without telling us until it was too late. That's where Patti at ADLD finally came in. She was so helpful, got back to us right away, and continued communicating with us through the entire process. I can't tell you how invaluable that is! We had our entire front yard landscaped and a little bit in the backyard as well. Everything looks great and professional. Patti sent examples/samples of every plant and material before making the decision to use them which was awesome. I liked being part of the process and having some control over the outcome (completely opposite of our first landscaper). There were a few minor hiccups along the way and although ADLD could get a bit defensive at times, they tried working with us to make it right. One negative is that the contract stated we'd receive change orders for any changes (it was very professional looking), but we did not receive said change orders even though there were several minor changes made (nothing that detracted from the beauty of the project though). Overall we are very happy with the result and would definitely hire ADLD again for our future landscaping projects, and I have already recommended them to friends. Alan's service was good quality but slightly disorganized. Although his crew generally arrived on time, they were unaware of the task at hand. For every phase, we had to explain to the crew what to do. They were competent and the project turned out well, but required supervision from our end. Alan was personally not present for most phases. After completion, a couple issues arose that Alan guaranteed to take care of. He was not very responsive during this time and we had those issues fixed (with extra money) by others. read more

I got a call back the following Tuesday from the receptionist to get info on my budget, size of yard and contact info. Alan and his crew worked on our front and back yard a couple months ago. Since my husband and I can have different opinions on styles when it comes to remodeling/redoing, we let Alan do his thing. The flowers he planted in our front yard are looking so nice! We have an area nearby our pool that had some palm trees that were on their way to damaging our concrete so they removed all of that and planted succulents and a couple palms that will not grow tall, i loved the way this came out! Just like the website explained, he met with us to get an idea of what we wanted, and our budget. He then came up with a plan and an estimate. Alan and his crew just completed a new concrete pool deck and patio project for us. He and his team worked really hard to make it exactly as we wanted. Initially, i just wanted him to concrete over a grass area so we would have more entertaining space next to our pool. He suggested to that we break out the the old concrete surrounding our pool and that he could pour new concrete to tie in the two areas and make it look uniform. We are so glad that we went with his suggestion. It has completely transformed our back yard.All that for a very reasonable price.
