Alan Dunn is the best landscaper / hardscaper / designer out there. We have a very small patio space that we wanted to turn into an extension of our living room. After searching high and low for reliable landscapers who also had a design sense and would bother to call back over a small project, we went with Alan. As a designer myself, it was very important we went with someone who would pay attention to the details and bring new ideas to the table. Alan does that and more. He makes you as much a part of the process as you want to be. With our project probably being on the smaller side of his average budgets, we never once felt like we weren't the #1 clients. He took all the time to ensure we were in love with every aspect of our yard. We loved everything he did and feel it has added immense value to our small home, not to mention the insane compliments we get over it. I will have Alan work on every home I ever live in......hes seriously the best and makes an entire space one you never want to leave. My cat is addicted to his new space. read more

First off...read the reviews of everyone else and you'll see a pattern. Great work all around. Their is one bad review for response time for a quote (from Irvine) and one unsatisfied customer in LB. No one is perfect and I am sure that holds true for Alan. But consistently, Alan gets great review. MY experience was awesome. I reached out to Alan about 1 1/2 years ago. Told him I would like a quote. He came out..talked me through everything, surveyed the yard and came back with a quote quickly. I then ran into a financial situation and couldn't do the job. Alan waited 3-4 months and called me to check on me. No pressure...just seeing how I was doing. Eventually, my finances cleared and I was ready. Alan gave me a computer design and it looked awesome. We agreed on a start date and away wen went. Alan and his guys started the job on time. Alan always kept me in the loop and I never felt like he was ignoring me. The same guys showed up every day (consistency) and Alan was very involved. Alan fixed a BUNCH of stuff in my front yard that was not even in my contract. And DIDN'T charge me for it. He replaced a few plants that didn't make it when planted...for free. He revamped my irrigation system at a reduced price. Yes...I spent over $30K on the job...but he didn't nickel and dime me and really treated me well. But here is the most important thing..Alan listens. He is NICE. He is patient. He is responsive. He is calm. My dog escaped one day and Alan IMMEDIATELY called me and we found our dog. He didn't have to do that. I am currently going through a hard time with another contractor and I called Alan up and asked him for advice. He ALWAYS answers...or calls back....or texts. In this world of shady contractors and HORRIBLE landscapers (here's looking at you SGV), Alan is awesome. Trust him with your job. You will not regret it. Oh...and my re-design is beautiful. Just like the computer design. And I have more work on the way with Alan. Fire pit...outdoor kitchen. And no one else will be doing it except Alan. And I know he'll be there when I am ready. read more

So this is way overdue. I hired Alan to do our backyard (which was completed last year), but wanted to do it in two phases. Our backyard was bland and ugly and wanted something with more hardscape and less maintenance (and just not lawn everywhere!). I wanted something easy to maintain with little need for water. Design: I really like the original design that Alan developed. He convinced me to install the lighting which really adds a nice touch. He was great to in developing the two phase approach. First phase included destruction, concrete work, and pergola construction. Second phase included lighting, BBQ island construction, planting, irrigation system. Plants: Knowing what I know now, I would ask for plants and trees that aren't super thorny. It sounds ridiculous, but I hate pruning the thorny rose bushes and thorny trees - and I couldn't even tell you the name of them! But since I left it to Alan's judgment, I can't complain. It's just something that I will request when I redo the front yard. We had fake lawn installed - which I LOOOOVE and look forward to installing this in the front yard. Schedule: I would rate this about a 4 stars. We had a lapse where no work was completed and it was obviously not finished. But once communicated to Alan, the work was completed. Again it's construction, so I'm usually amazed if construction is completed on time or early. He was one of the designers I contacted that was interested in working with me. I did contact others, but either they didn't respond or I felt that the person/company didn't have enough experience to really create the backyard that I wanted. Overall, I look forward to working with Alan on my front yard. I really enjoy the results of his work! read more

Last Fall, we decided to rework our front and rear yards hoping to conserve water consumption. Not knowing how to start, we accidentally saw Alan's sign in our neighborhood. Wondering if Alan would the best choice for us because we don't have other references other than the Yelps. We took our chance and we met Patti. Our first instinct with Pattie gave us the confidence to go with Alan Dunn Landscape Design group. It was no surprise, the job was completed on time and the yard is looking great. The wrought iron work is outstanding. The landscape team leader is very good and detailed. Pattie and Alan personally monitor the progress daily and alway responsive. We made the right choice! Thank you to the entire Alan Dunn team. read more

From start to finish we had an exceptional experience with Patti and Alan. We had a long and painful ordeal having our back yard landscaped by another company so when we decided that we wanted our front yard to look nice and give our home some curb appeal, we met with numerous companies to see who would be the right fit. We met with Patti and she provided a detailed quote along with a 3D mock-up of their vision for our front yard. This was more than we had received from any other company that we met with and it really sold us because we could see what our future yard would look like. We were given a 5-day timeline for our project and that is exactly what it took. Patti and Alan came to check on the project daily, they were flexible with us, answered all questions and concerns we had and went above and beyond in getting our project done in a timely and professional manner. We could not have asked for a better experience than the one we had with Alan Dunn Landscape Design. Our neighbors have been complimentary of our new front yard and we are proud to now have a beautiful front yard with sprinklers, drip irrigation and lighting. I would recommend this company to anyone looking to beautify their property. read more

Like many reviewers here, I also found him to be unprofessional and unresponsive. I called for an estimate and was also told by the receptionist that my information would be passed along to him. Finally, after several days, he contacted us. We made an appointment for his to come out to give an estimate. He barely spent any time surveying our yard- no measurements, no written notes. Then he said he would get back to us with a quote. A quote was never received and we no longer heard from him. Nothing!!! What a waste of my time! Beware, he may waste your time too. read more

I called and left a message to set up an appointment for a consultation. I received a phone call reply the next day, which is good. In the phone call, the lady took my name, number and general questions. She then said she will forward this to Alan so he can get back to me. She did ask for a budget and I gave her a number. 1 week later, still no phone call from them. As a customer, am I suppose to be the one that is chasing the service provider after getting promised a call back for an appointment? I think not. read more

My husband and I have been trying to find the right plants for our yard for a very long time. We were tired of planting and ripping out due to a) the wrong plants overgrown etc. or b) they wouldn't survive in the spot we planted them in. We decided to bring in an expert who could help us plant the right plants the first time. We called Alan. It may have taken longer to get a reply than we would have liked, but once we started with Alan, we were impressed by the thought process behind his work. We were a little skeptical with his plant choices in the beginning, but we gave him the opportunity to do his thing. We love the look he created for us and look forward to working with him on another phase of our re-landscaping. Alan is a very creative designer and made my front yard beautiful again. The only reason I gave him 4 stars instead of 5 was his time to respond. read more

Alan recently finished our project, a complete overhaul of our backyard and fences. He was professional, honest, thorough, collaborative, and communicative. Alan has good design sense of how the layout should be. Additionally we had specific input on the design, and he took no time to understand what we're going for. Also impressive is that fact that he's still having followups to our project months after completion just to make sure everything's working OK. Highly recommended!! read more

I like to thank Alan and his team for putting the finishing touches on my home we just did. I found Alan's company on Yelp and needed to get some tree and landscaping cut back, plus haul away from a home as we were painting. I was in rush as I had planned to have a wedding party that weekend. Alan not only gave us a great price and complete the work in time but he was able to complete the the new landscaping design for my wife just in time for the big event. I highly recommend Alan and his company I found him to be very trusting, confident and a man of his word. Albert read more

We hired Alan and Patti to have our backyard redone. We always had great communication with his wife Patti. Their team were very professional and really had no issues with them. Their were some delays but it all worked out. The design for our backyard was exactly what we wanted. The placement of the outdoor kitchen, fire pit and spa was perfect. The landscape design was good with drip irrigation in place. We are very happy and satisfied with the work they did. They are down to earth good, trustworthy people. read more

I would highly recommend this company. Sometimes in this business, there are somewhat flakey people who don't show up etc. Alan returned my phone call right away and was very responsive to giving me a quick quote. He was at our property within two hours, and the quote was very reasonable!! I also asked him if he could take something to the dump for me, not really thinking he could do that on such a short notice. He said yes, and gave me another great quote. He runs a smooth company and his communication is perfect, which takes the stress out completely. read more

I found Alan on Yelp and Loved his 5 star ratings. He is a great communicator and does great follow up! I'm planning to use him in the future for my landscaping but also will keep him in mind if we do any renovations in our home! Thank you Alan read more

If you're looking for a top-notch landscape design professional, Alan Dunn is the best I've met. He designed drought-tolerant landscapes for my front and back yards in Claremont, and I was thrilled with the results. He came up with a palette and a mix of plants that was easy to care for while being absolutely gorgeous. I also hired his team to do weekly maintenance, and Victor was amazing. Everything was tended to lovingly, and my neighbors continually complimented me on how good my yard looked. Plus, Alan and his wife Patti are pretty cool people. If I hadn't moved to Texas, I'd be a customer for life. read more

Alan was amazing. Excellent design and project management. We were very happy how the project turned out. On time and on budget.

I was generally unimpressed. He was not good at returning phone calls or emails. I paid him half up front, but when work commenced we were generally unsatisfied with how it was done. We requested that he stop and refund us whatever portion of our initial payment was not used. He did not return any money, nor did he return several phone calls requesting that he discuss it with me. read more

I looked around for a local landscape company to finish our soft scape. It was small project but Patti was always accessible, professional, and responded quickly. The job was started and completed within 3 days which was great. I worked with Patti and she sent me a selection of plants prior to buying, was here regularly to check on the work, place the plants, and get my feedback. Alan also came by to check on project and spoke with my husband as well. I enjoyed their no pressure attitude during the whole process even when I made changes to remove some parts of it. We are happy with the job and would definitely use them again. read more

We interviewed a number of landscapers, but Alan responded to us with such obvious experience, knowledge, and professionalism that he became the clear choice, and, frankly, we could not have made a better decision. We gave him a vague picture of what we wanted as far as totally relandscaping our area, and we now have a stunning backyard. Every day when I went out to see what work had been done, I was surprised and delighted by the little touches, not to mention the beauty of the work. His work crew is so nice, punctual, clean, and absolutely meticulous in their work so that the smallest details were carefully attended to, and even areas that I never thought of or requested were worked on. One day I looked out the window and saw the men trimming the neighbor's bush that hangs over into our yard; that certainly was never discussed, but I think they wanted to do everything possible to create a perfect look. And Alan is an incredibly nice man, who was excellent about communicating what was going on each step of the way; he was willing to do anything to achieve satisfied clients, and I will say this - we could not be any happier. A friend just looked at our backyard and referred to it as a tropical paradise, which is such a transformation from the ordinary, unspectacular backyard that we started with. I guarantee that if we need any work done again - anything at all - we will call Alan. read more

We hired Alan Dunn to do some hardscape/landscape work in the back yard. Our yard was in desperate need of help, and they certainly came to the rescue. Now, we absolutely love our yard, and have since spent every weekend outside enjoying it with our friends. Patti was great to work with, overseeing the project. She made sure everything got done to our exact liking, and if it wasn't she was very easy to talk to, and fix whatever issue we may have had. We really appreciated how nice and clean the workers left everything everyday after they were done. They would sweep, hose, and put everything away neatly in a corner until the next day. The only issue was there was a bit of a delay in completing the project. Some of the weeks we only had workers there once or twice that week. However, we understand we aren't their only project, and such is construction. read more

I highly recommend Alan and his team. Alan designed and redid the outdoor space for our townhouse. He was so honest, timely, and responsive for the entire process that we brought him on to do the routine maintenance of the space. Since his team (who are polite and thorough) was doing such a good job with our unit, the HOA brought them on to design, redo, and maintain the common area for the entire building. I would like to stress that dealing with an HOA is no easy task -- there are many opinions and communication styles -- and through some initial growing pains (which are not the fault of AD and team), Alan and his team sought to ensure everyone was happy while maintaining the upmost professional manner. We'll be moving in a few weeks, but we'll be bringing AD with us to our new home. read more

Alan Dunn Landscaping walked us through the process of turning our backyard from dirt to an area for our family and pets to relax in and enjoy. I called Alan to renovate our front landscaping and was so happy with their work, I asked him to continue into the back yard for a redo there as well. In the process they did a wonderful low maintenance design, cleared and replaced horribly clogged drains and non-functioning sprinklers, and installed some stunning lights and fence work to boot. The final result has my neighbors jealous and the HOA wishing Alan would do the whole neighborhood! During the process, I was in constant communication with the designer, and their crews were friendly and fast. I'm a very picky home owner and really dislike construction work, but I always came home to clean sidewalks, patios and neatly stacked tools... plus wonderful surprises as the work progressed. Everything was well planned and actual construction days were minimal. Follow up included some plant replacements and additional tweaks to watering schedules... But best of all, Alan and team are just good folks, making for a great overall experience. read more

I sent a bill of materials and complete work plan to Alan Dunn landscaping to his employee Laurie. Complete measurements, materials desired by name etc. Requesting a proposal for the listed work. Alan contacted me by e-mail a week ago and made an appt to visit my home to review the area to be designed. I told him that I was available on the next Friday after work. Two days before our appt. Alan sent me a e-mail asking to change our appt. from 5pm to 2-3pm because he did not want to drive in traffic at 5pm????? It is only 8miles from his office in Irwindale to Walnut,ca??????? He did not say that he would not come but it is 2 1/2 hours later and he is a No Show!!!!! I called and left a message for the so-called "Big Cahoona" inquiring on where he is????? If he is such a prima Donna about going to apps. Why would I give him a dime to work at my home????? Business must be soooooo good that he can get picky about going 8 miles to an appt!!!! After the initial rough start, and recognizing our role contributing to it, my husband and I decided to give Alan another opportunity . He graciously accepted our project, using the original contract that had been signed by both parties. Once the project began , Alan was very responsive and addressed all concerns we had. His crew removed and replaced our fence and stained it to our satisfaction. The other part of the project consisted of putting in paving stones. There were some things along the way that didn't meet our expectations and whenever we brought those issues up, Alan took care of them to the best of his crew's abilities. I would give him an A+ in professionalism and responsiveness. read more

I had the privilege of working with Alan Dunn and his team during our Landscape renovation in the summer of 2014. Prior to working with Alan I had about 4- 5 other bids provided by other landscape designers and all the stars kept shining back on to Alan. It's probably important to give you some idea of what I was looking originally which was a small minor upgrade with our BBQ and an extended countertop, I had the vision in mind and started looking into various contractors to see if they can share and appreciate the vision I had. Most of them didn't care to offer an opinion and appeared as if they can all get the job done regardless of what I was expecting. Bids were all over the place but I did not have much confidence with the lower end contractors who were over promising me as I had concerns with a previous contractor who left a bad taste in my mouth on a poor flooring project in my yard. So after meeting with Alan and building confidence with his rapport, I asked him if he would share his vision with me and I knew right then he would earn the business and would create my new outdoor living environment. He his team are very professional and have a very high work ethic. We know that construction unfortunately has many hiccups and surprises, however, Alan and his Team did a phenomenal job in staying on course and addressing any surprise fairly and with confidence. He changed my vision in a positive light and addressed the flaws with my original plan and explained his design and how it would be more entertaining. What was originally a small project now was a brand new entertaining vision, however, he truly designed and brought to life an outdoor living area, Kitchen and entertaining feel that I sincerely enjoy spending time in. During the project we encountered a couple events in which I wanted to alter a design and the process of changing the design was presented very professionally and logically. Know that Alan's team are fully dedicated and employees of his company made the entire process very smooth and really gave me a piece of mind. He would always reply to emails quickly and would monitor the quality of his team on a consistent basis. I highly recommend Alan Dunn. read more

We must've contacted at least 10 landscapers in the area and in the end what it came down to was communication. Most places didn't ever call us, or made appts and didn't show up, or some even gave us quotes but then didn't return our calls for follow up appts! And the first landscaper we hired decided to change the design completely without telling us until it was too late. That's where Patti at ADLD finally came in. She was so helpful, got back to us right away, and continued communicating with us through the entire process. I can't tell you how invaluable that is! We had our entire front yard landscaped and a little bit in the backyard as well. Everything looks great and professional. Patti sent examples/samples of every plant and material before making the decision to use them which was awesome. I liked being part of the process and having some control over the outcome (completely opposite of our first landscaper). There were a few minor hiccups along the way and although ADLD could get a bit defensive at times, they tried working with us to make it right. One negative is that the contract stated we'd receive change orders for any changes (it was very professional looking), but we did not receive said change orders even though there were several minor changes made (nothing that detracted from the beauty of the project though). Overall we are very happy with the result and would definitely hire ADLD again for our future landscaping projects, and I have already recommended them to friends. Best landscapers in the area, hands down. read more

Alan's service was good quality but slightly disorganized. Although his crew generally arrived on time, they were unaware of the task at hand. For every phase, we had to explain to the crew what to do. They were competent and the project turned out well, but required supervision from our end. Alan was personally not present for most phases. After completion, a couple issues arose that Alan guaranteed to take care of. He was not very responsive during this time and we had those issues fixed (with extra money) by others. read more

Very disappointed.. I called on Friday, June 26 to see if I could get information/consultation for a backyard remodel. I got a call back the following Tuesday from the receptionist to get info on my budget, size of yard and contact info. Said she would pass it on to Alan (even though he's the one I initially left my message with) and he would be in contact. It's now Friday--Never heard back. And my budget is $8-10k, so it's not like it's a small job that isn't worth their time. read more

Alan and his crew worked on our front and back yard a couple months ago. Since my husband and I can have different opinions on styles when it comes to remodeling/redoing, we let Alan do his thing. The flowers he planted in our front yard are looking so nice! We have an area nearby our pool that had some palm trees that were on their way to damaging our concrete so they removed all of that and planted succulents and a couple palms that will not grow tall, i loved the way this came out! It goes so well with our pool, very palms springish. Alan was very helpful and always got back to my husband when he called. I really appreciate how he recently contacted us to see if everything was well. Not many people will do this after they've completed a job. Thank you Alan, to you and your team! read more

We recently had Alan Dunn Landscape Design re-landscape our back yard, and we couldn't be happier with the results! Just like the website explained, he met with us to get an idea of what we wanted, and our budget. He then came up with a plan and an estimate. He and his crew showed up on the arranged date and completed the job in the estimated time frame. It was a much more pleasant experience than the hardscape remodel we had done 3 years ago. Alan and his crew just completed a new concrete pool deck and patio project for us. He and his team worked really hard to make it exactly as we wanted. Initially, i just wanted him to concrete over a grass area so we would have more entertaining space next to our pool. He suggested to that we break out the the old concrete surrounding our pool and that he could pour new concrete to tie in the two areas and make it look uniform. We are so glad that we went with his suggestion. It has completely transformed our back yard. All that for a very reasonable price. We would definitely recommend his company and will definitely call him again for any future projects. read more
