Beach right by downtown Long Beach. There are several access points from the main road to take the stairs down to the beach. I was pleasantly surprised with how clean it was. My spouse said a decade ago it was dirty with homeless people everywhere. What I like is there are two completely separate paths for the bikers than for the walkers and joggers. Alamitos Beach is an expansive and wide open beach in Long Beach, CA. Its granular white sand and exquisite view of the ocean makes ideal for laying out a beach towel and enjoying a sunny afternoon- the perfect beach day. In addition, this beach is a GREAT SPOT to play beach volleyball given its massive space and soft sand with exquisite high rise building as backdrop view. However, the one thing I didn't like was the sand was too shallow compared to most beaches. Also, the is Gaucho cafe restaurant just steps away from the beach. And few fruit cart vendors for those who prefer something for the commoners. Public parking and playground are available. Metered parking is available in the lot behind the beach, or at nearby Marina Green Park. Public outdoor shower stall is available. The good: This beach has flat and long sandy stretches and the sand is quite fine. The color is patchy with parts that are darker and parts that aren't. It doesn't seem to be a super popular beach though I think it's very picturesque and nice. There seemed to be some inflatable playground type structures in the water. The palm trees are nice. The bad: There were piles of trash at parts of the beach and some homeless near the park areas. With a toddler, it took a long time to get from the parking area to the water. You have to go down a ramp and then walk pretty far. The interesting: I feel like the mixture of beach and city reminds me of Nha Trang, Vietnam or Miami. I am surprised that this place isn't more popular. I didn't see anyone swimming in the water. read more

Glad I waited to write this review. The first time I walked to this beach, it had been after a storm and it was extremely dirty from both human-created and natural materials...so honestly haven't been back (since Junipero is pretty close by), But Alamitos Beach was surprisingly clean, considering how deep the beach is (it is more than 200 yards of sand from the parking lot to the water line). The parking lot is large, and costs $2 per hour even on sundays and most holidays, and you pay at the pay station by entering your slot number. It's the same set-up at the large Belmont Shores Beach parking lot further west. The sand is a bit rough and not very deep, but didn't notice any glass or shards, so it is definitely being maintained. There were some tents set-up around the sandy areas, but not a lot. It was a holiday, but the crowds were sparse and plenty of space to sit and admire the nature view...and quiet enough to hear the lap of the slight waves crashing into shore. The view is distinctly Long Beach, with the oil rig islands, Queen Mary and Carnival Cruise line ship, and the downtown skyline...I love it. read more

This beach used to be decent before Covid. It was well maintained and clean. I went today and I drove through the parking lot and immediately smelled weed instantly. I see about 4-5 people smoking weed and playing loud music. The new wave of people treat this beach like a park. First off, they need to get rid of the vendors that are selling clothes because those people are the ones smoking weed and bringing all the loud noise. Also, the water is really dirty now and so is the sand areas. It's unfortunate that this beach used to be well maintained and enjoyable.. now it looks like garbage. Our family went to enjoy Alamito's Beach and try out the floating obstacle course. The beach was covered in trash. I thought I would do my part and clean up the area we were sitting in while my littles played in the sand. I found 3 hypodermic needles within 10' of where my children were sitting. We packed up and left. Stopped by the restrooms on our way out. There were homeless individuals at the bathroom who looked strung out/passed out as though they had just been shooting up. This beach is not a safe environment for children. Sad to see the city has such a complete disregard for the environment, the ocean life, and the safety of those who would like to enjoy the beach. read more

The beach is disgusting. The water is black. There was tampons pads, cartridges all over the place.

We didn't go to the actual beach but we enjoyed the playground and the food cafe on the beach. We love riding bikes along the shoreline. I can't speak for swimming at the beach, but it felt safe and parking was relatively cheap. read more

Paid parking until 6:00 pm - free after 6:00 pm (on weekdays - not sure about weekends) Really like coming to this beach since the walking/biking trail runs along it. Alright beach I guess. There's sad, a walk way, a giant blow up fun activity center, and a couple of other things. Idk who thinks this beach is a clean beach. It's pretty nasty considering the other beaches around. Trash everywhere. People hardly if at all ever pick up, especially their sand toys. I like this small beach! Paid Parking lot is close by and you can pay via phone as long as you have the app, Passport, and remember your parking spot number. We came on a Tuesday morning. All the lifeguards had masks on which is great! (I wonder if they are told not to perform CPR during a pandemic?) There were a few people without masks so we kept our masks on as we were walking down to the beach and to the ocean. Over all pretty quiet. In the afternoon, it got a bit busier and we headed home to avoid large gatherings. There are numerous trash cans close by so it's easy to keep the beach clean. As we were walking back to the car some people passed by real close to us, less than a foot. Keep 6 feet away everyone. There's so much space at the beach! read more

I can get to Alamitos Beah through my local access point, so I might be a little biased, but I love this beach. Yes, of course, it could be cleaner. You no doubt with find some trash and debris every now and again on the shore, and of course that could be better. It's also a city beach, and I'm allowing some leeway! Other than that, it's always calm, never too crowded, the shoreline is beautiful, and for a city beach, you can't beat the sunset. There's a beautiful bike trail right alongf the coast, and my boyfriend and I have rode our bikes and skates several times along it with other locals and I always feel such at home. Guess what? Right when I moved here, I came to this beach, and I got in the water just to get my hair wet. CAUSE WHO DOESN'T WANT BEACHY, WAVY HAIR?! And although the lifeguard , (that I met a week before), told me to shuffle cause of stingrays, your boy got stung. It hurt. But I also wasn't shuffling, and I know it was legitimately all my fault (haha). But--another life guard right away came running towards me, told me I got "just grazed" by a sting ray, and sent me to the hut to get some first aid. These life guards took great care of me, put my foot in a bag of hot water and helped relive the pain!! Hahah, I'll never forget how attentive they were, especially for being so young and dealing with a new local. The pain was so sucky and awful, but I felt like I was truly living in SoCal for the first time. Sure this isn't.....Laguna, or Strands, blah blah, but I love my local beach, and I'll defend it til the day I die!! Let's just clean it up a bit! read more

We went for the wibit inflatable playground in July. First off this is meant for very strong swimmers and athletic people. It is very hard to even swim out to the playground and even harder to get back on if you fall off. NOT FOR CHILDREN UNDER 12!! Also there are ZERO bathrooms in over half a mile on the beach! The Long Beach walkway goes right through, coming from Bixby Park to the east and leading to the marina on the west side. Nearby there is a Starbucks and a 7-11 (Ocean & Alamitos). There is a rinsing station and bathroom, and palm trees if you need some shade. If you're a swimmer, watch out; there are no real waves so sometimes the water can get a little grimy. But if you're a regular sunbather this is a great clean and relatively private spot! read more

This was literally the filthiest beach I've ever seen. The city should be ashamed of all the garbage in the water. There were literally needles littering the shoreline. Dangerous and disgusting. Old shoes, clothing, styrofoam, plastic, beer cans, cardboard, medical waste, etc,- trash line was a few feet wide near the edge of the water and garbage was floating in the water. I don't know what kind of disgusting people use this beach regularly. The city needs to clean this up asap. Bummed because I used to come here as a kid and back then it was always clean, and here my kid stepped on a freking needle. Thank god he had his shoes on. We will never be back. Gross. read more

This beach is great for jogging and biking! The actual sandy beach part is filled with glass, needles, and trash. Although the running and biking area is paved and free of clutter. Not making it ideal for children or (personally) swimming but people do still participate in these activities here. The Dog beach/City beach a tiny bit further down seems more family friendly just in the sense of trash and cleanliness. read more

I'm happy to see our tax $ & parking tickets are going towards improving the streets and beautification projects! I've watched this beach get cleaner over the years. Sure, it's still probably one of the most polluted beaches in So. Cal being right next to the largest port in the West Coast, but it's also one of the most scenic, and it's the one I am proud to call home. To the west of the newly paved entrance and metered parking lot, you'll see plenty of volleyball nets set up where international tournaments take place in the summer. Beyond the nets, you'll find all the boats parked in the harbor as well as the Queen Mary & Dome across the channel. To the north, you'll get a beautiful view of the downtown, historic buildings and the Wayland mural on the sports arena. To the east, you'll see the starting point of the new pedestrian/track path parallel to the bike/skate path that runs a few miles to "horny corner" (the peninsula). I guarantee cruising down this path with a bike, rental pedal cruisers, roller skates, or good ol' feet will warm your soul. Enjoy the long stretch of sand to lay out, picnic or build sand castles, but I would avoid going all the way into the water! I hope Mayor Garcia can get the green light to remove the break water so waves can make their way in soon! read more

Relatively decent and safe beach during the day, it's a smaller beach, but has lifeguard, public restroom, harbor, police patrol, and all. No dog allowed here but a nearby dog beach! The sand got some golden flakes in it and we weren't sure what it was. Some families with little kids were here. It was a 95 degree day in October and the beach wasn't even packed. I like this beach for walking and for watching the Long Beach coastline. I haven't gotten into the water and don't feel this water is safe to swim in because it's near the marina with boats and factories. However, the water is nice to look at and relax. It's very calming and there's small waves. This beach has a long walking path called "Shoreline Way". It's a good pathway for running, cycling, walking, or rollerblading. There's no nearby parking structure except for the Pike or by the Aquarium. If you park at the structure then you still have to walk a little longer to get to the beach. There are a few random beach parking lots and metered parking in the street. There is free street parking on Ocean Blvd. on certain days. Overall, it's a good beach for exercise and to enjoy a nice sea breeze. read more

It overlooks the shipping rigs, it looks like a bay because the jetty slows the flow of the water, the water is hardly moving (no waves/tiny waves), large open sand area, a few palm trees. I suppose the positive is if you want to kayak or paddle board this a good place to do it become the water is pretty calm and not much boat activity. read more

I can remember as a kid strapping my fishing pole to my bicycle and heading down there on the weekends. There was always a lot of people out there fishing so you got to meet quite a few interesting people. There used to be a gas station for boats at the end of the place. I can remember when we used to sneak down and climb around the fence and go fishing off the backside of it at night. The great big floodlights would illuminate the water and you could actually even see the fish take the bait. read more
