First and foremost they are lovely people who work at the front desk and smiles from the kitchen too. being welcomed like that made me feel special. Second, the RICE and yes I said rice was a dream! In the last year I've been to two special events at Al Shallal (birthday parties actually) and I wanted to sing their praises as an event space. Now, I will fully admit that it's not the fanciest of rooms. It's fairly basic with windows, tables, etc. Nothing architecturally stunning or interesting, but it's a great blank canvas if you have the energy to fancy it up a bit. The food is fantastic. One event was a sit down family style joint and the other was more of a buffet and both were delicious and varied in their menu. The staff were VERY helpful and sweet. They also have a bar area that is available if you want some booze stuffs too. Since I didn't plan the events I'm not sure if it's something you can get through the restaurant or you bring it yourself. I'm thinking the latter but don't quote me on that. If it's a smaller event there's room for a DJ and some dancing on top of setting up a few tables. One of my friends brought a PA and DJed themselves and it was a total hoot. A super fun dance party to celebrate my friend's 30th. If you're looking for an event space with a lot of ambiance this might not be for you but if you're cool with something low key filled with delicious food and top notch service you might want to give them a shot! read more

I believe Olive Garden stole the theme "When you're here you're family" from dining in this place. Owner Mike and family go out of their way to make you feel welcomed... offering samples of lentil soup while you wait the extra minute on your takeout or conversing with you in a way that you know they care. Makes you feel like family. I don't think there has ever been a time that mike hasn't helped carry a takeout tray to a customer's car. He is always stopping and chatting with the patrons in his restaurant. Grew up with this place and have been dining in since they opened. Nothing has changed, even the hand painted mural on the back wall. Their popularity has allowed them to expand to (and build) the banquet hall next door and although I've never been I always see cars parked outside. Food is delicious and cheap. Fattoush is a family favorite and I compare everyone's almond rice to theirs, the golden standard in my book. And their sandwiches are like 3 dollars... don't even bother calling in an order, you will get a fresh Shawarma (custom ordered) before McDonald's can hand you a fry. And whatever is amiss the very accommodating service can help remediate with a friendly smile. They do a booming carry out business but do beware that the inside may seem a tad outdated, but that just adds to the dining experience and gives the ambiance like you're coming home. read more

I'm glad I happened to be working that night he came in. Because when I went today after work I was treated to a homey light hearted atmosphere and a bright smile. The chicken shawarma is perfect. It's the best shawarma I have had: panini grilled outside for a crunch, loaded with vegetables, tender meat, and plenty of flavor. The chicken and rice soup is also amazing rich broth and packed with assortments, you have to get bread with it to dip in the soup. They are so very friendly and welcoming in here. I have to say it was the most personable service I have had in the area. I felt like they were so happy to have us as their guest. That does put one's meal off to an agreeable start. The food was quite nice too. The garlic sauce is a little different but not at all in a bad way. The hummus is super creamy. Baba is smokilicious. Portions run typical Middle Eastern huge and you will not walk out of here hungry. The chicken rice almond salad was awesome. I loved it. My mom was all over the chicken livers, yep chicken livers sauteed with lemon, garlic and onion. You will have to trust her on that as I am not a good judge. My bite tasted about how I usually feel about chicken livers, which is blech. We were just in such a great mood here. Happy. Everything was done in the nicest manner and so efficiently. The freebie baklava was just a cherry on top. Other restaurants, ones who struggle with service issues, should visit here and take a page out of this place's playbook. I wish I could say the food blew me away, but it was the charming waitress who stole the show. Even the other waitress who informed us it was her first day was very personable. A lot of people ordered take-outs on a Friday night while only one or two tables besides us were dining in. Most seemed to be regulars and everyone was treated like family. The menu is expansive. In addition, there are daily Chef's Specials for $8.50 listed on the wall behind the cashier and take-out stand. When was the last time you had lamb shank with sides at a restaurant for $8.50? Sandwiches are around $3 (seriously?). Also, you can print some coupons off their website to save a few bucks. Our waitress recommended the combination plate for two @$24.95 but I declined because there seemed to be more meat in that combo than I could handle. We ordered: House Maza plate for one ($9.50 for one, $13.50 for two), lentil soup, hummous with chicken shawarama plate that came with rice (or fries) and spinach salad (or soup). Garlic spread: 5 stars. Put it on everything! The waitress gave us more to take home. Crushed lentil soup: 5 stars. Not too thick, just perfect, Spinach salad: 4 stars. Lemony and fresh. Maza plate for one gets 3 stars for the combination of one falafel, one stuffed grape leave, hummous, baba ghanoush and taboulee salad. I could really use less taboulee salad and more than one falafel. Falafel: 4.5 stars. Not dense or overdone. Hummous: 3.5 stars. Baba ghanoush: 3.5 stars. My favorite is the one from Café Agora in Atlanta. Chicken shawarama: 2 stars. Dry. Guava juice: 4 stars. Very dirty / ghetto and poor service - walked into the hall to inspect space as they were setting up for party, there was poop in the toilets and the bathrooms were disgusting. I had to ask to clean before my guests arrived shortly -windows / doors were covered with black garbage bags, plastic plates etc. - there was ONE SERVER for 100 ppl - drinks never got refilled after asking multiple times This place is a few dollars cheaper per person than others but the value is much much worse. 4.5- Mike the manager/owner/guy who greeted us at the door truly made this a memorable experience. My quest for the best Middle Eastern in Dearborn brought my friends and I here. Based on the recommendations of the yelp reviewers, we figured we'd check this place out. AMBIENCE- this place used to be a KFC. You can tell by the shape of the building, and they still have the display counter (though it is filled with desserts and sandwiches in lieu of extra crispy and original recipe chicken). All booths- if you're dining with more than 5, it may be an issue. Besides that, not much decor to speak of. SERVICE- as I mentioned, we were greeted by Mike when we first got there. Mike offered us the best table in the house (as the place was not too busy), and said "this is your usual table, right?" We informed him this was our first time. He was shocked, but took that as a challenge to really knock our socks off. He, and the rest of the staff most certainly did as they were attentive and engaging the whole meal. MENU- the menu was like most middle eastern restaurants in the Dearborn area. Nothing really stood out, but my group and I are seasoned vets, so we pretty much knew what we wanted to get. They had a number of lunch specials, although we were there for dinner, so that didn't really affect us. They do have coupons online for some pretty decent deals ($8.95 for stuffed lamb, $20.95 combo for two with two drinks). FOOD- after we were seated, we were presented with pita bread and some garlic sauce. LOVE garlic sauce! The garlic sauce had a bit more lemon than I would've liked, but still tasty. We then tried some spinach pie. The piece I got was a little burnt, but the rest of my group seemed to enjoy their pieces. Guess that is what I get for getting the last one. We also got a Fattoush salad for the table, as well as some hummus. The dressing on the Fattoush was a bit overpowering, but the hummus was ON POINT. I tried some of my friend's lentil soup, and it had a nice zing to it. Two of my friends ordered mango smoothies, and I gotta say, they were more mango slushies than they were smoothies (that you might have at La Pita, or most other Middle Eastern joints). They claimed they liked it, but I didn't think it was good as other places. As for the main course, my friend and I split the combo for two (which is really enough for 3), which was a good cross section of the food they served. The chicken and meat shwarma were very tasty, and did not have a sour after taste. The kafta was a bit dry, but still good. The beef kabob was dry as well, and though the chicken looked dry, it was juicy and delicious. The real stars of the meal for me were the grape leaves, kibbie, and falafel. The grape leaves did not have a sour after taste, and were excellent. The kibbie and falafel were moist and delicious. My friend got a falafel plate and proclaimed it was the best falafel he has ever had. To finish the meal, Mike gave us some free baklava. Again, I ended up with a less desirable piece (read small), but it was the perfect end to the meal. 2 of the people in my party claimed it to be the best baklava they have ever had. I too enjoyed it, though am still thinking of where it may rank. OVERALL- this may have been our first time there, but it won't be our last. Huge portions, low prices, and great service made this an enjoyable outing. This local favorite is off the beaten path, they have some of the best Mediterranean food in the area. I first started coming here to get the chicken Shawarma sandwich, but now I have become a Plant Based Eater and usually order the Raw juice, Falafel sandwich, Lentil soup, Baklava which is great!
