I was there during the grand opening of the original Al Sanabel in the 1990s. I am good friends with the original owner, Nadeem, and my father also worked for Al Sanabel Restaurant for many years. It was always a great place to eat, and a great hang out for locals. Today, I took my family to eat dinner at Al Sanabel for the first time in many years since change of ownership. The new owners are a Syrian family with high standards. One thing I immediately noticed is that the food is rich and as good if not better than anything I've eaten here throughout the past 25 years. Perfect Arabic breakfast. We got the breakfast spread that came with eggs, cheese, crème and honey, labneh, manaeesh, veggies, tea and pita. There is a bit of Turkish style to it. The staff was pleasant and the restaurant was very clean and nice. This is basically two restaurants in one? I was a bit confused when I walked in but don't worry the menu is large and all encompassing. Also, a lot of the staff speak arabic so that was nice. I wish I could eat here more often. Also when I ordered a soda, the server went to the soda refrigerator and placed the bottle on my table as if I was at a cafeteria, no cup, no ice, no straw nothing as if I was at a 711. This is a restaurant with real dishes, real silverware and actual servers that I feel compelled to leave a tip then there needs to be real glassware not a plastic liquor store bottle. We absolutely love Al Sanabel!! I can't believe we have been coming here for five years!! Whenever we are craving Middle Eastern pizzas we always run to Al Sanabel!! I'm not sure if that's what they are actually called but that's what we call them. We always get their spinach and cheese pizza along with their minced beef pomogranite pizza. Both are our favorites!! And both are absolutely delicious!! They sometimes serve them rolled up so you can eat them like burritos. Each pizza is about four slices so if you are starving I recommend two pizzas per person. You order at the counter and they bring the food to you. They only have canned and bottles drinks which you choose from their fridges and you can grab any before you pay. They recently added a new menu with many new exciting items!! The kafta and the spinach and cheese pizza were new -- and omg it was so good I think next time I'll skip the lahmbiajin and go straight to the kafta instead!! We peeked inside thinking this was only a bakery. Apparently not so. It is more of a restaurant, a slew of small tables, and with a menu featuring an amazing list of Arabic pizzas. Since we were not looking for that kind of food, I really cannot attest to its greatness. But there were a couple of bakery items sitting on a shelf, unwrapped. One was a tray full of what looked like pita bread, only with sesame seeds all over it. I see sesame, I lose my inhibitions. We got 2. Unfortunately, I am glad we only got 2, they were old and tough. Tossed them. The other item on a tray was called a cinnamon roll. Not resembling what I know as a typical cinnamon roll, I of course had to get that too. Again, probably at least a day old and tough, but lighly sweetened and with extraordinary spice. Not just with cinnamon, but I could definitely taste cardamom too. Too bad it was so hard. I could have liked this a lot if it were fresh. I ate it anyway, it was good. I wonder. How can you tell when these babies are fresh out of the oven? read more

I came here for a quick lunch with a friend the other day not really expecting much, but oh my goodness I was blown away. I ordered the cheese "pizza" and the falafel. The "pizza" as I'm going to call it was delicious. It was extremely simple, garlicy cheese and parsley on top of fresh baked dough, but it totally hit the spot. As for the falafel, I loved it as well, and I'm not normally a huge fan of falafel. Unlike some places, it wasn't soft, the balls were actually really fresh and crisp. The man working a the front counter was so sweet and answered all my questions and was super patient with me as I changed my order a thousand times, so great service here as well. The only reason I deducted a star is the ambiance and the way the ordering is set up. You go to the front to order- don't pay- sit down -they bring you your food- then you eat and go pay. I ate my food and almost walked out the door before I realized that I hadn't paid yet! Either way, I totally recommend AL Sanabel if you're in the mood for Lebanese food in OC! I love this little Lebanese Bakery! It's right next to my favorite hookah bar, and the food here is just amazing and cheap! They serve these pita pizzas and wraps that range from $1.25-$4.00. The pita is made fresh in their bakery, and it is the perfect amount of fluff and texture. The portions are large, and it is just so wondeful that you can be full off of $5.00. **broke college students should eat here, easy on the budget, and for the most part, it's healthy** I often order the following: 1) Cheese and Zataar 2) Cheese and Veggie with extra mint 3) Baklava 4) Tobouleh salid with a skewer of chicken 5) ANY of their chicken dishes. 6) The chicken and cheese (shredded chicken) They make some of the most AMAZING chicken ever. I don't know how they do it. It is always perfectly juicy and flavorful. It tastes great by itself, but even better with the garlic sauce! I came in looking to try their pizza, and was sadly disappointed with the whole experience. I happened to serendipitously come across this place and noticed the attention surrounding their pizzas, so I decided to step inside and give the place a chance. As soon as the pie came out and I had a slight glance of the food, I knew I was in for a ride. My immediate thoughts after taking that first bite were that the sauce tasted like just like Chef Boyardee, and the dough was slightly undercooked. Anyone with experience eating raw bread dough knows what I'm talking about. The crust was chewy and similar to what you would find in a Lunchables pizza kid. It was like eating pizza from a all-you-can eat buffet - mass-produced-pizza characteristics and quality reflecting what seemed like a conscious effort at an actual pizza, just without the actual "pizza" part... a.k.a. not that good. They said it took ten minutes to make but it tasted more like one minute to me... it's microwaved pizza at best. For $8.99 I might as well have gone to a low-end buffet and pigged out on the pizza there. But it's not to say I didn't enjoy the meal, in fact, I was amused by it. Not only did I get the awful pizza but I had the pleasure of having some abrasive service too. Seriously, the service was almost as dry and lifeless as the pizza. It seemed like the cashier *tried* - and this is being generous - to be helpful, but generally came off as a discontented worker looking to clock and make a sale. I tried asking a couple of questions about the food and pricing, but I was referred to the menu numerous times. This was a small issue, but pretty distinct, nonetheless. If I have a question, I expect at least a simple answer from the server rather than the complete runaround, but I guess we can't all be pleased. Basic knowledge of the menu is all I am looking for and they seem to lack that. When other guests would ask questions, they would get a similar wraparound response. I don't know about you, but saying, "I haven't seen these until today but I would buy them, a whole bunch of them," sounds like a cop out to me, and it was almost like the person was shoving the salesperson-jargon down people's throats (probably still better than the pizza, though, if you ask me). As for my order, I originally wanted to try the vegetarian pie, but with it sitting at $9.99, I opted for the cheaper margarita pizza instead, sitting at a mere dollar less. What I got was a D- effort at what is valued at an A+ pizza, so it's safe to say I am pretty disappointed. The margarita was more like a plain cheese, so I heaven-forbid might as well have spend the extra dollar to get some vegetables on it. As for the restaurant itself, the place has nice arrangement - not cluttered at all, but the table I was sitting at was sticky and dirty. While I was waiting for my order, I noticed more and more guests receive similar service; rude and passive-aggressive, almost like they want people to pay before making a competent and rational decision. I understand the place can get quite busy, but this is SoCal, not New York City... No one is in a rush here unless you absolutely need to be. Regardless, I seemed to enjoy my meal, or at least the humor behind it, but at the price given and the overall experience considered, I would approach this restaurant with caution. Everything seemed overpriced, and it is definitely not worth the time, money, or effort to come out and give the place a try. There are plenty of similar restaurants in the area - even across the street - so don't feel like you absolutely need to try the food here.
