I reached out to Al based on a Reddit recommendation, and the 5-star ratings on Yelp. I feel that I was clear that I was specifically looking to talk with an actual structural engineer. I individually interpreted his responses at several points in our phone conversation to be confirming to me that he was, in fact, a structural engineer. I did not go ahead with the appointment, because he grew evasive when I requested to be able to confirm his licensing status in advance of our meeting (he had agreed to bring his licensing info to the meeting). I finally looked online myself, and to the best of my ability to judge, his engineer license appears to have expired in August, 2002. Please also note that the license for the contracting company listed on this Yelp page appears to also have expired in 2021. We called Al for a structural assessment of our 1960's house that we had recently purchased. We had noticed some small cracks around the house and also larger cracks in our driveway and wanted to know if we had settling issues or if our trees were too close and causing issues. Really great and honest guy trying to do the right thing. I called Al in request for a structural inspection as we noticed cracks were forming around certain parts of the house a few months after we had moved in. Previous owners did a bit of cover up to do a quick sale so there was no way our realtor would've known any major issues. Al was available to come within the next day and he uncovered some continuous issues that was something not in code yet in the 1980s (when the home was built), and wasn't a code until 1995! He provided several companies and estimated costs that can be very expensive or just enough to fix for awhile (depending on your budget). Explained history of homes through the decades which was good insight of how homes changed by code. After being bombarded with salesman from almost a dozen foundation repair companies each professing that their product would solve my concrete problems Al showed up and assessed my 1908 foundation. All of them were full of it. I have minor problems with the concrete floor cracking and some concrete padging and water management. He charged a very reasonable fee to perform an onsite inspection and then made a number of recommendations for a slipping pier in our foundation. We recently noticed that our home was settling, so we hired Al to take a look. We were really impressed by his knowledge and his communication skill. He wanted to make sure that we understood how and why he came to his conclusions. He didn't try to upsell us; multiple times, he noted that certain fixes were not needed for safety, and would probably cost too much to be worthwhile. He ultimately only recommended two cheap and easy fixes. We're very happy to know that our home is safe, and we'd hire Al again in a heartbeat. Friendly, Thorough, and Efficient. The only guy you will ever need to assess the structure of your home. I called Al on Thursday because I didn't know at what point I should be concerned about the cracks appearing on our ceiling. He was very friendly and made an appointment to come out Saturday morning. He showed up on time, brought out the famous 360 degree laser, and was extremely thorough on his inspection of the entire home, all while describing to us what he was looking for, what he saw, and the likely causes of the cracks. He also did a thorough inspection of the outside of our home, patio, and porch. Not only was he looking at the foundation, he noticed the types of trees we had and their condition because from that he can tell what type of soil the house is built on and if they brought a lot of dirt in prior to building the home. He used his soil probe to check the depth of the foundation and described the extra steps the builder had taken and also told us the cause of our sinking concrete walkway. After the inspection we got a write-up of everything he did/saw. The visit he made, although nothing was structurally wrong with the house, was well worth it because it gave us confidence in our home/build, and we also feel the minimal fee charged didn't even cover all the knowledge we gained from his visit.
