From start to finish Kay is far and away the best contractor I've worked with. He's always on time, reasonably promises but over delivers on quality and value, and quick to text/call back. He always had great suggestions and guidance throughout the process and the results show. I've already asked him to do more work, and recommend him to every friend who says they're doing anything on their house.

About 30 minutes before they were supposed to arrive, I received a voicemail stating that they don't work on apartments. I was on a work call at the time, so I missed the call. I tried to respond through their chat and by calling, but it went to voicemail. I own a condo, but it seems they consider it too similar to a standard apartment. I requested a paint job, so be sure to own a home or similar properties before reaching out. Very inconvenient and I took time off of work to accommodate them. Update: It seems they arrived at the scheduled time despite having cancelled the appointment. Unfortunately, since I believed the appointment was cancelled, I took a work call and couldn't respond to their last minute changes. I moved my break later in the day to accommodate them but when they canceled and I was given the opportunity to clock out earlier in the day if I continued to work, I did, thus missing their call. However on an upside, they do work on apartments but only through the apartment management. They mistakenly assumed I live in an apartment complex, although I live in a condo, which could have been clarified with a quick Google search of the address or if they reached out and asked not immediately chosen to cancel the appointment. I did specify that this was a condo and not an apartment in the Yelp request. Additionally, it is troubling that the company framed the situation as confusion on my part and criticized me for voicing my concerns publicly, especially after they cancelled the appointment and sent someone out without confirmation.

Cannot recommend Corneliu highly enough! A seemingly minor window leak ended up being a much…read morebigger problem that required some major rehab work including repair of a deck that was very unsafe. While that was an unwelcome surprise, I felt extremely fortunate that Corneliu was the one who discovered and ultimately fixed the problem. This issue was neglected by another contractor who had done siding work previously for me. Corneliu fixed everything the RIGHT WAY at a very fair price and worked as late as 7:30pm, long after the sun had gone down, to ensure everything was done before the next storm rolled in. I'll be hiring Corneliu for a bathroom remodel later this year and anything else that may come up!

We wanted a door installed in the interior of our home. Cornel arrived, measured the space, explained the different styles, asking what we'd like. Then he went to the hardware store himself, took photos of all of the options that fit our criteria, and texted us the options so we could choose, saving me time from having to go to the store myself. He also went above and beyond by offering to fix the opposite side of the door frame, which was ugly before the project started. We didn't even think it was an option to fix that. Cornel installed the door, painted it, and fixed the trim on both sides, on the same day. The final result is absolutely perfect. It's beautiful, and the quality is stellar. We will certainly be using Smart Construction again in the future for home projects that we can't do ourselves.

I reached out to Al based on a Reddit recommendation, and the 5-star ratings on Yelp…read more I feel that I was clear that I was specifically looking to talk with an actual structural engineer. I individually interpreted his responses at several points in our phone conversation to be confirming to me that he was, in fact, a structural engineer. I did not go ahead with the appointment, because he grew evasive when I requested to be able to confirm his licensing status in advance of our meeting (he had agreed to bring his licensing info to the meeting). I finally looked online myself, and to the best of my ability to judge, his engineer license appears to have expired in August, 2002. Please also note that the license for the contracting company listed on this Yelp page appears to also have expired in 2021. (In our phone conversation, he indicated having come out of retirement, and that he was part of a new company. However, I did not receive enough information to independently verify that.)

We liked how they do the work themselves (instead of hiring others) and have high standards for excellence. When we couldn't afford an add-on for the bid, they decided to surprise us by generously throw it in for us free of charge anyway. They are a couple of good Christian guys who actually care about people, care about their work, and care about reflecting God's love. In the past, we have had challenges with contractors cutting corners on quality, taking way longer than expected and continually raising the price. Working with the Gentry's was the opposite of our past horror stories. They finished when they said they would, they ensured it looked excellent and they were totally honest and upfront about the price. I would work with them again in a heartbeat and recommend anyone else to as well!

They were great to work with throughout the entire process, from architectural and engineering plans, permitting, and the actual construction.
