    Tacos
    Camryn K.

The food here is pretty solid! We ordered the chicken along with the esquite with mayo, poblano rice, Mac and cheese, and salad with the jalapeño cilantro, aji, and chipotle crema sauces for takeout. The chicken was super juicy, and the jalapeño cilantro sauce went really well with it. The other sauces were good as well, but I would probably opt to try other sauces instead. The Mac and cheese was solid, and I really liked the esquite. However, the rice was a little disappointing, and I wish it had more flavor. We also ordered three tacos. I thought they were okay, but I would probably just stick to getting the chicken and sides next time. I would definitely come back and try some of the different sides and sauces!

Fried plantains (bottom left) and esquires (bottom right)

I think I may prefer this location of Al Carbon in Charlottesville! Got a handful of small tables for two person seating. They also have outdoor seating in this location. Ordered para papa with esquites and fried plantains for sides w/ Aji sauce. Chicken, as always, was extremely good: soft, tender, juicy, and the meat easily came off the bone. The chicken skin was neither too rubbery nor too crispy. Just right. First time trying esquites, and it wasn't too bad. Good blend of sweet and salty with this premium side. Fried plantains in this location seemed much more "full"? Not as burnt looking. The plantain sauce (which I highly recommend), that comes as extra cost, came in a bigger container too: very good news. I don't know of any other Peruvian styled chicken restaurant in Charlottesville, so this place is definitely worth hitting up. TIP for first timers: I recommend fried plantains, green rice, or Mac & cheese for your sides. These are my top three, I usually get one of these three every time I pay a visit. The Fried Yucca here is also great, eat it before it gets cold!

Para Para-- Half Chicken (dark meat only) with Plantains and Yucca, and Jalapeño Cilantro Sauce

Came here for dinner with a friend. Not the best Peruvian chicken place I've ever had but it's a still a tasty, affordable, and different meal that provides a change of pace from other casual food options in Charlottesville.   I tried the Para Para-- Half Chicken (dark meat only) with Plantains and Yucca, and Jalapeño Cilantro Sauce. I also tried the Taco Same-- Carne Asada with Mac ń Cheese.   The half chicken was really good. I liked that they have the option to order dark meat only. The chicken was prepared well and tasted delicious in the Jalapeño Cilantro Sauce. The plantains were decent but not amazing. I love plantains but I found that the ones in my order were overcooked and chewy. The Yucca was good, but the texture was not as super crispy on the outside and soft on the inside as orders of fried yucca from my favorite places outside of Charlottesville.   The Carne Asada Tacos were good. Simple yet delicious flavors combined with the sauces and lime. The Mac n Cheese was underwhelming. It was refrigerated and overcooked, and I would not order it as a side again considering the other better options such as Yucca and Plantains.   Overall, Al Carbon is a great spot for Peruvian chicken in Charlottesville. It's a great portion for the price. And I'm so glad they opened another location closer to me on 5th Street. I'll definitely come back when I'm craving Peruvian chicken here.

Food is amazing! Flavorful and delicious. Chicken , roast veggies, charro beans, yellow rice, and nopalitos con chorizo. All good stuff.

The first time I came across them was during the Saturday morning Downtown Charlottesville City Market (pre-covid). I've also encountered them at Charlottesville Festival of Cultures (pre-covid) and most recently at the Autumn Nights Thursday Night Market (which ended in October *SAD*).  We ordered the pulled pork sandwich, lomo saltado and tried a few empanadas (the chicken empanada & the beef, egg & olive empanada. Amidst everything eaten, the pulled pork sandwich truly stole the show! The sandwich included a heap of Wandering River Farm pork shoulder with pickled red onions and jalapenos on a light, fluffy bun. The meat wasn't thinly pulled like I'be seen in many American based pulled pork sandwiches, but more broken into small, juicy tenderized bite size morsels, lathered in an amazing creamy spicy sauce and then piled on top of the buns - overflowing onto the platter with a side of fried sweet potatoes. The fried sweet potatoes were also pretty good - they kept their shape and were actually fried in thin circular slices. Unfortunately, by the time we demolished the pulled pork sandwiches, they had lost some of their fresh crunch and thus were a bit softer than expected, but nonetheless the fried sweet potatoes were a good side dish to the sandwich! The lomo saltado was stir fried beef tenderloin with onions and tomatoes, served with a side of papas fritas (hand cut potato fries) and white rice. This dish was prepared on the spot - cooked over an open stove and thus the flavors were super fresh and worth the wait~ The empanadas had thicker, doughier shells (which I really appreciated) and were filled to the brim with meat. Not super spicy but the sauces that came with them really gave the flavor an extra

The Sausage gravy was a white, almost flavorless gravy. You could see bits of sausage in the gravy, but it sure did not taste like anything. It was very underseasoned. I added salt, pepper, and hot sauce to impart some flavor to it. The eggs, corned beef hash, and hashbrowns were cooked properly. The corned beef hash is of the canned variety, but it was crisped up nicely. And the hash browns were crispy. I added a bit of salt and pepper to the eggs and hash browns, and hot sauce on the corned beef hash. If I had not tried the Sausage gravy and biscuits - this would have been a 4 or 5 star review. My server asked me during checkout how everything was. I articulated my experience with the Sausage gravy. Service was good. Paid with Apple Pay. #4CsRestaurant

Although the food actually tasted good the proportions are so atrocious I am giving them 2 stars bc this is just ridiculous. Their burritos are MASSIVE (think old school chipotle) and the sauce on it tastes great. Here are the problems: the amount of rice is criminal. Literally 3/4 of the burrito is JUST rice. Genuinely the food tastes good so they could really scale back a lot on the size and just do a smaller burrito for the same price and just make the proportions make no sense. I don't want to bite into straight rice in a tortilla. The "street corn" was plain corn kernels and the "fajita veggies" were just uncooked bell pepper strips. Not my fav. The platanos black beans rice and chicken all taste good. Another issue is they charge about $4 EXTRA dollars in the burrito for protein. Why not just make the base price inclusive of the meat? Also if I'm paying an extra $4 for meat i expect a decent portion of it since I'm paying for it separately. Again - 3/4 of the burrito was rice and the meat was nowhere to be found. Both burritos had this issue so it was not a one off issue, this is how they're making them. The arepa balls we ordered came with 3. Another ripoff. Food tastes fine but for what you pay for you get 3 billion pounds of rice stuffed into a tortilla with 2 pieces of chicken. The food tastes good but I'm sorry the rice issue is excessive. Would not order from here unless this gets fixed.

We also ordered the Cheese Arepa Balls- hot, gooey and delicious. Again, do not be shy about the dips- I loved the habanero dip to cut through deep fried cheesy goodness. Protip- after ordering here use your leftover Jalapeño dipping sauce for the Momo's at Currylicious. *They provide a traditional but basic tomato dipping sauce
