Revisit after a long absence. Had Takoyaki, volcano ramen and Akeira ramen. Takoyaki was very wet inside. Volcano ramen was good. Akeira ramen was a bit boring. Needs to be served with something to kick it up a notch: sriracha, chili oil, or asian seasoning sauce that can be added as desired. Long wait for the check to leave. Akira Ramen in Gambrills is our convenient Ramen spot. The location is small but I've never been and it was super packed. This location is clean, service is fine, and food is decent. I've definitely had better Ramen, but I look at Akira as the basics of Ramen. I like the beef and pork belly ramen. The shredded beef has a sweetness to it with texture is unique. I always get the spicy paste on the side to add a little more flavor. The appetizers are okay, nothing to rave about. The Crab dumpling is my least favorite so far. The Bruce Roll is pretty good. The menu has a nice variety and its easy to find something whether you're craving something classic or a little more adventurous. The atmosphere is casual and welcoming with a modern asian vibe. Well number one there shrimp tempura always amazing always I don't eat sushi so regular shrimp tempura really great the bowel buns with pork even more amazing but I get mine without the salad or greens just the sauce and the pork and the bow bun what let me tell you something best way to eat in a little bit of sauce just a little bit their apple juice oh my goodness I'm not sure what is in it but it's amazing. The service is great and my order was to go, but I walked in and then I waited and the service was still amazing. The ambience is wonderful because it's intimate and it's not so noisy but when they get their dinner, rush on the weekends cause people are coming out the movie theater next-door yes but the weight is never really a long wait cause they always have a table so but it's so cozy and wonderful and the food is spectacular. This ramen joint had a great variety of ramen soups to choose from, as well as rice bowls and sushi. Decor is spacious and clean. Our waitstaff was very patient and helpful (especially in answering questions about the menu). I ordered the vegetable ramen, perfect choice for a cold day. Soup base had good flavor, noodles were plentiful and perfectly cooked. The toppings included generous amounts of blanched bok choy, marinated shiitake, wood ear mushroom, bean sprouts, red ginger, corn and silken tofu cubes (plus 1 nori square). Even better is that the menu will let the diner know what type of broth (pork, chicken, ect) is being used for the dish. The vegetable ramen used a plant-based broth which we appreciated. read more

Came to Akira for ramen and enjoyed the shrimp tempura ramen I ordered. I got it with veggie broth and had them make it spicy, so I really enjoyed it. They don't serve alcohol by the way, but they allow you to bring in your own drink, which is very interesting. I have visitors in town and we were all craving some Ramen so of course I hit my favorite source, yelp. Found this spot and we immediately headed out. It's in a large shopping area so there's all the stores that you and we didn't have any issue finding a parking space. We arrived on a Saturday evening, Labor Day weekend and were immediately seated. Three words: ONE PAGE MENU! This usually means they only do a few items, but they do them well. In the case of Akira, that could not be more true. Ramen and a few other dishes are done expertly here! I have been hoping for a good ramen joint nearby in Crofton. There are a scattering of local gems in neighboring towns, but you would have to go to Annapolis at minimum before Akira came here. I was so happy! I had tried the location in Columbia just before the pandemic shut everything down, so I was slightly familiar with the brand. Needless to say, I was excited, but as with anything new, cautious at first try. Wow, what a great bowl of ramen though! While you can customize your bowl, their original options are so delicious by themselves, you might never need to craft your own bowl. I'll just leave it at that, whatever you like in your ramen, even just noodles and broth, they have you covered! Beyond the ramen, the rest of the options are equally delightful. My last visit, I tried the katsudon, for instance. This is a panko-breaded fried pork cutlet, with Japanese curry sauce, white rice, and an assortment of pickled veggies. Oh... em... gee. So good! They also recently added a yakitori menu, I want to call it? Basically skewers of grilled meats and veggies. Also, new shumai and... Brussels sprouts? Interesting option! I haven't tried the latter yet, but I've had both shumai (pork & shrimp) and one of the shrimp skewers. All of these options were very good, definitely solid and tasty additions to the menu. Overall: I love a great bowl of ramen at any time of year. Savory, full of umami, filling, complex, yet simple. It's just a lovely dish that always works. Crofton desperately needed a great ramen joint to compliment the other amazing food options out here (like our Vietnamese and Mexican joints). Now we have one. So I have never been to this location. And what I notice that was different is that you could get plain ramen. Excellent for kids who don't like alot of "junk" in there bowls. also good for people like me that seems to be allergic new foods yearly. The server explained to me why the broth looks milky. The location in Columbia told me it was milk. This server here explained to me that what looks milky is actually bone marrow from pork bones. This was very relieving to hear. I appreciated his knowledge and willingness to share the info. I enjoyed a plain bowl of ramen with chicken broth. Loved the fast service but hated the seat I got for dining by myself. It was in the middle of the busy corridor between the kitchen, cash wrap, and bar. The ramen itself was good but not sure why it had a grayish tinge to it. The okonomiyaki was disappointing. I wouldn't recommend as there was hardly any cabbage or seafood. It was mostly all batter, sauce, and mayo making it a soggy mess. I appreciated the fast service but really really really wished the soup was nice and hot. Happy with our new Ramen place addition to the Crofton area! This was my second visit, and the food and service were consistently good. The location is small; service is fast and friendly. Food: Ramen broth is fresh and rich. Spicy ramen is not spicy (I mean to be called a volcano). I expected to feel lava in my mouth and stomach later, but that was not the case; nevertheless, the flavor was on point. Noodles are perfectly al dente, veggies crunchy, egg runny... honestly, delicious ramen. For a short fee, you can add additional toppings. Pork bao was light and flavorful, maybe missing a pickled element (my taste), but the fried chicken appetizer was perfection, crispy and tender. We took a matcha cheesecake home; pricey, in my opinion, but my daughter said it was terrific. In summary, as long as they remain consistently this good, we will be regulars. read more

All items we sampled are pictured: 1. Karaage - fried chicken pieces. They were fried really good! 2. This new location is perfectly placed among all the shops and other restaurants in Waugh Chapel. There aren't many, if any Ramen places in this area so it's nice to see Akira coming to the area. I've been to their other locations and all have had great customer service and the food is delicious. The menu is a little smaller than the other locations, but I believe it is because they recently opened. I almost always order the Karage or Gyoza as an appetizer, this time we ordered both. For my entree, I ordered the volcano ramen. It is spicy but so good! We enjoyed our experience! read more
