I am so extremely lucky that I found AJ Gale Builders! I was looking for a contractor to complete a very unique and challenging task -- a surprise home makeover for a TV show. Not just any home makeover, it also needed to be completed in 5 days and include the build of a 1,000 square foot greenhouse. (I'm a TV show Producer on a major cable network.) After being laughed at and told "no way that's possible!" by a dozen contractors in Denver, I was fortunate enough to come across AJ. Not only was he willing to help me complete the impossible, he was excited by the challenge. Fulfilling the demands of a TV show are never an easy task, but AJ knocked it out of the park! Not only did he and his team complete installation of new floors, a backsplash, crown moulding, painting, and much more in record time, they did it with a friendly demeanor and positive attitude. AJ is personable and was creative during the design/quote phase to help us define the remodel to our bsmt to enclose a bedroom and enlarge a bath. However, the work 3x longer than promised with some days no one showing up at all (no communication of this) and then he disappeared and wouldn't return my calls before the job was done so now I have to find another company to finish!! His guys did not cover our belongings when they drywalled and painted so left a huge mess that took me weeks to clean up. I would NOT recommend AJ Gale Builders since my experience and several previous reviews warn that he is anxious to be paid but disappears before the work is done to move onto his next project. Update: AJ does great work, however he walked off my second job 85% of the way through because I asked him to get in contact with a referral that I had given him and they needed him to come and fix some of the work that he had done. He had been dodging the calls, so I asked him to get in touch with them. Apparently, that set him off the deep end. I had paid in full. He did refund me to get my granite done but left the bar completely unfinished (I had to install the cabinets, bar tile, find a new granite guy, left closet unpainted) Do not pay until the job is done! A.J. Gale had us at hello. He was timely, professional, personable and obviously experienced. We had our deck doubled in size and our nightmarish basement turned into a paradise for family time. He has his own crew and does not subcontract any of the job out. His crew is experienced, hardworking, polite and considerate, and they clean up after themselves. They were always on time, worked hard all day, and A.J. was always around. He checked in daily with us to discuss the next day's plan. He is innovative and creative and always game to do one more extra thing. We could not be happier with our work and he doesn't break the bank. AJ recently built a deck on the back of my house. He was friendly, professional, and did a great job. He was willing to make some changes as we went along and supplied more material than was called for in the contract. He was also willing to allow me to do part of the project myself. We needed a new deck and had been seeing AJ Gale around town and decided to give him a call. Best decision ever! We ended up having to rip down the entire old one and rebuild from scratch because of the rotting frame. He took the time to walk us around and show us why he thought it would be a good idea and he was right. We had the same 2 workers everyday who showed up on-time and put in a full day. It took 5 days to rip off the old deck, and rebuild a new deck and it is beautiful. AJ stood by everything he said and was up front with any additional costs due to our changes of plans. If you want to babysit everything that they do they will probably ask you to back off, but I found that if I didn't like something it was fixed before I even had a chance to say something. They were very prideful of their work and I would call them again next time I have anything I need to have done. read more

We hired AJ Gale Builders to complete a deck for us in March. Due to weather and other delays the project was not completed until May. Upfront, I'll note that AJ knocked $300 off of our $10,500 deck project because we were dissatisfied with the work and, to be fair, he did ultimately offer to fix what we had issues with, but not before he got upset with us for being mad about what he thought were "aesthetic" issues. Yes, these are "aesthetic" problems, but some of the issues are also woodworking / deckbuilding 101. None of the joints line up (mitered incorrectly); the concrete posts poured hold posts that are barely on the concrete because they didn't measure correctly from the get go and the fix for that was to add more (and terrible looking) concrete to surround it; the stair rails split from being drilled improperly; and the wood itself was not quality in that it's bowing, bending, and splitting now. The subs he hired couldn't be bothered to even face the wood so that the markings didn't show. Some of the screws used were clearly not the right size because the wood is pulling up and away from the deck. The top gate won't close. The handrails look terrible and were just slapped on to pass inspection. The grass is now growing through the deck and stairs because nothing was put down initially to prevent the growth. We were told since the deck was covering it, the grass wouldn't grow. I now have to pay to find someone else to come in and correct the work. Because of the delay (project was originally supposed to take two weeks and instead took two months - again weather was one issue, not showing up was another. Sometimes we would get called to say the team wouldn't be out, other times, they just wouldn't show. AJ offered to build an additional fence for us because we had been so patient, and then as the project came to a close indicated that he'd build the fence if we paid for the materials. After seeing the "finish" work on the deck, we opted not to go forward with that. AJ was a nice guy and was fine to deal with, but he was rarely on site. He showed up in the mornings to direct work and was gone. He was most definitely not overseeing the project. I asked specifically about the posts not being centered in the concrete footings (and not just off center, but nearly off the concrete) and was told as long as it was in the concrete it was fine. Well the inspector disagreed, so they had to add more concrete around it and didn't even attempt to make it look reasonable. I have no idea how to even hide it now because it looks so bad. Gravel maybe? His pricing was more than fair and the deck he built was big. If pricing had been a factor with the size of deck, we certainly would have gone with something smaller, but no issues in that regard were communicated to us. Overall from a distance the deck looks great. Close up though, there are a lot of problems and many items that need to be corrected. We hired AJ Gale to finish our basement of our new home. AJ was the only contractor we got a bid from that was truly willing to work with us on the price quote to allow us to stay within our budget. He helped us get the permits privately to cut costs and set up all the needed inspections. AJ would check in with use on the progress each day. He also included some other things in our house like installing two very large light fixtures without charging us additional money. AJs crew was here at 700 am every morning and worked right straight through to 500 pm. They went in and out through the egress windows to the basement and cleaned up all their equipment every evening before leaving. We are very happy with the finished product and have already recommended him to our friends for their home remodeling projects. read more

AJ Gale is unprofessional in every way.... I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND HIM for any construction job,.... big or small. We had to pay other contractors to clean up the mess he left behind, ...from "electrical and HVAC" items to "finish work" that he did on our remodel. Do not believe that his smaller bid will end up being realty. He'll start the job like a champ and then move on when he's gotten the biggest chunk of your money,.... .. lying to you that he can't afford to buy an essential item at Home Depot. He'll say,..."Can you purchase it and I'll take it off your bill at the end",... then be belligerent and disrespectful to you if you dare question him about anything. BEWARE. I would not recommend using this company. AJ up and left in the middle of our bathroom remodel job. We contacted him about leaky sinks that his team installed two weeks ago and still have not heard back from him. The tile work is incomplete and they also left a big chip on our bathtub. He assured us that he would give us the name of a guy to repair the chip and pay for it, but again, he has disappeared and will not return calls or emails. We had to hire a plumber to fix the leaks and found out that the faucets and drains were not connected properly. AJ was supposed to do another bathroom for us initially, but when we got on him because he was supposed to take one week to complete the first bathroom and we were finishing the third week of this unfinished job, he told me to "Get off my back." and he cancelled the other job. That being said, we had paid him up front for the first job that remains incomplete. He did not follow through with purchasing all of the materials needed to finish the job and has been very difficult to deal with when he was in contact with us and was extremely unprofessional. We hired him because he had done some work for us about a year ago and that went well, but now we would not hire him or recommend him to anyone as he is unreliable and unprofessional. read more

This is one of the worst experiences ever. AJ will greet you as the nicest person possible. It's only once he has your money you must worry. Make sure to call Douglas County building permits & speak to Anthony and ask if he has other complaints (yes) and check out Google Reviews and BELIEVE them...this is where I made my mistake. I wanted to save a buck...AJ takes short cuts everywhere resulting in a wobbly and wavy deck. When confronted, he said 'sorry, its the kids I hired.' Yep! He had hired kids barely out of high school to build my deck which is large and 12 feet off the ground and complicated. The same kids broke a window, installed a wrong size stair case, left concrete all over killing parts of my yard, the clean up he promised was terrible. AJ doesn't show up, just his team and they show up half the time. When I asked AJ to repair his mistakes, he yelled and threatened and said don't ever call me again. He also failed to get me a permit. Don't hire this guy unless you're looking for major problems, headaches and a low quality job. AJ himself told me "you get what you pay for." read more

I see AJ at my place of work a lot, and I can honestly say that seeing his face is one of the worst parts of my day. The first time I met him he said something extremely rude to me for no apparent reason. I know many contractors that are humble and respectful, which are two traits that AJ does not possess. He is demanding, immature, and all around rude and unstable. He even comes in with clients and acts VERY unprofessional RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM. I have pondered leaving a review about my experiences with him for a long time, and I think that enough is enough. I do not appreciate the way he treats me or anyone around me. He needs to be a lot more humble and a lot less entitled because his behavior is unacceptable. I know that someone this immature could not possibly be doing good work. And there are plenty of other options for general contractors that will do great work and not act brash and unstable when you don't give them what they want.
