Four days ago, I was returning to Newark from a trip to the Midwest. I was parked off property at a local hotel and needed to take the air train to P4 to catch the shuttle to the hotel 3 miles away. I have done this many times before...however, on this past trip I happened to witness the best of people and the worst! We boarded the train at Terminal B and it went as it normally does to the next stop, Terminal C...as we pulled out to what should have been P4, the train went back to Terminal B! The security guard asked what happened and we told her, there was nothing she could do. Now the crowds are building as we waited for the next train to come in and take us to Terminal C and P4....we waited and waited. The crowd inched it's way closer to where the doors would open....the people on board who were leaving had a difficult time getting off the train because of the crowd blocking the doorway. My daughter and I got on the train hopeful that this time things would work as planned and we would be on our way home. Nope. People smushed in to the train like sardines! No room to move. The last man on was a very large man who yelled, 'I'm getting on this train, so move in!" As he shoved the closing door to allow himself room, we were pushed in tighter! The crowd groaned. The doors to the train closed and we waited to depart. And we waited. And waited. now its getting hot and the look of panic began to be seen on many faces...including my own! Now people start yelling. One woman, obviously distressed, asked if someone would open the door...one man said no because it will delay us all! Someone else complained about how hot it was getting. I begin to sweat and breathe quicker....my heart racing. Claustrophobia settling in! My daughter keeps asking if I am ok...finally, I stopped answering--I couldn't think about it anymore or I would start to scream! Others, beginning to feel the same way, start shouting to onlookers to help and open the door. We decided to hit the emergency switch...four people tried to get the switch to work and could not do it! Frightening! Now, pounding on the glass window and the doors begins, with shouts for help! A repair man arrived...just in time before the carload of people really turned nasty. He opened the door and some people fought to get out. Others would not move out of the way....they were afraid the train would leave without them! The repair man could not get on the train to do what he needed to do because these selfish people would not move! Finally, he shouted at a few to get out of the way so he could try to fix the train. At that, my daughter made her way to the door and politely asked an older woman to please move so her mother could get off the train...she told my daughter she wasn't going anywhere! That she wasn't going to lose her spot on the train! Oh my gosh! It was so disappointing to see how these people reacted! When I finally made my way across the train car and out the door, it was such a feeling of relief...I just wanted to cry! One woman who had been watching me on the train, came up to us and gave me a hug---she said he saw the look of panic on my face and wanted to make sure I was ok...that's more like what I expected...human kindness.
The AirTrain is a great idea...it's a simple concept, however, it has been two similar experiences in the last three months for me. Both times I ended up paying $20 for a cab to drive me the 3 miles to my car...unbelievable!
Get it right, Newark Airport AirTrain! It's not that hard! read more
