A+ for Food, D for Service Came on a Friday lunch to celebrate my husband's birthday and it was not too busy. Generally I find it odd that they seat you, then you go up to order, have to decide on tip in advance (lowest option is 20%), then get normal table service. Told our server in advance it was my husband's birthday, asked if I should order my dessert initially or later. They indicated I should order at the beginning and they would space it out. Food came out quickly and was AMAZING! But throughout the meal, our drinks were empty, servers were scarcely seen (and when they were ran and avoided eye contact, or chatted nonstop with other servers or friends that were visiting). The food came quickly then after 20 minutes of waiting for dessert I had to run down our server to ask. They asked what my order number was (never got one), what I ordered. No recollection even though we had a full conversation and they had at max 2 other tables. They also never once acknowledged that it was my husbands bday (I had asked specifically for a candle in the dessert since I saw one go to another table which they did come with once the dessert they totally forgot about finally came, but still not a 'happy birthday', which just felt odd). I will say they refunded the dessert due forgetting about it, but it was very odd. Overall - hopefully they can improve the service because it really took away from the amazingness of the food. read more

I've heard amazing things about Ahan recently and it did not disappoint! Our server James was super nice and was extremely knowledgeable when it came to the menu and some of the entrees that we ordered. We got the Taro tea which was really yummy but also pretty "heavy" and felt more like a dessert. For appetizers we tried the Chèvre wontons which was a lot different than we were both expecting but was super tasty! We also tried the Galapao which was good but we also felt like some of the flavors clashed in terms of the filling in side the buns. For a meal we split the Kung pao with fried tofu which we both loved so much it was a great dish with fresh vegetables, perfectly crispy tofu and a wonderful sauce. We also got the mango sticky rice and soft serve for dessert. The sticky rice had a vibrant green color which made the dish gorgeous. Overall it was super yummy, the service was great and the atmosphere was so fun! Highly recommend read more

Pork dumplings was slightly crispy and was filled with a juicy and flavorful filling. You could eat it with the soy sauce, but I felt like it was good enough to eat on its own. I got their Thai tea, a classic, and Saa Kehm, which was a mixture between Thai tea and lemonade. The Saa Kehm had a distinct taste that made me want to keep on drinking. The sticky rice that came with the laab was super yummy and a great addition to the laab. The steak was cooked rare, which made the meat chewer than expected. But with the crunch of the lettuce and other veggies, it gave a lot of wonderful textures. The lettuce was sweet and matched the spices of the laab. It is a little bit more on the spicy side, where it gives a kick later on. It was really pretty presentation. I also got the Red curry noodle soup. The soup was very yummy, and it was very creamy and flavorful. I was surprised how much chicken there was, honestly thought there was more chicken than noodle. I loved how thin the noodles were and I felt like they just slid down my throat. I also loved all the added fragrant herbs, it added a nice refreshing aftertaste on the tongue. Overall I loved the atmosphere of the restaurant. It had a bar style ordering where you would go up to the bar and order everything you wanted, and your food and drinks would come out after that. All the waiters and bartenders were super nice which made the food even more tasty! read more

at first that was a little shocked that you had to go up to a a counter to order your food and drink. Once the spring rolls and the main dish arrived (crispy fried chicken over veggies) as well as the beverages. We were absolutely blown away. The food was great. But I don't even want to talk about the food bc it was so outshined by our waiter, Roman. I travel quite a bit and the only other time I have had service so exceptional was at a Michelin star in Denver with tuxedoed waiters who bowed and replied 'as you wish' as they scurried off into the darkness. Roman was the non-pretentious, totally amiable version of this, helping us with extraordinarily rigid dietary constraints with nothing but charm. He made our evenings. read more

Amazing restaurant! I had heard about the restaurant and couldn't wait to check it out. I finally was able to with a friend and can't wait to go back. The concept is great as well. When you arrive, you'll be seated at a table and given some menus when you're ready to order, you can go up to the counter order and then they'll deliver the food to your table. The menu has a lot of great variety of Asian food offering something for everyone. Tried their bee charmer drink, which is a spin off of a bees knees, which is one of my favorite drinks. Their had some fun foam with a Thai twist to it and uses Thai chili infused honey. . I also tried the red curry udon noodles with tofu because it looked like such a great dish to start with. The dish had great spice with some heat. If you aren't a fan of spice I might recommend another option or ask if they can make it more mild. I'm already dreaming of what I'll try next time. Staff are friendly and helpful. We sat inside. It is a little darker decor. They do have outside seating too. read more

So good, no notes. Get the dumplings. Cocktails are cute. Great food for the price. Wish I had room for dessert

We came here for dinner, arrive around 6:20, and decided to get take out then drive to the Tenney park to watch the sunset at 7pm. We wait for our food for about 30 mins, eventually got our food, drove to the park, right at time to catch the sunset! I ordered green curry, really good and delicious. Daughter got the summer roll and a noddle shrimp salad, she say she doesn't like the sweet sauce, but she also love my green curry.. it seems to be a very popular restaurant, during our 30 mins waiting time, we at least saw more than 20 people arrived for dinner. read more

The Red Curry Udon entrée was fantastic! You should definitely get this if you dine here. The spices were amazing. The drunken noodles entrée had kind of a funny taste to it; we think it had too much fish sauce. We arrived around 12:30 PM on a Sunday and put our orders in online with our phones and the food was ready in about 20-30 minutes. We dined on their outdoor patio area. My advice: order in advance online so that you can arrive when your food is ready. read more

Ahan - Red Curry entree was fantastic! - Laotian Near Me - Madison, Wisconsin

Ahan is a must visit when in Madison! They have THE best Thai/Laotian food in town. The food is super flavorful, well presented, and fresh. We had a party of 5 on a Sunday night and had to wait 30 minutes. We got a number of entrees and drinks. We got the red curry udon, green curry, Khao Soi, fried rice, and fried chicken entrees. All of us had differing favorites because you truly can't go wrong with what you order here. We were impressed with the packed flavor and how juicy/well cooked the proteins were. The staff was super nice and checked in on us multiple times, even though it's a "order at the counter" type of place. Their new space can be a little tricky to find since it's a shared space, but I love how large their new space is! I'll definitely be back! read more

Ahan - Laotian Near Me - Madison, Wisconsin

Being in Madison, I expect the Asian community to be small. So in order to cater to the demographic, the food has to stand out to Madison folks. Coming from Chicago, the food scene here is very limited and mediocre. Thai food... it just wasn't the same as the food I can get in other places. I was trying to eat Ahan last year when it was at other location but couldn't that day because of a wedding. So this time, I waited an hour to try Ahan. Interior of the space is great. Ordering system works well for this. The food... was either too salty or had unlisted ingredients. The drunken noodle does not disclose that it contains shellfish. Therefore, my friends had a bite first and then warned me that they can taste shrimp. When we asked one of the workers, they confirmed that it does have some type of shellfish. The plates here are meant to be single serving which was not the best for people looking to do family style/ shared plates. We also ordered the coconut curry which came with one spoon and it was playing cat and mouse to get a server's attention to ask for another spoon. The fried rice balls were so salty.. dipping it in the sauce made it more bearable. The last thing we ordered was the fried rice, which didn't stand out to us at all. We also ordered dessert which we were confused why mango sticky rice came with ice cream and strawberries. It's unusual for Thai cuisine but once again, catered to the demographics. read more

Visited Ahan for the first time for Sunday dinner. The venue had unique decor and live music playing in the back. The venue has limited in house seating and doesn't take reservations. For a party of 2 at around 5:30 pm it took around 15 minutes to be seated (which was very reasonable). I ordered the Lao egg roll for appetizer and it was delicious. The wrapper was light and crispy and the filling was a tasty combination of pork with veggies. For entrees I got the Khao Soi Luang Prabang and Drunken Noodles. The Khao Soi Luang Prabang was so delicious - it was the perfect combination of spice, meat, noodles, and veggies in a rich soupy broth. The Drunken Noodles were a bit too sour for my taste - personally not my favorite dish. Overall, it's a cool spot with a lot of unique dishes, definitely check them out! read more

We've ordered delivery from Ahan on multiple occasions and have yet to be disappointed. Although we've tried a few different items, my go to is the Khao Poon Kathi Dang - incredibly flavorful. My husband loves the Red Curry Udon. Don't be afraid to order outside of your normal comfort zone at Ahan. You won't be disappointed. Special shout out to the kind woman who delivered our food today. Unprompted, she called us as she was walking up to place the food on our porch instead of ringing our door bell, our dog's least favorite thing. read more

My 4 review only belongs to Khao Poon soup. The fact that when I'm craving for it, I can drive an hour 15 minutes to have it. They are good. They come with chix or fried tofu. I had the chix but next time I'll get it plain since I'm not into tofu. Chicken? All their food is chicken so I was chickened out. All the food are designed with cucumber, radish, lettuce under, and I think it's watercress? So if you like veggies, you will not be without. Pork eggrolls-Jumbo that's why it's $10 for 2. It was ok. I've had better. Mok Pa-PASS. This is the first time we've had it and we didn't like it. It was bland, too. Beef Larb-me making sure I told the cashier (where you have to do your ordering) that I do not want it raw. He said "this is not raw Maybe you saw our seasonal?" Yup, it came out RAW. If he thinks "raw" does not mean rare. Dude, it was red. It was not bleeding but it was all red and no brown. I had it go back in the kitchen and cook it. It was salty and no seasonings. It does come with tripe which is a plus. Comes with sticky rice. Papaya Salad-when you are ordering this, please be aware that it's a Platter. It's not gonna come out in a full plate of papaya like others. It comes with pork skin and yes, breaded chix thigh. You are left with an 8 oz bowl of papaya salad w/green beans in the middle of the platter. Comes with sticky rice. Chinese sausage fried rice. Comes with fried egg on top. It was good. Laotian Snack is a platter- Lao Sausage was delicious, Son in law egg my husband loved and beef jerky was not loved as much as the other 2. Thai Iced Tea-I did not like this. I think they use sparkling water maybe? There's an after taste And it just ruined it for me. I've never experienced it made this way. Ok. It's their drinks so more power to them. Summer Rolls-No shrimp here. All veggy. We ate 1 since we tried several dishes. So here's the thing. We spent $160 with only the 2 of us. When we were boxing up the food, the guy took our plates so I asked for a peanut sauce to go since we only ate 1 out of 2 summer rolls. He came back to let us know that it would be $1 to take home I declined it. IF I would have known, I would have taken home the 2 teaspoon of leftover peanut sauce on that saucer to go. It's darker inside the restaurant and they have a bar with couple of bartenders. It is small. I did insist that I get seated in a booth since we were ordering 8 dishes. There was no way we would fit in their 2 seater half booth. Parking is super limited, we found 1 on the side that said "customer parking". We didn't want to use the other stalls since they are either for their employees or for other tenants. I didn't want to get towed. There was street parking. Everything is limited to 2 hours. read more

Wow! What a delicious experience. Ahan and The Bur Oak are attached at the hip. If you've ever gone to for a show, Ahan is the restaurant in the front. The dining area extends into the Bur Oak area when there isn't a show or an event I believe. I loved the plants and they've definitely got a thing going with their decor. First of all the colors! Every dish was a rainbow! And so delicious. We got: Thai iced tea - delicious, got it with coconut milk, very sweet; and great price at 4 dollars Ice coffee - also delicious rich coffee and still very sweet and creamy also only 4 dollars Lao platter - good selection of different meats and pickled veggies; I personally am not the hugest fan of the Lao beef sausage (lowkey just tasted like a brat but I'm not a hater) Praram Long Song Fried Chicken - the peanut sauce was v sweet the chicken so good; great balance with freshness from the bed of veggies that came with Red Curry Udon - great level of spiciness; enough to make your nose run, but not enough to hurt; good tanginess! I would recommend this one. Ube soft serve - not pictured cuz I simply ate it up too fast; definitely novelty in purple colored icecream; it's not crazy ube flavored but more of a light earthy sweetness. It was like 6 dollars tho so not the most worth it (I mean it's soft serve!!) TLDR; highly recommend; crazy flavorful; yummy proteins with a great balance of veg. Taste the rainbow!! read more

Moving here from SoCal, I was a bit worried that there would be a lack of quality Asian food. Thankfully, Ahan didn't disappoint! I love coming here as often as I can to try new dishes (the only thing restraining me is that it can be a bit pricey...). Ahan sits squarely with some of the best in the area but definitely doesn't reign supreme. I've received carryout a few times and had a chance to dine in the other night at their new location (former Eldorado). Definitely a boost up from their previous space but definitely not a fan of their order at the register and take a number. I feel this is not customer friendly as it breaks the dining experience. Want a drink before dinner? Head on up and order and come back to table. Want to order dinner? Go back up and order. Want a dessert? You get the idea. I get it for restaurants that are more cafeteria style or those that are having staffing issues. I saw at least 5 people running food, filling water, etc so staffing doesn't appear to be the issue. Who knows? Paired with gratuity options that max out at 30% (seriously), I am simply not a fan. Foodwise, I have zero complaints. All solid. Are they James Beard award worthy? Nope. But that wouldn't stop me from carryout in the future. read more

Great food, but be prepared for lack of waitering. I love the menu -- its flavors, diversity (vegan & meat & fish, gluten-free, and every other option), and range of Asian foods I knew (Thai, etc.) and new to discover (Laotian). NOTE: the service is very friendly, but you read the menu yourself and then walk up to a counter to place your order. With all the complexity of dishes and cocktails... I would love to have had a waiter that I could consult and get advice on. But with this set up, you read the entire (long menu) on your own... then wait in line (briefly) to order... then I felt the need to order quickly. I really wish I had the chance to ask more about certain dishes. Even how to eat the fish dish I got! (It was unclear what to do with the large uncut cabbage -- is that a garnish? do you cut it up and mix with the fish? Eat one and then the other??). Ordering tips for next time: Mango mule (n/a) was nice. Pisco lychee drink had no lychee flavor, but a lot of tapioca bubbles I wasn't expecting. Special appetizer (taro dumplings with pork) was AMAZING. Summer rolls were fantastic! Mok Pa fish -- I would not order again (for reasons above). Soft serve "chefs special" with chili oil -- okay, but wouldn't repeat. But LOTS more yummy things on the menu to try on a repeat visit! I plan to be back! Ambience: comfy, nicely lit, high ceilings, colorful, modern Asian decor. Very nice. read more

Located in a little corner, it can be a little hard to miss where the driveway is, especially in the dark (speaking from experience lol). I had an order for pick-up that we ordered about 30 minutes ahead of time. There isn't much signage in the parking area, but it's pretty self-explanatory. You call them when you are outside and sometime will come out with your order. I almost drove away with the wrong order because my name showed up a little weird in their online system. Luckily, they caught me in time and the real person's order was parked right next to me! The staff was really good about correcting it right away and we're thoughtful about the situation. I ordered the Drunken Noodles and the Luang Prabang Khao Soi noodle soup. The drunken noodles had nice noodle texture (not too soggy) and good flavor. A little lighter in taste than other drunken noodles I've had around Madison. Overall, it was good, especially with extra chili oil for spicy lovers. The fried tofu with it was a perfect compliment. I really enjoyed the Khao Soi. Takeout was packaged well with soup and noodles separate as well as bean sprouts and jalapenos slices in a separate baggy too. It was a more coconut-y than expected but packed so much flavor! The chicken pieces were tender, broth was so smooth, and the jalapenos were hot! I would order again! read more

I craaaave Ahan's red curry udon. It is so tasty and there isn't anything else quite like it. The noodles in the udon are brilliantly toothsome and the sauce clings to them perfectly. I like it with the chicken but I would have the utmost confidence it would be good with any protein of your choosing. Other go tos are the drunken noodles and the Pho. I personally think Ahan has the best drunken noodles in town as well. They have a variety of egg roll/spring roll items as well and they are all crunchy and tasty! The ambiance is cute and quaint in the front corner of a venue. It is counter ordering where you place your order at a kiosk, they assign you a number, and they'll bring the food to your table when it's ready. Our first time at Ahan we ate at the restaurant and everything was perfectly cooked, hot, and fresh. We have also ordered takeout multiple times from here and it holds up well. I absolutely recommend! read more

Atmosphere (3/5): When I visited the store, there was a performance going on inside the restaurant. Therefore it was difficult to have a conversation with other people due to the noise caused by the concert. If the seats on the outside balcony are available to use, I recommend that you use those spaces. Service (5/5): It's similar to normal restaurants. The level of service is acceptable without feeling insufficient or better. Food (5/5): The temperature and the seasoning of the food was just right. Especially, the taste of the soup was amazing, and I felt that it would be great to eat this menu the day after drinking alcohol. Price: $15 per person (including tips) read more

Wow, this place SLAPS. Location so cute, so unique, just tucked on the otherwise of E Wash, it is definitely an old house converted restaurant and venue! The dining are is small in the front, but when we went they were doing an open house for the venue in the back so we quickly grabbed a seat by the window and some menus. It's a counter service place, but they welcome you to find a seat and parous. If the back area wasn't on display you could also sit there. My friend and I got the spring rolls, Thai iced team, tom yum soup, and the Drunken noodle. YUM. So much flavor, complex notes, great tang and spice. Just loved all of it and the portions are great. I really wanted to love Ahan, as I'd heard such great things but while everything tasted... okay, it was a pretty disappointing meal overall. Everything was a little pricey, and looked SO beautiful & had good texture, but almost no seasoning or flavor. Started with the Khao Tod, deep-fried rice balls, which were pretty darn tasty (and a huge portion) but the list of flavorings & seasonings was in pretty stark contrast to the Khao Tod themselves, which mostly tasted fried & veeeery faintly of red curry, and the dipping sauce tasted just like mayo in a bowl. Still, these were enjoyable. The fried chicken Praram Long Song was where I started to feel very disappointed. The chicken was super-crispy and moist, but had almost no seasoning, just kinda bland. The peanut sauce tasted like peanut & sugar and not much else. SO MUCH sugar, like a peanut syrup. The vegetables had a nice char on them & were in a sweet soy sauce, which was tasty enough... but overall it was sweet on top of sweet on top of sweet, with not much else going on flavor-wise. I also got the Beef Laab, my absolute favorite Lao dish. The meat was high quality, and I loved the textures throughout... the very rare beef and the little bits of tripe were delightful. But it wasn't NEARLY flavorful enough: not spicy, not sour, not herby, not funky with fish sauce, just... like laab if you dialed all the flavors back 8 notches, to make it boring and bland somehow. Someone came to our table to explain how to eat laab with various vegetables & things as wraps, but the suggested cabbage came in thin strips way too small to wrap anything with, and the suggested lettuce was spring mix, which again are small leaves you can't use to wrap anything. The atmosphere was cute, but the music was real loud, and the ordering system was confusing at times. We ordered our meal just fine but then we had heard about Ahan's awesome dessert options but had NO CLUE how to order them. The menu just says "ask for today's dessert" but because there weren't servers, who do we ask? We were checked on at the end of our meal by someone who asked "do you want more water before you go?" which sure didn't seem like an invitation to order dessert... I still don't know how to order it. The bar looked adorable, and the drinks sounded very tasty (I had to go to work afterwards so I couldn't partake). I might go back for snacks & a cocktail? But the meal was quite bland and disappointing, and PRICEY for what you got. Definitely just going to Lao Laan-Xang or Hot & Spicy next time I want Lao foods. read more
