I don't think I have ever seen such a beautiful and great condition (both fairways and greens) on a public course, especially a muni. Kudos to the maintenance team. Big and nice practice facility. Staffs were friendly and professional, including starter. The pace of play is on a slow side because the gap between each group is 8 minutes, I think. Here is my top-5 list of reasons why Aguila Golf Course gets a 5 star rating from me: 1. It is beautifully laid out. I did a little internet research and found that it was designed by a guy named Gary Panks (who passed away in 2024). Panks has a ton of impressive courses on his resume (one of them is at the Wild Horse Casino and I loved playing there, earlier this year). Full disclosure: I'm not sophisticated enough to know the difference between a well designed course and a bad one, but I sure did like this place. It was challenging. Pars did not come easy--*and I was hitting and putting the ball pretty well that day. (I ended the round with 5 pars--and just-missed 4 others. ) Aguila's course lay out was also forgiving when my slice occasionally decided to show up. Twice, I was able to return my ball to play from adjoining fairways and resume a legit hunt for a par despite a "crap!" drive. Basically, the course does not destroy one's confidence, but it will expect you to make good contact with the ball... and you also better be making intelligent choices when it comes to course management. (Water hazards, sand bunkers, undulations on the course, and trees along the way could make things tricky). 2. It is exceptionally well-cared-for. The place was immaculate--not a speck of trash or tree debris to be found. Putting surfaces were smooth and putts rolled true. Tee boxes were lush and well groomed. Apparently, surrounding trees have recently been trimmed, so it felt like I had stepped into a post card. The one trade-off regarding the spotlessness of the grounds is that the maintenance crews were working on numerous holes. I am not distracted by the noise, and hustle and bustle of these crews, but others might want to know that workers will be probably be out there "doing their thang." 3. Pro-shop staff, the snack bar crew, the starter, maintenance workers, and the cart lady were absolute gems. Every staff member that I interacted with definitely gave off a vibe of sincere friendliness, had a level of professionalism that was top-notch, and made the choice to share a dash of caring energy with me. One specific thing that stands out in the area of customer service shared with me by Aguila staff had to do with the fact that I, "Eff-upped" and booked a tee time for Wednesday--but showed up, ready to play, on Thursday. The woman in the pro-shop worked some, "computer magic" and was able to honor the Wednesday booking. (She playfully let me know that I was pretty lucky that she actually could do it-- and I know it! But what a nice touch it was on her part to show empathy for the goof-ball who should have had to pay for another tee time.) 4. GPS guidance in carts. Come'on now! This is a public course! It seriously is as nice as some of the semi-private and upscale places that I have played. (Not that my golf-course body-count is that impressive--but I have played at a few places that were exceptional. Aguila is up there with them.) As if that isn't enough, the practice areas here are amazing, the bathrooms are spotless, the views of the desert are beautiful. 5. Fairways were lush. Yeah, I know this is related to my #2 reason, but as I am now starting to get the fever for playing golf, I am finding that well maintained fairways with the "Goldielocks-zone level of grass (not too high and not too scalped) make play so much more enjoyable. As I struck balls on these links it was almost as if angels began to sing. The course record was never in jeopardy, but I did play at near my best game levels. This place was so much fun, and will be remembered as one of my best-ever experiences in my golf journey, so far. I didn't feel pressured on which one I needed and ended up deciding on an indoor 10 x 10. I've played both their 9 hole and 18 hole course and I must say that this 18 hole course is a really nice layout! It's a somewhat challenging course but they usually do a really good job maintaining the greens and fairways. The 9 hole course is a really fun little course where you can work on your short game. It was my first time golfing here. It's just a 43 minute drive from my home via the back roads. I was pleasantly surprised. The course was in great shape with green fairways and greens. The greens keeper and his team are doing a great job. The greens ran true. They do have cart girls making their rounds. Played this course over 30 times and after today we will never play again. Horrible customer service from the staff especially the old gray hair lady. After we were rushed off the Teebox multiple times when we had time to spare and the group in front of us literally just hit their approach shots to the green. They then had a Marshall follow us on every hole watching our every move. Completely unprofessional. The course has went downhill as of lately. A quick run down: Fairway looked like the rough Greens looked like fairway Reserved a tee time for 9 hole course. Called in to see if I could add a golf cart, if not I would not have came. The person who answered said no problem we are not busy today, we will allow you to rent a golf cart on 9 hole course. When I drove in, the person I spoke to on the phone suddenly was rude and said he got scolded by the manager for committing a golf cart for us. Ok well that's your problem and it's why I called ahead. He said we needed to play the "back 9" Well upon arrival to the first hole #10. A rude old ignorant man smoking a cigar thought he was going to be arrogant and tell me and my son we couldn't play the course today because a league is there laying. I told him he could shove it and were playing I have a tee time etc. He was mad. He called the golf course and complained. Then of course the golf course came and found us and asked us what's going on. I'll admit it. I was hesitant to play here as it was just another "muni" track. Boy was I wrong! My cousin told me that it was the best muni in the valley and he was right! What a great track! Par 4s are a good challenge with the added distance, but I'm sure this is due to fairways being firm and fast in summer. Course was in great shape and well kept. Green complexes are stellar for a municipal track. I would highly recommend playing here! I know that I'll be back for sure! Our family truly enjoyed it! read more

I Went to golf on the 9 hole and it could have been great, but when you have a tee time you can't get in because the line is backed up a half hour, on EVERY HOLE.. Straight up ridiculous and the free replay is a joke as well, just makes the times longer. I'm sorry but very cheap skate type vibe. This review is only for the Par 3 course. There are two holes that are lengthy, 181 and 160 yards. The rest are between 50 and 100 yards. For $7, it is a great course. There are lots of beginners on the course, so plan on taking time or politely asking to play through. I noticed that some of the yardage signs are a bit off (like 20 yards or so) so beware of that. Other than a few holes with bunkers surrounding hte hole, it is not too difficult, which again, makes it great for beginners. read more

I rarely give a 5 star rating but I will now. This course is aesthetically beautiful and gives a very enjoyable golf experience. It is well cared for and maintained. I played it for the first time today in 108 degree weather and was surprised to find the greens very receptive, with a perfect firmness. They were a little slower than I anticipated which fits my game just fine. There are several "rollin hill" type fairways that can force a blind shot to the green. The bunkers are perfectly raked and the sand has enough give to it so you can dig the club face in and not break your wrist. The few employees I had contact with were friendly and polite. I have played all the munis in Phoenix and Aquila is right at the top along with Papago. With a Phoenix card you pay $47 including cart, and a bag of range balls. I've read the three reviews from golfer's. I'm baffled as to why these golfers only rated the course 3-stars. Golf Digest Magazine rates this course one of the top municipal courses in the country - for play and price. The course is gorgeous with views of South Mountain - the largest municipal park in the country (a top 5 hiking destination by National Geographic Magazine). . Golf Digest rates Aguila Golf Course 4 out of 5 stars - the same rating as The Legacy, The Boulders, and the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Wildfire. The course is also a PGA qualifier course and hosts many of the State High School Championship tournaments. Many golfers through out Phoenix travel to this municipal course, not only because of the prestige and challenge but also because it is well-maintained. The Eagle's Nest Cafe offers spectacular views of South Mountain The cafe's food is mediocre - which is unfortunate. I heard that the cafe was going to be outsourced for management so maybe it will improve. I forgot to mention Aguila provides choices -- a 9-hole course (with pull carts for rent) and the 18-hole with golf carts to rent. Great municipal golf course. Other then quit a few of the sand traps being rebuilt this was a very positive experience. The course design is very good in that it lets you make choices. The 2 short par 4's are well thought out. The overall course condition was very good. The greens were fast and true. The driving range and chipping area was good. I will make it back here. I can't comment on the clubhouse or food since I did not go in. If you have not yet played here, you should give it a try. read more

Probably the best municipal course Phoenix has. Guys and gals in and out to the pro shop were super. Greens were punched early June, and I honestly could not tell. Some serious props go to the greens keeper and the grounds crew staff. They put some hard work in keeping quite nice. read more

I had a friendly experience. Paired up with a gentleman from Iowa. He plays this course often and helped me judging the distances. This is a great muni course with a perfect par 3 course when you want to squeeze out a 45 minute round after work with some good company or work on your short game by yourself. Fun moment on the par 3 was the 181 yarder that I decided to use a 3 wood and pretty much flew the course at about 240 (accidentally). I like all of the courses Aguila offers and they have great happy hour prices if you decide to golf after work as said earlier. The parking situation is fine, the service is fine, and they offer everything a golfer could ever need even rental clubs. Aguila, means "Eagle" but unfortunately, I only got 2 birdies! Hey folks. Are you looking for a great bargain on a very playable municiple course? Give Aguila a try. I played middle tees and it was challenging enough for me. Gold tees play 6400+ yards. But the tips are at 7000 + yards. The course is about 25 minutes from downtown Phoenix and after the 202 freeway expansion is built, it will be very accessible to those of us living in the south east valley! In past years, before hip surgery, the clubhouse would give me a handicap flag that allowed me to drive up to the green. But now, I'm very comfortable driving and walking the course. On the down side, I've never played here when the course was empty. Usually, the course is full and sub 4 hour rounds are rare. Another factor is getting a City of Phoenix Golf Card. It pays for itself during peak season and is great for all City of Phoenix golf courses. I highly recommend everyone try this course. I can guarantee you won't be disappointed. read more

The service was horrible, restaurant was not open till 7.00 am, they lost our tee time and had us play stating on the back nine.
