My first time golfing here. I came to golf 18 holes with a party of 3 plus a ride-along on a Sunday. The pace of play was very slow. Pros: - cheap - tee boxes and fairways well kept - friendly staff Cons: - large parking lot however it was full and took a while to find parking (lots of vehicles circling looking for parking) - course is tight with all the holes close together and homes surrounding the course - difficult to find your ball on some of the holes because of all the range balls on it I feel this course overall is good for the price. I just wish the pace of play had not been so slow. read more

I wish they would do something about the homeless man who somehow got ahold of a putter. On the practice green this guy yells "boom" after every putt then proceeds to send it across the entire practice green. He's been there three times this week. I'm sure I'm not the only one who was irritated by this. The worst was when someone asked him which hole he was shooting for, he got extremely confrontational. I also got disrupted on the first tee box from another homeless lady on drugs. Get it together guys. read more

We had heard Encanto was one of the local favorite muni courses, so decided to try it out. The carts look new, as they have integrated bluetooth speakers which I have never seen before. The course itself was very beautiful and was in great playing condition. We were offered a hot deal for $40 on GolfNow and this was an absolute steal for those green fees! The course played decent in length, around 6500 yds. Slope rating is lower than the average course so it will play easier, but it was a fun round if you're out with the guys and having a few brews. Pace of play was a bit slow as we were backed up on several Par 3's, but overall we had a great time and would play it again. Best, Charlie read more

For the cost it was worth it. Walkable golf course if you want it to be. Hard to lose balls here, you just may be on the wrong fairway. Greens were in rough sharp. Lots of mud to drive your cart through. I would come back for sure. read more

Always came here for the range and played the 9 hole executive a few times. Played the 18 and it's a great simple course. Lots of green grass and very good condition, also the restaurant has great food and drinks. Took private lessons with Kurt and saw a noticeable difference in my golfing ability, will be back again. read more

Honestly for the price you can't really beat encanto. It's a great course for golfers of my caliber as the fairways are pretty much wide open. I was actually extremely impressed with how well they up-kept the course. The fairways and greens were in great condition. The views of the city are a pretty sweet addition as well. If you are just starting to play golf or even if you have been playing for a while I feel like this is a great course to play. read more

We are in Phoenix for the winter. Wife and I like to walk golf courses. This is extremely walkable even if the other half of the foursome is riding. On this course go big and you will be rewarded (Use the driver a lot even on the short holes). Bring your own pull cart. The ones here are new but very basic. However, the staff is extremely friendly, helpful, and professional. Cannot say enough good things about them. We will definitely enjoy our winter here. read more

This is a great city course, I have been here many times just to practice on the driving range. Recently I finally had a chance to actually play it. I was surprise at the length this course was. Doesn't seem like it, but it is long. Many trees, and bunkers present is added excitement to a relatively flat course. There are some water hazards that can get you in trouble, and the grass they use for the rough is pretty tough. Overall I had a great time, and definitely will come back again. read more

As state and local governments continue to tighten their belts, public golf courses are becoming ever scarcer here in the valley. Some have sold their operations to private owners while others have shut down and sold off their courses altogether to developers who swoop in (RIP El Caro Golf Course). Good public courses are especially rare in the urban inner city area of the valley, where land values continue to rise alongside the expanding concrete jungles. One of the few public courses that have been a constant in my lifetime is Encanto. There are actually two courses, a 9 hole and an 18 hole. The 18 hole course is the one I've played most often and in fact is the golf course I've played more than any golf course anywhere. Encanto 18 remains as busy as it's ever been with crowds of locals and out-of-towners alike taking to this relatively forgiving Par 70 layout. There's about a dozen driving range stations as well as a full practice putting green and chipping green. There are also a couple of golf pros that provide instruction at this course. The main clubhouse connects to full size locker rooms, restrooms, as well as a café with seating for upwards of 50 people. All year round the course remains busy with out-of-towners joining locals to pack the course during the cooler months, and locals seeking deeply discounted greens fees during the hot summer months. I should know as I've been part of both crowds. This place was also a venue I used often during my high school years when it served as the practice (and sometimes match day) venue for my high school golf team. Both my high school as well as probably a half dozen other high schools used Encanto 18 for practices rounds multiple times a week after school during Fall golf season. Today Encanto 18 is still used by local high school men's and women's teams as their practice and match day venue of choice. During the Summer and early Fall when it's still hot, getting on the course in the afternoon is pretty easy and the sun stays out long enough to easily get in a quick 9 hole round, even if you're starting at 3:30pm like we did. I'm by no means a great golfer, but I'd say my average 18 hole score here is typically in the upper 80s to mid 90s. The wide fairways, relatively flat greens, and pretty forgiving roughs make the course very playable for the average amateur golfer. The lengthy Par 5s, plentiful bunkers, occasional water hazard, and close proximity of the roads and residential neighborhoods are where the real challenges come in. If you have a pull or fade tendency, that can be a little dangerous on holes like the 12th and 13th, where you could easily spray a shot onto Thomas Road or 19th Avenue respectively. You also need to steer clear of the driving range area along the 1st and 9th holes as your ball could easily get lost amongst the numerous range balls. I'm very thankful Encanto 18 is still here. Still public, still affordable, still close by. The course is playable for almost any level, the amenities (while not luxurious by any stretch) are perfectly respectable, and the superintendent does a good job keeping the course in decent shape. During the cooler months, I'd recommend reserving your tee time at least 3-5 days in advance to the get the time you want. During the warmer months, chances are you can get a tee time with no more than 24 hours notice. The food at the café is pretty standard clubhouse grub so nothing special there. But on the whole, Encanto 18 offers a solid value and a centralized location that's accessible to the masses. Great view of the Downtown Phoenix skyline included at no extra charge. Fore! read more

Perfect weather doesn't hurt either (75). Only wish i could shoot the temp lol. I guess I'll have to play again when it's 100+ for that Haha. Also got the grab n go sandwich for the round. City course is one of the first golf courses in Arizona, Wow have things changed with hundreds of courses in the valley. Driving range available with a nice view of the buildings. Played out here today for first time in almost a dozen years. This was my home course in high school and the main things I remember about those days is playing badly and homeless people always asking us for change while we were on the range and putting green. No beggars today, but there were a few harmless people meandering the course, apparently off-track from the park. It's to be expected at Encanto, though. I enjoyed the course today. As others have said, it's a straightforward, flat, no-frills course. It makes for a relaxing round and an easy walk since it's all flat. Except for a couple holes, it's a wide open course so let the driver rip. It's fun to cut the corners on some of the par 4s. There was a steady flow of golfers but it wasn't packed and everyone was relaxed and taking it easy on a Monday spring day. Nobody was rushing around, which was nice. The course is in typical muni shape. Pretty good fairways and tees, the usual irritating mixture of hard-pan and thick crabgrass in the "rough" areas, and the greens were actually above average and rolling very well. All in all, just as I expected. I enjoy the urban setting of the course although others may not. I like the skyline views and I appreciate the charm of some of the old houses along the course. Encanto is what it is. It's cheap and best used as a course for beginners, an easy walking course, or anytime you just want to let it rip and not get beat up by a challenging course. I'll be back more than once every 12 years now that I have the discount card for the Phx munis. Almost forgot about the intangibles: $3 Blue Moons on tap, $1 PBR cans, $2 Corona cans, among other cheap beer specials. Good stuff read more

I went for an early afternoon trip to the driving range. This is the closest one from my hotel. I decided to play after a bucket. The course was in good condition. Forgiving and flat. Not a lot of challenge except for the greens. They are so sloooow. $ typical city course. Lots of public walkers in the course so watch out for errant shots. Played this course for the first time yesterday 1/16/21. I'll start the Pros (no pun intended). The gentleman who was running the check in at the pro shop was top notch! We had a twosome tee time at 2:40 and with how busy they were I feared getting matched up with another twosome. I get so nervous and my game goes to hell in a hand basket when I play with strangers. He said he'd do his best but wasn't likely.. OK. No biggie. Needless say, we stayed a twosome! But...I would have been fine being coupled up, as most of the golfers seemed to be on par with my skill level; you know, shank a ball here and there, whif a swing here and there, absolutely crush an amazing drive here and there, but end up with a 7 anyway because the short game went to shit! Haha that's my style! My husband and I were also pretty impressed with how nicely maintained the course was. And for the price, it want too bad, it was just shy of $100 for the 2 of us to play 18 with a cart. Note: You really don't need a cart, this course is easily walkable. For the cons, this is a BUSY course in all aspects of the word, not just with golfers. There is an Amusement Park on the course, yes you read that right! Fully equipped with Whistle Blowing Train, small Rollercoaster with kids screaming and all! And, the driving range is also right on the course so there are a number of holes where you literally have to run for your life and duck for cover to avoid the rainfall of balls flying at you from all directions. Ok, maybe not quite that epic. But its pretty bad! With that being said, it also makes it difficult to distinguish which ball is yours and which is a range ball. Many range balls out of the course and fairways. Then. There was the constant blaring of sirens. Why so many sitens? Drive bys? Robberies?? Speeders? Haha who knows! Perhaps the constant flow of ambulance traffic from The Children's Hospital? No clue, but its loud and its constant. Oh well. We had a decent, fun time. I can't say I'm in a hurry to come back. We ended up quitting and calling it a day on the 11th hole. The sun was starting to set anyway. I give the 4 stars for the course maintenance and the staff. If you're in the area give it a try and decide for yourself. I live in North Phoenix, not really worth the drive me for. read more

In terms of location, there is the stunning skyline which looks great at the driving range, as well as various historic homes. However, the noise from the amusement park and emergency sirens is obnoxious for a few holes on the front nine. Though nothing can be done about that now, that is not an excuse for how poorly maintained the greens are. Furthermore, using white range balls is a very asinine idea and slows down pacing. You'll find range balls on nearly every hole because of this. Given the quality of the course, the cost is not justifiable. read more

Golf course is very forgiving and in great shape considering its a muni. After summer, you would be thinking that most is dead, and its true, they let the 2nd cut get dry and it makes errant shots forgivable. Thank god, it helped me shoot an 88 :) Greens were in great shape, had 30 putts, a personal best. Chose this course because its the closest to my hotel, and I'm glad I came. Good experience. Great "Muni course"! The greens are kept good, the staff turnover seems frequent and customer service is variable like windspeed. The prices are more than reasonable especially with summer prices. The course has no elevation which is the norm for the Phoenix area. Unless you're a scratch golfer you will find the course challenging. Give her a whirl! read more

Ok. This is a little off course, but I just wanted to say that the old snack bar/restaurant served the BEST greasy cheeseburger EVER!! Cured a hangover in seconds!!. Anyway. The course is flat, fast and fun. Play from the tips for some challenge but the middle tees are enough challenge for me. Not much in the way of hills or trees so great lies all the time. Par 70 so don't get too excited shooting an 85. Hahaha. Overall, Encanto is a good deal. read more

If you're looking for a glamorous 18-hole course with sweeping elevation changes and beautiful fairway and green conditions...you've come to the wrong place. However, this is a fantastic bargain and a great course to shoot a low score or take your first outing on a full-length course. The fairways are dead flat and provide even lies no matter where you end up. The rough is cut, so there is little to no danger of losing a mis-hit ball. The rough is even easy to hit off of. The greens have very little break. There is water on two holes (that I remember) but oddly enough, it's on the left side of the fairways. Since most right-handed golfers slice their shots, this won't be a problem for most people. There are very few bunkers, but the ones that are there should be avoided as the quality of sand is very poor and quite thin. The course is easily walkable and I would reccomend that you do just that. A foursome walking can actually play faster than a foursome on two carts. One of the people in our foursome was a horrnedous golfer. I doubt he had one decent shot in 18 holes. However, the course does not penalize you for bad shots and he actually had a nice time while he didn't hold up the pace of play at all. This made it fun to play with him regardless of his abilities. I think he shot about a 110 which was pretty good for him. At somewhere like Lookout Mountain, I'm sure he would have shot 150 or higher. I paid a measly $34 on a Wednesday to walk 18-holes. The Twilight Rate is a mere $18. The course is certainly worth more than this making it an absolute bargain. read more

Fondly referred to as "Encanto National", this is the little course that could. It's obviously a muni, and until they're a country club and let me know that I'm not allowed to play here anymore without an endorsement-it will remain one of my go-to courses. One of the main reasons it's a must-play is obviously, the price. Ahhh, a great muni-rate indeed. On that note, GolfNow has some ridiculous steals on this course, available year-round. It's as if the city poured all of their marketing budget into this website begging people to play here. But I've played this course in the winter at peak conditions with a cart for less than $30, and with lesser courses like the Biltmore charging triple that during this season, I will take Encanto any day of the week. Keep in mind that for what it may lack from the overall "looks" department, do not be mistaken. It has some challenging par 3's from the tips (3, 5, 11, 14) and outright tough green complexes on these holes. Par is a good score on them. Enjoy your round! read more

Conditions are almost always good here. It's a bit of a hero course because even the 1 handicap isn't terribly difficult. Bunkers are more dirt than sand. Water hazards on front and back nine, but rarely come into play. They just recently reopened the bar here to. I walk the 18 in summer with Phoenix card for $18. read more

I'm an inexperienced golfer. In fact, I have only played 5 full 18-hole rounds of golf, but so far I would have to say this has been one of my favorite courses. I only lost one ball in one of their ponds and nothing went into the bunker. Was it luck? Was it skill? It doesn't matter. Because it all pans out at the 19th hole. ;) Also, I would like to note that we played in mid-July and there were some beautifully scenic photo opportunities with the PHX skyline in the background and quite a few shaded spots for the cart to hang out while we chased down the balls (no, that's not a euphemism for girl's night out). If you are hungry while playing, it looks like you can place an order from your cell phone to Mulligan's snackbar and they'll schlep it out to you at the turn. We may look into that next time. I'll definitely be back, especially since it's quite a bargain. For the two of us, it was about $40 for 18-holes and a cart. read more

It was time for golf again this morning and it's beautiful morning to walk a golf course. When I want to walk the course, I always think about City of Phoenix owned course, because they not only allow walking a course (so many of the resort courses don't allow walking around here), the courses encourage it! Encanto is a nice little golf course...not difficult, pretty flat and roomy for those players that are directionally challenged. It's actually pretty on some holes with the city of Phoenix skyline framing the fairway or the green. The rates are definitely a bargain compared to some of the courses around the area (you will want to sign up for a Phoenix Card if you are Maricopa County resident and plan to play more than 2 rounds of golf a year, because it essentially cuts your green fee in half and pays for itself within a couple of rounds!). It's even more of a bargain, since the city started to put a little dough into maintenance, and it shows in how the course is pretty good shape (I have been out there some years in which there wasn't even a budget for watering the fairways and green...it was like hitting a golf shot from a shaved down scrub brush). They have a nice little putting green and they don't discourage chipping practice on the putting green. the driving range is adequate, as is the little snack bar (an interesting thing in the snack bar is the framed scorecard from the course record at Encanto, shot by Jonathan Kaye, a journeyman touring pro, bunch of years ago...he was like 13 or 14 under par on this course, so it kind of shows how easy Encanto plays). So, not the best course around, but fun to play, especially for the price. read more

JOIN THE MENS CLUB FOR ONLY $100 A YEAR! Best deal ever! They keep you handicap and have great tournaments and events! I moved from California. This course is flat yet challenging with a variety of hazards with long par 3's. The first hole has a BEAUTIFUL lake on the right with ducks swans and fish. There are water hazards and the bunkers are tricky. The greens are always really well kept. A great place to play for beginner and long enough that you will use every club in your bag! It is also very reasonably priced and pace of play is always reasonable under 4 hours. read more

The course is good for a cheap urban round. It's flat and easy, but can make for a slow round (especially on weekends). For the price I pay in the summer (usually around $15.00), it's a fantastic deal. The course is also great for kids that are graduating from executive courses to full length tracks. read more

Terrible golf experience. Waited for over 40 minutes after our tee time to start. Front nine was backed up the entire time. A ranger did show up around the sixth hole to attempt to speed things up but it didn't work. The cart girl made one round for the front nine during our 2 hour and 45 minute time. Even then she turned around before completing the entire course, leaving us without a chance to get a drink. When I attempted to get a refund for the back nine, the employee said no refunds no matter what. He handed me the card for Mike Swartz, the head pro for Phoenix courses. After a couple of left messages, still no return call. Obviously this poorly run course starts at the top. Save your money and find another course to play! read more

This is one of our courses to play always in good shape and very reasonably priced. If I have one complaint it's how slow it can play somedays. On a public course like this you would expect a ranger out there all day making sure that play keeps movie this is not the case. You never know from day todayor should I say how slow play will be here. On whole 13 today one of the players in our group is his second shot and he hit it really good, the ball landed in front of the green about 10 yards off the front of the green then rolled across the green and supposedly hit the foot of one of the players on the green. This was a total accident he never thought he would get that far. Upon our approach to the green to apologize for that they took his ball and threw it out into the fairway and then proceeded to tell us they were going to kick our ass before we even had a chance to apologize. After several verbal attacks we just proceeded to finish the round. At this point they played even slower than that had been when we reach the clubhouse I am assuming the fellow was a manager his name is Terry came out and proceeded to give us hell. I proceeded to tell Terry what had transpired he said he had already heard what happened funny how he was only going to listen to one side of the story I explain to him that there are two sides to every story and he was going to hear our side so I explained it to him. They had neglected to tell Terry that he threatened or insulted us and proceeded to play very very slow the rest of the round as I'm explaining this to Terry one of the guys from the foursome I had of us come running back into the parking lot re-been there already told their story and that was that. At that point I asked Terry is there any more need for me to explain anything, you see his verbal attitude right now shouting and yelling and he Has his finger in my face yelling. that's mild compared to how they were on the golf course.
