I was initially told by the receptionists that they needed my insurance information which was fine, and after being on the phone for approximately 15 minutes they told me just to come in but they still hadn't been able to reach and verify my insurance. At the time the doctor was ready to see me, I told them I would just pay out of pocket so I could be done with it and the doctor diagnosed a conjunctivitis giving a strong antibiotic / steroid ophthalamic solution. I advised almost the entire office that I would be out of town for about the next month and I was told to call with an update after being on the medication for a week. When I returned to california, I contacted the office to schedule a recheck and to advise I wouldn't be able to come in within one business days' notice and asked if the doctor wanted to continue the medication in the meantime because I was out. I was very rudely reminded that I was supposed to call with an update which was shut down immediately when I gave them the exact date and time I called, reminded them that I left a voicemail, and then politely reminded them that absolutely not a single person ever called me back. I then asked why I paid $100 for the consult out of pocket just for them days later to turn around and bill my insurance $250. They insisted they totally planned on giving me a refund but never once told me either in office or over the phone that they were billing my insurance and at the time I was leaving the visit told me I was paying the consult fee out of pocket and that was the end of it. I was shocked when the cost was more than doubled to my insurance without my knowledge or permission and can say very confidently they had no intent on contacting me to refund me for anything. I know this because when I started asking questions, I was put on hold three different times by someone named Monica. Sometimes when I was mid sentence. I liked the doctor, although I do not believe this is a conjunctivitis given the severity of the symptoms and ongoing nature of the symptoms, but unfortunately the receptionist's lack of communication and failure to notify the doctor that I called with an update resulted in me terminating my care at this location. They seemed to care more about the money, did not communicate they would also be billing my insurance, did not return my call when I called (as requested) with an update, and in my opinion, had no intention on refunding me.

Warning to the South Bay: This is NOT the local, caring optometry office it pretends to be. They are part of VSP Ventures, a massive corporate giant (Google it & see attached pic), and it shows. They treat patients like numbers on a spreadsheet, not humans and repeatedly got my eye exams wrong. The Negligence: For six years, they failed to diagnose a standard condition I've had since 2017. In July 2025, Dr. Lee removed my astigmatism correction entirely. When I explicitly told her I couldn't see and questioned the prescription, I was dismissed. A manager promised to call me back--no one ever did. The Result: I spent months driving with dangerous, blurry vision and wasted over $3,000 on 9 pairs of useless glasses because I thought better glasses would help me, but the problem was their incompetence. I finally went to a new independent doctor (Leaf Optometry), who immediately diagnosed the issue and confirmed Manhattan Beach Vision Group has been getting it wrong for years after looking over all my previous prescriptions. Do not trust your eyes to this factory. They care about volume, not accuracy. Go to a real local doctor who actually listens and cares.

Once I was in the room with Dr. Luan Lee, I agreed to an $39 out-of-pocket charge to check my retina. After the glasses prescription exam, Dr. Luan Lee suggested a contact lens fitting "to make the most of the visit," without disclosing that it would cost $150. I only learned of this charge at checkout. When I questioned it, the interaction became uncomfortable. They eventually agreed to remove the charge in exchange for deleting the contact lens fitting data. Additionally, my name was spelled incorrectly on the printed glasses prescription I took home, even after I asked for it to be corrected. The checkout experience felt rushed and uncomfortable, and I left without having my existing glasses tightened, despite needing an adjustment due to normal wear, which was disappointing. On a positive note, the technician who performed my initial tests before I saw the doctor was very professional and courteous. I am sharing this review so others considering this office know to be vigilant, ask detailed questions, and get clear confirmation of costs upfront. I will not be returning.

Second, there are a ton of employees and it's like being in Grand Central Station because they are all running back and forth really fast. I was sitting in a room with the door open and I felt like that episode in Twilight Zone of the freak that everyone looks at because they literally stopped and looked on their way by. I even mentioned that to the guy that was helping me. I've never had that experience before. When I booked the appointment they didn't tell me that the dilation would last 3 to 5 hours and I would have really liked to have known that and would have made arrangements for drop off and pick up since driving home in traffic with the sun in my eyes was a challenge. At the end I got Dr. Besser and I really like him. Good doctor that showed me the pics of my eyes and answered my questions so for him, I will recommend.

He spent a good amount of time with me and answered all my questions. Really helped address the issues I was having. I found the care to be exceptional. My only real issue was with his assistant who did my intake. He was a bit overly inquisitive about unrelated medical issues and medications. And I'm not particularly shy or private during medical visits. While I do appreciate a solid work up and documented medical history, there's a fine line between getting too nosy and asking about unrelated personal issues during an ophthalmology appointment. Also, the doctor dilated my pupils without any warning or discussion which made it challenging for me to drive home. I would've appreciated a heads up and being advised that I wouldn't be able to see clearly for well over an hour. I have since referred him to friends, so the issues were relatively minor compared to the level of care and expertise.
