Went for an early dinner at Agave and really enjoyed the food. Loved the queso and chips. I could have made a meal of that! My enchiladas were wonderful, my husband's fajitas were delicious. Plenty of food, no one left hungry. And the prices were definitely reasonable. Not the best margarita I've ever had, but very good. It was really noisy so I took away a star for that. We dined here a couple days ago and had such a great experience. Their margarita pitcher is a perfect serving size for a couple, plus it tasted so delicious (a plus... it has no artificial syrups!). The food was also really good, we shared appetizers and entrees, about six dishes in total and we enjoyed every single one of it. My friend and I came to this place I believe 2-3 times during our trip. The agavarita is delicious & strong! First we had the happy hour special (street tacos & steak torta) both were delicious! Another time we had the artichoke dip which was one of the best artichoke dips I've had as well as the burrito bowls (shrimp & steak) both delicious! Ended off with the churros which were a hit as well! Coming from NY where we have authentic Mexican food around, we rate the food highly here. However, the service can get better. We had to ask for water about 10 minutes after sitting down and the margaritas took a long time (the place wasn't busy). Just so so. I was really impressed with the warm blue and red chips with fresh salsa and queso dip and had high hopes for dinner. I do wish the salsa had some heat though. I ordered the carne asada tacos which according to the menu were supposed to come with corn tortillas but instead the server noted flour by mistake. Since the menu says corn unless otherwise noted i didn't think i needed to specify. Super disappointed they came out as flour! Totally ruined it in my opinion. The server later apologized but didn't discount anything on the bill for his mistake. My husband ordered chicken enchiladas and they were in kind of a soggy flour tortilla. The chicken was okay but the carne asada was large chunks of steak, not what you would typically find in a carne asada taco. Very "americanized" mexican food. If you're looking for authentic mexican carne asada street tacos this is not the place. Oh well, next time i'll just try something else. Dark and noisy for a restaurant but friendly service made up for it. Great bar atmosphere though and decent prices for entrees. Appetizers are a little steep for what you get. Al in all, just okay. i was hoping it would be my new favorite but i'll have to give it one more try. read more

Seriously fantastic food and drinks. It's hard to find good vegetarian friendly food on the island and this place was a breath of fresh air. I visited this restaurant with my husband and two friends while on vacation. The drinks were great and so was the food, but the treatment we received as patrons was not. My husband has an anaphylactic allergy to tomatoes. Because of that we also stay away from tomatillos which is also a nightshade and he's had issues with them in the past. We ordered his food without both and on the side for shared appetizers. We received our food with tomatillos on it. Our server tried to get it replaced, but an extremely rude bartender came over and told us we were wrong and they wouldn't do anything about it. We were refused a replacement and charged for it. There's nothing okay with yelling at your customer that they're wrong about their anaphylactic allergies. read more

Could not recommend more highly. Slow service and just ok bar food. Don't waste your time. My husband and I made reservations and still waited an hour and a half for our food. My husband got a burger and I got a burrito. The burrito was greasy and overpriced. The manager took it upon himself to come speak with us after our meal. He came out with an attitude and basically blamed us for ordering a medium-well burger. He told us a medium-well burger takes 25 minutes to cook so we should have expected the delay, even though we waited 90 minutes. He added in some other excuses including covid and claiming that the usvi is a "third-world country". We understand slow service but didn't appreciate the fake apology and unnecessary excuses. Was in St. Thomas on vacation and was tired of eating at the resort. We decided to venture out and try something off of the hotel. We ended up at Agave in Red Hook. The service was great and the waitress was attentive and pleasant. The food was sub standard. To be fair I am from Southern CA where we have some of the best Mexican food. However, there is nothing Mexican about Agave's food. The salsa had chunks of frozen salsa in it and wasn't fresh. The chips were full of oil, soggy and under cooked. I ordered the Mexican street corn and it was nothing like traditional Mexican elote. The shrimp tacos I ordered for my entree were super disappointing. The veggies weren't fresh and the taco was dry and boring. This place is great to grab a cocktail but not to eat dinner. read more

This place took a long time to get us our food, gave us the wrong orders at least 3 times (during appetizers and entrees), the food was terrible, and most importantly they tried to scam us!! We had to pay $14 for water because we weren't given the option of tap water. At the end they charged us for more than we ordered and added gratuity, but they told us gratuity was not added, scamming us out of more than $40! I really hate to leave a negative review but feel like I should warn others who are thinking of going here. To start, the food was mediocre and the carnitas were way too salty. Additionally, the service was really slow and they brought us the wrong appetizer and entrees. However, the worst part was when we got the check, they refused to give us an itemized receipt and overcharged us. When we calculated the prices of everything we ordered ourselves, we found the total was more than $40 less than what we already paid. When we asked the waitress about it, she refused to refund us and told us to come back in a few days when the IT guy was there. I would really have liked to believe that she just made an honest mistake and accidentally added an extra item to the bill or something like that, but she lied to our faces several times (ie told us that there was tax on food when there is none in the usvi), so I really feel like we were just being scammed. I would definitely recommend checking this place out if you're in Red Hook. We really enjoyed the previous spot Melt (casual Mexican that used to have a shuffle board) so we gave this place a shot and my family all thought it was very good. It's still Mexican food, but a bit more upscale. They were able to accommodate my mushroom allergy for the vegetarian fajitas (I just got peppers and onions) and it was delicious. Was walking by and our group decided to go in for dinner. This is a new restaurant in Red Hook that took the place of Melt. The hostess was really friendly and got us seated right away. I asked the bartender for his best margarita and he recommended the Blackberry Mule. Tequila, Mescal, Ginger Beer and blackberries. Fantastic. We order chips, salsa and guacamole. The guacamole was real good but the salsa was amazing. It was more of a paste style that I have never had before. This is the first time the salsa went before the guacamole. We ordered a second one. The tacos and fajitas were real good as well. Overall our group enjoyed everything we had. The best part, it is reasonably priced for this area. read more

The day we went our server wasn't having the best of days because another table was just rude and complained the beans were too salty. She and the manager handled the situation as true professionals! This place deserves no stars. It seems like their practice is to disregard patrons' safety by ignoring social distancing rules. To abide by the rules, we moved our chairs closer to the people in our party and they decided to add seating to allow other patrons within 3 inches of us. When we stated that we were uncomfortable with being in such close quarters, the bar manager Brian Gillish said that we could move, even though we were already seated and being served, or leave. His statements hurt because we were the only party of LOCALS at the establishment and the Bar manager's behavior was passive aggressive, disrespectful, and condescending. We left hurt and disappointed . I was born and raised here in the USVI and i brought company with me. It seems like he was more interested in fitting more people mat the bar instead of facing the reality that we are still in a pandemic. My family and I had to do tests and wear masks to visit our beloved island and yet we are treated like peasants when we try to give our money back to our community. It spoiled our entire trip. Consider options that value you as a person when choosing a restaurant and skip this one. read more

The hostess was incredibly accommodating with our reservation changes. Our 2 kids were treated very well and so were the 3 adults. We had a variety of dishes--calamari, quesadillas, carne asada bowl, carnitas bowl, and enchiladas. The flavors were amazing. My carnitas bowl was by far the best I've ever had. The meat was tender and full of charred barbecue island flavor. The rice, the black beans, .... full of flavor. The carne asada was equally outstanding. So good! The black bean dip was very flavorful and the chips were great. I got the vegetarian bowl and it was so delicious. Usually bean & rice dishes are very plain, but this one had so many great spices and flavors. Big portion too.
