Great hole in the wall Mexican restaurant. Authentic flavor. It's super tiny inside, but cozy. Like most said, no chip and salsa, just refried beans inside a fold over tortilla. Thinking about it, chip and salsa always fills us up before we get our main course, so it was no big deal. The mole sauce on the Enchiladas, my girlfriend had was on point, and my Pollo a la Diabla was spicy and flavorful. We asked for hot sauce, and was expecting Tapatio, but the server brought out their house made sauce, which was way better than we expected. Perfect amount of spices and flavor that doesn't overpower the dish itself. We still had room for desert, so we tried the Fried Ice Cream, and it was delicious! This is a small place, An old converted house, in Gresham. The food is strait up amazing! No one else comes close to this place. This place is one of those hole in the wall places that you search for because you know that no matter what ends up on your plate, it is going to be delicious! It is a little off the beaten path, but well worth finding. The service we received was fantastic. Our waiter came back multiple times to fill our drinks, make sure all our needs were met, and of course to check on the taste of the food. I ended up ordering the carne asada nachos and they filled up the entire plate. Now this plate wasn't a normal one. It was a gigantic Texas sized plate! Every bite I had was excellent and covered full of the right amount of food. The chips were crispy and never got soggy. One thing I really liked was instead of bringing out your typical chips and salsa, everyone received their own small bean taco as an appetizer. Cute place and great atmosphere. We went back tonight for our second visit, in a month. And added a star from my last review. The guacamole is so good here. My wife had the pollo en mole enchiladas again this time while I opted for the carne asada plate. What great flavors. And they will happily substitute or leave out items you may not want. I was so looking forward to trying this place. Mexican Food has always been a favorite of my family and to see so many positive reviews for a place that was close by seemed to good to be true. And it was. My son loved the little bean burritos that they served us, I would have preferred chips and salsa. I ordered the chile relleno and it was full of seeds, broken toothpicks and sat atop what I can almost guarantee was plain white minute rice. Strangely, the other dishes came with a more traditional Mexican style rice. Why they use the white rice for the rellenos is beyond me. The other dishes my family got I didn't try except for my son's cheese enchiladas. He was really happy with them; he's 8. They were uninteresting soggy things in my opinion. I won't be going back. Do they have amazing food? No. It's average to be honest. I have had better but it's not horrible either. Service is ok, depending on when you go because it's a small place and not well staffed but they are very friendly. Keep in mind location, that's why you get high ratings. I have been reading posts for Agave Azul since first seeing the little sign off Powell. We are always looking for good authentic Mexican food but usually end up eating at the local carts and wagons. We finally made it to this quaint little place on Saturday night. It was like walking into someones home, and a bit confusing at first as to where to go to get a table. The atmosphere was very comfortable and homey and the gentleman (Juan) that greeted me was also very friendly. We ended up sitting at the bar on unusually comfortable bar stools. This was a great spot as we were able to mingle and interact with the staff (and owners) all the while starring at the great tequila selection. The menu was simple - in a good way. The little soft bean taco and salsa in lieu of the usual chips and salsa was refreshing change and very good.... A+ on that salsa. I had the tacos de asada, black bean, and rice and a fish taco. My girlfriend had the pollo fajitas which filled the room with the rich smell of spices and grilled veggies....Everything was very good and priced right, and did I mention the salsa. The margarita (on the rocks) was very good as well with a good balance of tequila and mix and not overly sweet. They also had $2 draft pints of Coors which was a nice change to the beer pricing norm. I had a nice conversation with Juan and the senoritas over the course of our meal and we both felt very comfortable and cozy during our visit. I am reserving the four stars for now, but may upgrade to five stars after a few more visits. We will be back ! read more

Staff was very friendly and attentive. Instead of chips and salsa we were greeted with a soft corn tortilla spread with gently spiced refried beans and a small dish of very unique non-chunky salsa. This salsa had lots of flavor packed into a small spoonful, with several different layers of heat, not just a flavorless lip burn like your basic chopped tomato and jalapeno stuff. We enjoyed it quite a bit. My husband had a surf-and-turf combo of carne asada and camarones a la diabla. The shrimp was almost too spicy for me, but he loved it. It was cooked to perfection, tender and moist, in a sauce with mushrooms and aromatics. Careful though, they leave the tails on! The carne asada was sliced thin, tender and cooked to a perfect medium. It can NOT be easy to cook such thin slices of beef to be ever so slightly charred on the edges and juicy pink inside. I will order the carne asada when we go back -- and we will definitely be going back! Also wonderful was my chicken in mole sauce, with a side of deliciously sauced black beans; almost a bean soup. I cut my chicken with the side of my fork, it was so tender. I can never resist a chile relleno and almost got one of the several combos that include one, but everything seemed so authentic that I decided I had to try their mole. Mole sauce is a bit different everywhere you go, and this was one of the best I've ever had. Very nutty, with a complex, layered mix of flavors. I did get a relleno a la carte (not on the menu, but the staff was happy to accommodate me) -- what a treat! The poblano was roasted, not steamed and soggy; filled with a mild white cheese and hugged by a fluffy egg batter that held up well under the light ranchero sauce poured over it. Possibly the best tasting relleno I've ever had, though I'd have preferred it de-seeded as some are -- the seeds were rather tough and had a bit more mouth-burn than I like. All in all I was quite surprised to find such a treat so far off the beaten foodie path of the inner PDX neighborhoods. read more

I chose this restaurant because of all of the great TA reviews while here for the weekend with my family. We were not disappointed. The food was outstanding. The only slightly negatives were the noise level was pretty high (largely because of the noisy family sitting next to us) and the service was a bit slow.
