I went into this souvenir store yesterday evening to buy some post cards and gifts. The store was nice enough, but a bit disorganized. I bought 2 dozen postcards, all varying prices from 30 cents- 50 cents. I made certain with extreme precision that I bought a dozen 30 cent postcards and a dozen 50 cent postcards. When checking out, the girl scanned 1 postcard and not the others. I was charged 50 cents a postcard. I told her that 12 was suppose to be 50 cents and the other 12 was 30 cents. I told her I was overcharged and requested for her to rescan all of the postcards individually so that I can be charged the correct prices. She refused to do it and just became very rude. I was even willing to show her the price signs showing the prices. I will not be returning to this store. Rude and dishonest customer service. I hope the manager does a better job at hiring a more reliable employee with an ounce of decency towards their paying customers. Also please honor your prices that you advertise on your price racks. Everyone, I urge you to double check your receipt when purchasing anything here. They will overcharge you. This store has 0 integrity! So disappointed... read more

Last Sunday I spent the entire day in Monterey. Monterey is a touristy city but it's really fun (I usually do not fall for places that are packed with tourists). After the Quake was one of the positive surprises I found there. I could get presents for everyone, even those who are really hard to please with got my presents for the first time. This store has traditional and fun gifts and despite being located in a touristy area the prices are not that bad. I also loved the penny stamping machine and the wooden sculptures located in the front. It gave the shop a nice appearance and made the visit more fun. Anyone who is into fun & uncommon gifts should visit this place, it's a nice addition to the area. read more

This is a touristy gifty shop right off cannery row with a disater zone theme. Parking is usually street only but the side of the street that after the quake is on has some construction zone stuff going on right now, so any of the pay lot/garages nearby are a much better bet. The store draws you in with a couple of life size statues-a chp officer, fisherman, bear and/or a firefighter-and it's kitschy disaster signage. inside the store it's decorated with a post earthquake theme-exposed ducting, fake cracked walls and an overturned vw beetle which has been purposed as a display. Once you find the vw spin the tires which have stuffed animals on them. It's kitschy thing to do true, but this store is all about the small pleasures. Take them when you find them. This is a large store, but due to the way it's laid out it may not be obvious right away exactly how big it is. It's logically organized-all the t shirts in one section all the maps in another, all the jewelry in one spot etc. So once you find a grouping of shirts as an example there won't be more hidden away somewhere else in the store. They carry a wide range of stuff but it all falls into the tourist gift category. Pretty much anything that can be monterey branded is available here. Having said that it is possible to find things that aren't california/monterey branded but even then there is a distinct beach/ocean theme going on. Pricing here is slightly higher for some reason then anywhere else on the row. Make sure to check the 50-75 percent off rack near the back wall, and it also may be helpful to comparison shop, as there are a lot of shops selling identical or very similar items nearby. Quality overall isn't too bad here though. Overall this is an excellent spot to start your gift shopping. read more

Date: 8/11/2015 Time: 2:10 PM 70° Sunny Walking along Cannery Row and just leaving from Lids, my husband and I saw After the Quake from across the street. He wanted to see what type of merchandise they carry. After the Quake is one of those touristy store selling an assortment of souvenirs, as in tee shirts, hoodies, key chains, magnets, mugs, sunglasses, trinkets, post cards, tote bags, holiday seasonal ornaments, etc. Husband asked me to pick some kind of souvenir item (possibly a pair of sunglasses). Well, I did not see any particular pair that I care for - some were of flimsy quality and then others were just plain ugly and bulky looking. They were made in China and being sold for $12.99 a pair...meh...I don't think so. He suggested that I get another souvenir item, as he was paying. All right, no need to look a gift horse in the mouth. I'm not much of an impulsive buyer of memorabilias and/or souvenirs. Thus, I just grabbed an ornament made with decorative shells and had Monterey written on it for $9.99. Again, a product made in China...ugh...reminds me of Peking Bazaar on Grant Street in SF Chinatown. He added two key chains at the price of $6.98 each. When he went to pay for the three items, he and I weren't able to find the employees until we walked further into the store. Two young female employees were standing by the cash register. One rang up the purchased items. Merchandise total including tax: $26.04. Since I needed a bag to hold those items, they charge us an additional 25¢ for their bag. Three small items and they couldn't put those items in a size 8 paper bag, which is about the size of a lunch bag, at no additional charge. Hmmm...what a way to squeeze money out of a tourist...25¢ for a big recyclable plastic bag. read more

Really? You wanted the ceramic peeing cow (bright yellow urine frozen in mid-stream, of course) just because it's got "Hawaii" branded on it's chest? Ok, let's talk about why we are friends. At After the Quake, we found not only cute souvenirs worthy of even the most high-falutin' giftee, but clothing and other accessories for daily use. The best part? The prices are reasonable. (PLEASE READ, WORTH IT!!!!) On 1/4/2020 after the Aquarium I went in with my wife and daughter to buy souvenirs, we got 3 glasses ($9.99 each) which were BUY 2 GET 1 FREE and a keychain that was also $9.99. A rude Mexican girl with her mother attended me. First the younger (30 something) Mexican girl scanned the 3 pairs of glasses my wife had ahead of me with a total of $34.45 which were buy 2 get 1 and $10 each, total should have been $21 and change. I bring up the keychain and tell her to ring it up and add it aswell and I had a total of $45.39 after taxes for $30 worth of stuff. I told mentioned there should be an error there and she and she insisted I'm a negative manner "No that's with tax!" I then told her, "The glasses are buy 2 get 1 free that's where the mistake probably is"... then she re works the register and says, "Ok that'll be $40.37!" Then by that point I was a bit frustrated knowing she was lying and said, "Listen with some basic math, 4 items at $10 each, ONE BEING FREE, and about a 9% CA Tax, the total should be about $33 dollars!" Then she re worked the register one last time with a total of $32 and some change WITHOUT ANY REMORSE. Then I mumbled "Yeah dont worry about the mistake" because I felt she didnt give a crap about lying and trying to steal from us TWICE! Then she had the nerve to say "WHY ARE YOU GUYS ******* CRYING!" And I loudly told her "Because you are a thief that doesnt care and tries to take advantage of tourists and you dont care" and walked out. Fun shop at Cannery Row with higher quality souviners, and various gift items. I found a couple of nice pairs of seashell earrings. Spacious inside and plenty to look at. Fun wooden sculptures in front and a penny stamping machine. Good place to stop and be a tourist! read more

I purchased a Monterey insignia jacket. The jacket is defective and I would like to return it back and exchange for one that is not defective. The number listed for the store is a nonworking phone number. When I contacted my financial institution they provided me with another number and to no avail this number was not a business line. A recorded message by a Hispanic woman answered the phone as a private civilian personal call. I am not sure if this is the business phone numbe. All I want to is exchange the merchandise for the exact same item in my size, if there are any still available. I am in hopes I can get this matter taken care of expeditiously and without provocation. If no one takes my call or returns my call. I will exercise my legal right. I am not sure why the store clerks do not answer the phone during business hours. I live too far away to take it back in person. A word to the wise... Be careful when you buy merchandise check it out fully and make sure that everything is intact before your purchase. read more

My sister and I like a good bargain. We found some really cute Monterey long sleeved shirts for $12 on discount. On a street full of tourists traps, that sounds pretty reasonable. It's definitely one of the shops with a larger selection. I would recommend it for the average tourist. read more

I have been coming to this store for years, and I absolutely love it. The ONLY reason I'm giving it one star is because of how I was treated. Very poor customer service!! I came in 8/18/19 around 4pm or so, just looking around, my guy bought something, and I was in the front looking at the sunglasses. After he purchased his item, he came up and was trying them on with me, and this lady was hovering over us. (I had thought she was looking at them too) I put the sunglasses back, and we were walking out, and all I hear is "are you going to pay for those?!" She was talking about MY sunglasses I had walked into the store with. I told her "uh no, I came in with these" and she has responded with "well there is one missing" I then responded with, "these are mine. Do you have cameras?" She very rudely and loudly said "YES WE DO." I told her to go check the cameras and she'd see that I walked in the store with them. She didn't apologize, she just got all puffy and walked away. Very rude to just assume someone is stealing! I am no thief. I have been coming here for years and have never felt so disrespected by a staff member. She definitely needs to be taught customer service skills! She shouldn't be working there if she can't make customers feel comfortable or welcome. read more

We always go in here when we are at the Row. It is fun to walk around, look at stuff, and sometimes pick up a trinket or something if we want to. The decor inside hasn't changed in, well, years. Stopped in here cuz they had their Monterey sweatshirts outside and the price was cheaper than the other stores around there. I was looking for a very specific colored Monterey hoody. I've only seen it in one store on one of our many visits to Monterey but I forgot which store it was. I also wanted to see what knick knacks they had in here. I really like their humurous magnets and shot glasses. I thought the magnets were pretty pricey at $6.50. They have a ton of Monterey t-shirts, sweatshirts, and hoodies. Just not the one I wanted. Yes, customer service doesn't exist in this store. I agree with Nine N. about the woman who doesn't talk to you. I'd probably come back to get a shot glass or something. read more

These people are straight up criminal. They not only would not give me a refund for a shirt that my girlfriend bought for me while I was looking at something else in the store, they purposefully took the same shirts off the racks because they had a lower price on them. They charged her $60 for the shirt and when the sticker had said $25.99. Literally two minutes later I saw the receipt and the $60 charge, I immediately asked for a refund and they said I could only exchange for some other merchandise. I then went back to the rack where the shirts were located and they were all gone!!! She had taken them off the rack and denied doing so to me!!!! A person who does these kind if business practices should not be in business. Please do not shop here. They are obviously liars and do not deserve your business. read more

They had many different sales going on so I was able to get more for my money. They had a variety of magnets, shot glasses, sweaters, bathing suits and more all unique. Can't believe I am the first one to review this place. If you want your California and/or Monterey souvenirs, this is the place to come. Cheap cheap cheap shirt/hat combos. I have come here on numerous occasions with friends, not that bad. I only have a problem with the decor. The building is supposed to look like....yep you guessed it...after a pretty bad quake. Having been in pretty bad earthquakes, I don't see the appeal or the whole "ooh and aw" with tourists and earthquakes. How tacky would it be to open a store on the Gulf Coast called "After The Hurricane" and have watermarks all over the walls and sand and silt all over the floor. But hey, that's just me. Anyways, like I said: a great place for souvenirs. Popped in just to buy my girlfriend a key chain because she's one of those funky, "Hey I collect key chains from different Cities just because..." kind of people. Super inexpensive and poor quality items. Oh well.. it'll do if you're just purchasing the essential, cheapo mementos for friends that insist you bring something back. Like other yelpers have mentioned, the decor is funky and unattractive. I understand that they're going with the theme of the place but you have to draw the line somewhere. I liked the merchandise. Store was clean. Sweater I bought is good quality and I really like it. Only reason I give this place a 3 is because twice when I went they start kicking you out even before they are closed. The girl sweeping comes around and tells you that they are closing in a very rude manner. You can't shop like that. I did spend like 90 dollars and would've bought more but the pressure made me leave. I almost left without buying anything because of the pressure and constant reminders that they were closing. But the minute my mom walked into the store for change to make a souvenir penny (at THEIR location) she was treated as though she was the scum of the earth and greatly disrespected. I'm a big sucker for anything Sulley related and as such I saw a beanie baby Sulley while walking by and I had to have him. All went good until I payed. I tried to use an older fifty dollar bill(1990 pre watermark ) and the cashier took one look at a it and asked if I had some other form of payment which I did.I used my credit card and thought the entire thing was odd but I figured that since they are in a tourist area that they have to be careful. Later that same day my mom and sister went and my mom used another pre watermark $50 and unlike me the cashier lady gave it the special pen check and put it under a uv light and called the manager over to ok it( which wasn't needed since she checked it!) My mom and I suddenly realized that the cashier racially profiled me by asking me for another payment as soon as I handed hey money vs checking it like she just did for my mom. she was also rude to my mom and sis and that was when my mom called her out on and threatened to leave and asked why was my son (me) treated like this and made to use an alternate payment while you checked and took mine? they said it was policy to sometimes do that and said that it was too soft Although I pointed out out that they never checked my money. my mom asked if it was because I was black (my sis and I are black and our parents are white) or if it was because I was a kid and she said that it wasn't still claiming it was policy, the cashier even said I was handsome which was obvisly a ploy to cover her ass. so my mom payed( with her $50 by the way!) and left and I will never go back to that one! so beware if your black(or any other race that is not Mexican) or have older money because you will be treated like shit read more

This store stinks. As it won't take back item which was accidentally purchased by mistake. I have not even left the store on the day of purchase and found out I bought the wrong item.
