The candy stores are always a favorite, and I love how every shop has something different to offer. The views of the ocean are absolutely gorgeous, making it easy to spend a few hours just strolling around and taking everything in. Every time we visit Monterey Bay, we walk around cannery row. Since we've been coming to the aquarium for over 10 years, it's a must walking and shopping on cannery row. We've stayed at a couple hotels here as well! You don't even have to leave your hotel, cannery row has everything from dinning to shopping and entertainment, also great dessert and coffee shops. Gorgeous seaside views, fantastic restaurants, quaint shops; Cannery Row is an iconic oceanfront boardwalk attraction that is definitely worth a visit when you're in Monterey. Upon approach, it may seem that there isn't all that much to it, but once you're on the boardwalk, you realize that a lot of the good stuff is tucked away, a little out of sight, so exploration rewards the traveler. Apparently the aquarium here is also quite the draw, although we didn't pop in during our brief stay here. Lastly, the old Fisherman's Wharf, a little ways to the south-southeast, is almost an extension of all the things that make Cannery Row worth checking out: more shops, more restaurants, and more history. We went to the Monterey aquarium, which takes a lot longer than you would think. It's a two story, with outdoor observation deck, plus very busy place--w lots of ppl. We shopped at a few tourist-y shoppes and ate lunch there. If I were to do it over, I'd have scheduled wine tastings at few of the wine shoppes around. We walked past 2-3 of them. Cannery Row is much lovelier and more alive than I remember from the last time I visited, over a decade ago. Yes, I remember this place being a ghost town, it was so dead and uneventful that I avoided it for that long. Glad I chose to return this past Sunday... no longer a ghost town, but also not super crowded like other touristy spots. Lots of cute and diverse specialty shops, perfect for finding unique gifts during the holiday season (Pepper Palace, As Seen on TV, Sockshop Cannery Row... even the Five & Dime General Store had unique stuff like critter can animals and a Betty Boop swinging legs wall clock), art galleries (my fave being Thomas Kinkade), mini golf (Tipsy Putt opening soon), plenty of options for snacks and beverages, from sweet treats at Rock N Roll Donut Bar to winemaking and winetasting at The Wine Experience (along with pizza, sandwiches, and seafood restaurants), theater performances at Paper Wing, in which they had an improv show this past weekend, an awesome antique mall (with some great finds I absolutely loved), and of course touristy attractions like the mirror maze, Oscar's Playground (arcade and escape room) and even a Treasure Hunt theme park ride (I'm too curious not to try this on my next visit to Cannery Row, even if I'm not a kid). By the way, Zucchini's Tricks n Things is not just a shop, it's entertainment too cuz the owner is awesome and will do demonstrations of the magic tricks for items they sell in the store. Also, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, obviously one of the best, is always a treat to visit. Parking is pricey but convenient in the Cannery Row Public Parking Garage. But I was able to find metered street parking nearby at $2 per hour. Overall plenty to do and see at this historic destination in Monterey. read more

Just Row With It Made famous by John Steinbeck's eponymous novel, this place resembles the Cannery Row (CR) of yesteryear like my body resembles that of an actual human being. Formerly a grungy haven of fisheries and candies, over the years, this area has been sculpted into a tourist haven that's now more synonymous with shopping and restaurants than longshoreman and boats. I almost always bring out-of-town guests here, as this is the kind of shit that they love: shops, food and views. The Good: *Can't avoid this area if one wants to visit the world famous Monterey Bay Aquarium (MBA), which is by far the best reason to come. *There are actually some pretty great restaurants here; the Fish Hopper and Whaling Station are two of my favorites--and you can't beat Ghirardelli's for some iced creams. :-P *Fantastic views all along the Row *MaCabee Beach is a great spot to go in between shopping and dining. Nice little beach for dipping your toes and letting the little 'uns get wet. *Lots of souvenir stands *I love exploring all the hallways, catwalks and inner shops in the more grungy areas of CR. That's some real creepy shit, yo. *Plenty of parking--for a price. Pro Tip: The further you go from the MBA, the cheaper parking gets. The Meh: *While parking is pretty easy, it ain't gonna be cheap. I do believe that it does get cheaper on weekdays, tho. The Ugly: *If you come during the busy summer season, this place can be a shit-show of tourists and people. Not for the covid squeamish. TLDR: I can understand why people don't like this place, but I've been visiting here since I was a wee lad so I know what to expect. If you are looking for the outlets, they are long gone. You will see some broken windows and an empty building. If you'd like Pendleton, they did put a store in just down the street, but it is retail occasionally with some really good bargains at the right time of the year in the main set of Cannery Row. You will find multiple tourist trap shops with your knickknacks to bring home, they will remain in drawers and closets ever to see the light of day again. There are a couple of fine art shops that we've gone to over the years, but they are few and far between for those that like chocolate Ghirardelli still has a shop which is still fun to select all the different types of chocolate that they carry and you can get a fabulous Sunday so don't eat at the small little restaurants save room for the Sunday parking is available in pay lots around the cannery I put your walking shoes on you are near the aquarium which is a great stop for the family if you go towards Pacific Grove on a walkway, you will see seals sleeping. Service is hard to comment on because this is multiple shops and not every shop is tourist friendly even though they sell tourist items read more

Cannery Row is a very nice area to walk around and shop or just look around. Colorful, vibrant, diverse environment, good vibes, etc. It's definitely designed for walkers. Biking adventures isn't far. Walking along the coast is doable. Perfect location with lots of retail shops, restaurants & attractions nearby. I really do appreciate history and communities that make things happen. Monterey, CA is indeed very special. Public street parking isn't too bad with lesser crowds these days. $2 per hour is still in effect. Not difficult to find parking during non peak days and non peak hours. Cannery Row is a landmark gem. I always find something I like to buy in boutique stores and gift shops. Foods are good too. People are friendly with lots of tourists. Worth visiting this valuable site. You will find great spots for photos or ice creams too. It's packed with goodies. I think it adds value to the city of Monterey with good diversity and cultures. There's not many other cities with the same landmarks. Carmel By The Sea and Downtown Monterey are also favorite stops too. Not too far. Adventurous and fun places to walk. read more

Great tourist location with restaurants and store. Good to experience one time at least and check out what there is to offer. Most folks come here for the aquarium, and hotel. Streets are clean and nice with tourist walking. Would advise against driving through here with too much foot traffic and slower speeds. Some really nice restaurants all over and it is happening place even in the daytime. The small walk will cover the area but finding car parking may be challenging sometimes. Although Cannery Row screams tourist trap, there's actually a lot of pretty cool places to go to while walking around. For me, I think 1.5-3 hours will definitely suffice the time it takes to check out everything but it depends on each person's pacing. Here are some of my favorite things: - You can actually walk across the three "bridges" that overlook the main street of Cannery Row. Finding those are a pretty fun adventure. - While you're trying to find the "bridge", the plazas itself are quite maze-like and pretty interesting to just walk around. It feels very Haunted House-esque. - McAbee Beach borders the row and there are some pretty cool sights here with the waters crashing very close to the storefronts. - Try to go underneath the Fish Hopper restaurant, here you will find a lot of the under the boardwalk vibes that is pretty cool to explore. Overall, pretty fun experience at Cannery Row. Now, only wish the COVID-19 will quickly pass so that the Aquarium can open up, which is definitely the highlight of the street. read more

Also home of the World Renown Monterey Bay Aquarium. during the summer months there is a trolley you can take to the various Tourist Spots in Monterey to avoid having to look for parking. Parking is street (hourly) or paid parking garage. If the weather is beautiful, you can stroll or rent a bike and go down to Lover's Point beach or the other direction of the walkway and go to the Wharf. read more

It's a cute strip of shops, restaurants and hotels. Most of the restaurant are along the water so waterfront dining is nice. Of course everything is all outdoor dining with covid. There's also a little strip of beach here and there that you can enjoy. Walking along the shops, you have all your trinkets shops. There was also a wine tasting shop but didn't get a chance to try out. There are a lot of shops inside of the building so make a round inside as well as outside the area. Majority are open. There's also a couple of hotels that's located right in the heart of the area. Cute place for a stroll. Not sure how busy it could get during the weekend but crowd was good on a Tuesday. read more

Where all the tourists go... Like many tourist spots near the water the Cannery Row in Monterey is popular and heavily visited by people from all over year round. It is a waterfront street with lots of shopping, eating and entertainment places to enjoy near the coast. I've been here many times ever since I used to live closer in the South Bay. I've always loved it. The Monterey Bay Aquarium sits at the end of Cannery Row. If you have time this is a cool place to visit. It is huge with lots of marine life exhibits to see including interactive fun activities for kids. It is expensive to get in but if you can get some kind of discount (AAA, Costco, employer deals, etc) that would be cool. I miss the seahorses. They've moved the exhibit elsewhere :( Cannery Row was once the "Sardine Capitol of the World" it has picturesque charm and a colorful history. It's fun exploring the waterfront from the Cannery Row to Old Fisherman's Wharf especially with the one you love who shares your passion for travel and adventures. I am lucky. Pulitzer and Nobel Prize-winning author John Steinbeck and his family once lived in Pacific Grove next to Cannery Row where most of the material for his books was gathered. Whenever we visit Monterey, Cannery Row always deserves at least several hours of exploration time. There is plenty to see and do here that includes shops, restaurants, bars, night life and entertainment in various forms. Monterey Bay Aquarium is the anchor tourist attraction at the "Row." In my opinion, it increases my enthusiasm and appreciation for this lovely city. It's never a dull moment as you walk from one end of the street, all the way through Old Fisherman's Wharf. I love how it's all together in one location without having to drive all over town! You still get to see scenic views of the bay along with the wildlife that inhabit the area. Historical buildings, museums and commemorative statues help to increase your knowledge about the area in general, even if you didn't realize it has an interesting history, (good and bad)! We walked the path from Fisherman's Wharf to Cannery Row and enjoyed the relaxing walk. We were unsure of the exact route so we referred to the trolley maps as we walked. As the buildings at Cannery Row came into site we were underwhelmed. We thought the area would be cooler than it was, it just didn't seem there was a lot going on. There are quite a few restaurants but we had just eaten a hearty breakfast so we didn't pay much attention to them and of course the aquarium is on the far side of the street. This is one of the biggest tourist traps in the world. Most shops and are touristy, tacky and overpriced...But the kids will probably love this area with all the sweets, toys, and cheesy souvenirs. $7 bar of soap? Check. $20 "Monterey" T shirt, check. Bland ice cream for $4 a scoop? Check. The restaurants completely cater to tourists looking for convenience and a California ocean view. That said, I've eaten at the Fish Hopper and Linguine Louie's, both of which are overpriced but the food was good enough. It seems that all of the shops get their trinkets from the same distributor...lot of the same stuff in more than a few places. But, the Aquarium is very cool. Some of the shops are interesting (with the expected high prices!), and there're plenty of places to grab some food or a drink. Parking? Youch. It's dog-eat-dog to find a spot.
