I love walking around cannery row this was our 2nd stop after visiting the wharf. The aquarium is here and lots of shops and restaurants. I love you can walk down to the water from here. It just a place to visit a be like a tourist.
Every time we visit Monterey Bay, we walk around cannery row. Since we've been coming to the aquarium for over 10 years, it's a must walking and shopping on cannery row. We've stayed at a couple hotels here as well! You don't even have to leave your hotel, cannery row has everything from dinning to shopping and entertainment, also great dessert and coffee shops. Turkish coffee here is amazing! There's something to do for everyone...entertainment for kids, wine tasting for adults, you name it it's here! We love coming here!
It's pretty much a must when visiting Monterey. Yes, it's geared mainly for visitors not locals but, with the greatest aquarium in the world and the history of this part of California, there is something for everyone here. A mix of various shops, tourist gift sellers, restaurants, hotels, and eateries (ice cream shops, delis, and bakeries). On one end, you'll find the aquarium. The other way, you'll reach the Monterey Plaza Hotel and San Carlos Beach. I mainly walked this my 1st evening here on a Thursday and it was on the quiet side (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=264&select=zeTCcVncpby2ciMVUrkz6Q). When I returned Saturday afternoon, the streets were filled but not overwhelming so since there were no major events on this weekend (auto show previous weekend and the Monterey Jazz Festival two weekends later). The weather was comfortable with a cool ocean breeze. It's probably best to prepare your activities somewhere along here after you visit the aquarium if that's on your schedule. Gorgeous seaside views, fantastic restaurants, quaint shops; Cannery Row is an iconic oceanfront boardwalk attraction that is definitely worth a visit when you're in Monterey. Upon approach, it may seem that there isn't all that much to it, but once you're on the boardwalk, you realize that a lot of the good stuff is tucked away, a little out of sight, so exploration rewards the traveler. Apparently the aquarium here is also quite the draw, although we didn't pop in during our brief stay here. Lastly, the old Fisherman's Wharf, a little ways to the south-southeast, is almost an extension of all the things that make Cannery Row worth checking out: more shops, more restaurants, and more history. All together, one of the best attractions, and most exciting tourist destinations, in all of Monterey!
Cannery Row is very historic and has a simplistic charm to it. Sure, it's touristy but that's the beauty of it and why people want to visit. Known for its sardine canneries, (disclaimer: from the web) "the last of these closed in 1973." Cannery Row offers many restaurants, hotels, shops, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, etc. It is always fun to visit.
Cannery Row is a historic cannery town filled with shops and restaurants and the famous Monterey Aquarium. A nice place to browse through the stores and grab good eats.
No trip to Monterey is complete without a walk down Cannery Row. Soo many shops to look at. Candy shops. Clothing shops. Cinnamon roll shop. Baklava shop. Gift shops. The Aquarium. And many restaurants and a fabulous bar. Well worth the walk.
This is the main touristy area of Monterey, and we always come here when we are in town. The main attraction is the aquarium of course, but there are tons of other things to...eat, shop, ride bikes, and people watch.
We went to the Monterey aquarium, which takes a lot longer than you would think. It's a two story, with outdoor observation deck, plus very busy place--w lots of ppl. We shopped at a few tourist-y shoppes and ate lunch there. If I were to do it over, I'd have scheduled wine tastings at few of the wine shoppes around. We walked past 2-3 of them. It was a nice way to spend a rainy, winter day. Took off a star for the outrageously high price we paid to get into the Aquarium.
I live in the area and have been here what seems to be a hundred times. Had some family visiting from up north and took them around to see the bay. A gorgeous day to get out and be a tourist. Lots of fun shopping and great eats. The ocean views are always beautiful. Last words... glad I live here.

The history of the Row is a fascinating tale, from Native American, Asian and European settlement, through the boom and bust of the whaling and sardine industries, to restoration and re-development. Past and present influence the architecture, cuisine and attractions as Cannery Row continues to celebrate the unshakable spirit on which it was founded. Today it is a magnet for tourists and locals alike, where people can shop for art, gifts, souvenirs, etc. Lots of restaurants and cafes make this place also a great stop for a relaxing food stop. A good place to stop by and walk around. Not as much to see as Carmel or the 17 mile drive, but it's worth stopping by. The bougainvillea flowers were gorgeous!!
Cannery Row is much lovelier and more alive than I remember from the last time I visited, over a decade ago. Yes, I remember this place being a ghost town, it was so dead and uneventful that I avoided it for that long. Glad I chose to return this past Sunday... no longer a ghost town, but also not super crowded like other touristy spots. Lots of cute and diverse specialty shops, perfect for finding unique gifts during the holiday season (Pepper Palace, As Seen on TV, Sockshop Cannery Row... even the Five & Dime General Store had unique stuff like critter can animals and a Betty Boop swinging legs wall clock), art galleries (my fave being Thomas Kinkade), mini golf (Tipsy Putt opening soon), plenty of options for snacks and beverages, from sweet treats at Rock N Roll Donut Bar to winemaking and winetasting at The Wine Experience (along with pizza, sandwiches, and seafood restaurants), theater performances at Paper Wing, in which they had an improv show this past weekend, an awesome antique mall (with some great finds I absolutely loved), and of course touristy attractions like the mirror maze, Oscar's Playground (arcade and escape room) and even a Treasure Hunt theme park ride (I'm too curious not to try this on my next visit to Cannery Row, even if I'm not a kid). By the way, Zucchini's Tricks n Things is not just a shop, it's entertainment too cuz the owner is awesome and will do demonstrations of the magic tricks for items they sell in the store. Also, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, obviously one of the best, is always a treat to visit. Parking is pricey but convenient in the Cannery Row Public Parking Garage. But I was able to find metered street parking nearby at $2 per hour. Overall plenty to do and see at this historic destination in Monterey.

Cannery Row in Monterey is a super popular spot to check out when you are visiting Monterey. It is named from the days when the sardine canning industry was booming business on the waterfront. Cannery Row is a long waterfront street packed with many mom and pop shops, restaurants, specialty stores, and a small beach area you can access. At the end of the street is home to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It is a wonderful place to spend part of your day enjoying lunch or having dinner and taking a walk down the street and enjoy the stores and scenery. read more
I always have so much fun walking around Cannery Row. There are so many unique little shops to explore, and I can never leave without picking up a few treats or souvenirs. The candy stores are always a favorite, and I love how every shop has something different to offer. The views of the ocean are absolutely gorgeous, making it easy to spend a few hours just strolling around and taking everything in. Whether you're visiting Monterey for the first time or you've been here before, it's a great place to shop, snack, and enjoy the coastal atmosphere. It's definitely one of my favorite places to stop whenever I'm in the area. read more

Every time we visit Monterey Bay, we walk around cannery row. Since we've been coming to the aquarium for over 10 years, it's a must walking and shopping on cannery row. Just Row With It Made famous by John Steinbeck's eponymous novel, this place resembles the Cannery Row (CR) of yesteryear like my body resembles that of an actual human being. Formerly a grungy haven of fisheries and candies, over the years, this area has been sculpted into a tourist haven that's now more synonymous with shopping and restaurants than longshoreman and boats. I almost always bring out-of-town guests here, as this is the kind of shit that they love: shops, food and views. The Good: *Can't avoid this area if one wants to visit the world famous Monterey Bay Aquarium (MBA), which is by far the best reason to come. *There are actually some pretty great restaurants here; the Fish Hopper and Whaling Station are two of my favorites--and you can't beat Ghirardelli's for some iced creams. :-P *Fantastic views all along the Row *MaCabee Beach is a great spot to go in between shopping and dining. Nice little beach for dipping your toes and letting the little 'uns get wet. *Lots of souvenir stands *I love exploring all the hallways, catwalks and inner shops in the more grungy areas of CR. That's some real creepy shit, yo. *Plenty of parking--for a price. Pro Tip: The further you go from the MBA, the cheaper parking gets. The Meh: *While parking is pretty easy, it ain't gonna be cheap. I do believe that it does get cheaper on weekdays, tho. The Ugly: *If you come during the busy summer season, this place can be a shit-show of tourists and people. Not for the covid squeamish. TLDR: I can understand why people don't like this place, but I've been visiting here since I was a wee lad so I know what to expect. Just pack your patience pants and enjoy the great weather, views and def check out the MBA. read more
Cannery Row is a very nice area to walk around and shop or just look around. Colorful, vibrant, diverse environment, good vibes, etc. It's definitely designed for walkers. Biking adventures isn't far. Walking along the coast is doable. Perfect location with lots of retail shops, restaurants & attractions nearby. I really do appreciate history and communities that make things happen. Monterey, CA is indeed very special. Public street parking isn't too bad with lesser crowds these days. $2 per hour is still in effect. Not difficult to find parking during non peak days and non peak hours. Cannery Row is a landmark gem. I always find something I like to buy in boutique stores and gift shops. Foods are good too. People are friendly with lots of tourists. Worth visiting this valuable site. You will find great spots for photos or ice creams too. It's packed with goodies. I think it adds value to the city of Monterey with good diversity and cultures. There's not many other cities with the same landmarks. Carmel By The Sea and Downtown Monterey are also favorite stops too. Not too far. Adventurous and fun places to walk. read more
Great tourist location with restaurants and store. Good to experience one time at least and check out what there is to offer. Most folks come here for the aquarium, and hotel. Streets are clean and nice with tourist walking. Would advise against driving through here with too much foot traffic and slower speeds. There is metered parking but be careful they do give out tickets and I saw a lot walking through for cars parked. Have a great time! read more

Although Cannery Row screams tourist trap, there's actually a lot of pretty cool places to go to while walking around. For me, I think 1.5-3 hours will definitely suffice the time it takes to check out everything but it depends on each person's pacing. Here are some of my favorite things: - You can actually walk across the three "bridges" that overlook the main street of Cannery Row. Finding those are a pretty fun adventure. - While you're trying to find the "bridge", the plazas itself are quite maze-like and pretty interesting to just walk around. It feels very Haunted House-esque. - McAbee Beach borders the row and there are some pretty cool sights here with the waters crashing very close to the storefronts. - Try to go underneath the Fish Hopper restaurant, here you will find a lot of the under the boardwalk vibes that is pretty cool to explore. Overall, pretty fun experience at Cannery Row. Now, only wish the COVID-19 will quickly pass so that the Aquarium can open up, which is definitely the highlight of the street. read more
You are in vacation so WHY NOT check out the tourist spots! :) Cannery Row is Full of fun shops to get souvenirs, get snacks or dessert / chocolate at Ghiradelli's, dine in a Restaurant (including El Toritos, Bubba Gumps and The Sardine Factory. Also home of the World Renown Monterey Bay Aquarium. during the summer months there is a trolley you can take to the various Tourist Spots in Monterey to avoid having to look for parking. Parking is street (hourly) or paid parking garage. If the weather is beautiful, you can stroll or rent a bike and go down to Lover's Point beach or the other direction of the walkway and go to the Wharf. read more
If you love a very crowded place or pathway then this is for you. However, still worth experiencing once in your life. Some really nice restaurants all over and it is happening place even in the daytime. The small walk will cover the area but finding car parking may be challenging sometimes. Some great ocean-side spots to spend time if you prefer that. read more
I would not go so far as to call this place a Tourist trap, since it has immense value to people coming for a vacation. This is officially my second time (first time when I was a kid) coming to Cannery Row. It is a nicely sized area with lots of things to do. -Wanna browse the shops? -Want to take stunning pictures? -In the mood for Monteray quality food? -Desiring an activity in the water? -Or to just relax and take it easy? Nice to walk around, not too many eaters, but lots of sweet treats up and down the streets. Parking is not as expensive as San Francisco, but definitely prefer this over SF as it's kept clean and no homelessness is around, at least we didn't see any nearby. read more
I've heard a lot about this place from many friends. Even have been to Monterrey a good amount of time, I've have to make a visit. Finally, gave it a shot. It's a cute strip of shops, restaurants and hotels. Most of the restaurant are along the water so waterfront dining is nice. Of course everything is all outdoor dining with covid. There's also a little strip of beach here and there that you can enjoy. Walking along the shops, you have all your trinkets shops. There was also a wine tasting shop but didn't get a chance to try out. There are a lot of shops inside of the building so make a round inside as well as outside the area. Majority are open. There's also a couple of hotels that's located right in the heart of the area. Cute place for a stroll. Not sure how busy it could get during the weekend but crowd was good on a Tuesday. read more
Tourist row. Can't help but take a gander. Good place to take a break and a meal. The aquarium and boat tours are here. It runs parallel to the scenic exercise trail so you can get the best of both worlds. If you are a history buff, there are historic sites nearby. read more

Where all the tourists go... Like many tourist spots near the water the Cannery Row in Monterey is popular and heavily visited by people from all over year round. It is a waterfront street with lots of shopping, eating and entertainment places to enjoy near the coast. I've been here many times ever since I used to live closer in the South Bay. I've always loved it. The Monterey Bay Aquarium sits at the end of Cannery Row. If you have time this is a cool place to visit. It is huge with lots of marine life exhibits to see including interactive fun activities for kids. It is expensive to get in but if you can get some kind of discount (AAA, Costco, employer deals, etc) that would be cool. I miss the seahorses. They've moved the exhibit elsewhere :( Cannery Row was once the "Sardine Capitol of the World" it has picturesque charm and a colorful history. It's fun exploring the waterfront from the Cannery Row to Old Fisherman's Wharf especially with the one you love who shares your passion for travel and adventures. I am lucky. Pulitzer and Nobel Prize-winning author John Steinbeck and his family once lived in Pacific Grove next to Cannery Row where most of the material for his books was gathered. Whenever we visit Monterey, Cannery Row always deserves at least several hours of exploration time. There is plenty to see and do here that includes shops, restaurants, bars, night life and entertainment in various forms. Monterey Bay Aquarium is the anchor tourist attraction at the "Row." In my opinion, it increases my enthusiasm and appreciation for this lovely city. It's never a dull moment as you walk from one end of the street, all the way through Old Fisherman's Wharf. I love how it's all together in one location without having to drive all over town! You still get to see scenic views of the bay along with the wildlife that inhabit the area. Historical buildings, museums and commemorative statues help to increase your knowledge about the area in general, even if you didn't realize it has an interesting history, (good and bad)! That's what makes Cannery Row a mainstay for residents and tourists alike! read more
We walked the path from Fisherman's Wharf to Cannery Row and enjoyed the relaxing walk. We were unsure of the exact route so we referred to the trolley maps as we walked. As the buildings at Cannery Row came into site we were underwhelmed. We thought the area would be cooler than it was, it just didn't seem there was a lot going on. There are quite a few restaurants but we had just eaten a hearty breakfast so we didn't pay much attention to them and of course the aquarium is on the far side of the street. The views of the bay are pretty but overall it was nothing special in our opinion. read more

A lot of shopping and site seeing here. WE didn't do much, besides walking around the shop after a brunch. There was a nice beach area by all the eatery, which we stayed and picked up small sea shells for a minute there. Afterwards, we took few pictures around the area and left. read more
