I really only went here to go to one shop and then after I bought what I came for I decided to browse around the other shops that interested me. I dined at one of the restaurants here and I visited some really interesting shops such as: Spencer's Stationary (lots of beautiful cards and stationary), Lulu's Chocolates (tasty samples, kinda pricey), Consignment Carmel (lots of rustic furniture pieces), and The Treadmill (the awesome sportswear shop I came here for). I can conclude from what I saw the few times I did come to this "mall" that it's relatively pricey and definitely not for sales shoppers. It has a wide variety of shops from beauty salons, pricey apparel/shoe boutiques, moderate-priced restaurants, your average convenience stops (Safeway, Cvs/pharmacy, Bank of America, etc), etc. So if you have a specific need such as new running shoes from a knowledgeable staff (treadmill), high-end fashionable clothing (many shops), or a specific restaurant you want to try out then this is the place for you. If not, then you probably won't care to stop in here.

Quaint and lovely. I shop here to get away from the big mall crowds!

Loved the relaxed feel of the outdoor space but the retail owners/managers were far from relaxed. Don't linger.

I used to gravitate to this shopping center many, many times while living on the peninsula.

Knowing that this outdoor shopping center was 3 stories and had over 30 stores, I expected the area around it to be like a city center, with heavy foot and car traffic, lots of noise, and business advertisement. Instead, I wasn't sure if we were in the right place, because the neighborhood looked residential. The city planners/architects did a really nice job to implement this intention. The shopping center first opened in 1960, as an open-air courtyard style with a luxury department store, unheard of at the time for a town that small. Throughout the years, it hosted a major department store chain (Saks Fifth Avenue) as well. Now, in keeping with Carmel's intention to not have any national brand retail in it's city limits, the majority of stores/restaurants at this mall are local (though there are exceptions like Tiffany & Co, Anthropologie, and Brunello Cuccinelli). We got lucky and found free street a block from the center. Even on a Monday late morning, it was quite busy with tourists and locals alike hanging out in the main courtyard. A really nice feature was the large outdoor gas firepit that people were using to keep warm. We had come for a particular restaurant, but were informed that they were closed for the day for a private event (no signs or mention on their website)...I guess that's how this particular business rolls.

The center has three different levels with stairs in the middle and each side or if you desire an elevator, there is one on the end. During the weekend or summertime when it's busy, parking can be a challenge. There is a parking garage not far away if the street is full. If that is full, you may need to walk a bit. There is also some great places to eat such as The Flying Fish, a coffee shop, and a wine maker or two. In the center of the plaza, there is space to sit and enjoy the environment-just find some shade if it's warm!

She quickly learned about places that locals love when the tourists aren't out in force. It was really helpful to learn from her insider knowledge during trips to visit her. When I used to live in the Bay Area, Carmel jaunts were more frequent. Now that I reside in SoCal, it's not someplace we get to visit that often. As such, it was a treat to get a chance to get back to The Barnyard recently. Our pal suggested meeting at From Scratch for breakfast. She relies on their food, and the location in The Barnyard is an added plus. Parking is free, and there's a reasonable amount of it. Now that I'm older and my knees not as flexible or forgiving as they used to be, I became aware that the many undulating levels and staircases throughout the property add visual interest, but mobility challenges. We entered from the north and it took a bit of navigating to find the restaurant. As we didn't want to be late meeting our friend, we didn't fully take in all there was to see about the unique architecture and many flower beds and other landscaping features of the shopping center. We were there on a Monday morning and it didn't seem like a lot of the shops were open yet at 10:30 a.m. It was definitely on the quiet side at that day and time. I did note a few upscale boutiques for clothing and home decor. If the weather had been nicer, and more time free for shopping / browsing it would have been great to wander around after breakfast. I did love seeing the large rows of Pride of Madeira flower bushes on the perimeter of the property. They show off well in this center where many lovely flowers call home in a unique setting.
