I've come into contact with some really rude people that have shopped here and it's no wonder the people that work here are considered rude by customers, they have to deal with the rudeness all day long. Today there was a guy who's card was declined and he was giving the lady at the register a hard time about it. Turns out they found another form of payment and thought it was okay to cut in line in front of us. In any case, we don't know what the owners have been through that day or what stupid people have been in there before us that may have caused a scene. We were in search of some souvenirs since we were vacationing in Monterey for the week. I had been in search for a backpack for some time that wasn't a cheap looking drawstring backpack. This place had exactly what I was looking for. I just love my back pack! This place also has your typical Monterey sweatshirts and teeshirts and other little Knick knacks. Also walking distance to hotels on Cannery Row. They have the best prices in cannery row by far in my opinion. I also thought the lady at the cash register was very pleasant and we chatted for a bit. This shop is a little off the beaten path from Cannery Row, but closer to our hotel. It's a nice little shop with many gift ideas and souvenirs. Not a huge selection of items but some unique products that we hadn't seen at other shops. Prices are very reasonable, especially when they have sale prices going on! Joe K and I found several cute children's gifts. We bought a child's purse containing a stuffed baby sea otter nestled inside and sea otter T-shirt. I also splurged on a couple of decorative laser etched sea creatures of the ocean glass cubes that were on sale. The owner of the store who helped us was very nice and fun to talk to. We will most likely return for a repeat shopping experience during our next vacation endeavor. read more

We love this little store! We stop by every time we're in the area (over the last 10 years, I think.) My husband stocks up on caps, my son on sweatshirts, my daughter on tons of Sanrio products (squeal) and mom on beach/ ankle jewelry. They are very reasonable and you can find some nice finds. I know I've read the reviews of the lady that's, not so nice. Honestly, a lot of kids are just "let loose" in a packed store, so I can imagine owners might get a little stressed. I would totally recommend you stop by, but if you have young children, just be polite and watch them closely; it's a cute store for them too! read more

So apparently, as I'm looking at all the reviews, this place has long years of history for being rude. I'm so relieved that I did not see the lady that they were talking about. But other than that, I am not a local and I came to visit Monterey with my family with my daughter, niece & mother. What attracted us to the store was all the Hello Kitty stuff they had in the display window. Me and my family bought a few things from there, but as I left and got my stuff that I paid for, for me and my daughter, the man working at the counter just gave me my stuff with no bags. He didn't offer a bag and I was kind of just going to let it go until my mother had noticed that he didn't give me a bag. So she did ask him for me if I can get a bag that she had no problem paying for it. He told my mom that he could give me a black bag because I guess they were giving out hello Kitty bags which I've learned that my mother paid extra for. She was really upset about it that they didn't wanna give me a bag. I didn't think it was a big deal but reading these comments I see that they are intentionally rude. Not offering your customers a bag is really rude. Whether it was a simple plain black bag or a hello Kitty bag it would be nice if they offered their customer a bag instead of just giving them the items with no bag. I could get hundreds of plastic hello Kitty bags off of the SHEIN website. I see why this place runs off their customers even in 2026. These people are miserable business owners. If you do not want kids in your store by the way, do not sell things that kids would like because Monterey is a place where a lot of families like to visit. And I hope they read their reviews. If you find yourself in this store be wary of the owner/worker. My family of 5 came in to shop after a day at Cannery Row. My nephew picked a toy that had no price tag on it so I went to look for an employee to ask for the price. Instant attitude! She told me it the price is on the tag and that I didn't look hard enough. I held my tongue and told her there was no price tag. She begrudgingly goes to check the price. She then proceeds to follow us and then notices toys that fell on the floor from earlier in the day and immediately proceeds to accuse us of being horrible parents that didn't watch our kid. She seriously said "if it weren't for bad parents like you things like this wouldn't happen." Excuse me?!?! Not only were we not anywhere near that section, our 10 year old was quietly standing right next to us and never left our sight. We were disgusted by the behavior and put every single thing back. The employee snuck back into the back of the store to hide afterwards. I am always understanding of overworked and stressed out staff and don't take it personally. But honestly, there were no other customers. We were quietly looking and it's not like we were pawing through her things. We only touched and picked up what we intended to buy. This was a situation where I would've found satisfaction in matching her energy but instead we all just walked out. If you had any intention to support a local shop, there's plenty of others off Cannery Row to spend your hard earned money. Save yourself the undeserved mistreatment. read more

RUDE. Omg, I like the other reviewers I wish I could give ZERO stars!!!!!! Today we were visiting Monterey and decided to stop by this store. Things were priced pretty inexpensive and I picked out a sweatshirt and a purse. However, another purse I was interested in was on the top rack behind a few others. My husband politely asked the woman behind the counter if it would be possible for me to look at that purse. She just sat there and asked which one. He said it was at the top and to the back. She said, "I know that. There are 3 rows of purses at the top. Which one?" My husband walked away and I told her it was in the first row. She got the step ladder and climbed up. I told her which one I wanted and I asked if she wanted me to hold the ladder for her. Her response was very cold, "I got it. I told her I was just trying to help and she said. "I hear this stuff every day and it gets annoying." I couldn't believe how RUDE she was to me!! I handed her the purse back while she was still on the ladder, told my husband to put the sweatshirt back and I left the store. We were with our daughter who has a look of confusion on her face. When we got outside, we explained to her about Customerservice and politeness. And just because something is cheap, if they don't treat you with respect do not buy it. Walk away. NEVER give your money to people who are rude to you. Even if it's not cheap IT'S NOT OK. I never tell anyone to not go to a place BUT I'm making that exception here. To me, it was clear that it wasn't her first time being rude. Also, because things are inexpensive and many tourists come in their store she feels like she has the right to be rude because she'll still make money. Stopped in here (Visiting from Los Angeles) after going to the Aquarium and seeing Cannery Row. Very polite older woman working behind the cash register with a good sense of humor. What attracted me into this store was all the cute stuffed animals on display in the window. No, I'm not a big stuffed animal fan, I do like cute things. We walked in and the place is PACKED with little knick knacks. We walk around the store looking at everything. There was another couple in there also browsing around. No one greeted us when we walked in. I didn't see any employees anywhere. I was picking up and touching every little thing. I then noticed someone following behind me and rearranging everything I had just set down. OCD much???? I also saw her doing the same with the other couple. Um....ok. The cd that was playing kept skipping and she kept going to the back room to "fix it." Wouldn't you give up after the 5th try? After deciding on a few things, I went up to her and let her know I was ready. She was a total RUDE ASS BITCH! I can see why no one goes into her store. The owners practically push everyone away with their attitude. Save your time and money. Go elsewhere! These people obviously don't care for your money. How do they even survive NOT selling anything? They have good prices and a big selection of items packed in a small space. It's a good place to check out if you don't want to spend hella money on souvenir type stuff. Awesome little tourist trap! They have all the tourist gifts that are sold on Cannery Row, but a much larger selection at HALF the price! This is the best place to shop for hats and t-shirts. I don't know how often they have sales, but all hats and shirts were only $5 each! Great little $1-$2 section as well. We were able to stock up on fun little gifts for the kids there....never would've been able to afford this on "the Row." read more

My daughter was standing next to me looking and touching some magnets, that were at child level. My other two sons were looking at items standing next to me as well. The owners wife came over to my little girl, who is 3, and grabbed the magnets out of her hand and said to her sternly, " I told you kids not to play with these! You have to put these back!" My daughter put some of them back and then the woman, said,"...that is not where they go!" My daughter began to cry and the lady walked into the back of the store. I calmed my daughter down and walked over to the counter where the owner, Mike Halstin, was standing. As he started to ring up my item, I politely said that it might be a good idea to let the parents know if they do not want kids to touch something in the store. He proceeded to tell me he should not have to do that because he is not a babysitter. He then raised his voice above mine and told me I should be watching my kids and he is not he as a babysitter. I told him I was standing next to her the whole time and that he was being beyond rude. I told him I would never in a million years allow him to watch my children and asked him why they would have so many toys in the store if they do not want kids to come in? He proceeded to continue berating me and insulting me as I asked for my card back and told him I will never come back. I am a local and I informed him I will let everyone know in the community never to come here. He continued yelling his insults as we walked out, all in front of my kids, as I was trying to tell him he was beyond rude and had no clue what babysitting was or is. They need to learn how to run a business and not drive customers out of the store. These owners should be ashamed of themselves! These people are HORRIBLE and all the other reviews are right on. Please BOYCOTT this store. It is a sad insult to the Monterey Peninsula that they are even in the community. read more

I stopped by the shop really quickly with my boyfriend to look at their selection of mugs and magnets to buy as a souvenir from our trip to Monterey. Nothing really caught our eyes so we left empty handed. The store itself is a bit cramped and small. Product goes almost up to the ceiling. The man working at the store greeted us, which was nice. I have never written a review on Yelp, but like some of the others on this page we had a very disappointing experience at this store. This store has MANY items geared towards kiddos. My boys were SO excited to see fidget spinners in the window of this store and decided they would spend their own hard earned money to buy from this store owner. My boys are respectful young men and she treated them with absolute rudeness, attitude and disrespect. It was very disheartening to see a store owner not value their customer, no matter their age. These people are so rude. Went in to get quarters for the parking meter, asked very nicely if she had change for a dollar and she was very short with us and said 'try the change machine outside' a little put back we explained that out meter didn't take the coins that it gave out, so we asked if she could just spare us two dollars in quarters and she replied 'what if i don't want to give you quarters', we then responded by saying that she didn't need to but we would appreciate it. She gave us only a dollar in quarters when we gave her two dollars, so my husband said 'ma'am could we please have our full two dollars' she glared at my husband, so finally my husband said 'for a active duty service member would you give me my full two dollars?' She very blatantly responded with a 'HAH' handed us or quarters and we left. I have never been so shocked as to how we were treated that day. If you can't give out quarters just kindly say you can't, don't prance around on your high horse and be a rude prick. I wish i could give this place a -5 read more

Is 0 stars a possible rating ???? Should be, because I can't even give this place 1 star. My family and I visited this store on 8/17/09 and were treated horribly by the owner. We were trying on sweatshirts due to it being much colder in Monterey then we expected. Everything in there is very cheap, which is why we chose it. I didn't want to spend a bunch of money on a Monterey sweatshirt. Anyway, the owner is extremely rude to the point that I literally was in shock at the words coming out of his mouth. Quote "Obviously your mom didn't teach you how to use a zipper" After this, we decided to leave the store and not buy anything. I laid the sweatshirt, I had been trying on, down for the lovely owner to put it away himself, then he states "I bet that is what your closet looks like at home" My girlfriend then proceeds to ask the guy why he is speaking so poorly to us and he says "I don't take money from your kind honey" "I own this store and that is why I can kick you out" All because one of his cheap zipper sweatshirts didn't zip right! Anyway...just wanted to warn everyone out there. He is awful and doesn't deserve a penny from any customer. read more
