I contacted this company for an estimate, and scheduled an appointment for 11-12pm today. At 11:45, they still hadn't shown up so I called to confirm that they were still coming. The person who answered the phone said I'd never confirmed, to which I replied that I had an email confirming. She said she'd never received it, which sounded like a CYA lie. Attaching a screenshot of our exchange because receipts are important. If they can't even show up or be accountable in the most preliminary stages, imagine how much worse their service would be once they had your money? I should have looked more carefully at the reviews - there are some troubling ones in the filtered section, and almost all of the 5 star ones are from new Yelp accounts with barely any reviews. I had no problem with the sprawling ornamental cherry tree on the edge of our property and figured we could just cut the dead part off for firewood eventually, but my wife was insistent that it go so she looked up some local tree services and told me to call Affordable. I was impressed at how quickly they responded, showing up the day after I called to give an estimate. There was some confusion as he started writing the estimate for a peach sapling in the corner of our yard, and even started to advise me that any lawn service could just pull it out and throw it in the back of his truck. Of course they could. Why would I call a tree service for a sapling? Because people do. All the time. Because people are stupid. He did revise the estimate when I told him over the phone to look to his left, then to look up so he was looking at the correct tree. The day after that, they showed up to cut it down. There was a delay with them returning to grind out the stump, but when they did they accomplished that faster than my wife could finish a business call. For both parts of the job I was impressed at how considerately and carefully they were able to navigate our wet yard and avoid our garden and the saplings we did want. I got 6 quotes for cutting down 2 large 30 foot trees and 4 small 18 foot trees. The highest quote was 4 times what this company charged and most quotes were 2-3x as large. They worked efficiently and got the job done and cleaned up neatly after the removals. I don't know why any homeowner would use any other tree service other than Affordable Tree Service!!! One man who gave a quote mentioned that their "real" customers were commercial clients like big apartment complexes. So I guess they throw out ridiculously high estimates just to catch the occasional sucker. They might hook one third of the people they give estimates and it's pure gravy. But Affordable Tree Service seems to have mastered the skill and art of providing tree service to residential customers. And I am very thankful for that. read more

Out of three estimates, ATS was the cheapest for removing a large silver maple and three large elm limbs overhanging our house. The crew was very careful and didn't damage the building or shrubs, cut the wood into fireplace lengths, and cleaned up the yard afterwards. Really bad experience with this company. Long overdue review, we had work done in June 2017. Their prices were cheap but sadly I got what I paid for.The large branches we had them remove from our trees because they were overhanging the house dinged the house on the way down, denting the siding slightly and leaving lichen residue on it. These branches were also cut off improperly - they cut into the branch collar and now my big beautiful trees are likely permanently damaged as the scars have not healed properly at all. We also had several trees cut down and had agreed they'd leave half of the wood to keep costs down, but it was supposed to be left in an area pre-marked by the owner with string. Instead the workers removed the string at the start of the job and proceeded to leave the wood wherever they felt like it, making my yard messier. The owner said he would come back and pick it up, but was incapable of scheduling this and never ended up doing so, stopped responding to me. This has taken hours for my husband and I to clean up since they left huge stumps that are very heavy, and we have hours left to go. They also agreed to cut some of the wood into firewood, but all they did was cut large tree trunks into 2-3 ft stumps, and didn't chop them up into fire logs at all so they are useless to us. They took longer than they said they would, showing up late and working half days instead of full ones and wasting hours of my time. Finally, the owner was just so rude. He insults just about everyone, including his son and myself, and has a odd manner about him in general. Look elsewhere is my advice. read more

I had a Bradford pear tree split in half during a storm, with one half completely down and the other half still standing healthy. My only complaint is that the office seems to be a bit sloppy. After we called back and agreed to the quote, we were told the earliest a crew could come was 10 days from now (which was not a problem). The crew showed up 3 days later unexpectedly to do the work. Luckily we were home since it was the weekend, and we had no issue, but it was strange and we were a little concerned there might an issue with payment since we had not signed a contract. Excellent price, excellent job! I got three bids to take down 2 large (~65ft), dead silver maples in my back yard, grind the stumps and haul all away. Although all three bids were close to one another, Affordable's was the lowest. I then checked their ratings and customer comments on Yelp and elsewhere and decided to go with them. I can't say enough good things about the experience. They showed up on time, worked safely (including using ropes to safely remove four large limbs that had grown over my house and my next door neighbor's) efficiently, and were DONE in three hours. They used three trucks, a robotic stump grinder, and six staff. Really impressed at how their team communicated with each other and worked so safely yet efficiently. One tree was right up against a chain link fence and somehow they ground out the entire stump without a scratch on the fence (thanks for that extra effort, Ryan!) Highly recommended! read more

I'm a two-time customer of Affordable Tree Service. We initially needed a 30-40 foot evergreen cut down. It was too close to the house, leaning to one side, overgrown, and had utility lines running through it. I received estimates from about 5-6 different tree companies. All were professionals that I found here on this site. Affordable Tree Service gave me the best estimate *by far*. Some of the other companies' estimates were 3 times as much. Why? I have no idea! It's a tree. Yes, I know it can be a dangerous job. But it's not brain surgery. Some of the quotes we got were ridiculous. But they helped us to find Rick and his company! After cutting down the overgrown evergreen a couple months ago, we called him a second time to quote us on cutting down two more 30-40 foot cypress trees and to cut some fairly large limbs off a couple silver maples, and also to cut up and dispose a fallen tree from last winter's storms. Just as with the first time, Rick showed up when he said he would, spent some time surveying the work that needed to be done, gave us some good recommendations, and provided a simple breakdown of all the items on the estimate including options like grinding the stumps and mulching the tree/limbs. In addition to Rick's professionalism, his crew did a fantastic job. There were 5-6 guys, with all sorts of equipment ranging from large trucks, a skid-steer with lifter arms (not sure if that's the right term) to collect and carry the cut tree limbs and sections, and a large wood chipper. The crew worked like a well-oiled machine. While one guy was up in the tree cutting, another guy was operating the skid-steer to pick up the large branches and tree sections to take to the wood chipper, another guy was on the ground raking up the smaller bits, and another guy was operating the wood chipper. Very efficient. It was also nice to see that they took care to place large planks down so that the skid-steer didn't tear up the lawn as it moved from the tree to the wood chipper. We hired Rick to remove a large sycamore in our front yard. Unfortunately while removing the tree, a large branch fell and took out the power and fios line of our neighbor. Not good. Pepco came out and ended up having to cut our fios off as well. As I work from home this was a real issue and I had to go to rent temporaty office space. The tree should have likely been removed by a crane which would have mitigated what happened but really wasnt presented as an option to me (obviously more expensive). The tree branches that fell on our lawn had damaged the lawn and have required significant amount of sod and maintenance. I poor effort and I cannot recommend the service at this time. read more

The company followed up with me after three days later to come out and provide me with an estimate. I decided to give them the opportunity and allowed them to provide me with service cutting/pruning my trees. However, I called them back days later to use their service again to remove the tree stump and they scheduled the appointment for Saturday. Unfortunately, once again "no show". We had quite a great experience with this service, one of three we called for an estimate. We had some very old oaks that needed limbs removed and branches cut back. Although it took a while for them to get out here for the job -- mainly due to numerous rain delays -- once the crew arrived, they did a very thorough job and were very quick with their work. We had a very large tree next the road and that was dying and needed to be removed. They quoted us a very reasonable price to not only take down the tree and remove the debris but to ground down to stump as well. They did such a great job, the plants we had planted around the base of the tree survived the process. I will say the communication isn't perfect, but it certainly didn't affect the quality of work they put out. We didn't know they were coming when they did, I came home from work one day and the tree was gone. For me it was a happy surprise so I didn't care that I didn't have advance warning, but I do know there are some people that would have an issue with that. They came out the next day to give us an estimate: Very reasonable for what we needed done. We had a very large tree that had died. That tree was next to a wooden fence we share with out neighbors and there were very large branches hanging over the fence in to the neighbors yard as well. We were really concerned the fence would be damaged and/or large branches would fall in to the neighbors yard damaging their utility shed and children's trampoline. Because of this, and other existing landscaping, the tree and large branches couldn't be allowed to just fall to the ground The company sent 5 guys, all very professional and pleasant to deal with. Every single branch was lowered to the ground by rope, there was not a scratch on the fence, our yard (and the neighbor's) was cleared and left pristine. They even asked our neighbors for permission to go on to their property to clean up clippings. We simply can't say enough good about the job they did for us and would highly recommend them. It is very difficult for me to write this review, it's both good and bad. But I must say something. I used ATS once before, they did a great job,, start to finish. And a great quote out of 4 I received. So, I had another tree that needed to come down, I naturally called Rick. Andrew came out gave me a fair price on the additional tree and grinding all the stumps. The CREW arrives the day agreed on for the work, and the crew foreman refused to do the work for the agreed on price. Not Rick, the owner, not Andrew who quoted it, but the crew foreman, Carlos, decided he wasn't going to do that tree for that price. He so much as told me I wasn't telling him the truth. That ticked me off. Who runs the show at ATS? Perhaps they should call ATS Carlos Tree Service, because obviously he makes the decisions. I don't know about you, but I know that piece of paper the quote was written on would be used to make sure I paid the correct amount, it evidently doesn't mean anything after that. So, I told Carlos he might as well pack up and go. Then I called Rich. Unfortunately, I still have not heard back from him. So, no, I would not recommend ATS any longer. If you can't do business on a mans word AND a written contract, well, you decide. Now, I have to start the process all over again. Shame on you! read more
