My GLOWING recommendation for Affordable Home Works. May 23rd the upstairs toilet backed up and overflowed. Came downstairs to find the ceiling raining hard. Called homeowners insurance and they asked if the neighbors had plumbing issues, if the city was working on the streets, trees..."Ok I've seen The Incredibles cartoon I know what you're doing trying to avoid coverage. It's 8:30 am I called you first not the neighbors. The city isn't working in the area and all our trees were removed in 2014 from the last drought!" Oh no mam I'm just trying to get you the right adjuster... ". Do you have recommendations of companies you work with I don't know the process in 30 years this is my first call to insurance. No mam we don't. Called my beloved plumber but he was 2 weeks backed up. Found a plumber from my city Facebook group that was self recommending... (unhappy w them but that's another story) the company that plumber recommended Clear Coast did do an amazing job at the start with the clean up, calling daily getting in a company for asbestos removal and drying out the walls and ceiling. They told me on June 26 that I would be called July 5th by their builder to get that phase started. July 8th I call having heard nothing... July 20 he shows up, takes measurements and grumbles "Don't know why I'm here ..." I kept asking about adding upgrades that the insurance wouldn't cover and asking about when do we get to design. His reply was you can always try to get another contractor ... by middle of August he says he may be able to start at end of October. He then stopped replying to my texts. I'm frantic and called in AHW. The owner Michael Canahai heard my story. He didn't bad mouth the other company and instead told me what he and his company do to be the most efficient. He sent out Josh an amiable Project manager who looked over the site and stated that the insurance company was not in line at all of what the project of this size required and would be fighting w them about the bottom line. He noted all the upgrades I wanted above the damage coverage and gave me a reasonable estimate. I signed 2 days later. They fought the insurance company and DOUBLED the cost coverage from them. I easily concede I'm now at the point of crazy fear of Covid supply line delays etc. etc. and started texting 63 days to Thanksgiving. 58 days... They assured me and started exactly as they stated Sept 26 drywall delivered! Every time there was a snag my bottom line is complete is better than aesthetics. I wanted blue cabinets but not all pieces available so espresso was our second choice and in stock. The kitchen had a recess I didn't want so I trusted their knowledge on light placement. OMG they moved the island 6 inches north and the coordinating stove hood and the flow in the room is amazing.(Prior company told it couldn't be done?!?) Paint color, just take a sample of what we had and that's what we got. The workers were all hard working direct let's get this job done and fix any issues. I added a smart lock to use for when I couldn't be there and they always communicated when they were expecting to come by so I could lock the dogs out of the house into the backyard. This was our first large scale construction experience and even though it was forced on us by the damage we trooped along with the experiences. I'm still in complete awe at the results. We kept getting mice in our kitchen and couldn't figure out where they were coming from. My review is long overdue. Nov 2022 a horrific incident happened to my next door neighbors, which included a house fire. At 12:30am a call was made to AHW, thinking just leave a msg for the next day (Saturday), but was shocked when Mike answered the phone. He and his team were there at 8am to put boards on windows etc. AHW was then hired to do the gutting of the home. All household items, refrigerator, furniture, personal belongings, everything! I'll talk first about their work ethic, they all were extremely professional, honest, dedicated, energetic, and knew what needed to be done. Once the home was emptied out, they went to work on ripping everything down, walls, ceilings, cabinets, flooring etc. Right down to the studs. Everyday they left, everything was cleaned up on the outside, sweeping, hosing down etc. Now the human side to these amazing gentlemen. Again, this was a horrific incident. ALL the staff at AHW were compassionate, empathetic and extremely kind to the family. While cleaning out personal items, they'd put items aside that weren't damaged by fire/smoke/water, that were sentimental to the family. Example, photos, wall painting, Dads Notre Dame and Angels memorabilia, Great Grandma's grandfather clock etc. I believe other companies wouldn't have had the degree of compassion they had, and would have tossed these items. Most just want to come in, get the job done and leave. NOT AHW, they came with their hearts open and empathy shining through. I highly recommend AHW for all the reasons stated above: Professional, Honest, Dedicated, Ethical, Hard Working, Very responsive, Respectful; there's so many positive adjectives I can use for them and it still wouldn't be enough. If you don't believe me, do yourself a favor, if you're ever in need of this type of service, call AHW, I promise you won't be disappointed! "MUST READ" I hired Affordable home works for a remodeling project of my kitchen and bathroom. What started out as a remodel job turned into a remodel/restoration job.
