Tina was the optician who helped me. She was more than competent, and very personable. She made sure that my glasses fit my face to my liking, and were also comfortable. She asked me repeatedly if they felt okay, was very concerned, and interactive throughout the entire process. I will definitely be back to see Tina, and look forward to meeting the rest of the staff when I need an updated eye exam.

I recently had to reschedule an eye exam due to a family emergency. Despite calling the morning of the appointment to explain the situation, I was told I would be charged a "no-show" fee, and I have now received a bill for $50. This policy was never explained to me, nor was any grace extended for a long-term patient facing an emergency. This follows a disappointing pattern. I actually left this practice five years ago due to an unpleasant interaction with a staff member who was later terminated for her rude behavior. Unfortunately, the culture has not changed; the current staff remains dismissive and unprofessional. Save yourself the time, money, and aggravation by going elsewhere. You will find better prices and far more professional service at a major retailer like Walmart. It's a shame to see a local business treat twenty years of loyalty with such disregard.

They are overbooked and are bad with rescheduling appointments. Despite calling a month ahead to reschedule and despite calling twice to confirm appointments for my boys, they still told me I had cancelled. They also put a no show fee of $50 if you reschedule. The staff confirms appointments over the phone but their system will say otherwise. I'm very disappointed. The opticians here that dispense glasses are great though.

So I had been putting off finding a new optometrist for quite a while. I watched as the stack of disposable contact lenses grew shorter and shorter. Finally, I was down to my last pair and it had been too long since my last eye exam to just order new ones online. So I went looking for a local shop. I had a bad experience with a mall chain many years ago, so that ruled out a large percentage of options. I like to shop locally whenever possible so I punched Scotia Optometrist into my old pal Google and voilà I got Scotia Optical. The store is on a side street just off Mohawk Ave. It's small, but nice inside. The husband-and-wife team who own and run this shop are very professional and extremely nice. They were able to schedule my eye exam the next week, and I was able to get my contacts the same night. I've since been back to get prescription sunglasses. Their prices are way lower than anywhere else I've seen and they offer a ridiculous warranty on their frames and lenses. They have a good selection of frames to choose from and they can get even more than they have in the store. The coolest part of the whole operation is downstairs. These guys are one of very few places that actually make their own lenses. Most optometrists have to order your lenses from some far away location, these guys go downstairs and make them right there. How cool is that? Ask them to see it, it's pretty amazing, at least it was to me but I'm kind of a dork so...

I was having trouble seeing and they refused to give me a appointment because I had already been to the office within the past 2 months and didn't need to be seen so soon, (apparently clerical staff thinks they can diagnose patients over the phone), after several calls begging to be seen, they finally relented and gave me an appointment, turns out I had diabetic retinopathy, and had to be seen by a retinologist immediatley. They do repairs without question (our youngest needs them all the time) and in particular the senior optician is quite a delight. The prices, with insurance, are reasonable, and there's a pretty big selection. We have had literally dozens of pairs from this location now and have had only one defect from the lab-produced lenses, which was unfortunate, but thus far the exception. My main quibble with this location is the queue management -- you come in and check in and wait your turn, like anywhere, but it would be nice to have the option of getting an appointment for optical work. Only one of us has used the optometrist service in the past (and we're all on opthalmologists now for a variety of reasons) so cannot comment on the current state of that particular service, but they've always taken external prescriptions without question. Plus for the text-notifications on glasses arriving and the relative promptness of service from the manufacturing lab.
