I ordered some stuff online at their website for in-store pickup...their website claims "30 minutes or less"...NOT!!! After not receiving any confirmation email for almost 2 hours, I called up the store...after about 6 attempts some guy finally answered the phone. Zero customer service skills, just asked for my name even though I gave him the order number, and told me to call him back in 5 minutes so he could go check if item was in stock. Called him back in 5 minutes, no answer 3 times. In 10, no answer 3 times. Same at 15, finally at 20 he answers, and tells me he has it. I go over to pick it up, again zero customer service skills, not even a simple greeting or thank you, this chump acted like he was doing me a favor or didn't care if I ever came back. So, I won't. Oh, and the store was completely empty. I might've understood if it was packed and there was only one or two guys working their butts off, but this place was totally dead and empty. Now I know why. Funny, "Yelp" scammery. Advance Auto Parts is LIARS! I'll make sure to repost it at the right store. Nice try! My review starts at the Allston store, where they brushed me off for asking for an item by brand that they had in back but did not have the urgency to get for me, and told me to check back Monday, it's Friday. I want to clean my car this weekend! I looked for the next nearest store online, which is Somerville. I called the store and the phone rang for about a whole minute, finally someone answered. I asked for the specific item, do you stock it? Yes, he said. Do you have them in stock? Yes, he said. Will you set one aside for me, I am coming over! He said, of course. Sounds good, but it turned out they lied, and they didn't even feel bad. Somehow my earlier review from August ended up posted under the wrong store, I am sure I did not do that. They moved my post so you would not know how terrible liars they are. LESS THAN ONE STAR, you LIARS. I really want this specific item and did not want to just take something I haven't used before. I was in so much Friday afternoon traffic through Cambridge to get what I wanted to spend my money at this store to get. They don't stock it at Auto Zone, which is right by my work. When I got to Somerville, they were very helpful - also tons of people working, not very busy there. I said I had called and they helped me find the item, which was not on the shelf. I visited here after my car failed inspection, and was looking to pick up some advice and parts to make sure I could get my state sticker. As many other reviews here say the employees are very helpful and care about fixing your problem. Employees did a good job of asking me what my problem was, how I could fix it, and what my price range was for making those fixes. They had what I needed (pretty simple stuff) except when I went to the check out counter and asked the cashier if they had a better for my fob, as mine is dying. I was already dreading it because in the 5 minutes I was in the store I heard her argue with every single person she encountered. Unfortunately my encounter was no different. I told her several times the fob was for a 4Runner Limited and she proceeded to look up videos of 4Runners (not limited) and when I told her repeatedly it's not the same vehicle, she proceeded to tell me only the color was different. I never mentioned the color. I don't come to places to be argued with. Just a yes or no is all I needed in regards to my fob battery. While I'm sure they do have one, I'll be going literally anywhere else to get one. I don't go to a store to argue with a stranger. I just want to get what i need and get out. I didn't like service I had there. There were a whole bunch of guys just hanging around chatting up the employee - they weren't talking about anything interesting or intelligent either which was disappointing. They were wrong about all the electrical things they were discussing, but what do I know - I was in heels. Finally, after fighting through the conversation to the register a second time. I got the proper fuses for my car - which I had to do all the research myself, the booklet they had was totally outdated, and the employee was totally ignorant/unhelpful. I have a tendency to think it's the same with guys who work at electrical supply companies - couldn't cut it in the field. Is it the same with guys who work at auto parts stores? read more

I've been in here a few times and the staff has always been friendly, helpful, and in my experience- Knowledgeable. But the other day, Jan 22nd, they went over the top to help me! I bought a car battery online from them. I selected the proper store (#8632) to make sure they had it in stock for in-store pickup. I even called the store and spoke directly to an employee who was able to answer my several questions. Satisfied, I placed my online order and printed out a confirmation page. (I even got a promo/discount code and saved some $$, so that was a plus!) When I went into the store, they had no record of my transaction/pickup. When the employee and I reviewed my confirmation sheet, it turned out that somehow I placed my order at a different store! (#8868) Needless to say I wasn't too happy... The employee was very polite and professional during our entire exchange, and he informed me that I could "cancel" my online order, and just buy the battery in the store. That would require waiting several days for the online purchase to be refunded/credited back to my account. Essentially having me buy 2 batteries and then returning/canceling one. Since each battery was over $150, that was nearly $300 I would have to shell out until the first order was refunded/cancelled. While I was deciding what to do, a manager overheard us and saved the day! He called the other store, verified my order, and gave me a battery from his inventory. He said they would do an internal store transfer and that the other store would mark my order as complete- including returning my old battery for the CORE CHARGE refund (+$20) because I swapped the battery out right there. There was an employee who was in the middle of doing another battery install/swap and I saw that he was doing a very thorough job, taking his time, making sure it was done correctly. (Full Disclosure: I swapped out my own.) I didn't get any of the employee's/manager's names, but they were all awesome. (5 STARS for them!) The 4 Star is because of the online kerfuffle. I didn't think I needed to double and triple check my order, since I knew I had selected the proper store to begin with. I would have been nice if each store could see all the orders or do have the ability to swap order pick-ups between stores. But, hey, sh*t happens... read more

I was tempted to give a lower rating but overall the experience was good and the man who helped me was a nice guy. This rating has to do with an in-store order pick-up. I ordered four items online at 1:05 pm (according to my confirmation email) which is supposed to be ready for pick-up in 30 minutes. I arrive after work at 5:30 (4-1/2 hours after ordering) and only then do they pull my order. This is in between serving one other customer at the counter and answering three phone calls. Apparently the other employee(s) out back could not be bothered to get up and answer the phone to help out their kind colleague out front (I saw at least one other employee on site). Twenty minutes later I leave with my order. The person who took care of me was nice enough but I don't think they understand the concept of in-store pick-up orders and the need to have them ready for you before you arrive. Disappointing first experience. I did like the store and their prices are quite reasonable. Nice location with plenty of parking. read more

Con - went to find the book to look up my oil filter - it wasn't there. I spent a few minutes looking around (obviously in some state of confusion) with no one offering to help me Pro - i went to the front desk and asked them what the deal was - they promptly looked it up and gave me the number Con - they didn't have any on the shelf Pro - i went back to the front desk, told my new friend what the deal was, and he promptly told me 'we should have four' and went in the back - he was able to retrieve my oil filter. All-in-all, a mixed bag. The store should be setup better, but the customer service i received was pretty high-quality. Auto-parts store employees tend to be either really good, or frustratingly bad - thankfully this Advance Auto Parts seems to employe the latter. read more

My car battery died in March. Since this place was literally in my backyard, I bought a battery from them. 3 weeks later, my battery died again...according to AAA, it was a faulty battery. Since it was a Honda battery, it may have been a Honda issue and not an Advance Auto Parts issue, so I'll give them that. The battery had a warranty on it, so I call them and ask if I can bring the car in for a battery swap. They say they will try to look up my receipt; I say I have it with me. They don't accept this because they need to find it in the system and I end up buying another battery from the Honda dealership just so I can drive my car. I don't think it's fair that a glitch in their records cost me another battery (especially considering that I had the original receipt). read more

I went into the store on 7/28 after work because my ac stopped working and a friend suggested stopping in and getting a certain product for a quick fix. Clearly I don't know much about cars because I forgot what it was called... But I went in and told Kevin G at the front what I was looking for and he was SO helpful. I was told to get a slightly different product and Kevin told me why it would be smarter to get a different product and explained why very well. I bought it and didn't know what to do so he had me pull around and helped me by explaining what to do. Great experience. Staff went above and beyond what I expected, and really helped. I walked in to buy a replacement bulb for my headlight. The guy quickly looked up the part, walked over and found it for me, then actually installed it in my car. That was a big surprise to me. It actually took over 10 minutes to replace the bulb, b/c there were some problems, and it was dark out and hard to see. The guy ( I think the owner) called another staff member out to help. So I had two people working on it. I don't know if they always do this, but I was very appreciative of the effort. Saved me a lot of time. I will go here from now on for my auto parts. read more

I just wanted to write a stellar review from my experience today. I went in needing a battery and windshield wipers to get ready for the winter muss and fuss. A friend said that Advance would install these things for me, so I gave a call and talked to Jarien (I hope I've spelled his name right) When I got there I spoke to the guy at the counter who remembered talking to me. He helped me pick out the right components (and not just the most expensive parts, but the best ones for my car.) We went outside to install my new parts. Another worker came out and he taught her how to install the wipers. He is a natural teacher, pointing out the little indicators so easily glossed over.. (And now I know too ;) Then he set about to take my old battery out and put my new one in. There was a lot of corrosion so it wasn't easy to get the old one out, but he worked through it and got the new one in. He made sure it was starting properly and had me start the car a couple of times. It made my life easy and now my car is starting perfectly and my new wipers, Ooh la la. I had a great experience here today. I bought a battery online for in store pick up and install but did not realize that it was not a good option for my car. Jessica F was the team member who was helping me out. She was great at explaining why I needed a different battery and helped me out so that I got an even greater discount than I had on the first battery. In the end - I had a BETTER battery for an even LOWER price than I had originally paid! Oh - and she also installed the battery in my car - in the pouring rain. Five stars for sure. read more

I've been going to this place for years and, like any place, it's had it's ups and downs. Generally the staff is fairly knowledgeable and helpful. They aren't necessarily there to fix your auto troubles, but they tend to have some pretty good advice for me. I could see how the other reviewer had a bad impression of the "conversation" she had to fight through. Car people just like talking about cars. However, they should be more aware of waiting customers. My latest trip was for a free alternator/starter/battery check. This was done quickly and while the results didn't tell me much, they gave me good direction on what I should do next...have the mechanic (who put the alternator in) test the voltage regulator in the alternator (and to threaten them with the Attorney General if they gave me a hard time). The mechanic (30+ miles away) told me this morning to have AAuto call them with my info and AAuto can do the test for me without me having to drive back to the mechanic. Keeping my fingers crossed. read more
