OK, I know this seems to be flying in the face of many other reviews, but I feel compelled to jump in to review ADT. We have been a customer for 13 years and been consistently pleased with the service. I will grant there are less expensive options out there, but we have gotten consistent high quality. One thing I'm aware of is that you have to be careful if you're dealing directly with corporate ADT or a 'reseller' / 'distrubutor'. There are authorized partners allowed to use the ADT symbol and sell installation services, with ADT then doing monitoring. It is possible you get over sold or have issues this route. From our first installation through servicing we've been dealing with corporate ADT directly 800-ADT-ASAP. Our home was pre-wired for service and we had some extra features added. The monthly monitoring has been consistent, and our price each month includes repair service. We've had them out over time to fix things, or replace old smoke detectors and they have always done it at no additional charge, and we've been able to schedule repair appointments same day or next day which is reassuring if you have an issue. They do try to creep up the monitoring fee over time and we've called since we are no longer under a contract, and pushed back saying we would not accept an increase and they will generally hold the cost steady. We have not signed up for the web enabled services. I'm old school, feel it is harder to hack closed loop systems. Since we've not had any quality of service issues, I'm giving 5 stars. read more

WHAT CROOKS! DO NOT SECURE YOUR HOME WITH THIS COMPANY. I signed a contract for a set amount and they did not honor the price and raised the monthly cost 1/3 of the way through the contract period. Of course, when the government moved me overseas and I needed to cancel the service, they piled on another $500 fee because I did not honor the terms of the contract. Unbelievable. Hypocrites and crooks. Who does business like this today? You sign a contract with them that they can arbitrarily change but when the consumer seeks to modify it, they make you pay. Wow. I'm done with ADT and their DC contractor, Safe Streets. They made no attempt to retain me as a customer. I still own the home and will return there. No way ADT will ever get my business or will ADT ever be retained to secure the 3 other properties I own. ADT's arcane, money-grubbing business practices need to be investigated. At a minimum they've lost one revenue stream and I will share my experience with every homeowner I see with one of their signs on the lawn. read more

Whatever you do, DO NOT sign a contract with ADT. They only do 3 year contracts which is absurd in a city like DC where most people move every 1-2 years and they refuse to let you end service. I was really happy with ADT while I had service. I live in a rough neighborhood and it made me feel safe. I loved the ADT Pulse app and being able to control my lights and alarm from the road. I had a few issues with faulty sensors, but they were prompt in repairing. When it came time to move is when I had serious issues. ADT is forcing me to move service to my new condo since I'm only a year into my contract. I'm moving from a townhouse into a condo that does not allow for any installation of things like wires, satellites, etc. (basically no drilling). I was not going to get Wi-Fi (I work all the time and basically don't need Wi-Fi at home since I have unlimited data with my cell phone carrier), so ADT is telling me they can't actual set up service at my new condo (since my only options are a Wi-Fi enabled system or a drilled in system). The result? $875 in CANCELLATION FEES. $875!!!!! Like really, WTF. That is half a month of rent. That is a year of car insurance. $875 because my condo doesn't want me drilling in the wall and installing equipment we don't need. I sent an email from my landlord to their customer support and they were not helpful. They basically told me I'd have to get Wi-Fi just to continue the wireless service. So my options are to pay $100/mo (Wi-Fi + ADT) for the next two years OR pay the $875 fee. Props to you, ADT, for sneaking in the three year contract. Really great business model. I would not recommend anybody ever go into contract with ADT. Buy a baseball bat, a taser and some pepper spray for a security system. read more

I got bamboozled into upgrading my alarming system after what I originally asked for couldn't be done because the information given to me was incorrect..I even paid a $100 down pymt (which I still have NOT been refunded back for that either) so while they were there that's when they explained to me about the upgrade.(thus happen in mid July btw).. I got the upgrade last thur on the 4th after they had the reschedule my original appt...the tech installed the new pad, explained everything to me and left (oh yea! I paid $100 down pymt on that too)..the tech left, not even 24hr later the system crashed, completely black.. called customer service, she and I tried to rest it and nothing.. they rescheduled a new tech to come out today (which he was late btw) he told me the last tech installed it incorrectly, the wires were crossed and could have fried the system and possibly start a fire. I called for a credit for my inconvenience and having to leave my house unsecured for a week, maybe be compensated with a key-fob. They gave me $14 (really). I asked about a key fob with the original tech, he told me a price and they would not have to come back out and I be charged to be programed.. when I called today for my compensation they said to order a key for there's a fee to have them come back.. this is very upsetting and my life was in danger not from lack of security, but also from faulty installation and think I'm worth more than $14. Haha! I've escalated my services with ADT, you know when a corporate company is horrible when they delete your complaints. 1. Took 5 times for them to properly install 2. Technicians are rude 3. Sales rep lies 4. Escalation show no sincere empathy to you 5. I've called and had 2 technicians come out to resolve my alarm going off randomly (get multiple calls a day for alarm failure, and then had the fire alarm go off- which they accused us of course) 6. It's been over a month and can't even use my alarm system properly 7. The technicians accuse you for the alarm having problems 8. They only care about your money. 9. They can't own up to their mistakes and allow criticism to be on there page, then you would end up signing for their services without true and honest recommendations. 10 ADT sucks. read more

I am extremely displeased with the service I received from ADT. I just purchased my first home in October 2020 and decided to go with ADT for my home security system. I had the following requests: door sensors, a doorbell camera, a camera over the garage, and a front door keypad. When I called to make the appointment I was told it wouldn't be a problem at all to install all of those requests and they threw in a free smoke detector. I was not told that wifi was needed in order to install any of those items. The ADT technician (Brian, 6ft, slim, African American) came two days after I moved in which was prior to my appointment with Verizon (the company I went with for internet). He informed me that he could not set up the cameras or the keypad without wifi so he would do the sensors now and come back to do the outstanding tasks once my internet was installed. He stayed at my home for 3+ hours to install the window/door sensors and smoke detector. I was able to get wifi installed the next week so I called ADT to have someone come back out and finish the job. I was shocked to find out the following: I didn't need wifi in place to install the keypad, instead of leaving the job open he closed the job meaning this would now be an add on instead of finishing a prior job which is an added expense, had he put the keypad in on the first visit I would've gotten one of the cameras for free, and that the total for the three "add ons" I was requesting would be an additional $900 to the $500 I already paid. This $500 was in addition to $850 ADT covered in an online special they were offering. This means I spent $1,350 for sensors only. I specially asked Brian if there would be any additional cost and he said no. I also found out that he sold me the most expensive door and window sensors without even giving me the other price options. I have glass doors and windows. The sensors I have monitor the door opening and also detect if someone has broken the glass. Had I known that there were other sensor options I would not have put the most expensive shock sensors on every door and window in my house. I live in a townhouse. I do not need shock sensors on my windows on the third and fourth floors. I have since dealt with three other ADT technicians and a corporate representative (Jessica Employee Number 23051) all of which told me I "got screwed", it's not right that he didn't put the keypad in on the initial visit, and he should not have marked the job as done. I was also told there was nothing anyone could do about the price because he was working for a third party company (Defender) and now that the job was marked as closed I have no choice but to pay additional add on fees. Jessica informed me that I could've declined the smoke detector and applied the credit for the cost of the smoke detector to one of the cameras. I still would have had to pay for the camera but the cost would have been significantly lower. So again, had he installed the keypad when he was supposed to I would've gotten one camera for free and one notably discounted. Two of the techs felt very badly for the situation I was in and encouraged me to buy cameras from OTHER sources (Viviant or Ring). They offered to come back and set up the cameras for me free of charge. Although that was a kind offer I declined because I wanted all my equipment to be processed through ADT so I could access everything through the app. To add insult to injury, during the initial 3 hour visit, Brian failed to install the sensor correctly for the front door. The magnet and the sensor were not aligned. This means that for the first two months of my stay, the one entrance that a burglar could enter through was NOT secure. So I paid for equipment along with two monthly payments (only three dollars less than if I did have the cameras... another gut punch) and someone could have entered the property through the front door without the alarm going off. I feel as though I was completely taken advantage of but I am stuck in this contract for several years. The solution I would be happy with is to add the cameras and keypad on for the price I would've paid had he kept the job open to begin with. I am not trying to get anything for free. I just want it to be fair. read more

Despite constant low battery calls, which were frequent and battery never needed replaced... when we had an unexpected intruder a handyman who had returned after he left situation, police were called and there waiting with him. My problem and reason for the one star review is we moved out of our long term rental and were in the process of buying new construction I notified ADT to shut down service. I have since notified them repeatedly, phone email, and even had emails and texts confirming it had finally been cancelled. Well it's been six months account still open and I am getting monthly charges still. Their solution is to just credit me on a new account. Numerous ADT people didn't do what they said they would do regarding my account, I want an alarm system for the new home... I am weighing to take my business elsewhere this is unacceptable. read more

I got ADT for my daughter when she moved off campus in college last year. Her lease is up and the owner is selling the house. They do not allow alarm systems in the apartment where she is moving, they don't want drilling in the walls. ADT will not let me out of the contract, I have to pay $1,300 dollars for the early termination fee! I was on the phone for over an hour with 5 different people and they will not give on this and it's not even my fault. I can't believe they won't even budge at all to help me out. We had ADT for several years, and they were OK. Expect steep increases from year to year, be aware of this when you sign, as most of their offers require a three or two year contract. I contacted them to see what they could offer us for our new house. The supervisor who took care of my call was a disaster. He kind of threaten me: "you better be proactive than reactive", "better putting your system in place right now than calling us when something has happened..." I have a new ADT System just installed about 3 weeks ago. It worked for the first week and half and now it is not. I was advised I could use the ADT app to monitor my system. We upgraded to add cameras. When I go to review "videos" all I get is a still shot.A freeze frame. And in some cases, the picture is even too late and I can't see who came to the door. I don't even get the pic. I'm getting too many excuses and no one helping get this resolved. I was told to use a computer instead and clear out my cookies. Really?? This is technical assistance? This is not the product/services I signed up for. I wish I never signed up at this point. I will be taking further action if it's not resolved soon. Save your money read more

This is for an alarm system in Alexandria, VA. There are reviews for several ADTs in the Northern VA area - I'm not sure which one to put our review under. I originally called ADT because I thought they were an established, well respected, quality company. I'd looked up reviews on their alarm systems and they were highly rated (turned out these were paid reviews, not objective ones). So, I called to see if they would monitor a system already installed by another company. I was assured that they did. We'd been having problems with the current system and needed someone to figure out what was wrong, and to switch the monitoring over to them. I was told someone would come out to diagnose what was wrong with the current system. If any parts needed replacing, I was assured there would be no cost for the equipment - there would only be a $99 installation fee. Monitoring would be $36 per month. Nothing was said about being tied into a monitoring contract. Evidently ADT has an arrangement with a bunch of local alarm companies to provide service, installation, monitoring, and someone from a company called Defenders, Inc. dba Protect Your Home came out the next day. They never bothered trying to figure out what was wrong with the current system, but immediately began taking it out and installing a new one. When I questioned what they were doing, I was told the current system was old, parts were jury-rigged, and that it needed replacing. Again I thought, this is ADT - I trust them. I was told everything would take around an hour and a half. After programming the "new" keyboard, however, the gentleman couldn't get it to work. He then took it out and replaced it with another one, which another man asked if it was new! So, I started wondering if they were installing used equipment! After a total of four hours (!!!), they handed me a bill for $2,800 and told me monitoring was going to cost around $50 a month and we'd be tied into a 3 year contract. When I told them what the lady on the phone had told me - that the equipment would be free and monitoring would be $36 a month - he said, "oh, that's for a basic system - you needed more than that." I'm not sure what to call this - false advertising, bait and switch? By then it was 10 p.m. and everyone was exhausted, so they left. The next morning I went online and discovered the reviews I'd read had been paid reviews, not objective ones, and ADT and Defender, Inc. actually had extremely poor ratings and customer feedback. I found another system that was less than 1/4th their cost, so I faxed in the right to cancel notice I'd been given. I also tried calling them to let them know I was doing so, but there wasn't anybody there on the weekend! I left them a voicemail and told them I was cancelling, that I had faxed the form in and to come out and take their equipment back out of the house. They did come out within a couple of days to remove the system, leaving screws in the walls and scattered around the floor. I'll be interested now to see how difficult it is to get the money back we'd paid them..... read more

I am at my wits end with ADT!!! They will not process my termination of services no matter how many times I call! The service is expensive, the equipment breaks and they make you try to repair it yourself. But that pales in comparison to the experience of trying to quit. The last time I called the first person I spoke with was really rude and hung up on me. When I called back the person spoke with me a long time and then said only a different department could approve a termination. I got nowhere with her supervisor. Then I spoke with the other department and they said they would terminate my account t but couldn't give me a confirmation email. Two weeks later I got another bill. The time before that I thought I successfully terminated and even have a confirmation number but they didn't terminate and the phone call notes say we discussed it and I decided to wait which is a complete outright lie! I plan to call the BBB and make a stink every way I can think of. I've never had this much trouble quitting anything in my life! I know the company is tanking but this is ridiculous Update: I did email Eileen and was ultimately successful in quitting. I had another bump in the road for another account but emailed Eileen again and she took care of it. read more

Tried charging me $1000 for my "free equipment." They promise you the world over the phone and then you pay $100 to secure an appointment and $300 for installation. I took off work today for an appointment at 8am with a tech, nobody showed up and after being in hold a half hour, they said, oh your appointment is for tomorrow and I said No, I'm quite certain it was for today. This is the second time they've done this. When I called yo say my security cameras are not working, the guy asked me if I had troubleshooted it. To their customer service , I can understand with what you are saying. I hope after your company read the bad reviews you have upgraded your product. The false alarms I kept getting was in the middle of the night and when we weren't home. Needless to say to get woke up 1,2 3 in the morning to the fire department in front of your house was a total nightmare. You should be able to pull up my account and read about all the problems I kept having over and over again. They replaced all the sensors, main control board, ect.. ect. I gave up. I did HVAC, REFH, chemical feed pump, water softeners for 43 years and retired. I have never in my career ever seen failure after failure on a product like this on electronic components. I may come back later on, but their are more negative reviews a lot more than just here. Waited for three weeks for an installation from ADT. They called day before to confirm the appointment and sent a text for ETA one hour prior to arrival. However tech called from outside our home to say that due to the rain he would be unable to insta the three cameras to the home. At time of arrival it had not begun to rain and no one from customer service warned us that their techs do not install while it's raining. The rain had not begun and it was overcast at best. It just tells us that ADT did not want the job even though we were set up with a five year contract. read more

I had a system installed in my apartment and when I moved to my home had my service transferred. They claim their contracts are 'non-transferable' which okay fine, however, when the technician came to install my equipment I specifically asked about the terms of my contract and I was told my contract would be for 2 years. Well I called ADT today and yeah my contract is for 3. Of course when I told them that was not what I was told, they said, "well your contract says....." Always read fine print and I absolutely do not recommend that anyone use ADT or its services. read more

I want to add to ADT's 1 star reviews for their awful response to problems and my awful experience cancelling my account. I have a 9 year old system that has had regular problems with failing sensors and a long obsolete key pad. After months of insisting on "fixing" the system in multiple site visits rather than replacing it, I called to cancel the service. They finally offered to upgrade the system... too late. To make matters worse, they refused to send a tech to remove their system, parts of which are hard wired. So after years of marginal responsiveness to various problems, I'm left with a useless hard wired alarm system that they refuse to remove. Thanks, ADT. read more

I've had the service for less than 5 DAYS and I'm already regretting my decision that I chose ADT to secure my home! They're CROOKS and ripping me off the first week in! If I could leave one star I would please don't make the mistake I did and get this expensive good for nothing home security. I have there iQ panel system with the WiFi connection and it suppose to connect to your cellphone. This system does absolutely nothing. First off its not loud enough so if doors or windows down stairs are opened I can't hear them down stairs. The sensors are cheap a couple days after the install one of the sensors came off on its own triggered the alarm and almost scared the shit out of me. I sometimes walk in my house and the system does not trigger at all. I called to complain and I get absolutely nothing as far as customers service. Outside of them telling me what I should do to reset the system once I did it nothing happend and the representative MAC hung up on me after I told him the system didn't reset as it should. I made an appointment for an estimation on my house security system. The tech called on the appointment day way early when I was unable to answer the calls. I called him back an hour (at 3pm) before appointment time (@4pm). He didn't answer, I called couple times. Then I call customer service to find out what's going on. The prep said I have to give them 3 hours from the appointment time to get here. What in the world is the appointment for nowadays with these service? Who have time to wait for this? We live in Rockville and were recently installed. So far not impressed at all: 1) The Technician didn't know about a basic feature that I was pretty sure they offered based on all the other alarm systems we've had. He told me they didn't offer it and I only found out he was wrong because I had to call customer service about something else he screwed up (for which he had to come out a second time) and happened to ask. If I'd listened to him, I'd have thought that my ADT system didn't offer a key feature that every alarm I've ever had offers. 2) Don't fall for the 100.00 VISA gift card scam. If you want it, you have to pay 5.95 for it and send them a cashier's check (which you can only get by going to the bank) or a money order (who even uses those any more?). I suspect they make it difficult so you don't bother with the hassle. Offering a rebate then making it hard to redeem is a shady move and not the best way to get off on the right foot with a new customer. 3) We recently had our first false alarm and they called to make sure everything was alright. I told the rep that everything was fine and she was about to hang up when I pointed out that she never asked me to give our "all clear" password. She got annoyed and asked for it, but I got the feeling she didn't bother to confirm it. It didn't exactly make me feel like we're in good hands. Had a beeping issue, called the usual number and got a "Company X now ADT" answer and spent two days while they pretended to fix this at HQ...then was told not possible and "local company" would call us to send technician (by then it was weekend). Of course, local company did not, so called and insisted (now a week had gone by since first had problem)...then a very apologetic ADT person said local company's first available date was 8 days later -- a total of two weeks since I first called about problem. I've been getting robo-calls from ADT on my do-not-call number. This is agrivating.

I received an advertisement from ADT and called regarding having the system installed in May of 2017. Can't stress enough how I have regretted that decision. First of all I thought I was working with ADT for installation but was later informed my installation was provided by a sub contractor -- Defenders and all my complaints had to be referred back to them. Geez, most reliable companies that use sub contractors are responsible for the work performed -- not in this case. As of September, 2017, I have had technicians to my home 8 times since the system does not work properly--trouble light comes on constantly and the alarm goes off for no reason. None of the technicians have been able to fix the problem so since that time, I have stopped having them come. Wait times when calling for service are so long I think they hope you hand up and then having to take time off from work to meet the techs here is ridiculous and costs leave time and pay and they never seem to resolve the problems. My alarm has sounded 10 times for absolutely no reason and none of the techs can figure out why. In Oct. of 2017 while holding forever for service I noted that the recording says 6 month money back guarantee -- Yeah right-- Asked when connected if that was correct since I was only 5 months into my contract and she said if you have the same problem 3 times that qualifies to have the system removed, contract voided and your money back. I DID HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM 3 TIMES so she said I had to contact the subcontractor Defenders so I did. I was told the Service Manager, Herbert Smith, who would be able to authorize voiding the contract would come to my home and meet with me. HE DID NOT COME BUT SENT A SECURITY ADVISOR (whatever that is) instead. He had no idea of why he was meeting with me and was not authorized to discuss having the system removed. Looked like Herbert Smith passed the buck to some poor guy who had no idea of what he was encountering. He had no idea of how to solve the problem either and suggested putting in a 'REPEATER' that might solve the problem -- NOPE IT SURE DID NOT SOLVE ANYTHING SINCE I AM STILL HAVING THE SAME ISSUES. I don't feel confident in the system at all and am sick of making calls and holding forever and taking time off to having reps come here who can't figure out what the problem is. I THOUGHT ADT WAS A REPUTABLE COMPANY BUT THEY SURE HAVE PROVEN NOT TO BE. THEY DO NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR PROMISES AND DO NOT CARE WHETHER THEIR CUSTOMERS ARE PLEASED WITH THEIR SERVICES. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE AND WANT THIS SYSTEM OUT AND MY CONTRACT VOIDED SINCE THEY DID NOT SUPPLY WHAT THEY PROMISED IN THEIR PROMOTIONS. read more

If you are planning to get service with this company please do yourself a favor and avoid yourself a headache... Their technician did not install our equipment correctly and then they wanted to charge us to have someone come out and check it. 2. They billed us more than what we were quoted for 6 months until their system could "fix" the issue. 3. Last month they changed over their system causing a billing glitch so this month there were three transactions for my monthly bill, when I called to get it corrected they claimed I was behind and the system was just catching up. The ADT system is far from secure. After spending hundreds of dollars to have cameras, sensors and control panels installed, my alarm began automatically disarming itself - after being armed (often in the middle of the night). ADT has been unable to rectify the issue. I honestly feel less safe with the system than I did without it. I would NOT recommended. read more

They would not offer me the same packages that a new customer would receive so I decided to go with another company. This took time from my busy schedule but I felt that I needed to do this as I was not being valued as an ADT customer. I called to cancel my service in May 2019. I continued to receive bills until I called again in August 2019. They apologized and saw that I cancelled my system in May and was told that I would not be responsible for those charges. I December2019 I received another bill for $60.28. I called in January 2020 and was told that it was a mistake and not to worry that it would be cancelled once again. Today I received a letter from a Collection Agency telling me that ADT has placed my account with them since I owed them $60.28!!!! and that if I didn't pay this it would be submitted to a credit reporting agency. Once again I called ADT and took 30 minutes out of my Saturday. I had to explain the situation all over again. I was again told that this was a mistake and that they would contact the Collection agency and let them know. Why do they treat their customers like this? I will NEVER do business with ADT again and I will tell anyone that is considering them for service to RUN AWAY FAST. I will be contacting the Better Business Bureau with a complaint. I am in sales and if my company treated their customers like this we would not be in business. Now I need to contact the Collection Agency and spend more time dealing with this on my day off!!! We've had a security system in our house for 42 years, and ADT is our fourth security company. Their system was installed five years ago, employing our existing switches and wiring, with new controllers. It's been very satisfactory. We have had alarms a few times over the past five years, and ADT has always handled them well, promptly calling us for instructions, and doing exactly as we advised. I wouldn't dream of switching to another company now. read more

I just found out that there was a connection issue between my system and ADT that apparently has been going on for the past 5 months! Although i am paying for monitoring services i was just made aware of the problem. When i talk to customer service they just say that its in the terms of the contract that im responsible for testing it so they cant do anything. Its absolutely infuriating because if something had happened i have been paying for ADT to monitor and notify the police/ fire department but they wouldn't have because of the connection issue. It should not have taken that long to realize there was a problem! Needless to say I cancelled my contract with them. read more
