I woke up, decided to cut my thinning hair. I asked AI to search salons in NYC. I was visiting from California and had no idea where to go. To be transparent, I was looking for a fade but still wanted to look feminine. I came across this salon. Nef happened to be available so I said a prayer and booked the appointment. I was less stressed because I was able to still cancel the day of, in the event I came to my senses and decided to head to Harlem for braids instead. I have went to Adrian 2 times and I have seen for myself that he is gifted at what he does. I can go somewhere for way cheaper but they won't take the time and care that he does in cutting hair. Man, THIS IS THE SPOT!!! So thankful I trusted friends recommendations and 'my gut' to go check out Adrian Fanus! I was in NYC visiting family and wanted to take my 12yr old son, along with his cousin, for his first "barbershop" haircut, so chose AFG. Was a little unsure if I had the right place upon arrival, because the front door is a little obsure. Upon entry, you walk up a couple of flights of stairs to the barbershop and then walk thru a door to be greeted by the receptionist. The spot is a very professional salon - clean, trendy and with nice aesthetics. Adrian himself also greeted us and told me he'd be right with us. We went to the waiting room which was nicely decorated with lounge type furniture and big screen TV. Adrian cut my son and Troy cut my nephew. Both exhibited a very professional manner, with a familiarity that made you feel like family! Once the haircut process begun, they both went to work and were extremely attentive to the request we'd made, as well as, the detail of the cuts. Throughout the haircut, the conversations with Adrian, Troy and Tim flowed very naturally, with amazing music selections playing in the background. I was particularly impressed with the level of professionalism and thoughtfulness of the whole experience and could tell that it was a deliberate reflection of Adrian's 'meticulous' nature. I'm very happy that my son was able to have the AFG experience. I was impressed with all their elements; from the ease of booking online to the fifteen minute wait time (versus a two hour wait at a typical barbershop). Parking may be an issue but I was able to find one after searching for five minutes. AFG is a physical hidden gem; don't expect a a grand, lavish exterior (you will see that inside) but expect authenticity; a black, iron gate door with miscellaneous stickers as a decoration. You will know you are at the right place because 497 is listed on the door. They are located on the last (top) floor. You will go up two flights of stairs and see a white door. You can knock or turn the knob (it's open). Adrian greeted us with a smile along with the receptionist. She verified our booking and guided us into the waiting room. The waiting room feels like a living room; very chill and comfy. The television was off but there is one sofa and two recliners with a table on the side with two chairs. The receptionist offered us drinks as well. The wait was truly fifteen minutes. I will take that over two hours. Troy walked into the waiting room and introduced himself to us. I requested a light Ceaser with a line up for my son. He was very nice and professional. The haircut was about 20 to 30 minutes long. My son ran into waiting room excitedly with his a new haircut. His line-up was crisp and perfect. Troy got skillz (not skills) but skillzzzzzzzz. We were both happy campers. He also gave him a hi-five, too. I thanked Troy and told him we will be back in a month. Saw a sister with a fly frohawk waking down the street in LES a year ago when I needed a new barber. Finding a barber who cuts with a sense of women's agency -- taking time to consult us about our desires -- and who can add a feminine flair to the clipper style has been difficult given the patriarchal culture of most barbershops. I found and then lost a great barber and hair colorist just days before a major public talk. Decided to try AFG because their website looks professional and the celebs they've cut meant they had some credibility. I called Sabine's in BKLYN and they couldn't fit me in and it was going to be pricey. They referred be to some shady lady and I thought I'd better go pro not low. More established than anonymous. So a year later I came here and AFG did not disappoint. The receptionist is lovely. They got me in the day I called. They accommodated my every need. And Vince hooked me up with a beautiful cut with the best chair-side manner, touch and hair care incl product referrals. The spot seems not all that from street level but when you enter you realize this is a great salon experience with ambiance, beautiful artwork, and professional attire with individual flairs. All the barbers, male and female, were dressed in biz casual with a tie. And the owner is very engaging and charming. They offer you water. Have two waiting areas. Are very attentive. And the price point is well worth the trip. I was in and out in a reasonable time for Sat. The cost is a little more than an ordinary shop but far lower than any beauty salon for locks, extensions or perms, ladies. Plus the clientele who were there are handsome and friendly and the spot feels both upscale and yet real meaning communal. I'm picky and judgmental especially about a new place. I've been coming to AFG since December 2012, 3 years now and must say its changed my view of what a barber shop in Brooklyn can and should look and feel like. Not only do you get an experience not afforded to you at many other shops in the neighborhood but every one is friendly, courteous and respectful. For the first 2 and a half years Adrian, the shop owner, was my barber. He's modest but he's done a great job with my hair and not only just cutting it, also helping me grow it, texturize when it was necessary and style it. You can see the growth process in my various profile pictures. As of lately, Autumn has been taking care of me due to my schedule change but honestly all the barbers here are great. I've had my hair cut by each of them at least once. The shops is nicely decorated, clean and well kept. I do also enjoy the complimentary cocktails. To everyone who is about to change their lives with a big chop hair cut...rest assured this is the place to go for it. They are warm, welcoming and kind. I walked in there not knowing what to expect, very nervous to say the least. I was welcomed by a beautiful young lady who asked me what I was getting and who was scheduled to do it. I just recently moved to NYC and I was looking for a barber/stylist. I didn't just want the regular barber shop experience, I wanted someone who understands hair and knows how to style it. The shop is not easily visable from the street so make sure you look for the address number on the door and its on the third floor. I was promptly greeted upon walking in and everyone in the shop was extremely friendly and helpful. They offer you a complimentary beverage which ranges from water and juices, to a nice glass of wine. The interior of the shop has got to be one of the nicest I've ever seen. It's very well kept and decorated. They only take customers by appointment so you don't have to be bothered by having a ton of people in a crowded barbershop. Adrian is not just some local barber, he also cuts the hair of celebrities which he proudly hangs pictures of them on his walls (I would do the same thing). I knew the kind of haircut I wanted but I also knew that my hair wasn't the proper length in some areas from a previous hairstyle, so Adrian knew how to cut it to prep the hair to grow out properly to achieve the look I want. He walked me through everything he was doing step by step and explained the reasoning behind it. He is very knowledgable when it comes to hairstyles. All in all the haircut was $30 which is a little more than you run of mill barbershop...but if you're looking for a hairstylist that isn't just run of the mill then Adrian is your man. I would gladly pay a little bit more to have a nicer experience and walk out of the shop with a hairstyle that I'm extremely happy with, instead of saving a few bucks to have some barber mess up my hair.
