My dog Sharon came from this place. She is a white german shepherd and when she got home she pooped on my bed. Yikes. Had to put down

As I was looking for a new dog online, I came across a beautiful pup and started an online dialogue with this shelter. After going through an intensive online application and further communication with one of the people there, I agreed to come visit and was asked to bring my friend as he lives on my property and will be an influence in a new dog's life here. The nice lady I was talking with explained that although she will not be there on the Saturday I was to visit but assured me that the shelter manager would be happy to talk with me. It is over an hour away so I wanted to make the most of my visit. I also brought my two much older dogs with me in case there was an opportunity to let them meet each other. When we arrived we were met by two volunteers both pleasant young ladies and an occasional third young man. We met the puppy and even took her for a walk down the road. The place was empty of other visitors and the parking lot was empty. important. I get it that they care about their dogs and want to make sure that they find nice homes. but.. Apparently the shelter manager was too busy to speak with me even though she was the only one who could say anything that wasn't a part of their 'script' and it was she that I came to talk to and whom I had made the appointment to meet. They would not allow my dogs to meet the puppy and insisted that the next step 'had' to be an in home visit. Again... just repeating their script as they had no authority to do anything other than repeat the script. So we left with assurances that they would be in contact with me to arrange said visit. That was over 3 weeks ago and still not a word from any of them, not a call or even an email. I am an older gentleman who owns my own home with 3 acres of land alongside of a river with an additional 35 acres of land next to me for walks and I have owned dogs my entire life. I have no idea what their issue is but this is a pretty crappy way of dealing with someone who wants to provide a home for a dog from a shelter. read more

I adopted my baby from here many many years ago. This place is so amazing! I found her on pet finder, and didn't realize it was a 2 1/2 hour drive from where I was. I had already fallen in love by then! This rescue was so helpful answering ALL of my many questions, I wanted to be sure she would be a perfect fit before the long drive to meet her. The moment we met her with our other 2 dogs we knew it was perfect!! I am so thankful to them for rescuing her and caring for her for over 6 months. They loved her and couldn't have been more helpful in our adoption process. Our girl passed away, but she was just amazing! She gave us so many happy years! I wouldn't hesitate to drive the distance to adopt from this rescue again. Also they collect dog food donations for low income families in their area which is just awesome!!! They sell calendars, and do a charity Santa picture event. I wish I was closer! Personally I didn't think the adoption fee was enough, I'm sure it's changed now but if you are able to, donate in top of the adoption fee!! they do so much for these dogs and the community, and it's all volunteer. read more

Really worth the trip! We adopted our dog, a 10 month old shepherd pointer mix (we think?) from here almost 4 weeks ago after we found him on pet finder. It's a great facility, not overcrowded, friendly, and awesome. We were immediately helped, met our dog to be, got to take him on a walk by ourselves and play with him in one of the big yards that they have. We didn't feel any pressure to take him home, but when we did, he got a bath, and we got a free collar and a good leash for 8 bucks. The adoption fee was pretty low too. If a friend was looking for a dog or if I wanted to get another one, I would definitely consider going through Adopt-A-Pet again. read more

I can't tell you how appreciative and thankful we are for adopt a pet. They are a lovely group of volunteers that take amazing care of their pups. They handle adoptions to the letter of the law, crossing every T and dotting every I. But more than that, even a month after adoption when we need their advocacy and support, they stepped in to help us out. Our family had an excellent experience with Adopt-A-Pet in Shelton. We adopted Kota, a very sweet Husky-Shepard mix. The description on the website matched her perfectly. When I arrived to the facility, I was given a tour and had the opportunity to fill out an application for adoption. Di and Christine kept a very open communication about what was happening and where we were at in the adoption process. When Kota was ready to be picked up, we met her and since day one she has been the perfect dog for our family! I recommend Adopt-A-Pet of Shelton to all who ask me about Kota. I volunteered at this no kill shelter and would recommend adopting from this facility. The dogs are extremely well cared for on all levels. It would be difficult in my opinion to find one better. If one of my dogs got lost, heaven forbid, I would hope they would end up in this shelter. read more

We adopted a pair of dogs from Adopt A Pet in July 2015. The volunteer staff was polite and patient in introducing us to the dogs, who were very shy. We wanted to take the time to observe their behavior for a little while, to make sure there were no subtle aggressive tendencies, and the staff happily obliged. This group of people truly cares about the well being of the dogs, and about making sure the matches between dog(s) and family are mutually beneficial. We just adopted our first pet from this shelter, and they made it such a pleasant and easy experience for us! I was a little apprehensive to drive out from Seattle, but it was well worth the trip! I am so glad I made the drive from Mercer Island. They were so helpful and can really tell they care about all their four-legged friends. I went to look at a new litter of puppies and of course came home with the one I found on Petfinder. As soon as I saw her I knew! If I was closer, I would volunteer here. read more

ALERT: I'm writing to express my disappointment and disillusionment with a group I believed was doing wonderful work on behalf of dogs and their potential adopters. BACKGROUND: I lost my beloved 14 year old mini-poodle in February 2014, due to her cancer. Due to another illness in the family, I was told to wait a bit, but "Don't worry! We'll find you the perfect dog!" No problem. I understood. Three or so weeks ago, I called to find out that Adopt-A-Pet had a couple of small dogs which might be ideal for me and they were holding them to meet. I drove all the way over from East Olympia to Shelton and sat in a room with six people waiting for the first one to come in to meet me. I was told that "dogs pick their humans," and when the door opened, in came a dashing little Scruffy with a bolt, to jump up into my lap and began kissing me. I was ready to take him home when I noticed he wasn't doing well with his incision (his scrotum was black and he didn't want to stand up)--and so asked if he could be checked. We all drove down to the Vet to make sure he was okay, came back and he still seemed a bit "down" and lethargic, so "R" who was working with me, told me to keep him there and that they would re-check him on Monday or as soon as they could get him in. Sunday night they called to let me know that he was under observation for possible illnesses and I could not adopt him. I asked, "Am I still on the list?" "No," R said. She was vague about his status, but I said I'd call back to see how he was doing. I called two more times, worried about "my" new pet. Today I called and got ahold of K. "How is Scruffy?" I asked? "Oh," she said, "He's fine!" Oh? She then offered, that according to the card they had on file, another adopter had returned a pit puppy which had bitten one of its family members, so when they came back to return the puppy, they traded it with Scruffy. I can't express my utter disappointment and sadness with how they do business. I have promoted Adopt-A-Pet to everyone I've met--far and wide--to anyone who loves dogs. I feel like I was basically lied to and the dog with whom I had bonded was arbitrarily handed over to another for no good reason. Again, and it is with sadness on numerous levels, I can no longer recommend nor support this agency. K seemed genuinely sorry, but said, "I can't tell you more." So I say to you, How can I trust Adopt-A-Pet of Shelton Washington? read more
