I went to the Admiral Pub on Saturday for lunch. I haven't been there for a meal in years, but I recently moved back to West Seattle and since I used to work at the Admiral Pub (many, many years ago), I was looking forward to some good bar food in a place I used to love. Unfortunately, I was really disappointed by the experience.
They had a small poker tournament taking place in the back, but it was winding down when I got there. There were probably about 25 customers in the entire place, most of whom were in the back at the poker tables. There were two servers plus the cook/bartender - plenty of staff for the crowd.
The waitress who was working the dining room area didn't acknowledge us for several minutes. Finally, as she was walking towards the kitchen after taking another table's order, she asked us if we wanted menus. We said yes and she literally threw three menus down on our table (there were only two of us). I asked if I could have a coke as she was rushing off and she mumbled "yeah" over her shoulder. She didn't ask my friend if she wanted anything and a few minutes later she dropped off my coke and walked away before we could order a drink for my friend - let alone place our lunch order. Finally, the other server came up to us and took our order, which included an appetizer (cheese sticks) and two entrees (burger and fish & chips). Twenty minutes later, after no further visits from any servers, the cook brought out the fish & chips and burger. I said, "um, we had cheese sticks". He looked at me and said in an extremely patronizing tone, "well, I can only carry TWO things at once". Then he came back a minute later with the cheese sticks.
Ok several problems here:
1. The cheese sticks were an appetizer and as such, we expected them to come out first. Naturally, when our entrees were brought out first, it appeared to us as though our appetizers had been forgotten. Not a stupid question - no need for a sarcastic, rude response from the staff.
2. Even if my question WAS a stupid one and even if it was the busiest day in the history of that business (which I assure you it wasn't), I was a CUSTOMER. Good customer service sometimes means patiently answering stupid questions.
3. Although it's been a while since I waited tables and although I was not a career waitress, I certainly remember being able to carry more than two dishes at once. The Admiral Pub actually has these amazing implements called TRAYS that allow a server to carry multiple items AT THE SAME TIME. I actually saw one of the servers carrying one of these (not to our table, obviously, but I did see her with one), so I know they were available.
My roommate and I were dumbstruck by the cook's attitude and we were just totally disenchanted by the service the rest of the staff provided. The food was mediocre - typical bar food, nothing to write home about and there are definitely friendlier places to eat in the area.
We will definitely not be back and won't recommend the Admiral Pub to any of our friends either.
Sad - it used to be a great local pub. read more
