When we stopped to look at the menu the woman acting as hostess and server didn't use any English but convinced us to stop. FARTA BRUTOS, is a tiny place with a LOT of character that's been around for 113 years (as I mentioned above, our waitress spoke zero English so this was a little challenging at first). After our wine tasting I decided to have another taste of red from the Douro region (no, it doesn't really pair well with what I had, but I don't care). It's a crappy photo, but we had an appetizer plate (they're sneaky-they bring it to you THEN tell you if you don't want it they can take it away...we kept it). Olives (for Wifey) and a tuna mixture that didn't seem to have much more than olive oil and finely chopped onions - and it came with some Portuguese bread - I loved it. For our main meals, Wifey had a "fish rice" meal and I had a baked cod dish with potatoes and spinach that had enough garlic on it to keep the vampires away for the rest of the trip. We finished with a chocolate mouse that was nothing like anything I ever had. It was more like a thick frosting...so rich and chocolaty...so good... There are plenty of great places to eat here in Lisbon...the struggle isn't FINDING a place it's CHOOSING a place

Tinto - Quinta de Porrais, full bodied, 14%, €35. The couvert is bread and a yummy, sweetish tuna pâté. We shared 2 pratos: 1. Dourado de Português - whole fish in a tomato, pepper, onion sauce. Accompanied by potatoes. We picked that fish to death to get every last morsel. 2. Arroz de Pato - baked rice with duck meat pieces inside the cassoulet and sausage on top. Rich and crispy. The aroma was seductive. Dessert was an assortment of custard, orange and plum. Coffe and aguardente. + Excellent service from the owner. + Charming atmosphere. I'll admit it, the service was a bit uneven (one of the waiters didn't speak Portuguese or English) but the quality of the food more than makes up for it. We went there 3 times this past month. The first time we ordered the grilled chouriço (chouriço assado) as an appetizer followed by the steak and fries which, in Lisbon, is always served with a fried egg on top and super creamy and well prepared prawn lime risotto. We only ordered the baked cod (bacalhau à braz) and garlic shrimp the second time around. I've never had a more delicious garlic sauce than what was on that shrimp! Finally, on our last day in my hometown, we ordered the steak and fries and the octopus rice. The latter is served in a clay pot and I swear it's one of the most amazing seafood dishes I've ever had. The octopus was tender and delicious. According to Portuguese culinary tradition, they have a small menu because they know they can make these dishes well. The prices are competitive, the ambiance is quaint. The word "solar" roughly translates to manor. Go there, get the food, tip well.

Cana Verde is situated in what used to be the sailor and fisherman market district and while many of us (locals and tourists alike) opted to have a sit down lunch, there were many workers who popped in for a bite or coffee quickly at the counter. Very legit. Since sardines are what Portugal is all about, I ventured a try and ordered the Sardinhas Assadas (grilled sardines). These were served whole, brilliantly seasoned with potatoes, salad, oil & vinegar and fresh bread. These were big' ol sardines, about 6-8 inches long. They were piping hot. Since they were cooked and served whole, all manner of fish guts spilled out and I just tried really hard to think that I was getting my Omega 3's while scooping up the fish bits. The richness/oiliness/flavor of the dish was quite intense, and I really had to try to make it through three of the four sardines. Luckily, the half-bottle of vinho verde I ordered made it easier to wash down the fishes. I chose this restaurant because when I passed by I could see chickens roasting in one window, and a group dining robustly with mountains of plates of fishbones. I knew I would regret it if I didn't go in. Glad I did, glad I tried the sardines, but to be 100% honest, I wish I tried the chicken..the other house specialty. Will never forget this experience!

The room is bright, lively, and full of energy, with an open kitchen and wood fired oven that immediately sets the tone. The pizza is exactly what you hope for. Every bite tastes intentional and well executed, the kind of pizza that does not need anything extra to impress. The pasta is just as strong. Rich, comforting, and full of flavor, it feels like something you would be served at a neighborhood spot in Italy rather than an Italian restaurant abroad. Nothing feels overdone or adapted for tourists. It tastes authentic and confident. The atmosphere adds to the experience. It is busy without feeling chaotic, polished without feeling formal. You can tell people come here to eat well and enjoy themselves, not to rush through a meal. Forno D'Oro delivers exactly what it promises. Exceptional Italian food, a warm and energetic space, and a dining experience that genuinely makes you feel transported. Everything else about the visit was extremely pleasant though. There was a bit of a wait for our table even though we had a reservation, but the folks ahead of us who were at our table were having such a good time that I didn't even mind waiting for them to finish up their drinks. Our server was attentive the entire time which was very much appreciated. There's a cool ambiance about this restaurant -- everyone here (except me!) were dressed very trendy. We started off with a round of caipirinhas which were well made and strong. For pizzas, we went with the caprese and margherita pizzas which were a nice balance. The caprese was topped with fresh arugula and cherry tomatoes which were refreshing. The margherita was everything you'd expect it to be. If you're craving pizza in Lisbon, give this place a try!
