Such an unfortunate experience. This restaurant has the potential to be great and yet; it was very disappointing. The dining room is too dark! The lighting needs to be adjusted. The room is also too noisy. The wait staff were inattentive. A simple request like an extra plate to put clam shells went undone. So, we piled clam shells on the tablecloth. The portions were small. The prices were high. I don't mind paying premium for good food and service but this restaurant fell quite short of expectations. the worst was that we were charged for dessert which we did not order! Be mindful! I've only eaten here once and although the food is expensive, it's really good. It was a business dinner celebrating the holidays. For about 12 people we ordered several dishes to share. The portions are ginormous, so that's definitely the way to go. We ordered the Paelha Valenciana, which included a variety of seafood and Portuguese chouriço sausage and cubes of pork - delicious! A colleague and I shared the Filet Mignon Americano that came with jumbo shrimp, roasted potatoes, and broccoli rabe. The steak was cooked well to our request. There were a few other dishes on the table that I cannot remember. This restaurant is beautiful inside. it's a lot bigger than it looks on the outside. A long narrow seating area leads to a bigger and beautiful room in the back. There is also a bar AND a lounge. The bar area is kind of uncomfortable, it's a very narrow space, but still gets pretty packed. I haven't been here for the lounge and dancing yet, but it's always poppin' and packed with beautiful people! There is also seating outside in front of the restaurant - about 8 to 10 tables and chairs. I come in the summer nights to share a pitcher or two of sangria - $13 for a half pitcher and double the price for full. They have red and blue sangria. Wine list is super extensive with lots of Portuguese, Spanish, and French wines. Their caipirinhas are nothing less than refreshing and strong! I've always had wonderful service. Everyone in this town is a sight for freakin' sore eyes. I'll come here again...and again. UPDATE: I came here last weekend with a visiting girlfriend. It was her first time in the Ironbound. She couldn't believe the amount of beautiful faces. It's old news to me, HA! The lambchops and stuffed salmon with lobster, crab, and spinach were delectable. As for a nice big red cherry on top, at the end of dinner our server (for no reason, besides we're fabulous :P) offered to do a shot with us on the house, our choice. Lovely dinner with my husband, daughter and her boyfriend. My husband had lunch here previously and suggested it for dinner. We were not disappointed. We started off with cocktails ... My gin martini was too watery and did not come with my side of dirty ice. My husband's bourbon Manhattan was enjoyable but he also did not get his shaken ice on the side. I don't know why servers don't write orders down because they never seem to get it right when they try to memorize it. We ordered red sangria, which is very good and apps of shrimp in a garlic sauce and chorizo cooked table side. Both were excellent. The kids had paella, I had a special of red snapper with lobster ravioli and my husband had porterhouse steak with a prawn on top. We shared a dessert and specialty coffees, which all were delicious. Five of us went here for lunch. In comparison to other Brazilian/Portuguese/Spanish restaurants in the Ironbound, this place stands out above its competition. My co-worker in charge of organizing this annual luncheon for years had been sending us to Iberia down the street. I'm glad I convinced him to break tradition and go here instead. The food and service were excellent and the ambiance is much nicer and more modern than other spots in the Ironbound. My one co-worker and I got the mixed meat platter (churrasco) which was incredibly flavorful, filling and had a great variety of meat. Pork chop. Lamb chop. Sirloin. Sausage. Bacon. And all cooked to a perfect temperature. Everyone else was happy with their meals, notably the garlic chicken, and the garlic bread and olive and diced tomato accompaniments were a nice touch. The sangria was also delicious and packed quite the punch. For $175 for 5 people, we all left very content. My only critique would be that my rice and beans could have used a little more salt. After lunch, we stopped at the bar, which was packed with men at 3:00 on a Tuesday, which I'm sure has nothing to do with the attractiveness of the bartenders. read more

I always have a good time here. The service is amazing and the food is impeccable. I had a late night dinner here and they were accommodating and and those close to their closing time. My boyfriend and I visited this restaurant to eat dinner and to try out their sangria. The waitress was very nice, the food was very good, the sangria was delicious BUT one of the owners profiled us because my boyfriend is black, I am an Afro Latina woman and we both look very young. We are young black working professionals in our 30s who were treated as we couldn't be trusted to pay a restaurant bill. Unfortunately, we won't be supporting this business. When we arrived, we were immediately seated outdoors. It was a very cool vibe and we were excited to try out Portuguese food for the first time. After we were seated, one of the owners (a guy with a pink button down shirt) approached us to give us a menu. I asked for a pitcher of Sangria and right away he asked my boyfriend for an ID and credit card. I noticed that he didn't asked other clients for their ID and credit card before serving them. Once my boyfriend gave the owner his AMX card, the owner became more attentive. When we asked for the check, the waitress had no clue that the owner took my boyfriend's card and ID (this solidified that asking clients for a credit card before serving is NOT their practice). My boyfriend recently purchased a property in Newark so we have been exploring the city by trying out restaurants. Went on a Sunday night and was impressed with the portions served. The food was tasty and overall was fairly inexpensive. I had a rotisserie meat platter and shared it plus had leftovers. It was accompanied with a salad and a small portion of rice. We did not have dessert. Our waiter was horrible. He was an older gentleman, hard of hearing, that came once, got our order and never saw him again. He was pretty rude too. We ended up having unused and dirty dishes in the table till the end. Fan-tab-u-Lou's; that's how I would describe my meal here at Adega Grill. The Sangria was by far the best I've ever had. I loved every aspect of my meal, the shrimp, scallops, red snapper. Asparagus, carrots were all cooked to perfection; the mash potatoes were cooked with shaved carrots which was different, yet delightful. The only flaw was the over-cooked broccoli & room temperature bread. My wife and I were so psyched to try this place out. It's in such a vibrant, diverse area that hosts one of NJ's best ethnic food scenes. Adega was recommended to me by a friend who loves the place, so we decided to do a date night. Ambiance was ok, but I'm gonna stick to the food. Apps: Spanish chorizo was tasty, but served lukewarm. My clams casino were pretty horrendous. The bacon on top included a fatty portion that had not been rendered down to that crispy, melt away bliss that is pure fat, and the clams themselves were gritty. I hoped it may have just been one or two of them, but by the fourth sand-infused clam I gave up. I told my waiter this and he did not offer an apology or explanation. Not good. Entrees: My Paella Valencia was solid, but could have been cooked down more. It still had alot of liquid at the bottom of the pan, and it lacked that distinctive "crispness" that the outside develops when cooked properly, but the abundance of flavor and seafood made up for it. Ironically, it was served ridiculously hot, and the portion was so huge they had to pack my leftovers in a roasting pan! My wife's skirt steak was good, not great, and the "crispy potatoes" they served with it were anything but. More like limp, soggy, homemade potato chips. Service was good, although after reading some of the reviews on here I can see it is hit or miss. In a town full of places with Spanish and Portugese food, I can say I will definitely be looking to try other places before coming back to Adega Grill. read more

I would give them 5 stars since their food was amazing, and the service was good but I cannot in good conscience do it. I went to eat here a few weeks ago with my husband and my 2 children. Obviously with everything that is happening it is outdoor dining. We were quickly seated and as I was going over the menu I quickly started smelling cigarette smoking. I lifted my head to see where the smell was coming from and it was coming from 2 tables over where these gentleman were enjoying themselves and smoking up a storm. I quickly asked our server if I could please speak to the manager because I assumed since smoking indoors at a restaurant is illegal it surely was also outdoors. I also want to add that both my children are severely asthmatic and cigarette smoke bothers them. The manager came out and I asked him if it was allowed and he told me that yes there was nothing he could do about it except move us to another table but that we would have to wait a little because there was still customers at said table but they were finishing up. The manager lied to me!! I didn't know it at the time, but found out later that It is illegal in the state of New Jersey to smoke in an outdoor dining atmosphere!! How can you run a restaurant and not know this??? They can even get a fine for allowing smoking! We spent $300 on our meal and I gladly would come back again and spend another $300, I rather invest in local restaurants then big chain ones but I cannot bring myself to do it again. I showed up here for a private party in the back room (oh baby!) and had a great time. The front area looks like your standard bar or restaurant. The back room however has this 70sish plastic paneling on the floor. The kind of thing Austin Powers would like. The room also had plenty rectangular couches and small tables. All in all a good spot. From the first day and booking this location, we were met with superb professionalism by this establishment. The day of the event we were taken to the private room to set up. We had one waiter who we could order food from and then there was this other guy who was like the "water and food server" so when we wanted to order he told us that he wasn't our waiter and we had to get the other guy. That was confusing...For a Friday night that wasn't busy it sure took a LONG time to get our food. I'm a fan too. We ended up arriving to this location around 8:30pm on a Saturday evening. We walked in and there was no hostess, but four people came up to us to ensure we were being assisted. We only wait about 15mins for a seat outside (that's what we wanted). We just ordered a drink from the bar and them headed out to the upper level of the outside seating. It was a beautiful night. It was a night everyone wanted to be out, dressed up, laugh, and overall have a great time. I was with my friend, we ordered the T-bone steak, veggies, shrimp and crab mixture (19.99), which was HUGE and largely portioned. We also ordered the white sangria (they have blue, green, red, and white options), which was perfect for the evening (28 bucks for a pitcher). We got about 4 glasses each from the pitcher, which is well worth it, especially if you think you want a few drinks. Example: its about $10 a drink, you want 2, that's $20. It makes sense to get the pitcher if its you and a friend. It was actually flavorful, it wasn't really strong, which I rather have a strong drink, but it was nice for the evening to just chill and enjoy in the humidity. The service: Our waitress was alert, informative and she got our food out to us hot. She checked on us several times and was great at her job. I can't say ALL the people are out there, but she was one good person to have in the front.I really liked the manager helping on the floor, he was Portuguese, but spoke really good Spanish. I believe he was a PERFECT person for the job. Everyone was eating, drinking, laughing and hanging out. Great night. I was impressed. We then decided to head over to the night club. I booked a business lunch at Adega Grill. It was a disaster, an embarrassment for me and for Newark, as the lunch companions were from out-of-town. The lone waiter for the entire restaurant was an incompetent amateur. He took two of five orders and then disappeared for ten minutes. I went looking for him and corralled him back to the table. He then took all the orders. Three of five arrived. Ten minutes later, I got up to find him again, as all guests nervously ate and wondered who should eat. When he eventually showed up with the last two meals, he spilled one on the table, from a height, in front of the out- of- town guest of honor. I didn't comment that he also got the order wrong. 5/8/16 marked my very first Mother's Day and accordingly, I was allowed to choose the venue for our family dinner (thus usurping my mother's annual privilege). Having dined at Adega Grill in October 2015 for a friend's going away party, I knew exactly where the family and I would be going. Without hesitation, I hit the Open Table website and made reservations for 5pm, party of 4 + high chair). Venue called me to confirm our reservation the day before. On the day of, we were running a few minutes late and venue called to check on us. Luckily we were steps from the front door so no issues there. Dad was still parking the car, but Hostess did NOT make us wait until our complete party was standing there (I hate when restaurants do that). Though the place was packed, we were escorted to our table within 3 minutes of arriving. So yeah....a reservation actually MEANS something. Though extremely busy, service was attentive and quick. We ordered from a special "Mother's Day" menu; robust with options and not at all lacking from the regular menu. They were out of the suckling pig and goat dishes (sister's choices), so she chose paella valencia, as did our parents. I ordered the ribeye and stuffed lobster, which came with spanish potatoes, grilled veggies and rice. For appetizers, we ordered stuffed clams and stuffed mushrooms. I'm going to cut to the chase and just say everything was finger-licking delicious. EVERYTHING. Including the sangria, which is some the BEST I've ever tasted. My only "criticism" is that the place gets loud. REALLY loud. Especially in the back room. So if you're on a (romantic) date and want to hear the sweet nothings he/she is whispering in your ear, sit up front. The cute little banquettes are much more suited for couples anyway. Warm and inviting, and can be both romantic and festive depending on which room you are in. The food...delicious, perfectly seasoned, beautifully prepared, unique in flavors. We started with the cheese appetizers platter with fig and meats along with salmon with cheese on toast with capers. My husband had the skirt steak (recommended by brother in law Frank, a regular at the resteraunt) and it was spectacular or as my husband quoted "perfect" while I went for the Camarao Jumbo Em Molho picante, a spicy shrimp dish that was perfectly seasoned. A friend joining us had fillet minion flamed in brandy...also cooked perfectly presented in blazing fashion. The meal was paired with a delicious pinot noir from their selection of fine wines. Here on biz and found this place on Yelp. Ordered the Skirt Steak and Garlic Shrimp. From the first bite it was "melt in my mouth" delicious! Veggies - both steamed and roasted - were awesome! The Portuguese Kale soup (which I grew up on because I'm half Portuguese) was just perfect! "Upscale" enough for modern taste but traditional enough to make me nostalgic.
