I've been dying to get into Legacy Records, but was more interested in the cocktail bar upstairs, and glad I made this a stop.
First off, it is definitely off the beaten path, almost right outside the Lincoln Tunnel begins port authority. As the neighborhood grows, this is going to be fantastic, but, there's definitely not a lot here. However, the building is beautiful and the spinning record outside indicates that you have indeed, found it.
I made a reservation for two on a Tuesday night around 9:30. I've made the decision all my drinking will be done on Tuesday nights, because it's not crowded anywhere. The bar was quite filled, and there are several tables in the back as well as a private room an event was going on.
I was a little nervous because I was coming from work, and unfortunately that means I'm not dressed up. They didn't mind at all, the homestead was lovely, pleasant, and sat me early, even though my friend was a bit late. I would bet on a busier night that may not fly. The back area is cozy, with banquettes and small tables, providing an intimate setting for sharing drinks and snacks with friends. I love the sort of speakeasy Art Deco vibe going on here.
The cocktail list is amazing, and they carry an impressive array of wine and spirits. Their cocktail list was curated by PDT mixologist, so you know it's going to be good.
Craft cocktails are my thing, and I went a little rouge and ordered off the menu, because I love seeing what different bartenders create. My friend ordered the matcha picchu, and it came with a Machta alpaca design in the egg white. I'm not a mezcal fan, but this drink was well made, as was mine, a gin based trial concoction they called the white lady.
Our server, Brian was outstanding. He provided insight to the menu, was happy to guide us through choices with helpful reviews and what we might like based on our tastes. He was funny, attentive, and definitely added to the visit.
Another interesting fact is all their drinks have gratuity added. There is no tipping, which I thought was fabulous. Sure, the drinks are $18 (and for good reason. Have you ever watched a bartender create a craft cocktail? It's time consuming. It's art. You aren't paying for a vodka soda here, folks) but to just pay your bill and walk out was lovely.
All in all, the vibe here is LOVELY and I would definitely recommend this place. And be sure to ask for Brian when you go. He's a gem. read more
