Of all the roofing companies that came out to look, only Mike Haynes of Bay Roofing said "Yeah, your roof is old and you're overdue for replacement, but your roof IS NOT falling apart. Just trim those trees and the animals won't be able to climb up and try to dig into your attic!" Talk about an honest straight-shooter! Well, I did have another company come out and replace some shingles...I bought the shingles and the guy even taught me how to replace them. Then I patched and puttied for several more winters until I got fed up with it and ready to re-roof. My experience with Mike never left my mind. I got a quote from another local roofing company for around $11k. Mike had already been referred to me by a friend/associate and that confident referral, Mike's VERY competitive price (read: a lot less expensive) and my previous experience with him sealed the deal. As busy as all roofers are, I knew that Mike and his guys wouldn't be able to do the job for 4-6 weeks. I tell Mike I'm ready to schedule with him. No sooner than a couple days later I get a call, "I got a cancellation, we can do your roof next week." Three days and they're done. Day one: Tear off the old roof. And it was a short day. Day two: install the sheathing. Day three: Shingle the roof. I know Mike can do this work in his sleep, but I'm pretty sure he didn't. ;-) I'll say one thing though, they do their work like a choreographed dance. Really elegant. That included plywood and other wood repairs, which did increase the bill -- just something to be aware of. Day 2 - Permits: Permit process through the city was honestly laughable. I have cameras at my house -- the guy showed up for maybe one minute, signed off, and left. That was a $700 charge. Gotta love the City of Hayward. Just a heads-up: make sure you pay the permit fees promptly, because the city will stay on you about it. Day 3 - Roofing: The crew crushed it. Full re-roof, new flashing, new vents -- solid work. Day 4 - Final walkthrough: The project manager came by to inspect everything, paint the flashing, and address any concerns I had. If you bring something up, they really do try their best to make it right, which I appreciated. Extras & advice: They installed all new gutters and downspouts. One recommendation: do NOT pay for gutter guards. Go to Home Depot and do it yourself -- it'll save you $700+ and it's very easy. Make sure you read your contract carefully. They will do everything that's written down -- but they will not do anything extra beyond that. Totally fair, just a learning experience for me. I'm a DIY person, so after demo on Day 1 I went up on the roof myself and painted and resealed all the old and new wood. In my opinion, this is 100% a must-do. This is NOT their job and not part of the quote, so don't expect them to do it -- but I highly recommend taking care of it yourself. The crew was respectful and hardworking. I made sure to bring them drinks and stayed out of their way as much as possible. They mostly spoke Spanish and were very nice. Lara did a solid job overall, and I'm happy with the quality of the roof. I tried my best not to be in their way, but I was around asking questions and checking on progress. I respect their labor, and because of that, I wanted to leave them a good and honest review.
