No returns without the tags. I shopped here before. But now I have to say no more. I was very sad because they do have very high quality clothing except the selection is not as extensive in the past like work boots. I just wanted to return a shirt that the manufacturer had the same size as the shirt on my back, but it was two full sizes bigger when I brought it home and and tried it on. When looking for some spark resistant clothing to wear while using an angle grinder, I wasn't quite sure where to shop. A friend suggested that stores with "workwear" in the name should fit the bill and sure enough there's one in SF. From the outside it looks like any other Mission st storefront... but inside it's actually a pretty large store, with tons of sizes and options. And changing rooms. So you can try on the dozen sizes and brands you might need to check to find what works for you... have fun trying to do that online. Turns out what worked for me was Carhartt, which makes heavy cotton work clothes with some stretch to them. They have a huge selection on the right side when you walk in. And the staff member I spoke with was super helpful in pointing out where I could find the options and sizes I needed. They had basically every size and fit under the sun for work pants, but less inventory for Carhartt work shirts. They also have tons of boots, as well as some "work" clothing that is really more for fashion than work. Anyway, if I need more gear, I'll be back. read more

Somewhat limited selection but excellent service. I love shops along Haight Street because of the funkiness and all the vintage shops. I really wish they would consider taking the bars off of their windows because it makes for a really uninviting atmosphere. I only walked in here because I was looking for a Carhartt jacket for my nephew. But aside from that, walking along this street for over 18 years and this was the first time I walked in only because I had to. I've been to many shops where I didn't "need" to go in but I did anyway because it was inviting and showed their wares in the windows. Something about walking into a store with the windows painted over and bars on them to make me think that I'm in the wrong place. The guys here were awesome! Tried on redbacks and Blue Tongues- slip on steel toe work boots. Not only do they have the most selection but also the best local prices I've seen. It feels good to support local business and I believe some of the guys here are veterans. Even more of a plus for them. One of the guys helped me try on 10 different boots and not once did he show frustration. I ended up purchasing the Blue tongues because they were comfortable in on sale. The men working at this store are terrible people. Today my girlfriend went to Acme Surplus to return some clothing for a friend and was immediately met with serious aggression. I should emphasize now that the returns were made well within the realms of their "return policy". I'll keep this very simple. My girlfriend is polite, cheerful and overall a very respectful person. While attempting to make the returns she was kept in the store for over 30min while repeatedly being called a liar and a dumb bitch. Are you kidding me? How can you treat people that way? Regardless of how much you dislike doing returns, you DO NOT call anyone names or curse at them. Seriously? Is your business failing so miserably that you're taking it out on an innocent customer making returns? You have a return policy!! There are plenty of good places to buy work clothes in this city. I've been to every army navy surplus store in the city and this is by far the best. best selection, best employees. they have an excellent selection of sweatshirts, jackets, coats, and socks. i know, i know. you're probably thinking why the hell would he mention socks. but come on. are you seriously going to say you don't take some time to consider your feet when it comes to purchasing socks? they have thick, sturdy soft socks that come in 6 packs for a good price. none of that old navy crap that gets holes the third time you wear em. This is the type of establishment that you all need to patronize because it is a dying breed. Small independent (probably long-time family run business) that carries great items at a great price. If you want Walmart, this aint it. It's better. Really. The saying, don't judge a book by its cover, is appropriate here. While the storefront or area may make you hesitate a little go right in and not only will you get great service I would be shocked if you do not leave with a bag full of goodies. I went in searching for some camo pants for an airsoft game that was coming up. About $20 for one color BDUs. About $28 for the ACU pants I bought. I looked around the clothes in the store, just because I was curious about the quality and the pricing of the clothing. But even though not I am one of those construction, security, or jobs that require quality warm clothing, I would still probably get some of their clothing someday! read more

I used to come in when I was a teenager to get the basics: hoodies, t-shirts and yes, I used to sport those baggy Dickies and Ben Davis pants. I paid Acme Surplus a visit a few weeks ago in hopes to find some camping gear. I was in luck! Aside from having an impressive selection of work wear. I found a pretty decent selection of camping goods at prices that were comparable to big-name sporting goods stores. SCORE! It brings a satisfying smile to my face when mom & pop shops like this one don't have to jack up prices to survive. I bought a backpacking mess kit for two and only had to kick down $9.
